Walkthrough

Agent responses can now carry parsed file proposals through Nova’s turn stream. Nova can apply proposals to a linked local workspace or show them in the thread and workspace panel. The changes also add code and file cards and a responsive, resizable Nova sidebar.

Changes

Agent File Proposals

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse and emit file proposals
apps/web/modules/nova/agent-files/parse-proposals.ts, apps/web/modules/nova/agent-files/parse-proposals.test.ts, apps/web/modules/nova/sessions/turn.ts, apps/web/modules/nova-web/api.ts
The turn flow parses file fences, remaps proposal paths against indexed files, emits proposal events, and stores proposals in response trailers. Tests cover fence parsing and path resolution.
Write proposals to the local workspace
apps/web/modules/nova-web/local-workspace.ts, apps/web/modules/nova-web/apply-proposals.ts
The local workspace adds write-permission checks and file creation. Proposal application normalizes paths, writes files sequentially, and returns per-file outcomes. Trailer helpers recover proposals from stored responses.
Track proposal state and expose apply controls
apps/web/modules/nova-web/nova-app.tsx, apps/web/modules/nova-web/components/thread.tsx, apps/web/modules/nova-web/components/timeline.tsx
NovaApp merges proposals from stream events and stored response bodies, attempts non-interactive application in agent mode, and passes proposal state and an apply callback to ThreadView. The thread displays proposal status, and Markdown rendering removes proposal trailers.
Show proposals in the workspace panel
apps/web/modules/nova-web/components/workspace-panel.tsx
The panel includes proposal paths in touched files, prefers proposal content when loading matching files, and opens up to eight proposal tabs. Local read errors include guidance for proposed files.

Nova Sidebar Components

Layer / File(s) Summary
Render code and file cards
apps/web/components/nova/code-block.tsx, apps/web/components/nova/file-card.tsx
CodeBlock displays code with optional language, wrapping, height, and copy controls. FileCard displays file path details, status, and expandable code when content is provided.
Build responsive, resizable sidebar
apps/web/hooks/use-media-query.ts, apps/web/hooks/use-sidebar-resize.ts, apps/web/components/nova/nova-sidebar.tsx
The hooks track media-query matches and manage bounded, persistent sidebar resizing. NovaSidebar renders a desktop panel or mobile drawer with a file list.

Applying agent changes could overwrite the wrong local file. After a reload, it could write a truncated file. In a different thread, it could apply the previous thread's changes. Fix these local-write risks before merging.

Replace and clean up the copy-feedback timer.

If the user copies twice within 1.6 seconds, the first timeout clears the second copy’s “Copied” feedback early. Cancel the previous timeout before scheduling another. Cancel the remaining timeout on unmount. Based on learnings: React timers need cleanup when the component releases them.

Render the expandable body for empty files.

When content is "", the button is enabled and toggles open, but this condition never renders the body. Use the same content != null check as expandable so an empty file can be expanded.

Do not show an inoperative close control.

When onOpenChange is omitted, handleClose does nothing, but SidebarHeader still shows a close button. Either manage open internally for this case or omit the close control when the sidebar cannot be closed.

Manage keyboard focus for the mobile drawer.

When the drawer opens, focus stays behind the overlay, and keyboard users can continue tabbing through the covered page. When it closes, its off-screen controls remain focusable despite aria-hidden. Give the open drawer dialog semantics, move and contain focus while it is open, support Escape, restore focus on close, and make the closed drawer inert.

Remove drag listeners when the hook unmounts.

If navigation unmounts the sidebar during a drag, handleUp might not run. The window listeners then retain the drag callbacks and can continue handling pointer moves. Keep the active listener cleanup in a ref and invoke it from an unmount effect. Based on learnings: React hooks must remove listeners that they register.

Validate path segments before writing.

writeLocalWorkspaceFile passes every path segment to getDirectoryHandle and getFileHandle without checks. The browser API throws an error on .., so a traversal outside the folder is not possible. However, the function still accepts segments such as .git and node_modules, which the indexer skips on purpose. Reject the segments ., .., .git, and any other segments that must stay protected. This gives defense in depth for paths that come from the model.

Based on learnings: "validate/sanitize the path before joining it with a base/root directory."

Reset proposals when the session changes.

fileProposals and applyStatus are set and merged, but no code clears them on navigation or at the start of a new turn. Proposals from thread A therefore stay in thread B. There, "Make these changes" writes thread A's files. Clear both values in the selectedId effect. Also clear them at the start of runTurn, unless proposals should accumulate across turns on purpose.

Do not use fuzzy path remapping for file writes. The server remap and the client remap both match paths by basename or by heuristics. As a result, a new file proposed by the model can be redirected to an unrelated existing file. Agent mode then overwrites that file without user interaction.

Do not store truncated content as an applyable proposal.

Proposals with more than 200,000 characters are cut off in the trailer. recoverProposalsFromBody returns that cut-off content with no marker. Clicking "Make these changes" after a reload or a missed stream event then writes a truncated file to disk. To fix this, leave oversize proposals out of the trailer, or add a truncated flag and skip flagged proposals when applying.

P1 New paths overwrite existing files

resolveProposalPath can replace a valid new path with an existing file. With only lib/utils.ts indexed, a proposal for src/utils.ts becomes lib/utils.ts and overwrites it. The client repeats this guessing in normalizeWritePath; it also turns docs/intro.md into root-level intro.md when docs is new.

Preserve explicit project-relative paths in both places, or ask before changing the target.

P1 Old proposals overwrite newer work

fileProposals only accumulates entries, and neither a new turn nor a project change clears it. After applying one batch, editing one of those files locally, and requesting changes to another file, the button writes both the new proposal and the stale earlier body. Switching projects also leaves the old batch available.

Scope proposals and their status to the current project and batch, and remove successfully applied entries.

P1 Folder switches redirect pending writes

writeLocalWorkspaceFile reads the shared memoryHandle for each file rather than keeping the folder chosen when the batch started. During manual apply, ProjectPicker remains enabled because it only checks loading || streaming. Selecting another saved folder can therefore redirect the remaining writes into that folder.

Keep one folder handle for the whole batch and prevent or reject a project switch until it finishes.

P1 Large replacements lose content

The trailer silently cuts file bodies at 200,000 characters. For a proposal above that limit, the server first sends the complete file_proposals event, then sends the response activity with the shortened trailer. The response handler merges that shortened copy over the complete proposal. Clicking apply then replaces the file with incomplete text.

Store complete bodies separately or mark oversized proposals unavailable; never offer a shortened body as a full-file replacement.

P1 Reload removes saved proposals

Proposal recovery only runs inside the live stream handler. loadSession and pullSync load saved response activities without recovering their trailers. Reloading before applying therefore leaves fileProposals empty and removes the apply button, despite the proposals being saved.

Recover the active session's proposals when loading and syncing its activities too.

P2 Preview shows another file

loadFileBody tries exact and suffix matches in the same .find. If index.ts precedes src/index.ts in the proposals, opening src/index.ts from the file browser returns the root file's content first. Both paths survive server remapping when both are indexed.

Look for an exact match before trying a unique suffix match.

P2 Old reads replace new previews

A local read started before proposals arrive can overwrite the new proposal preview after this effect runs. loadFileBody awaits the disk read and then updates fileBodies without checking whether a newer proposal has replaced it. Ignore stale reads or recheck the current proposal before saving their result.

P2 Cancel retries folder selection

The read-only fallback catches cancellation as well as unsupported write access. When the user cancels the first folder picker, this code calls the picker again instead of reaching the existing AbortError return. Let cancellation return null; only retry errors that actually justify a read-only fallback.

})

P2 New files stay hidden

The successful-apply refresh leaves localProject.paths unchanged and computes fileCount from the same old values. Although the writer adds new paths to its in-memory index, FilesPane reads localProject.paths, so newly created files remain absent from the browser and count. Refresh those fields from the successful writes or the updated workspace.

P2 New sidebar never appears

The new NovaSidebar has no callers, so its FileCard, CodeBlock, resize handle, and mobile drawer never appear. NovaApp still imports the existing navigation sidebar, while ThreadView renders the fixed-width WorkspacePanel only on large screens. Wire the new file sidebar into the thread so users can reach the added controls.
