Integer()/Float() in C#, JIT for optional positionals before keywords, Fixnum rounding, Range#first/last, Float#step - #115
A method like def m(a, b = 2, k: 3) was lowered to a single splat, def m(*?args?), plus a prologue that took the splat apart. The method JIT does not compile a method with a splat, so every call ran the generic body.

145 ns
18 ns
f(1, 2)
153 ns
33 ns
f(1, 2, exception: 1)

119 ns
For comparison, def f(a, k: 1) without optionals costs ~20 ns.
Lowering.PrismAstBridge now keeps the optionals as optional parameters and lowers the keywords after them. That is what it already did after mandatory parameters (Parameters.KeywordsAfterOptionals).
A keyword call that leaves an optional out passes its keyword hash in that optional's place.
The body moves the hash to the keyword parameter before any default runs (Parameters.TransformOptionalsInitialization).
JIT. The method JIT now takes these methods when the optional defaults are literals (JitKeywords.OptionalPositionals).
The entry and the profiler move the keyword hash the same way the body does (JitKeywords.ShiftKeywords).
The separation check now looks at the last mandatory parameter.
These methods get no direct keyword entry, so keyword calls stay at ~119 ns (see "Still open").
Arity errors. For any method with keywords, the arity error is now worded from the declared signature (RubyOps.MakeKeywordMethodArityError), as MRI words it:
the hidden keyword parameter and the keyword hash are not counted;
required keywords are named.
Example: for def f(a, k: 1), a call f used to say "expected 1..2" and now says "expected 1". A call with too many arguments now reads given 4, expected 1..3; required keyword: j.
Method#parameters now lists required keywords before optional ones, as MRI does.
Kernel#Integer and #Float. These are now C# entry points (KernelOps.ToInteger, ToFloat).
C# handles an Integer, a finite Float, a String with or without a radix, and the exception: keyword on its own.
Everything else goes to the prelude, which keeps the earlier Ruby code: __ir_Integer_slow__ and __ir_Float_slow__ hold the coercion protocol and the errors.
Without the prelude, the C# library's own conversion protocol is used, as before.
Changes that now match MRI:
A radix given as nil is a TypeError.
A radix that is not a number raises even with exception: false.
Calls with too many arguments get MRI's message.
Integer#round, #floor, #ceil and #truncate. For a Fixnum with a negative ndigits, these now use long arithmetic instead of BigInteger. 300 combinations of value, ndigits and half: mode give the same results as CRuby.
Range#first and #last.
Without a count, they are now C#.
With a count, they go to the prelude (__first_n__, __last_n__).
(..5).last(2) now returns [4, 5], as in MRI. Before, it raised. Range_IntegerFastPaths1 is updated to match.
ArithmeticSequence#inspect. The text is now built only when someone asks for it. Before, every Range#%, Range#step and Numeric#step call built it.
The Float loop of #step. It is now C# (KernelOps.FloatStep). The JIT does not take a method that yields, so the Ruby loop was slow. break and return from the block work as before.
Testing
IronRuby.Tests passes with no failures. Two new tests take their expected output from CRuby:
Kernel_ConversionsRoundingStep1
Method_OptionalAndKeywordParameters1. Its last part runs the methods often enough that the JIT specializes them, then checks every case again.
Improved calls to methods that combine optional positional and keyword parameters. Defaults, required keywords, argument-count errors, and calls through reflection, super, send, Method, and Proc now behave more consistently.
Corrected Range#first and Range#last behavior for count arguments, including beginless and endless ranges.
Improved Integer and Float conversions, including handling of invalid values and conversion errors. Integer rounding at negative precision and numeric stepping now handle additional cases, including block control flow and endpoint behavior.
…#step loop (#89)
- Kernel#Integer and #Float are C# entry points (KernelOps.ToInteger/ToFloat).
An Integer, a finite Float, a String with or without a radix, and the
exception: keyword alone are answered there; everything else goes to the
prelude (__ir_Integer_slow__, __ir_Float_slow__). The Ruby wrapper
`def Integer(arg, base = nil, exception: true)` mixed an optional
parameter with a keyword, which PrismAstBridge lowers to a splat that the
method JIT does not take: ~0.35-1 us a call. Integer("42") is now ~75 ns
(CRuby ~85), Integer(4.2) ~20 ns (was ~585).
A radix given as nil is a TypeError, as in MRI, and a radix that is not a
number raises whatever exception: says.
- Integer#round/floor/ceil/truncate of a Fixnum with a negative ndigits use
long arithmetic instead of BigInteger (167 -> 19 ns for round(-2)).
- Range#first and #last without a count are C# (134 -> 10 ns); with a count
they go to the prelude (__first_n__, __last_n__). (..5).last(2) is [4, 5]
as in MRI, where it raised.
- ArithmeticSequence keeps how it was written and builds its inspect text only
when asked; Range#% and #step no longer build it on every call.
- The Float loop of Numeric#step / Range#step is C# (KernelOps.FloatStep): a
method that yields is not one the JIT takes. (1.0..100.0).step(0.5) {} went
from ~35 to ~15 us.

The PR updates Kernel conversions, Fixnum rounding, Range endpoint methods, and arithmetic-sequence iteration and inspection. It also adds support for optional positional parameters before keyword parameters across Prism lowering, runtime call handling, and JIT compilation, with tests for these changes.
Fixnum rounding uses long arithmetic when possible and falls back to the existing BigInteger operations when needed.
Range first and last methods Src/Libraries/Builtins/RangeOps.cs, Src/StdLib/ironruby/ruby4.rb, Src/IronRuby.Tests/Runtime/MiscTests.cs
first and last are registered separately from begin and end. Count-based calls use private helpers, and last(count) handles beginless Integer ranges.
Step iteration, inspection, and tests Src/Libraries/Builtins/KernelOps.cs, Src/StdLib/ironruby/ruby4.rb, Src/IronRuby.Tests/RubyTests.cs, Src/IronRuby.Tests/Runtime/MiscTests.cs
Step sequences store structured inspection metadata. Float iteration delegates to Kernel.__ir_float_step__. Tests cover conversions, rounding, ranges, and stepping.
Optional Positional and Keyword Parameters

Summary
Signature lowering and parameter initialization Src/Prism/PrismAstBridge.cs, Src/Ruby/Compiler/Ast/Parameters.cs
Prism retains eligible optional positional parameters before keyword parameters. Parameter initialization can shift a keyword hash from an optional positional slot and fill defaults.
Keyword call binding and arity errors Src/Ruby/Runtime/Calls/RubyMethodInfo.cs, Src/Ruby/Runtime/RubyOps.cs
Fixed-argument calls check keyword-method positional bounds. Arity errors account for keyword-marked hashes and required keywords.
JIT keyword argument support and tests Src/Ruby/Runtime/Jit/*, Src/IronRuby.Tests/RubyTests.cs, Src/IronRuby.Tests/Runtime/MiscTests.cs
JIT recognition and entry handling account for optional positionals before keywords. Tests cover defaults, errors, reflection, forwarding, super, and JIT-specialized calls.

…kes them (#89)
`def m(a, b = 2, k: 3)` was lowered to `def m(*?args?)` plus a prologue
that took the splat apart, and the method JIT does not take a splat: every
call went through the generic body, ~150 ns where `def m(a, k: 3)` costs
~20. Now:
- PrismAstBridge keeps the optionals as optional parameters and lowers
the keywords after them, as it already did after mandatory ones
(Parameters.KeywordsAfterOptionals). A keyword call that leaves an
optional out passes its keyword hash where that optional is; the body
moves it to the keyword parameter before any default runs
(Parameters.TransformOptionalsInitialization).
- The method JIT recognizes such a method when the optional defaults are
literals (JitKeywords.OptionalPositionals): the entry and the profiler
move the hash the same way (JitKeywords.ShiftKeywords), the separation
check looks at the last mandatory parameter, and the direct keyword
entry is not built for them. f(1) on `def f(a, b = nil, exception: true)`
went from ~145 to ~18 ns.
- The arity error of a call to any method with keywords is worded from the
declared signature (RubyOps.MakeKeywordMethodArityError): the hidden
keyword parameter is not counted, nor is the keyword hash, and required
keywords are named, as in MRI - `def f(a, k: 1); f` said "expected 1..2".
- Method#parameters lists required keywords before optional ones, as MRI
does.

Fix the doc comment: the old <summary> is now orphaned.
The new MakeKeywordMethodArityError was inserted after the existing <summary> for MakeWrongNumberOfArgumentsErrorN. That summary (lines 3371-3374) now sits above the new method. It describes the wrong member.
Two <summary> blocks are now stacked on one member. MakeWrongNumberOfArgumentsErrorN has no summary.
Move the old summary back down to MakeWrongNumberOfArgumentsErrorN. Place the new method and its summary before the old one.
