Remove the legacy parser; run Rails 8.1 + SQLite and popular gems on Windows - #34
Prism becomes IronRuby's only parser, and a default rails new app now runs on Windows: scaffold, migrations, importmap/Turbo/Stimulus and bin/rails server through Puma and sqlite3. Docs/rails-on-windows.md has the findings in full.
Legacy parser removed
The gppg grammar and runtime (Parser.y, Parser.Generated.cs, GPPG.cs, ParserStack.cs, ...), the lexer half of Tokenizer.cs, RubyContext.LegacyParser, the legacy -n/-p wrapping and the DLR TokenizerService are gone, about 18,000 lines in all.
-X:UsePrism is accepted and ignored; the launchers no longer pass it.
The C# suite runs every test on prism. Tests of 1.8/1.9-only control flow are removed, the rest expect CRuby 4's output and parse warnings, and the parser tests become NumberLiteralTests.
Rails and RubyGems on Windows
File#flock via LockFileEx, so gem install rails can write binstubs.
No RLIMIT_*/PRIO_* constants, and getrlimit & co are not-implemented stubs, as in CRuby (Bundler's net-http-persistent).
IO readiness without libc poll (IO#readpartial after eof?).
IO#ioctl is a not-implemented stub; invalid path characters raise Errno::EINVAL.
Binstubs whose #! names ir.exe count as Ruby.
Bundler answers platforms: for the dotnet platform (tzinfo-data); bindex's Exception#bindings; no bundled_gems warning for IronRuby's own fiddle.
attr_* applies the scope's visibility only when self is the module (importmap-rails).
Paths:
File.dirname/basename handle drive-relative and UNC paths.
realpath raises ENOENT for a missing path.
Dir.pwd keeps 8.3 short names.
Dir.home uses forward slashes.
Encodings: filesystem, locale and default external are UTF-8, and so are ENV and ARGV.
Gems
A requirement for prism 1.x or bigdecimal 2.x/3.x is read with its upper bound lifted where the built-in version then satisfies it. With that, rubocop, rubocop-ast, standard, minitest 6 and prawn activate, under Bundler too.
Ripper reads a Symbol's name from prism 2.0's content_loc (rspec).
Method#source_location is nil for prelude methods that are C in MRI (method_source, pry), from a list generated by Util/gen-internal-methods.rb.
New prawn exercise. listen's exercise no longer races listen's first snapshot.
Gem sweep against CRuby 4.0:
81 gems give byte-identical output.
19 load but have no exercise.
5 fail to load as expected: native code, or Linux-only.
ruby/spec language
At CI's pinned revisions, all 2,921 examples pass on Windows.
Interpolated symbols with invalid bytes raise EncodingError.
Lazy empty-iteration regexp loops are counted, so .NET 10 stops them as Onigmo does.
defined?(A::B::C) never calls const_missing.
A nested BEGIN runs first.
eval("__FILE__") takes the first frame that names a file.
Tested
Full C# suite passes (Debug, net10.0, Windows).
ruby/spec language, plus the File, Dir and Encoding specs that failed on Windows before.
The gem sweep above, and the Rails app end to end.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Prism is now the default and only Ruby parser; -X:UsePrism remains accepted but has no effect.
Improved Windows support for file locking, path handling, UTF-8 defaults, and home-directory detection.
Improved compatibility with popular gems, including Prawn and Bundler platform handling.
Bug Fixes
Corrected constant checks, accessor visibility, integer-string parsing, and regular-expression behavior.
Improved file-read readiness checks and error reporting for invalid Windows paths.
Improved handling of BEGIN blocks and source locations.
Documentation
Added Windows Rails testing results, including known limitations and open issues.
RubyFieldInfo built a field store as Assign(Field(Convert(target, S), f), v).
Convert unboxes into a temporary, so once the rule is compiled the store
changes that copy and the box Ruby holds keeps its old fields - silently.
OpenSSL::PKey fills RSAParameters / DSAParameters / ECParameters this way, so
a PEM loaded about 35 times and then failed for the rest of the process
("The specified RSA parameters are not valid"): the interpreter updated the
box, compiled code did not. With today's upstream DLR the interpreter copies
too (IronLanguages/dlr#368), and it fails on the first load.
The store now goes through Unbox, which addresses the value inside the box,
in compiled and interpreted code alike. Calls to mutating methods on a boxed
struct already reached the box.
ClrValueTypes1, commented out since 2011 as "fails with /noadaptive", is the
same bug and runs again; ClrValueTypes3 fills S2 and RSAParameters in a method
called 100 times and checks every result.
With TZ unset the zone came from /etc/localtime, and where there is none
(Windows) from TimeZoneInfo.Local's base offset alone, so all summer
Time.now, Time.local, Time.at and File.mtime were an hour off and isdst was
false. The zone is now backed by TimeZoneInfo there, transitions included.
An Olson TZ ("Europe/Zurich") without a zoneinfo file falls back to
TimeZoneInfo as well, instead of to UTC; a POSIX string ("EST5EDT", "JST-9")
keeps its own meaning.
Such a zone is named by its id, "W. Europe Standard Time", winter and summer,
which is what CRuby on Windows reports. StandardName is in the language of the
Windows installation: on a German one it was "Mitteleuropäische Zeit", which
Time#zone printed garbled and Marshal.dump of a local time stopped the
process on (CreateAscii's assertion in a Debug build).
ruby/spec on Windows: core/time 1 failure -> 0, core/file/mtime and
core/file/stat/mtime 1 -> 0 each. Time_MachineZone1 compares with .NET's own
answer, so it holds in any machine zone; Time_OlsonZone1 sets TZ.
require "zlib" was a LoadError on Windows: there is no libz there, and the
binding's z_stream is laid out for LP64. Every .NET runtime carries zlib in
System.IO.Compression.Native, though (zlib-ng since .NET 9, Intel's zlib in
.NET 8), behind CompressionNative_* exports over its own PAL_ZStream.
ClrZlib runs LibZ's entry points on those exports, so ZStream, Inflate,
Deflate and the gzip classes in zlib.rb work unchanged: the z_stream record
is only managed code's on Windows; next_in/avail_in/next_out/avail_out go to
the PAL stream and back, and total_in, total_out and adler (the running
adler32/crc32, or the dictionary id on Z_NEED_DICT) are kept as libz keeps
them. adler32, crc32, their _combine and crc_table are computed as zlib does.
A reset begins the stream again with its parameters (.NET 8 exports no reset).
What the exports leave out raises NotImplementedError: set_dictionary,
Deflate#params once data has gone in, Inflate#sync_point?. Linux and macOS
keep calling libz exactly as before.
ruby/spec library/zlib on Windows: 148 examples, 2 failures (they compare
classic zlib's exact compressed bytes), 3 errors (the NotImplementedErrors);
before, all 42 files were the LoadError. Zlib_Streams1 inflates input CRuby
compressed and checks round trips, totals, adler and the checksums, so it
holds on libz and on .NET's zlib alike.
Process.spawn(cmd, out: File::NULL) failed on Windows with ENOENT, and
Process.kill raised System::DllNotFoundException.
IO::NULL (and File::NULL) came from the prelude as "/dev/null" everywhere;
Windows has no such file, so the redirect could not be opened. It is "NUL"
there, as in CRuby. The error itself named the program, not the file:
WindowsSpawn handed back only -errno and the prelude filled in the command.
A redirection that cannot be opened now raises with its own path - ENOENT,
EACCES, or EISDIR for a directory - as CRuby does, which opens it in the
parent.
Process.kill P/Invoked libc's kill(), which Windows does not have.
WindowsSpawn.Kill does what CRuby's win32 kill() does: KILL is
TerminateProcess (exit code 0, as there), 0 reports whether the process still
runs (ESRCH once it has exited), INT is a console Ctrl+C - Ctrl+Break aimed at
a process group - and every other signal is EINVAL.
ruby/spec on Windows: core/process/kill 2 errors -> 0; core/process/spawn,
core/kernel/spawn and core/kernel/system unchanged otherwise.
Process_SpawnKill1 spawns a child that blocks on a pipe, signals 0 and KILL,
waits, and checks a missing redirection is named.
RFC 8259 has U+0000-U+001F escaped inside a string, and the json gem raises
"invalid ASCII control character in string" for an unescaped one. IronRuby's
parser took them as they were, so a document with a literal line break in a
value parsed here and failed on CRuby - code that falls back on a
ParserError for exactly that case never ran its fallback.
JSON.parse(source, allow_control_characters: true), the gem's option since
2.18.0 (the API version this JSON reports), lets them through. DEL and
escaped control characters stay fine.
net/http was reported "not dependable on Windows, where IO.select on a socket
is poll(2)". Measured: plain sockets are fine (Socket.Select on Windows, and
read_timeout fires); over TLS nothing times out - SSLSocket's read_nonblock,
write_nonblock and connect_nonblock block in SslStream and never return
:wait_readable, which is the only path net/protocol applies read_timeout on -
and ca_file/cert_store/verify_callback are not consulted.
Docs/net-http-over-tls.md has the diagnosis and a two-stage proposal:
timeouts on the blocking SslStream calls plus the context's CAs first (small),
real non-blocking reads through IoReadiness later. Util/net-http-tls-server.rb
(CRuby) and Util/net-http-tls-check.rb reproduce both findings.

Prism is now IronRuby's only parser, and a default `rails new` app runs on

filesystem/locale/default external encodings, ENV and ARGV.

On Windows, calling File#flock more than once on the same file object can hang a blocking call or make a non-blocking call report failure. This affects tools that re-lock a file or upgrade a shared lock to an exclusive one. Track or release the existing lock before applying a new one, then merge.

- Dir.chdir with a relative path moved twice on Windows ("..": up two
levels): the directory was set through .NET and then again through
SetCurrentDirectoryW, each resolving it from where the last left off. It
is set once now, with .NET only for the failure and its exception.
- File.expand_path("~") looks at USERPROFILE before HOMEDRIVE + HOMEPATH,
as CRuby and Dir.home do.
- Lifting a prism/bigdecimal requirement removes only the bound "~>"
implies; an explicit "< 4" stays.
- defined? clears the private-constant reference that #const_missing would
otherwise have consumed.
- The nested-BEGIN walk runs on a fresh stack when the current one is low.
- Tests: Dir_ChdirRelative1, File_ExpandTildeOrder1.
On Unix .NET emulates FileShare with a flock(2) of its own on every file it
opens. ir turns that off (Ruby.Console.csproj), the test host did not, so
File_FlockReadpartialRlimit1 - File#flock(LOCK_EX) with a second File.open
of the same file - waited forever behind the hidden shared lock and hung the
Linux CI jobs. Checked on Ubuntu 24.04: the test hangs without this and
passes with it, and so does the whole suite.

Handle an existing lock before requesting another exclusive lock.
If a file already holds LOCK_EX, a second flock(LOCK_EX) on the same RubyFile calls LockFileEx for the same range. Windows rejects the overlapping exclusive lock. A blocking call then retries forever; a LOCK_NB call returns false instead of succeeding. A change from LOCK_SH to LOCK_EX has the same problem. Track the lock held by the handle and implement repeated requests and mode changes as flock operations. (man7.org)

flock mode changes so blocking and nonblocking requests do not fail or retry
