Closes #359

Follow-ups to #356 (quick timers and reminders).

What changed

Alarms ("wake me at 7", "set an alarm for 6:30")

  • New reminder kind alarm (same reminders table and clock; KINDS and the REST POST /api/reminders take it) and
    a new tool set_alarm(at, in_minutes, label) (risk write, internal) in the "Timers & reminders" plugin.
  • Grammar (fastpath/en.py): "wake me (up) at 7", "wake me up at 6:30 am", "set an alarm for 6:30 (tomorrow)",
    "set an alarm for tomorrow at 7", "set a 6:30 alarm", "set an alarm for 7 called gym", "wake me up in 20 minutes".
    An alarm is the one place a time without AM/PM is fine, as on a phone: the next 6:30; for "wake me" the next one
    before 7 PM (7 AM, while a nap "wake me at 4" at 3 PM is 4 PM); with "tomorrow" the morning one. The reply always
    says which ("Alarm set for 7:00 AM tomorrow."). Repeating wishes, day names, "today" at a passed time and "tomorrow
    morning" still go to the model. "what alarms do I have", "when is my alarm", "turn off the gym alarm" and
    "cancel all alarms" work through the existing list/cancel commands. With no Sentient alarm set, "turn off the
    alarm" goes to the model, since with Home Assistant (Home Assistant as a first-class integration #175, rebased on it) it may mean the house alarm, which never
    goes through a quick command.
  • When it rings: a reminder notification titled "Alarm" ("It's 7:00 AM."), payload.event: "alarm". The window
    shows an alarm banner with Stop and plays a chime made with Web Audio (no sound file shipped) until Stop, 3
    minutes at most (desktop/src/stores/alarm.ts, components/shell/AlarmBanner.tsx). The banner says "Ringing" only
    while the audio output is really running, and "Can't play sound" otherwise.
  • Activity timeline: "Your alarm rings" or "Your gym alarm rings" (coming up) and "Your alarm rang".

"What's next on my calendar"

  • "what's next on my calendar", "what's my next meeting", "when is my next meeting", "what do I have next"... call
    gcal_list_events (read; now to 7 days ahead, 10 events) with no model and answer from the events: the event on now
    ("Right now: Standup, until 3:15 PM."), the next one with day, time and short place, and the one after it on the same
    day, or "Nothing on your calendar in the next 7 days."
  • With no calendar connected (integrations.is_connected("gcalendar") false) or the tool behind an Ask or Never rule,
    it falls through to the model unchanged, which can use another calendar or say to connect one. "What's next" alone,
    another day, or anything more in the message also go to the model.

Reminders on your phone

  • New setting channels.deliver_reminders (off by default), shown as Reminders and alarms on your phone too under
    Devices > Messaging apps. When on, a reminder or alarm set outside a paired chat (the window, voice) also goes to
    every paired chat whose delivery is on. Timers stay where they were set; reminders set in a chat still go to that
    chat. Activity timeline: "Your reminders and alarms go to this chat too" (reason: "reminder_copy").
  • docs/API.md sections 14 and 23, CHANGELOG. The Settings label for chat.quick_commands now mentions alarms and the
    calendar.

Tests

  • tests/test_quick_alarms_calendar.py (new, 54): 15 alarm phrasings with exact times, 14 that must reach the model,
    9 calendar phrasings, list/cancel for alarms, alarm and calendar wording (event now, next, after that, all day,
    cancelled, nothing), an alarm set and fired with no model call, cancel by name, the calendar read with no model, no
    calendar connected goes to the model, a Never rule goes to the model, the calendar works without the reminders
    service, "turn off the alarm" with none set goes to the model.
  • tests/channels/test_quick_commands.py: with the setting on, a desktop reminder and alarm go to the paired Telegram
    chat (reason: "reminder_copy") and a desktop timer does not; with it off (the default) a desktop alarm stays on the
    desktop.
  • Existing quick-command tests unchanged and passing. Full suite (rebased on main with Home Assistant): 2232 passed, 2 skipped. Ruff clean. npm run typecheck and npm run build clean.

Real tests (engine and app from this branch, fresh test homes)

No model was needed: these are all quick commands. In the engine run, Ollama's address pointed at a closed port, so any
model call would have failed and logged; the log has 0 model job lines.

1. An alarm set and ringing in the built app (npm run build, the app on a Maya Rao seeded home, driven over its
own DevTools port): typed "set an alarm in 1 minute" in a new chat.

reply after 0.5 s: "Alarm set for 1 minute from now, at 7:23 PM."
banner after 61.8 s: "Alarm It's 7:23 PM. / Ringing / Stop" (audio output running)
after Stop: banner gone
engine log:
  INFO sentient.reminders.service: alarm f67ddb16 set for 2026-10-15T13:53:28Z (quick, from desktop)
  INFO sentient.agent.loop: quick command: alarm (en) done in 37 ms with no model call
  INFO sentient.reminders.service: alarm f67ddb16 fired

Screenshot (looked at): the orange alarm banner across the top of the window, alarm clock icon, "Alarm It's 7:23 PM.",
a speaker icon with "Ringing" and a Stop button; below it the chat with "set an alarm in 1 minute", the "Set alarm
label: "", in_minutes: 1" tool row and "Alarm set for 1 minute from now, at 7:23 PM."; the "Alarm / It's 7:23 PM."
toast bottom right. A second screenshot shows the new Reminders and alarms on your phone too switch under
Devices > Messaging apps, below the Telegram, Discord and WhatsApp cards.

2. A desktop reminder through the fake Telegram API (engine on 8789, SENTIENT_TELEGRAM_API pointed at a local
Bot API double, made-up bot token in the test home's own keychain namespace, chat 4242 paired with /pair <code>):

deliver_reminders = True
desktop chat "remind me in 1 minute to stretch"  -> set_reminder {"message": "stretch", "in_minutes": 1.0}
                                                  done: "OK, I'll remind you to stretch in 1 minute." (0.12 s)
desktop chat "wake me up in 1 minute"            -> set_alarm {"label": "", "in_minutes": 1.0}
                                                  done: "Alarm set for 1 minute from now, at 7:26 PM." (0.06 s)
fake Telegram sendMessage at 19:26:38 to chat 4242: "<b>Reminder</b>\nStretch"
fake Telegram sendMessage at 19:26:39 to chat 4242: "<b>Alarm</b>\nIt's 7:26 PM."
Activity timeline: "Sent to Telegram: Reminder | ... Your reminders and alarms go to this chat too"

deliver_reminders = False
desktop chat "remind me in 1 minute to drink water" -> fired at 19:27:54, nothing sent to Telegram

3. "What's next on my calendar" against a fake calendar (same engine; Google Calendar's API address pointed at a
local double that only returns the fictional Maya Rao's events, the integration treated as connected with a made-up
access token; the real gcal_list_events code ran):

"What's next on my calendar?" -> gcal_list_events {"max_results": 10}
  done (0.41 s): "Next on your calendar: Design review with Maya Rao, today at 8:06 PM (Room 4). After that: Maya Rao:
  call with the printer, today at 9:26 PM."
"when is my next meeting" -> the same answer (0.42 s)
fake calendar saw: GET /calendar/v3/calendars/primary/events {timeMin: now, timeMax: +7 days, singleEvents, orderBy:
  startTime, maxResults: 10}
engine log: quick command: calendar_next (en) done in 381 ms with no model call

Left for the owner

  • The calendar quick answer reads Google Calendar only (the one calendar integration Sentient has). A calendar from an
    MCP server falls through to the model.
  • "Stop the alarm" said in chat while it rings cancels a scheduled alarm (there is none), so it answers "You don't have
    any alarms set."; the ringing stops with the banner's Stop. Saying it could also silence the window: a small
    follow-up if wanted.
  • Seen while testing, outside this issue: scripts/seed_safety.py leaves the seeded demo-planning task in
    planning, so the app plans it with the local model as soon as it starts. In the first app run that used qwen3:8b
    for about 1.5 minutes before I stopped the app (I then declined that task in the test home and pointed its Ollama
    address at a closed port for the second run).

Review round 1 (CodeRabbit: 1 major, 2 minor, all fixed)

  • Major: with the setting on, a reminder set in a messaging chat whose pairing is gone no longer falls back to the
    other delivery chats (only reminders set outside a messaging chat are copied), and a failed chat lookup fails closed
    to the desktop. The suggested fix (no copy whenever there is a session) would have stopped desktop-chat reminders
    too, so the check uses the reminder's channel instead.
  • An all-day event today (or one spanning several days) no longer hides a meeting later today: "All day today: Maya's
    birthday. Next: Design review with Maya Rao, today at 4:30 PM (Room 4)."
  • The delivery test waits for both delivery rows.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Set, list, and cancel alarms using quick commands. When an alarm rings, a desktop banner shows its details and offers a Stop button with an audible chime.
    • Ask quick commands about upcoming calendar events when Calendar is connected.
    • Optionally send reminders and alarms set outside a chat to paired messaging chats. This setting is off by default.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Alarm activity now indicates whether alarms rang or were cancelled.

…rs on your phone

Alarms are a quick command with a ringing banner and chime in the window; "what's next on my calendar" reads the connected Google Calendar with no model call and otherwise goes to the model; channels.deliver_reminders sends reminders and alarms set on the desktop to the delivery chats too. Closes #359.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add alarm creation, listing, and cancellation to quick commands, plus calendar lookups that can run without a model call. Alarm notifications can ring in the desktop app. A default-off setting controls whether reminders and alarms set outside paired chats are also delivered to those chats.

Changes: Alarms, calendar, and reminder delivery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse alarm and calendar commands
sentient/agent/fastpath/base.py, sentient/agent/fastpath/en.py, sentient/config/schema.py, desktop/src/lib/types.ts, docs/API.md, tests/test_quick_alarms_calendar.py
The fast path recognizes alarm and calendar requests. Alarm parsing handles times, labels, listing, and cancellation. Calendar responses format eligible events.
Plan commands and schedule alarms
sentient/agent/fastpath/__init__.py, sentient/reminders/service.py, sentient/reminders/tools.py, docs/API.md, tests/test_quick_alarms_calendar.py
The planner routes calendar requests to the connected calendar tool and creates alarm calls. Reminder tools and services support alarm scheduling, filtering, cancellation, firing, and API creation.
Ring and display desktop alarms
desktop/src/stores/alarm.ts, desktop/src/lib/events.ts, desktop/src/components/shell/AlarmBanner.tsx, desktop/src/components/shell/AppShell.tsx, sentient/activity/timeline.py, CHANGELOG.md
The desktop rings on alarm notifications, displays alarm details and playback status, and provides a Stop action. Ringing stops when stopped or after three minutes.
Configure and route reminder delivery
sentient/config/schema.py, sentient/channels/service.py, sentient/channels/schema.sql, sentient/activity/words.py, desktop/src/features/channels/MessagingApps.tsx, desktop/src/features/settings/SchemaForm.tsx, docs/API.md, tests/channels/test_quick_commands.py
The default-off channels.deliver_reminders setting controls delivery of locally set reminders and alarms to paired chats. Delivery records use reminder_copy for copied notifications.

A calendar request may name an unrelated event, and an alarm left ringing for three minutes disappears without being dismissed. Both are bounded issues to address before or shortly after merge.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 759e4

The new calendar shortcut appears to omit safeguards used by ordinary calendar reads: recording that outside content entered the conversation and keeping oversized private results in conversation-specific storage. Delivery to paired chats is default-off and retains recipient controls, which limits that separate exposure.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new calendar quick path persists third-party event content without updating the conversation's outside-content state. In a conversation already cached as clean, subsequent turns reuse that empty state rather than rescanning history, potentially omitting the mandatory outbound approval gate after outside content. The quick executor predates this PR, but the calendar reader newly brings externally authored titles and descriptions through it. Exploitation requires a later model-directed action and permissive ordinary authorization; prompt marking and deterministic outbound checks remain countercontrols.
  • Medium · security · inferred: Oversized calendar results from an incognito quick turn use the shared outputs folder. The quick executor sets the incognito context but calls the result-storage helper without its private-folder argument, whereas normal tool recording explicitly selects conversation-owned incognito storage. Calendar results include descriptions and attendee information, expanding the privacy significance of this inherited executor omission. Survival after incognito deletion was not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The calendar concerns are bounded to conversations using the connected calendar shortcut. An attacker would need influence over returned calendar content and a later susceptible model interaction to exploit missing provenance; potential downstream authority depends on the user's enabled tools and ordinary approval policy. The storage concern additionally requires an incognito session and a result exceeding the configured output limit.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The security-relevant transition is externally authored calendar content entering stored conversation history through an executor that omits the normal recorder. The inferred attack path continues on a later model turn, not during the deterministic calendar reply. This is an introduced caller-to-control mismatch despite the executor itself being unchanged.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Default notification copies require connected channels and paired chats with delivery enabled. Originating-chat delivery uses an explicit paired target. The fallback excludes configured messaging-channel origins, preventing an unresolvable chat-origin reminder from being redistributed through the new local-copy branch.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The inherited firing protocol marks a reminder fired before creating its notification. Ordinary exceptions can restore scheduling when no notification exists, but cancellation propagates without that recovery. Alarms inherit this interruption window; the comparison did not establish a newly weakened security guarantee, so it is not retained as a separate PR concern.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Share content-provenance persistence and incognito output ownership between ordinary and quick tool execution, so adding another external quick command cannot silently omit these controls.

…chat reminders never go to other chats

Review: all-day events today (including ones spanning several days) get their own line before the next event; a reminder set in a messaging chat that is no longer paired stays on the desktop, and a failed lookup fails closed; the delivery test waits for both rows.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Honor the “today” qualifier in calendar requests.

These patterns accept “today”, but Command("calendar_next") does not carry that limit. The supplied planner requests the tool’s default seven-day range. If today has no upcoming event and tomorrow does, the quick answer can report tomorrow’s event to a user who asked about today. Restrict the range for these matches, or leave qualified requests to the model.

Keep “next meeting” requests out of the unfiltered quick answer.

When the next calendar event is not a meeting, this pattern still selects calendar_next. The supplied planner calls gcal_list_events without its query argument, so the quick answer can name that unrelated event instead of the next meeting. Filter by the requested event type, or let the model handle type-specific requests that the quick path cannot distinguish.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep timed-out alarms visible until dismissal.

When the three-minute timeout fires, get().stop() clears ringing. AlarmBanner renders only while ringing exists, so the banner and its Stop button disappear without user action. Silence the chime and set playing to false, but preserve ringing so the user can still dismiss the alarm.

Suggested fix
     limit = window.setTimeout(() => {
-      if (get().ringing?.id === n.id) get().stop()
+      if (get().ringing?.id === n.id) {
+        silence()
+        set({ playing: false })
+      }
     }, MAX_RING_MS)

Update the MAX_RING_MS timeout in useAlarm’s ring method so it silences the
chime and sets playing to false without clearing ringing. Preserve the alarm
banner and Stop action until the user dismisses the alarm.
