Summary

  • simulate-mouse-ui Click and LongPress now reach UI Toolkit controls at the SimX/SimY that screenshot --annotate-elements reports, with or without an EventSystem.
  • Responses name the UI system that was hit (UiSystem: UGUI, UIToolkit, or "" for physics targets) and its path in the annotation's form (HitPath).

User Impact

  • Before: a click at an annotated UI Toolkit control reported "no UI element hit" or landed beside the control. The uGUI bridge to UI Toolkit flips Y with Screen.height, which outside the player loop is the size of whichever Editor view drew last. Scenes without an EventSystem could not be clicked at all.
  • After: the control under the point is found directly in its panel, so the press lands on the annotated control regardless of Screen. Where uGUI and a panel overlap, the uGUI element wins only when its Canvas sorts above the panel, as with real input. UI Toolkit presses work without an EventSystem; a click with neither an EventSystem nor a UI Toolkit control under the point fails and says so.
  • Unchanged: uGUI clicks, bypass presses, and drags. Drags still go through the uGUI EventSystem; a follow-up PR brings them to UI Toolkit. A --target-path containing # that matches nothing now explains that UI Toolkit paths are not accepted there.

Changes

  • The shared UI Toolkit module gains a pointer-target lookup: panels front to back, the outermost control an annotation would list, and pointer events sent through ScreenToPanel. It does nothing once the owning document is disabled.
  • Click and long press go through a press target, either uGUI (unchanged behaviour) or UI Toolkit. A resolver picks one by the sort-order rule; the uGUI raycast now leaves out the bridge's panel hits.
  • The EventSystem check moves from the start of every command to where it is needed: bypass presses and drags.
  • Docs: the simulate-mouse-ui skill (the plain one-shot Drag example is dropped to keep SKILL.md under 8,000 bytes) and a new references/ui-toolkit.md, plus the output reference, the simulate-mouse-input and screenshot references, and the package tool docs. Generated skill copies and the tool catalog are regenerated.

Input space (Click / LongPress)

E = EventSystem, T = UI Toolkit control under the point, G = uGUI hit without the bridge's panel hits, s = G's raycaster sort priority, p = floor(panel sortingOrder).

Input Before After
E, no T, G uGUI uGUI (UiSystem UGUI)
E, no T, only a displaced panel hit sent to the panel's GameObject at a displaced point no hit
E, T, no G displaced or no hit UI Toolkit
E, T, G, s > p uGUI uGUI
E, T, G, s <= p uGUI (canvas-space preference) UI Toolkit
E, T, G with no handler, s > p no hit no hit (uGUI blocks the panel)
no E, T fails: no EventSystem UI Toolkit
no E, no T fails: no EventSystem fails, naming both
bypass without E fails: no EventSystem same message
drag without E fails: no EventSystem same message, but an option error (a negative DragSpeed, for example) is reported first
LongPress without E and with an invalid Duration fails: no EventSystem the Duration error is reported first
Click / LongPress without E during a split drag fails: no EventSystem refused as overlapping the split drag
UI Toolkit press handler throws — the button is released, then the exception ends the command
document disabled between resolving and pressing — succeeds, sends nothing
two panels with the same sortingOrder overlapping — not supported (Unity's creation order is not exposed); documented

When a Click or LongPress fails for lack of an EventSystem, the overlay canvas has already been created and the Input System mouse position synced; neither takes part in hit testing.

…odule

Only the module builds these results; callers read them. An internal
constructor makes that a compiler rule rather than a convention.
… pointer input

simulate-mouse-ui needs to press UI Toolkit controls at the points
screenshot annotations report. Going through the uGUI bridge does not
work there: it flips Y with Screen.height, which outside the player
loop is the size of whichever Editor view was drawn last.

UIToolkitScreenElements.FindPointerTarget maps the point onto each
panel with the same function Unity applies to input, tries panels
front to back, and reports the outermost control around the picked
element, so the path matches the annotation even on a scrollbar's
arrow or a slider's input field. Elements outside every document,
such as an open dropdown's menu, get no path.

The returned target sends pointer down, move and up events to the
panel without a target, so Unity delivers them to the element
holding the pointer or under it, as with real input. Once the owning
document is disabled or destroyed, the target sends nothing and
throws nothing, because that can happen between resolving and
pressing and during cleanup.
…aviour unchanged)

Clicks and long presses are about to reach UI Toolkit controls as well
as uGUI ones. The executor now works with one IMouseUiPressTarget and
the hit report it captured before the first await, so a second kind
of target can slot in without new branches in the timeout, pause and
cleanup paths.

UguiPressTarget carries the existing uGUI dispatch unchanged: the
click events, the long-press pointer down, and the pointer up in the
finally, with the release decision still captured as a plain bool.
The response factory takes the hit report instead of a name and a
hit flag. The source guard test now checks the captured report and
the release bool in their new places.

The SimulateMouseUi assembly references the shared UI Toolkit module,
which the next change uses.
…rols

A click at a screenshot annotation's SimX/SimY on a UI Toolkit control
used to report "no UI element hit": the uGUI bridge to UI Toolkit flips
Y with Screen.height, which outside the player loop is the size of the
last Editor view drawn, so the press landed beside the control.

Clicks and long presses now look up the UI Toolkit control at the
requested point directly and send it pointer events, so the result
no longer depends on Screen. The uGUI side leaves out the bridge's
panel hits. Where both are under the point, the uGUI hit wins only
when its raycaster's sort priority is greater than the panel's sorting
order, the same order the EventSystem applies to real input; a uGUI
image without handlers in front still blocks the panel.

UI Toolkit presses work without an EventSystem. A click with neither
an EventSystem nor a UI Toolkit control under the point fails and
names both. Bypass presses and drags still need an EventSystem and
fail with the same message as before, and a bypass path containing
'#' that matches nothing explains that UI Toolkit paths are not
accepted there.

Responses add UiSystem (UGUI, empty for physics targets, UIToolkit)
and HitPath in the form annotations use, and UI Toolkit hits are
named as such in the message.
…ated points

The UI Toolkit annotation E2E now drives simulate-mouse-ui at the
coordinates the elements-only capture reports, in both the POSIX and
PowerShell scripts:

- a click on a button reports UIToolkit, its annotation path and name,
and a click on a scrollbar reports the scrollbar, not a part inside it
- a click on the covered part of a button reaches the panel in front,
and a click at the annotated point reaches the button
- a disabled button receives the press without reacting
- a long press clicks once on release
- the uGUI button still reacts and reports UGUI
- a click still works after the EventSystem is disabled

The existing simulate-mouse-input click stays as its own step. The
listener and EventSystem changes are made in PlayMode only and go away
when the script stops PlayMode.
…cument behind it

Disabling a document leaves its shared panel alive, so a press sent
anyway hits nothing and the test could not tell sending from not
sending. A second document behind it on the same panel now counts any
press that gets through.
…lkit

The simulate-mouse-ui skill now names UI Toolkit, drops the claim that
it cannot reach UI Toolkit entries, and explains in a new reference how
presses are delivered, how overlaps with uGUI are decided, that no
EventSystem is needed, and what is not supported. The output reference
documents UiSystem and HitPath. The simulate-mouse-input, screenshot
annotation, and package tool docs point to simulate-mouse-ui for UI
Toolkit controls. Generated skill copies and the tool catalog are
regenerated.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8c1f5

Clicks may fail where a custom raycaster returns a hit without a module that overlaps a UI Toolkit control. Guard that case before merging, or accept the narrow risk.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8c1f5

The new UI access remains behind existing tool permission checks and stays within the current Unity session. No authorization bypass was established. Exceptional pointer cleanup and document-teardown behavior remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The intended authority expansion reaches active runtime Toolkit controls in the same Unity session. Pointer events can trigger their existing application handlers; downstream privileges and application-specific effects were not inspected.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The registered-tool path still checks tool enablement and security permission before obtaining an execution lease. Those admission controls are unchanged against the full PR base. Removing EventSystem from normal Toolkit presses does not remove these controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Normal registered mouse-simulation requests hold an exclusive execution lease across the awaited command. Shared-slot execution and cancelled-lease revocation exceptions apply only to execute-dynamic-code, countering the suspected overlap between ordinary mouse-simulation requests.
  • observed — Exceptional cleanup remains evidence-limited: initial pointer-down is outside the long-press finally boundary, and Release sends nothing once the document is unavailable. The disabled-during-hold test checks successful completion but not subsequent shared-pointer state. The down-before-finally ordering predates this PR for uGUI; its Toolkit exposure is new, without a verified stranded-state outcome.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish an explicit exceptional-termination contract for Toolkit presses: confirm shared button and capture state after throwing callbacks and document disable, destroy, or re-enable, while preserving the prohibition on stale events reaching another document.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Guard against a null raycaster module before reading sortOrderPriority.

UiRaycastHelper.ChooseHit can return the Canvas-space hit, and that hit always has a module. An EventSystem RaycastResult can still have a null module if a custom raycaster leaves it unset. In that case, raycaster.sortOrderPriority throws a NullReferenceException whenever a UI Toolkit target overlaps the hit. UiRaycastHelper.GetSortOrderPriority already handles a null module by returning 0. Apply the same fallback here.

Proposed fix
-            BaseRaycaster raycaster = uguiPointerData.pointerPressRaycast.module;
-            return MouseUiHitPriority.IsUguiInFront(raycaster.sortOrderPriority, toolkit.SortingOrder);
+            BaseRaycaster? raycaster = uguiPointerData.pointerPressRaycast.module;
+            int priority = raycaster != null ? raycaster.sortOrderPriority : 0;
+            return MouseUiHitPriority.IsUguiInFront(priority, toolkit.SortingOrder);

UI Toolkit passes handler exceptions on to whoever sent the event,
where uGUI's ExecuteEvents logs and swallows them, so a press handler
that threw left the button held. Click now releases in a finally, and
a long press presses inside the try whose finally releases. The
exception still ends the command.

Also pins that a fractional panel sorting order is rounded down when
compared with a Canvas: the existing cases passed with truncation or
rounding up as well.
