Summary

  • simulate-mouse-ui Drag and the split drag (DragStart / DragMove / DragEnd) now reach UI Toolkit controls at their annotated coordinates, so a Slider or Scroller follows the drag, with or without an EventSystem.
  • Drag responses report UiSystem and HitPath, as clicks already do.

User Impact

  • Before: a drag starting on a UI Toolkit control went through the uGUI EventSystem and its displaced panel bridge, so sliders did not move, and scenes without an EventSystem could not be dragged at all.
  • After: the control under the start point is pressed, moved, and released through its own panel. uGUI vs UI Toolkit is decided by the same rule as clicks (uGUI wins only when its Canvas sorts above the panel).
  • Unchanged: uGUI drags, bypass drags (still need an EventSystem and a GameObject path), and drop targets for uGUI.

Changes

  • A drag now runs through a drag session, uGUI or UI Toolkit; the split drag state holds the session. A behaviour-preserving refactor commit introduces it for uGUI first, pinned by a new test.
  • The drag start resolver picks uGUI or UI Toolkit like presses do. Without an EventSystem and without a UI Toolkit control under the point, the drag fails naming both.
  • --drop-target-path on a UI Toolkit drag is refused before anything is sent; on DragEnd the drag stays in progress so it can end without one.
  • A split drag whose document is disabled fails and ends at the next step; a destroyed one counts as ended, as a destroyed uGUI target does. A uGUI split drag whose EventSystem disappears fails and stays in progress, as before.
  • Handler exceptions: a press that throws when a UI Toolkit drag starts is released before the exception leaves, and no drag is kept; ending a split drag clears it even when the release throws; a move that throws keeps the drag (and the held button), as a cancelled DragMove does.
  • E2E (sh and ps1): one-shot drag of the demo slider edge to edge, and a split drag to the centre and back. The demo slider loses its label so its annotated bounds are the track.
  • Docs: a Drags section in references/ui-toolkit.md; the output reference covers drags for UiSystem/HitPath, what HitGameObjectName names for a non-control UI Toolkit hit, and when HitPath is null; the skill examples show the plain one-shot drag again. Generated skill copies regenerated.

Exits and the press/release pair

Exit uGUI UI Toolkit
one-shot drag completes released, drop sent released
one-shot drag cancelled / document disabled midway released released / nothing more sent, succeeds
DragStart press handler throws — released, no drag kept, exception propagates
DragMove cancelled or handler throws drag kept drag kept, button held
DragEnd succeeds released, cleared released, cleared
DragEnd release handler throws — cleared, exception propagates
DragEnd with --drop-target-path drop sent refused, drag kept
next step after the target goes away destroyed: counts as ended disabled: fails and clears; destroyed: counts as ended

…odule

Only the module builds these results; callers read them. An internal
constructor makes that a compiler rule rather than a convention.
… pointer input

simulate-mouse-ui needs to press UI Toolkit controls at the points
screenshot annotations report. Going through the uGUI bridge does not
work there: it flips Y with Screen.height, which outside the player
loop is the size of whichever Editor view was drawn last.

UIToolkitScreenElements.FindPointerTarget maps the point onto each
panel with the same function Unity applies to input, tries panels
front to back, and reports the outermost control around the picked
element, so the path matches the annotation even on a scrollbar's
arrow or a slider's input field. Elements outside every document,
such as an open dropdown's menu, get no path.

The returned target sends pointer down, move and up events to the
panel without a target, so Unity delivers them to the element
holding the pointer or under it, as with real input. Once the owning
document is disabled or destroyed, the target sends nothing and
throws nothing, because that can happen between resolving and
pressing and during cleanup.
…aviour unchanged)

Clicks and long presses are about to reach UI Toolkit controls as well
as uGUI ones. The executor now works with one IMouseUiPressTarget and
the hit report it captured before the first await, so a second kind
of target can slot in without new branches in the timeout, pause and
cleanup paths.

UguiPressTarget carries the existing uGUI dispatch unchanged: the
click events, the long-press pointer down, and the pointer up in the
finally, with the release decision still captured as a plain bool.
The response factory takes the hit report instead of a name and a
hit flag. The source guard test now checks the captured report and
the release bool in their new places.

The SimulateMouseUi assembly references the shared UI Toolkit module,
which the next change uses.
…rols

A click at a screenshot annotation's SimX/SimY on a UI Toolkit control
used to report "no UI element hit": the uGUI bridge to UI Toolkit flips
Y with Screen.height, which outside the player loop is the size of the
last Editor view drawn, so the press landed beside the control.

Clicks and long presses now look up the UI Toolkit control at the
requested point directly and send it pointer events, so the result
no longer depends on Screen. The uGUI side leaves out the bridge's
panel hits. Where both are under the point, the uGUI hit wins only
when its raycaster's sort priority is greater than the panel's sorting
order, the same order the EventSystem applies to real input; a uGUI
image without handlers in front still blocks the panel.

UI Toolkit presses work without an EventSystem. A click with neither
an EventSystem nor a UI Toolkit control under the point fails and
names both. Bypass presses and drags still need an EventSystem and
fail with the same message as before, and a bypass path containing
'#' that matches nothing explains that UI Toolkit paths are not
accepted there.

Responses add UiSystem (UGUI, empty for physics targets, UIToolkit)
and HitPath in the form annotations use, and UI Toolkit hits are
named as such in the message.
…ated points

The UI Toolkit annotation E2E now drives simulate-mouse-ui at the
coordinates the elements-only capture reports, in both the POSIX and
PowerShell scripts:

- a click on a button reports UIToolkit, its annotation path and name,
and a click on a scrollbar reports the scrollbar, not a part inside it
- a click on the covered part of a button reaches the panel in front,
and a click at the annotated point reaches the button
- a disabled button receives the press without reacting
- a long press clicks once on release
- the uGUI button still reacts and reports UGUI
- a click still works after the EventSystem is disabled

The existing simulate-mouse-input click stays as its own step. The
listener and EventSystem changes are made in PlayMode only and go away
when the script stops PlayMode.
…cument behind it

Disabling a document leaves its shared panel alive, so a press sent
anyway hits nothing and the test could not tell sending from not
sending. A second document behind it on the same panel now counts any
press that gets through.
…lkit

The simulate-mouse-ui skill now names UI Toolkit, drops the claim that
it cannot reach UI Toolkit entries, and explains in a new reference how
presses are delivered, how overlaps with uGUI are decided, that no
EventSystem is needed, and what is not supported. The output reference
documents UiSystem and HitPath. The simulate-mouse-input, screenshot
annotation, and package tool docs point to simulate-mouse-ui for UI
Toolkit controls. Generated skill copies and the tool catalog are
regenerated.
Drag state treats a destroyed target as no drag in progress through
Unity's null check on the stored GameObject. Nothing pinned that: a
DragMove then reports no drag, and a click or a new DragStart is not
refused as overlapping an active drag.
…nchanged)

Drag state stored the uGUI target and its PointerEventData, and the
executors drove both directly. A drag session now owns them: it moves
the pointer, says whether the drag can continue, and finishes it.
Interpolation runs in input coordinates and asks the session where the
pointer is; for uGUI that is derived from the stored screen position, so
the screen points a drag passes are the same as before.

A destroyed target still ends the drag on its own, which a test added
beforehand pins.
Drag, DragStart, DragMove and DragEnd starting on a UI Toolkit control
now press it, move, and release through its panel at the annotated
coordinates, choosing between uGUI and UI Toolkit by the same rule as
clicks. They work without an EventSystem; uGUI drags still need one,
and a split uGUI drag whose EventSystem goes away fails as before and
stays in progress.

A drop target is refused on UI Toolkit drags before anything is sent;
on DragEnd the drag stays in progress so it can end without one. A
split drag whose document is disabled fails and ends; one whose
document is destroyed counts as ended, as a destroyed uGUI target does.
Every exit releases the button, and drag responses now carry UiSystem
and HitPath.
UI Toolkit passes handler exceptions on to whoever sent the event,
where uGUI's ExecuteEvents logs and swallows them, so a press handler
that threw left the button held. Click now releases in a finally, and
a long press presses inside the try whose finally releases. The
exception still ends the command.

Also pins that a fractional panel sorting order is rounded down when
compared with a Canvas: the existing cases passed with truncation or
rounding up as well.
A press that throws when a UI Toolkit drag starts is released before
the exception leaves, and DragStart then keeps no drag in progress.
Ending a split drag clears it even when the release throws. A move
that throws leaves the drag in progress with the button held, as a
cancelled DragMove does, so DragEnd can still release it.
The UI Toolkit E2E, in both scripts, now drags the demo's volume
slider from its left edge to its right edge in one shot, then in
steps: to its centre and back to its left edge, checking the value
after each. The demo slider loses its label so its annotated bounds
are the track, and exposes its value for the scripts. The click
without an EventSystem stays the last step.
The UI Toolkit reference gains a Drags section: what moves, starting on
a slider's track, the drop target being uGUI-only, what happens when
the document goes away or a handler throws, and keeping the real mouse
away during split drags. The output reference says UiSystem and
HitPath now cover drags, what HitGameObjectName names when the picked
UI Toolkit element is not a control, and when HitPath is null. The
skill's examples show the plain one-shot drag again.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds UI Toolkit support for one-shot and split simulate-mouse-ui drags. It resolves UI Toolkit and uGUI drag targets, tracks drags through sessions, reports hit metadata, and handles unsupported drop targets, document loss, cancellation, and handler exceptions. Tests and tool documentation cover the new behavior.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b0090

The drag implementation is mergeable with bounded follow-up, but the contradictory skill guidance should be corrected and the test callback should be cleaned up reliably.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b0090

The new drag behavior follows the existing click targeting rules and preserves restrictions on bypass and drop targets. No security vulnerability was established. Recovery after a UI document disappears remains incompletely demonstrated, so the change warrants a low-risk assessment rather than an assurance of minimal risk.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A caller able to invoke simulate-mouse-ui can now drive drag-responsive UI Toolkit handlers in the connected Editor’s runtime panels, including movement beyond the starting control through capture or panel picking. Application-defined handler side effects are not bounded by these files; no tenant, credential, or external-service isolation guarantee was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Drag targeting preserves the click sorting rule, keeps explicit bypass resolution uGUI-only, and refuses UI Toolkit drop paths before uGUI drop-handler lookup. Registered tool requests acquire an execution lease that rejects overlap. These are targeting and execution controls, not proof of transport-level caller authorization.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Disabled-document validation clears the stored session without calling Finish, and pointer Release suppresses dispatch when the document is unavailable. The disabled-document test asserts logical drag clearing but not engine pressed-button state, capture recovery, or later interaction. Release suppression existed in the base; whether the newly extended lifetime worsens external pointer-state exposure remains unresolved rather than a verified finding.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate pointer-state recovery across document disable, destruction, panel replacement, and re-enable, including subsequent interactions on another document sharing the panel. Establish the engine’s cleanup guarantee before deciding whether an explicit ownership-aware reset is necessary.

For **Unity Test Framework 1.3.9**, I couldn’t verify the implementation details of `IEnumeratorTestWorkItem` from an accessible source, so I can’t confirm whether its coroutine enumerator is disposed when an assertion fails.

The closest version-specific source I found is the [1.3.9 package mirror/tag](https://github.com/needle-mirror/com.unity.test-framework/tree/1.3.9). Its release notes don’t mention coroutine disposal or assertion-failure cleanup. ([github.com](https://github.com/needle-mirror/com.unity.test-framework/releases?utm_source=openai))

To establish the behavior, inspect the 1.3.9 source for the work item’s failure/exception path and check whether it calls `Dispose()` on the `IEnumerator`—including on early termination. The 1.3.8 manual confirms the package’s general context, but doesn’t document this implementation detail. ([docs.unity.cn](https://docs.unity.cn/Packages/com.unity.test-framework%401.3/manual/index.html?utm_source=openai))

Unity coroutine IEnumerator finally exception Dispose StartCoroutine assertion failure finally executes

💡 Result:

**Not reliably.** A C# iterator’s `finally` runs when the iterator completes or an exception unwinds through it. But a Unity **assertion failure during `StartCoroutine` setup** is not necessarily an exception unwinding through the iterator—so don’t rely on it to run `finally`.

Unity’s reference source shows its coroutine bridge calling `IEnumerator.MoveNext()`, but doesn’t establish that Unity calls `Dispose()` when startup fails. The reference source is for the current `master` branch, not necessarily your Unity version. ([github.com](https://github.com/Unity-Technologies/UnityCsReference/blob/master/Runtime/Export/Scripting/Coroutines.cs?utm_source=openai))

If cleanup is important, do it explicitly around `StartCoroutine` in the caller (or use an idempotent cleanup method). The precise behavior for a specific assertion depends on the Unity version and where the failure occurs; share the assertion text and version for a narrower answer.

Clean up recordErrors in TearDown.

If either nested wait fails, execution does not reach line 458. The callback can remain subscribed and receive logs from later tests. Store the callback in a field and remove it at the start of TearDown.

An outer try/finally is valid C#, but it is not a reliable cleanup boundary here because the assertions occur in nested coroutines.

Store the log callback used by the drag test in a field and unsubscribe it at
the start of TearDown, clearing the field afterward. Update the test’s normal
cleanup to clear the field after unsubscribing as well, so callback cleanup is
safe whether nested waits complete or fail.

- `HitGameObjectName`: Name of the GameObject that received the pointer events (nullable string; null if nothing was hit). It is the event-handler target resolved up the hierarchy from the raycast hit (the first `IPointerDownHandler`, else the first `IPointerClickHandler`, for `Click`/`LongPress`; the first `IDragHandler` for drags), so it can be an ancestor of the topmost raycast hit — a Button's child Text reports the Button. With `--bypass-raycast` it is the handler resolved the same way from `--target-path` (also possibly an ancestor), not the raycast hit and not necessarily the raw path GameObject itself. For a UI Toolkit hit it is the name of the outermost control an annotation would list (the same as the annotation's `Name`); when the picked element is not inside such a control (a bare `Label` or `VisualElement`), it is that element's own `name`, or its type name when empty, and the element is not annotated. Unlike uGUI, which reports null when no handler is found, UI Toolkit reports the picked element whether or not it handles pointer events
- `UiSystem`: Which UI system received the press (nullable string; `Click`/`LongPress` and drags, null if nothing was hit): `UGUI` for a target under a Canvas, `UIToolkit` for a UI Toolkit control, and `""` for a non-UI target such as a physics object
- `HitPath`: Path of the hit target in the form `AnnotatedElements[].Path` uses (nullable string; `Click`/`LongPress` and drags): a hierarchy path for GameObjects, `Document/Path#element` for UI Toolkit controls. Null when nothing was hit, or when the hit element belongs to no document, such as the menu of an open dropdown

Update the stale “UI Toolkit Elements” section.

The source and both checked-in copies still say that only Click and LongPress reach UI Toolkit controls. The same skill documents UI Toolkit drag support. Update the source text and synchronize both copies.

Suggested fix

…n EventSystem

Two drags over a uGUI drag target laid on the slider pin the choice at
the drag start: the Canvas sorted above the panel gets the drag, the
panel sorted above the Canvas gets it. A bypass Drag and DragStart on an
existing uGUI drag target still fail without an EventSystem, now that
the use case no longer refuses all drags up front.
Inserting the drag overlap helper left the comment describing
CreateCanvasElement's offset above the new helper instead.
The UI Toolkit section of the output reference still named only
clicks and long presses.
