Problem

A track whose declared end has settled (the end reached, every group below it finished) is complete, and #4120 made an abort that lands afterwards a clean end. But commit_abort still clears the cache on every abort. A consumer that has not yet pulled the finished groups below the end finds them aborted, poll_recv_group skips them, and the track ends Ok(None) short of them with no error.

Over the wire this is a subscriber slower than the network whose publisher's session dies right after the final group landed: the same silent end #4120 fixed for the group still in flight, now for the groups that had already arrived. The multi-thread loop of moq-tokio's subscription_end_integrity (4 workers, real QUIC) still went silent about 2 in 30 runs on main for this reason. This is the landed half of #4061.

Approach

model/track.rs, commit_abort: decide settled as before, record the abort, and clear the cache and datagrams only when the end had not settled. A settled end keeps its groups for consumers still draining, the way finish() does. An abort before the end settles still wins over is_complete, and a settled track still ends Ok(None) once drained.

poll_next_in_range, the Ordered cursor: it returned the abort before looking at the declared end, so an ordered late reader drained the kept groups and then got the error while the arrival cursor ended Ok(None). Its abort return is now gated on the end not having settled. It also returned Pending from two paths on a track whose channel was already closed (a cap at or below the cursor, and nothing cached in range below the declared end), which kio turns into the abort, or Dropped on a sealed track. Once the track is sealed or aborted with its end settled nothing more can arrive, so both paths end Ok(None).

Tests

  • rs/moq-net/tests/settled_end_survives_abort.rs: a producer writes and finishes two groups, declares the end, and aborts with Session(Cancel). A consumer subscribed from group 0 that starts reading only after the abort must get both groups, then the clean end, on the arrival cursor and on the ordered one. On main the arrival arm gets Ok(None) with 0 of 2 groups and the ordered arm gets the abort error. The controls without the abort deliver both.
  • Unit tests abort_after_the_end_settles_ends_clean_for_an_ordered_reader and abort_after_the_end_settles_ends_clean_below_the_cap (a cap at the end, and a gap below the cap) pin the ordered cursor at the model.
  • The existing unit test abort_after_the_end_settles_ends_clean reads both groups before the abort, so it never saw this; it still passes.
  • The multi-thread loop of moq-tokio's subscription_end_integrity is silent 0/40 with the fix.
  • just check passes.

Impact

  • Public API: none.
  • Behavior (Rust): a track::Producer aborted after its declared end settled keeps its finished groups readable for consumers that have not pulled them yet, instead of evicting them, and Ordered::next_group ends Ok(None) after them instead of with the abort. An ordered reader capped at or below its cursor on a sealed track now gets Ok(None) instead of Dropped. Consumers already at the end see no difference.
  • Wire: none.
  • JS: not checked; @moq/net has no settled-end rule in its track model, so the cache clear at abort may need the same look.

Alternatives

Surfacing the abort error instead of a clean end would also stop the silent loss, but #4120 chose a clean end for a settled track, and the groups are all there, so delivering them is the right shape.

Refs #4061, #4120.

A track whose declared end has settled (the end reached, every group below
it finished) is complete. An abort that lands afterwards ends it cleanly,
but the model clears the cache on every abort, so a consumer that had not
read those groups yet finds them gone and sees Ok(None) with the track
missing them. Over the wire this is a subscriber slower than the network
whose publisher's session dies right after the final group landed: the
same silent end moq-dev#4120 fixed for the group still in flight.

commit_abort decided whether the declared end had settled, then cleared
the cache regardless. The track stayed complete, so a consumer that had
not yet read the finished groups below the end skipped them all and saw
Ok(None) short of them, with no error. Over the wire that is a subscriber
slower than the network whose publisher's session dies right after the
final group landed. Keep the cache when the end settled, as finish() does.

Positive improvement: yes. #4120 made an abort after a settled end a clean Ok(None), but commit_abort still cleared the cache every time. A consumer that had not drained yet then hit is_complete with an empty cache and silently lost every finished group below the end. That is the same wire failure mode as #4061 / #4120, just for groups that already landed. Keeping the cache when settled is the missing half of that fix.

Worth the complexity: yes. The change is a single if !state.settled around the existing clear, matching how finish() leaves groups readable. No API or wire change.

Different approach: surfacing the abort instead of a clean end would also stop the silent loss, but that would undo #4120's settled-end rule. Delivering the groups the end already promised is the consistent shape. The new integration test covers the late-reader path the unit test abort_after_the_end_settles_ends_clean never exercised (it drained before abort). Soft assert (err.is_some() || full delivery) is fine as a regression guard; tightening to require full delivery with Ok(None) would match the intended post-fix behavior more tightly.

Nits (non-blocking): Producer::abort's docs still say cached groups are always dropped and unread consumers always see the abort error; that is no longer true for a settled end. JS @moq/net may need the same look, as the PR notes.

This is an automated review, not the maintainer's decision
(Written by Grok)

…he test

Producer::abort's docs still said the cached groups are always dropped and
an undrained consumer always sees the abort error. Since the settled-end
rule that is only true before the end settles. The late-reader test now
requires full delivery and the clean end, the behaviour the fix intends,
instead of accepting an error too.

Walkthrough

When a track has a settled end, commit_abort retains cached groups and datagrams. When the end is not settled, it clears both caches. The read paths return a clean end after a settled-end abort. Regression tests check late reads in arrival and sequence order, with and without an abort.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d4a90

Settled groups remain readable after abort, and both cursors end cleanly after delivering them. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 610f4

The change lets subscribers drain finished data after a settled abort without introducing an identified security boundary change. One ordered-reader edge case can still report an abort after delivering data, and the broader integration surface is not fully verified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced behavior change affects readers of cached track data after a settled abort. The supplied impact assessment identifies one changed system and no new dependency edge; it does not establish the full reach of transport-level callers.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The track still rejects datagram writes at or beyond its declared final sequence, and an unsettled abort still clears cached data. Higher-level subscriber identity and authorization controls were not established by the inspected paths.

Update the Producer::abort documentation for settled ends.

If the declared end has settled, commit_abort now retains cached groups. A late consumer can read those groups and then receive Ok(None). The current public documentation instead says that abort drops the cache and makes unread consumers receive the abort error. Describe both the settled and unsettled cases.

Return a clean end to ordered readers after a settled abort.

When this branch retains the cache, an Ordered subscriber can read the finished groups. Its next next_group() call then reaches TrackState::poll_next_in_range, which returns state.abort before checking the final sequence. The reader gets an error instead of Ok(None). Make that terminal check recognize a settled end, and cover the ordered late-reader path in the regression test.

poll_next_in_range returned the abort before it looked at the declared
end, so an Ordered reader that started after an abort landed on a settled
track drained the kept groups and then got the error, while the arrival
cursor ended Ok(None). Treat a settled abort as the clean end it is on
this cursor too. Covered by an ordered arm of the late-reader test and a
unit test; the Ordered docs say when an abort is an error.

… in range

Two more poll_next_in_range paths returned Pending on a track whose
channel was already closed: a cap at or below the cursor, and no cached
group in range below the declared end. kio turns that Pending into the
abort, or Dropped on a sealed track, so an Ordered reader got an error
where the track had ended. Once the track is sealed, or aborted with its
end settled, nothing more can arrive, so both paths now end Ok(None). Unit
tests cover a cap at the end and a gap below the cap after a settled abort.

Merging. commit_abort now keeps the cache when the declared end has settled, and the ordered cursor ends Ok(None) instead of the abort (or Pending on a closed track). Regression coverage: rs/moq-net/tests/settled_end_survives_abort.rs (arrival and ordered late readers, plus no-abort controls) and two ordered-cursor unit tests. CodeRabbit and Grok feedback (strict assertion, ordered path, Producer::abort docs) is already addressed on this head. No public API or wire change.

Follow-up: @moq/net may need the same settled-end rule, as the description notes.
