quest(m1): plan rendition failure isolation and record an empty-group largest - #5386
Conversation
… largest Add quest/m1/rendition-failure.md: when one @moq/publish rendition's encoder fails, only that rendition ends, loudly, while the others and the broadcast keep running. Follows the Codex P1 declined on #5068. Record in quest/m1/largest.md that a started group with no frames leaves largest() at the previous real frame. No actionable bugs found in the three-file planning diff. The failure description matches the current broadcast and encoder lifetimes, and the empty-group rule is consistent with keeping frame locations separate from sequence allocation. This PR changes no runtime behavior, public API, wire format, or build configuration.
The direction is sound: isolate failure immediately and settle recovery separately instead of adding a reactive broadcast-wide restart loop. Leaving the failed rendition disabled until explicit re-arming is the simplest baseline. When choosing same-name recovery, preserve the existing catalog track-identity contract as well as sequence continuity; a changed codec/configuration identity still needs a new name or epoch.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the full patch, surrounding publisher/selection code, related quests, and #5068 discussion. No tests, builds, quest tooling, or media playback were run.

Include native consumers that retain disabled renditions
If the recommended enabled: false option is selected with the proposed JS-only scope, several native egresses will still select the failed track: WHEP uses catalog.audio.ranked() and catalog.video.ranked() without filtering in rs/moq-rtc/src/egress.rs:227-247, while HLS iterates every catalog rendition in rs/moq-hls/src/export/renditions.rs:446-478. ranked() merely sorts disabled entries last, so a lone or all-disabled rendition remains selectable. The quest therefore needs to include these consumers and regression tests, or recommend removing the failed entry, to satisfy its goal that viewers stop selecting it.

Partly agree. The claim that native consumers already skip a disabled rendition was wrong, and is corrected in the latest push: WHEP's ranked() pick and HLS's rendition list still serve a disabled rendition. The maintainer has since scoped this quest to JS @moq/publish with enabled: false, and that gap already affects any disabled rendition (manual disable, rung disable), so it belongs in its own consumer-side follow-up rather than here. Flagged for the maintainer.

No new actionable bugs found in the changes since my previous review. The settled recovery direction is safer and simpler: failure stays local, while explicitly re-arming a replacement uses a new track name or epoch rather than carrying sequence state into a fresh encoder.
I verified the native-consumer gap raised in the existing finding: WHEP's ranked selection can still choose a disabled rendition, and HLS retains them. The updated quest now accurately records that limitation and narrows its goal to publisher-side disabling; this does not fix those consumers. No duplicate finding added.
Quest-only changes: no runtime/API/wire/build impact. GitHub-only static review of the delta, full current planning diff, and relevant consumer code; no tests, builds, quest tooling, or playback run.

Problem
#5068 declined a Codex P1: when one
@moq/publishrendition's encoder fails mid-stream, its catalog entry stays advertised, nothing reacts until the rendition set changes, and then the whole network broadcast is republished under a new epoch, taking every healthy rendition with it. A dead audio encoder repeats that on every later rendition change.Separately, the maintainer settled how
largest()treats a group that has started but has no frames yet, which Live largest location did not record.Approach
quest/m1/rendition-failure.md[M]: a failed rendition ends loudly on its own while the others, the catalog, and the broadcast keep running under the same epoch. It records the current behaviour and the maintainer's decisions below. Placed in m1 beside the other rendition quests, ranked just above Rendition preference.quest/m1/largest.md: a Plan bullet recording the decision, a matching test case, and the Goal no longer says groups alone advancelargest().Decisions
