Problem

A panic in binding-owned background work can lose the final C callback or appear as cancellation after its channels drop, so a C host waits forever or a UniFFI caller sees Cancel instead of the panic.

Approach

Retain each operation's completion, publish driver panic before model teardown, and report the existing MOQ_ERROR_PANIC or MoqError::Task with a clear panic reason. Independent objects keep working. Sessions, published broadcasts, routed consumers, dynamic producers and container importers retain completion when they keep the origin driver alive after its original handle is released. Every reader derived from a routed broadcast (track, group, fetched group, JSON, media, and audio/video decoders, including moq-c's catalog renditions) carries and is supervised by that driver.

Return the accepted session and its driver from moq_tokio::server::Request::ok, as the quest's maintainer decision asked, so bindings supervise the actual driver. A panicked accept loop closes its listeners before unwinding. Supervise C consume/publish/origin/audio/video/server tasks, UniFFI background and cleanup work, accepted drivers, and the native codec follower. Cancellation stays nonblocking when a foreign future stops polling while holding its state; completed cleanup failures remain available to later fallible calls.

The UniFFI container constructors reuse #5559's reserve_container, which now also returns the broadcast's driver: the reservation, broadcast and driver are taken under the owner lock and the importer is built after it is released.

Impact

  • Public API: moq_tokio::server::Request::ok now returns Result<(Session, JoinHandle<moq_tokio::Result<()>>)>; Rust callers retain and await the driver before classifying closure (noted in doc/setup/upgrade.md).
  • Host operations report existing panic errors without adding a UniFFI error variant or changing the C ABI. Browser WebAssembly retains panic-abort behavior with the current toolchain. Standalone process-wide origin supervision is unchanged.
  • Wire: no changes.

Validation

  • Red/green deterministic regressions cover final callback delivery and independent healthy work, panic publication before teardown wakes a foreign thread, accept-loop socket release, cleanup panic, nonblocking queued cancellation, driver teardown panic, and surviving origin-derived broadcast/container handles. The container regression now builds one importer on a shared timebase and one without, so both reservation paths carry the driver. Routed-broadcast readers and moq-c decode renditions have their own regressions that fail without the fix.
  • Merged main (including the new moq-gst test relay caller of Request::ok). Full local just check modules and just test interop --all pass; Dart regenerates with no diff; the Tokio test-util dev dependency is declared once. moq-uring is excluded locally only because this host's shared memlock limit is exhausted; CI covers it.

Follow-ups

  • The broader task-supervision quest (quest/m2/task-supervision.md) remains separate.

Completed quest/m1/ffi-panic-supervision.md in b2bd75c. Binding-owned background panics now reach final C callbacks and UniFFI's existing Task error, including through surviving origin-derived handles. Accepted sessions expose their actual driver; listener panics release all sockets before propagation. The quest and incoming references are reconciled.

All 4,034 selected native tests pass, including the 301 C/FFI tests and quiet serial 82-test io_uring run. Capture/play/minimal-video/VPX suites, wasm/native feature checks, dependency contracts, Rust docs/lints, wrapper checks, C++/OBS, shell/docs/Nix/workflows and all-language interop pass. Swift and missing non-host Go libraries are platform skips. Request::ok's ownership pair is the breaking Rust API; no UniFFI enum variant, C ABI or wire fields changed. Current wasm panic-abort behavior remains explicit.

Recommended follow-up: combine the published server changes and shared media constructors with #5559/#5560, regenerate bindings once for the combined API, and preserve the identical Tokio test-util dependency once. Broader process/task supervision remains in its existing quest.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds owned background-task supervision across Tokio, moq-ffi, and moq-c. Dependent operations and callbacks can report task panics, while unrelated objects continue running. Accepted-session setup returns a session with its driver task, and server and relay paths retain or await that task. Tests and language documentation cover the updated error behavior.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f40a3

Two problems should be fixed before merging. A rate-follower panic in the FFI video producer can leave a track unfinished, so subscribers see an unexpected drop instead of a clean or aborted end. Separately, a WebSocket-feature test target may no longer compile because the Request::ok return type changed.

A track, group, JSON, media or decoder reader taken from an origin-backed
broadcast dropped the origin's driver, so an origin panic reached its
pending read as `dropped` or a cancellation instead of the task error.
Hand the driver to every derived reader and supervise its reads, and carry
it through moq-c's rendition lookup into the audio and video decode tasks.

Fold the bindings' panic note into each page's Runtime paragraph rather
than a section after Reference.

Remove the obsolete second driver spawn. Request::ok() now returns a Tokio JoinHandle, but this test passes that handle to moq_net::time::run, which requires a Driver. The WebSocket-feature test target cannot compile. The driver is already spawned by Request::ok(); retain its handle without calling moq_net::time::run again. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

finish() returned the follower's panic after taking the producer, so the

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: 8dd274d.

Direction: retaining completion with the objects that keep a driver alive is justified, as is returning the accepted session's driver. The previously reported routed-reader/decoder gaps are fixed (#5562 (comment) and #5562 (comment)).

Remaining findings:

  • P2: The cancellation deadlock identified in my earlier read-only assessment remains: rs/moq-ffi/src/ffi.rs:594–595 notifies while holding the cleanup mutex. Inline repoll reaches the same mutex at line 525. Details inline.
  • P2: Catalog-backed single-track importers still lose origin supervision: rs/moq-c/src/publish.rs:229–255,275–322 and rs/moq-ffi/src/media.rs:746–754,762–805. Their retained rendition owns the catalog, whose Timelines owns the broadcast/origin keepalive. Unlike the new container wrappers, these handles retain no Background. After an origin panic, a surviving importer's media_cut with no open group still returns success instead of the panic. Carry/check Background in these handles too; extend the panicking-origin regression to a single-track importer after releasing its original owners.
  • The independently reported follower-panic finalization issue also merits fixing: #5562 (comment). Preserve finalization or explicitly abort when reporting the follower error; avoid dropping the taken producer unfinished.

Verification: static source review, including the substantive reader fixes and current base-relative changes; no tests run independently. The head's Test job failed during Nix dependency retrieval (HTTP 416), before testing: https://github.com/moq-dev/moq/actions/runs/38846312038/job/116797524221. This does not establish a test-code failure or a passing suite.

[P2] Publish cancellation outside the cleanup mutex

send_replace(true) wakes pending Task::run calls while cleanup is locked. With an inline foreign polling executor, the awakened call immediately observes cancellation and reaches the cleanup check at line 525, which tries to take this same non-reentrant mutex. It cannot return to send_replace, so both the pending call and cancellation hang. The runtime-shutdown path at lines 117–118 already explicitly avoids this inline-waker pattern, and C++ exposes a replaceable future-poll executor. Move the notification/already-cancelled check before acquiring cleanup (the previous flag elects one cleanup owner), and add an immediate-repoll waker regression; the queued-cancel test only repolls after cancellation returns.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: f40a3a7, compared with my review of 8dd274d, excluding the separately merged base changes from #5616.

Fixed: the follower-error early return reported at #5562 (comment). UniFFI now retains stop()'s result while finishing the producer (rs/moq-ffi/src/video.rs:414–424); C finalizes before checking the follower (rs/moq-c/src/video.rs:427–431). This is the right direction: drain valid output, then report the adaptation failure. The new regressions cover panic reporting plus clean EOF; they do not exercise buffered frames or a panic poisoning the encoder mutex.

Still open, unchanged: the inline-repoll cancellation deadlock (#5562 (comment)) and missing origin supervision on catalog-backed single-track importers described in #5562 (review). These are prior findings, not new ones.

No additional actionable bug found in this update. Static source/test review only; I did not run tests. Head CI was still in progress when checked, so this is not a passing-test claim.

Took over the stalled merge. Changes since c3b5848:

  • Codex P1s (derived readers, decoder tasks, docs placement): fixed in dfd4166. Track, group, fetched group, JSON, media, and audio/video decoder readers taken from a routed broadcast now carry the origin driver and are supervised by it. moq-c's audio_rendition/video_rendition return a Rendition with the driver, and both decode tasks run under driver.watch. The binding docs fold the panic note into each page's Runtime paragraph. Regression tests (readers_derived_from_a_routed_broadcast_report_the_origin_panic, a_decoded_rendition_watches_the_origin_that_named_it) fail without the fix. I changed the moq-c one to use check(), so a missing driver fails the test instead of hanging it.
  • Codex P2 (video finish after follower panic): finish in both moq-ffi and moq-c now drains and finishes the track before it reports the follower panic. Before, it returned early and dropped the producer unfinished. Decision: when the follower panics, the track still ends cleanly rather than aborting, because the follower only adapts the rate and the frames are intact. The host still gets the task/panic error. Covered by finish_ends_the_track_after_a_rate_follower_panic in each crate.
  • Merged main twice. Updated the new moq-gst test relay to the Request::ok tuple return.
  • Local runs: clippy, fmt, and lint pass; the Rust tests pass for every affected crate (moq-uring is excluded locally only because of this host's memlock limit); just test interop --all passes. The final head f40a3a7 has a clean Codex review.

Unrelated flake seen once in 4 local runs: moq-gst source::imp::session_tests::a_refused_redial_posts_a_bus_error_after_playback fails with AddrInUse. It rebinds the relay port right after aborting the relay task (from #5613); this PR doesn't change that.

Finalize the track when the follower poisons inner.

If follow_reservation panics while it holds inner, the mutex becomes poisoned. Line 409 then returns a task error before finish takes the producer or ends its track. The test only sets failed, so it does not cover this path. Recover the producer from the poisoned mutex and finish it, or abort its track with the panic cause.

As per coding guidelines, “A track, group, or frame consumer seeing Error::Dropped is a bug too: its producer went away unfinished without calling abort with a specific error.”
