refactor!: consolidate transport configuration and session ownership - #6529
moq-tokio and moq-quic configuration now has one meaning for an unset value (None takes the runtime default; zero turns a knob off), one human-readable duration field per setting with no hidden __cli_* shadows, explicit keylog paths, an internally supervised accepted Session, and no leftover QUIC features.
Changes
Durations: every optional duration in connect, listen, quic, GOAWAY, WebSocket, and the relay (drain_timeout, ACME timeout, stats interval/linger, cache duration) is one Option<moq_tokio::cli::Duration> field. A later Rust assignment replaces a parsed CLI value instead of losing to a shadow field. The relay's private duration module and the dead __cli_ overlay cleanup are gone. websocket::Options.timeout reads None as the 10s default like listen.timeout, so the relay's WebSocket adapter passes its disabled listener timeout as zero.
Backoff:initial is only the first retry delay (zero retries at once), max is only the cap (zero leaves it uncapped; a cap below initial caps the first delay too), and a multiplier of 0 or 1 keeps the delay constant. Healthy-session classification is the new backoff.healthy (--connect-backoff-healthy, MOQ_CONNECT_BACKOFF_HEALTHY, 1s default, zero refused with Error::BackoffHealthy), so an immediate close or drain stays a failed attempt whatever the wait. The redirect-loop window still runs to the cap, or to healthy when uncapped.
Keylog:quic.keylog is a path. Native QUIC and relay io_uring share tls::KeyLog::open(path): new Unix files are 0600, an existing group/other-accessible file is refused untouched, and an open failure stops initialization. Foreign boolean opt-ins (C, UniFFI, GStreamer) still read SSLKEYLOGFILE at their adapter boundary. Enabled Iroh refuses an explicit keylog path and an explicit zero keep_alive, which pinned Iroh 1.4.1 cannot honor.
Sessions:server::Request::ok() returns a Session; the driver is supervised internally and publishes a panic through Session::closed() before unwinding.
TLS: an external resolver is tls::Serve::resolver(resolver, &tls::Listen), keeping root/peers client auth and refusing competing certificate sources.
Cleanup: the duplicate connect.once/--connect-once (use Client::with_reconnect), quic::Connection wrapper, worker::Config::with_pin, and extra QUIC-LB paths (now only [listen.lb]) are removed; lease scheduling and test hooks are private (_manual, _sim); moq-quic keeps only ring, aws-lc-rs, rustls-aws-lc-rs, qlog, mux, and fuzz.
Merge: merged current main, adapting its new stats.interval, cluster drain test, interop clients, env-isolated config tests, and reasoned lint attributes to this branch's shapes. moq-c boxes its dialed connection, since the accepted session variant no longer carries a driver handle and clippy flagged the size gap. Later merges add this branch's MIGRATE entries beside main's binding changes, adapt its tests to qmux binding framing at session establishment (moq-dev/moq#6528) and to moq_net::time::Instant::now (moq-dev/moq#6510), and unblocks JS reload takes the Rust backoff config, which listed this quest as its blocker. The latest merge drops this branch's MIGRATE.md hunks (moq-dev/moq#6610) for "How to migrate" below, takes main's shared cli::Duration (moq-dev/moq#6489) without its shadow fields, adapts main's binding state callbacks and wasm dial path (moq-dev/moq#6487) and new epochs test to the driverless Request::ok() and with_reconnect(false), keeps the relay's ACME resolver on tls::Serve::resolver under main's new acme feature gate (moq-dev/moq#6535), and removes the moq-quic feature trim from quic-api trim, where moq-dev/moq#6583 had moved it, since this PR lands it. The merge after moq-dev/moq#6522 renames this branch's new flag to --connect-backoff-healthy / MOQ_CONNECT_BACKOFF_HEALTHY (TOML stays [connect.backoff] healthy, like the other backoff keys), adds hidden refusals beside 6522's on the typed backoff and GOAWAY fields, moves keylog and duration adaptation into 6522's shared GStreamer connection properties, keeps moq-dev/moq#6436's graceful close of an accepted moq-c session without the driver handle, and drops the driver argument from moq-ffi's new in-memory shutdown pair. The connect, listen, and backoff timeout docs drop their rustdoc links, since those fields now carry the CLI help and 6522's flag_help_uses_plain_names refuses links there. On d09917f: just check passed every module but the host-only flake image, just rs test-changed (the whole workspace, 10,710 tests) and just test interop --all passed. The queue dropped d09917f for a main conflict; the next merges keep main's moq-net-enforced handshake deadline (moq-dev/moq#6520) and Request::requests() beside this branch's driverless Request::ok(), keep this branch's derived connect/listen/relay Defaults (main's new implementation fields default to None), record a driver panic through main's Closing cause (moq-dev/moq#6498), and keep the one stats.interval field with moq-dev/moq#6655's rule that an unset interval keeps the producer's default.
Decisions
✅ Backoff zero-off: define the retry wait, healthy-session classification, and the cap as separate knobs, keeping anti-flap classification; cover immediate-close and GOAWAY loops with mocked-time tests. (Alternative: keep the 50ms floor and initial as the healthy bar.)
✅ Zero max means uncapped rather than "no waiting", matching "zero is off" for a cap. (Recommended; picked unattended.)
✅ Zero healthy is refused rather than meaning "every session is healthy", since that would disable anti-flap. (Recommended; picked unattended.)
✅ healthy defaults to 1s independently of initial; the migration notes tell users who raised initial to set healthy too. (Recommended; picked unattended.)
✅ healthy is native-only: C, UniFFI, and the wrappers keep their current records. (Recommended; picked unattended: no foreign consumer yet.)
✅ Iroh keylog: accept the capability loss. Enabled Iroh refuses an explicit keylog path and an explicit zero keep_alive; default Iroh and native/io_uring logging stay supported. Documented in the relay config doc and MIGRATE. (Alternative: wait for an upstream explicit-path hook.)
✅ Resolver API: keep tls::Serve::resolver(resolver, &Listen). (Alternative: a one-argument constructor, which loses mTLS.)
✅ KeyLog: keep the shared tls::KeyLog::open(path), new Unix files 0600, explicit refusal of an existing looser file; MIGRATE entries cover it.
✅ The one-off driver-CPU CSV and report under rs/moq-net/benches/transport-config are dropped: they measured an existing benchmark, showed no effect distinguishable from noise (before/after median -4.09%, A/A median +3.21%), and had no consumer once the quest closed. (Picked unattended.)
Public API and wire impact
Breaking (MIGRATE.md is written at the release cut, so how to migrate is below):
moq-tokio:Option<cli::Duration> duration fields; Backoff gains healthy, initial()/max() report the configured or default value without floors, zero initial/max change meaning; Error::BackoffHealthy; quic.keylog: Option<PathBuf> and tls::KeyLog::open; tls::Serve::resolver; Request::ok() -> Session; connect::Config.once and quic::Connection removed; connect.quic/listen.quic private; [listen.lb] only.
moq-quic: features consolidated; no-default builds default to BloomTokenLog.
moq-relay: duration fields use the shared adapter (including stats.interval), [connect.backoff] healthy, keylog path, [listen.lb].
moq-auth, kio, moq-uring: test-only hooks private or underscored.
Foreign (C ABI, UniFFI records, GStreamer properties): unchanged shape. Docs now say zero initial/max means no wait/uncapped; the stricter keylog file check is below.
Wire: none.
How to migrate
moq-tokio, durations: set connect race, resolution_delay, timeout; listen timeout; QUIC idle_timeout, keep_alive; backoff initial, max, timeout; GOAWAY handover; and WebSocket delay with Some(std_duration.into()), or parse a moq_tokio::cli::Duration from "500ms". None uses the runtime default, including Default::default(). TOML keys are unchanged. A later typed assignment replaces a parsed CLI value; there are no hidden shadow fields. websocket::Options.timeout = None is the 10s handshake default; use Some(Duration::ZERO) to wait forever. Backoff::initial(), max(), and timeout() report the configured or default values. connect::Config.quic and listen::Config.quic are private; pass shared tuning through Config::init's quic argument or server::Config.quic. This supersedes main's unreleased "Config durations are optional" entry.
moq-tokio, backoff:initial is only the first retry delay (zero retries at once, no 50ms floor); max is only the cap (zero is uncapped; a cap below initial caps the first delay too); a multiplier of 0 or 1 keeps the delay constant. The healthy-session bar is the new backoff.healthy (--connect-backoff-healthy, MOQ_CONNECT_BACKOFF_HEALTHY, [connect.backoff] healthy, default 1s, zero refused with Error::BackoffHealthy); it used to follow initial. If you raised initial to slow redials after flapping sessions, set healthy to the same value.
moq-tokio, reconnect: use client.with_reconnect(false) for a one-shot native dial. connect.once, --connect-once, and MOQ_CONNECT_ONCE are removed; released --client-reconnect, MOQ_CLIENT_RECONNECT, and TOML reconnect are refused with that guidance. CLI dials always reconnect. Foreign bindings keep their once setting.
moq-tokio, keylog:SSLKEYLOGFILE alone no longer writes secrets. Set quic.keylog = Some(path) or --quic-keylog /private/keys.log (MOQ_QUIC_KEYLOG, [quic] keylog = "/private/keys.log"). New Unix files are mode 0600; an existing group/other-accessible file (such as 0644) is refused untouched. tls::KeyLog::open(path) gives custom rustls configs the same logger. Enabled Iroh refuses an explicit keylog path and an explicit zero keep_alive; omit them or use a positive interval.
moq-tokio, sessions:server::Request::ok() returns a Session; read session.closed() for the terminal cause, including a driver panic. There is no driver handle to await. This supersedes main's unreleased "Accepted sessions return their driver task (fix(ffi)!: supervise binding-owned background task panics #5562)" entry.
moq-tokio, TLS resolver: replace listen.tls.resolver = Some(resolver) with tls::Serve::resolver(resolver, &listen.tls)?, pass it as server::Config.tls, and clear server.listen.tls. It keeps root/peers verification and refuses cert, key, generate, or identity.
moq-tokio, QUIC-LB: move listen.lb_id / listen.lb_nonce or listen.load_balancer into [listen.lb] with id and optional nonce (default 8); in Rust set config.lb.id / config.lb.nonce. quic::LoadBalancer and Config::load_balancer() are private. --listen-quic-lb-* flags keep their names. A nonce without an ID is refused.
moq-tokio, misc:worker::Config::with_pin is removed; set workers.pin = true. quic::Connection is removed; Request::quic() returns quic::driver::Connection.
moq-relay: in [connect.backoff], initial, max, and the new healthy behave as above. Replace SSLKEYLOGFILE plus boolean [quic] keylog with keylog = "/private/keys.log" (or the flag/env above); Tokio and io_uring share the logger. Move QUIC-LB settings into [listen.lb]. Embedders set drain_timeout with Some(std_duration.into()) (None is the default); ACME timeout, stats interval/linger, and cache duration use the same moq_tokio::cli::Duration. The released --client-reconnect=false has no CLI replacement; native callers use Client::with_reconnect(false).
moq-cli: pass --quic-keylog /private/keys.log to capture secrets. --connect-once is removed. --connect-backoff-initial 0 retries at once, --connect-backoff-max 0 is uncapped, and --connect-backoff-healthy (1s) is the healthy bar.
moq-quic: use ring instead of rustls-ring or rustls; aws-lc-rs and rustls-aws-lc-rs select AWS-LC, and both providers re-export rustls. Remove tracing-log, bloom, platform-verifier, rustls-log, aws-lc-rs-fips, and rustls-aws-lc-rs-fips. Build a custom rustls client config instead of ClientConfig::try_with_platform_verifier. BloomTokenLog is always available and the default sends two validation tokens, including default-features = false builds that used NoneTokenLog and sent zero; keep that with validation_token.log(Arc::new(NoneTokenLog)).sent(0).
moq-auth:lease::Due and Producer::{due, failed} are private; drive authorization through Client. The tokio feature is removed; enable client or serve (Key::from_file_async stays available with either).
kio, moq-uring: the test-only sim and manual features are _sim and _manual; production consumers remove them.
Bindings (moq-c, moq-ffi, moq-gst, C++, OBS, Python, Go, Kotlin, Swift, Dart): the boolean keylog opt-in is unchanged, but SSLKEYLOGFILE is captured when configuration is adapted, new Unix logs are mode 0600, and an existing group/other-accessible file is refused without changing it. Make an existing log private before enabling key logging.
Validation
just check: JS, Rust lint, bench, quest, drill, Python, Kotlin, Go, Dart, C++, and OBS passed. Swift was skipped (no toolchain on this host), and the flake's github-runner image build fails here on unshare: write failed /proc/self/uid_map, a host limitation also hit on moq-dev/moq#6256.
just test interop --all: all checks passed (8 protocol preflight tests and every harness case).
After merging current main: just check passed every module except the known host-only failures above (github-runner image) and one run of the Go TestReservationUpdateReleasesSubscribedTrack flake, already tracked by quest/m1/test-flakes-2/go-reservation-grant.md, which passed 30/30 in isolation and on the rerun. just rs test over every touched crate (6388 tests) and moq-relay/moq-uring with io-uring (542) passed; just test interop --all passed. Local just check only lints Rust, and PR CI skips tests, so this run caught two reconnect integration tests that still used initial as the healthy bar; they now set healthy.
On 9ecc76e (main merged through moq-dev/moq#6527): just check passed every module but the host-only flake image; just rs test-changed (10,652 tests) and just test interop --all passed; moq-relay clippy without acme and the wasm32 clippy lane passed. Dart's leak_test.dart: a non-null optional argument is released RSS check failed intermittently here and equally on main without this branch (2 of 4 runs on d1c6eef), so it is a pre-existing flake.
New mocked-time tests drive the real reconnect loop over in-memory sessions on a paused clock: an immediate-close loop escalates 100ms→400ms and gives up at exactly the timeout; an empty-URI restart loop escalates without ever giving up; an A↔B immediate redirect loop escalates across both peers and gives up at the timeout; a zero initial redials at once. Each passed 30 consecutive runs. The test-only Client::dialer hook (#[cfg(test)]) is what lets them avoid loopback sockets, whose readiness let the paused clock jump and made session tenure nondeterministic.
On d4a6921's first parent: just check passed js, py, markdown, and gh (plus test js, test py, test gh) before the host-only flake image failed and cancelled the other lanes; run by hand, rs lint-changed --all, kt check, go check, cpp check, obs compile, and rs test-changed --all (10,262 tests) passed, and just test interop --all passed. After main's last two commits: workspace clippy, the moq-relay and moq-stats tests (495), and quest check pass.
Follow-ups
JS ReloadDelay in js/net still uses initial as the healthy bar; quest/m1/js-reload-config.md mirrors the split, and this PR removes its Required link.
Preserve the unresolved pacing and TLS policy choices on the quest draft, with validated consumers and measured driver panic supervision.
Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 <codex@openai.com>
Zero now turns each pacing knob off: `initial` 0 retries at once, `max` 0
leaves the delay uncapped, and a multiplier of 0 or 1 keeps it constant.
The healthy-session bar that classifies flapping sessions is its own
`healthy` knob (1s default, zero refused), so anti-flap classification
survives a zero wait. Mocked-time tests drive immediate-close, restart, and
redirect loops over in-memory sessions.
Also: stats.interval uses the shared duration adapter, the dead __cli_
overlay cleanup and one-off benchmark results are removed, and MIGRATE
entries cover the backoff, keylog, and --connect-once changes.

This pull request updates transport configuration and reconnect behavior. It replaces boolean QUIC key logging with explicit paths and adds secure file handling. It changes accepted-session APIs to return sessions without driver handles. It revises backoff defaults, healthy-session tracking, and duration parsing. It updates QUIC feature names, TLS resolver construction, load-balancer configuration, and related tests, documentation, and integrations.

The failing CodeQL check is alert #59 (rust/cleartext-logging), which is already open on main at rs/moq-tokio/src/server.rs:1406; this branch only shifts it to line 1405. The flagged line is self.tasks.swap_remove(index) in the stream accept loop, which logs nothing, so I'm leaving it out of this PR rather than working around a pre-existing finding.
Coordination with moq-dev/moq#6522: that PR renames --backoff-* / MOQ_BACKOFF_* to --connect-backoff-* / MOQ_CONNECT_BACKOFF_*, and this PR adds --backoff-healthy / MOQ_BACKOFF_HEALTHY. Whichever merges second renames the new flag to --connect-backoff-healthy / MOQ_CONNECT_BACKOFF_HEALTHY, including its doc and MIGRATE.md mentions. It is unreleased, so it needs no old-spelling refusal.
The listener stores a disabled timeout as None, which websocket::Options now reads as the ten-second default. Pass zero instead.

These tests sized their 100ms sessions against initial as the healthy bar. With healthy split out and defaulting to 1s, every hop scored as a failure and the 60ms retry window ended the connection.

Adapt to main's connect- flag prefix (renaming --backoff-healthy to

The merged duration fields now carry the CLI help that main's plain
shadow-field docs used to, so main's flag_help_uses_plain_names test
needs plain text there.

Fix the stale doc: bind now refuses a keylog path.
The doc for Config::bind says the endpoint honors the transport knobs "and key logging". The new check at Lines 270-274 returns NoBackend for any quic.keylog path. The doc misleads users who set --quic-keylog on an Iroh endpoint.

Set the healthy-session threshold explicitly.
backoff.initial controls retry delay, not the healthy-session threshold. The threshold defaults to 1 second, so the 120 ms wait can take the test through the short-session redirect path instead of the healthy-session handover path.

Preserve the released connect-once input as deprecated.
The 0.14 -> 0.15 migration guide maps --client-reconnect=false and TOML reconnect to --connect-once and once. Removing once makes existing configurations lose one-shot behavior and reconnect instead.
Keep the hidden field and report it from deprecated() with Client::with_reconnect(bool) as the replacement.

Review comment at @rs/moq-tokio/src/connect.rs around lines 624 - 627:
Preserve the deprecated `connect-once` input so existing configurations retain
one-shot behavior; add the hidden `once` field to the relevant legacy
configuration and update `deprecated()` to report it with
`Client::with_reconnect(bool)` as the replacement.

Keeps main's moq-net-enforced handshake deadline, Request::requests, and recorded close cause (#6498) with this branch's driverless Request::ok and derived config defaults; a driver panic now records its cause through Closing.

Keeps this branch's single stats interval field; per #6655, an unset interval keeps the producer's default.

moq-tokio and moq-quic configuration now has one meaning for an unset value (
Nonetakes the runtime default; zero turns a knob off), one human-readable duration field per setting with no hidden__cli_*shadows, explicit keylog paths, an internally supervised acceptedSession, and no leftover QUIC features.Changes
connect, listen, quic, GOAWAY, WebSocket, and the relay (drain_timeout, ACMEtimeout, statsinterval/linger, cacheduration) is oneOption<moq_tokio::cli::Duration>field. A later Rust assignment replaces a parsed CLI value instead of losing to a shadow field. The relay's private duration module and the dead__cli_overlay cleanup are gone.websocket::Options.timeoutreadsNoneas the 10s default likelisten.timeout, so the relay's WebSocket adapter passes its disabled listener timeout as zero.initialis only the first retry delay (zero retries at once),maxis only the cap (zero leaves it uncapped; a cap belowinitialcaps the first delay too), and a multiplier of 0 or 1 keeps the delay constant. Healthy-session classification is the newbackoff.healthy(--connect-backoff-healthy,MOQ_CONNECT_BACKOFF_HEALTHY, 1s default, zero refused withError::BackoffHealthy), so an immediate close or drain stays a failed attempt whatever the wait. The redirect-loop window still runs to the cap, or tohealthywhen uncapped.quic.keylogis a path. Native QUIC and relay io_uring sharetls::KeyLog::open(path): new Unix files are 0600, an existing group/other-accessible file is refused untouched, and an open failure stops initialization. Foreign boolean opt-ins (C, UniFFI, GStreamer) still readSSLKEYLOGFILEat their adapter boundary. Enabled Iroh refuses an explicit keylog path and an explicit zerokeep_alive, which pinned Iroh 1.4.1 cannot honor.server::Request::ok()returns aSession; the driver is supervised internally and publishes a panic throughSession::closed()before unwinding.tls::Serve::resolver(resolver, &tls::Listen), keepingroot/peersclient auth and refusing competing certificate sources.connect.once/--connect-once(useClient::with_reconnect),quic::Connectionwrapper,worker::Config::with_pin, and extra QUIC-LB paths (now only[listen.lb]) are removed; lease scheduling and test hooks are private (_manual,_sim); moq-quic keeps onlyring,aws-lc-rs,rustls-aws-lc-rs,qlog,mux, andfuzz.stats.interval, cluster drain test, interop clients, env-isolated config tests, and reasoned lint attributes to this branch's shapes. moq-c boxes its dialed connection, since the accepted session variant no longer carries a driver handle and clippy flagged the size gap. Later merges add this branch's MIGRATE entries beside main's binding changes, adapt its tests to qmux binding framing at session establishment (moq-dev/moq#6528) and tomoq_net::time::Instant::now(moq-dev/moq#6510), and unblocks JS reload takes the Rust backoff config, which listed this quest as its blocker. The latest merge drops this branch's MIGRATE.md hunks (moq-dev/moq#6610) for "How to migrate" below, takes main's sharedcli::Duration(moq-dev/moq#6489) without its shadow fields, adapts main's binding state callbacks and wasm dial path (moq-dev/moq#6487) and newepochstest to the driverlessRequest::ok()andwith_reconnect(false), keeps the relay's ACME resolver ontls::Serve::resolverunder main's newacmefeature gate (moq-dev/moq#6535), and removes the moq-quic feature trim from quic-api trim, where moq-dev/moq#6583 had moved it, since this PR lands it. The merge after moq-dev/moq#6522 renames this branch's new flag to--connect-backoff-healthy/MOQ_CONNECT_BACKOFF_HEALTHY(TOML stays[connect.backoff] healthy, like the other backoff keys), adds hidden refusals beside 6522's on the typed backoff and GOAWAY fields, moves keylog and duration adaptation into 6522's shared GStreamer connection properties, keeps moq-dev/moq#6436's graceful close of an accepted moq-c session without the driver handle, and drops the driver argument from moq-ffi's new in-memory shutdown pair. The connect, listen, and backoff timeout docs drop their rustdoc links, since those fields now carry the CLI help and 6522'sflag_help_uses_plain_namesrefuses links there. On d09917f:just checkpassed every module but the host-onlyflakeimage,just rs test-changed(the whole workspace, 10,710 tests) andjust test interop --allpassed. The queue dropped d09917f for amainconflict; the next merges keep main's moq-net-enforced handshake deadline (moq-dev/moq#6520) andRequest::requests()beside this branch's driverlessRequest::ok(), keep this branch's derived connect/listen/relayDefaults (main's newimplementationfields default toNone), record a driver panic through main'sClosingcause (moq-dev/moq#6498), and keep the onestats.intervalfield with moq-dev/moq#6655's rule that an unset interval keeps the producer's default.Decisions
