Problem

Fixes moq-dev/moq#5861. Both drivers use EndpointConfig::default(), a random reset key per process, so a relay restarted on the same address can't reset its predecessor's connections and clients wait out the idle timeout. The default hashed connection ID generator is keyed per process too, so the restarted server drops those packets as invalid IDs before it would reset them; a stable reset key alone is not enough.

Approach

  • moq-quic: EndpointConfig::reset_secret(&[u8; 32]) derives the reset key and the hashed CID generator's key from one secret with HKDF-SHA256. The CID key is a weak FxHash key visible through on-wire CIDs, so the HKDF split keeps it from exposing the reset key. The sharded, QUIC-LB and moq-uring generators already validate a predecessor's IDs.
  • moq-tokio: [listen.reset] secret (--listen-reset-secret, MOQ_LISTEN_RESET_SECRET) is a path to a file holding 64 hex characters, like listen.tls.key. Unset keeps the random key; a stream-only server refuses it.
  • Secrets are files only. cluster.lan.secret drops its inline-hex form too, so neither secret lands in shell history, ps, or a traced config. The 32-byte type moves from mdns::Secret to secret::Secret: Secret::read(path) accepts exactly 64 hex characters plus an optional trailing newline (what openssl rand -hex 32 > writes) and fails loud on anything else. Its Debug prints Secret([redacted]).
  • moq-uring: quic::endpoint::Config::reset_secret: Option<[u8; 32]>, redacted from Debug; the relay's io_uring workers share it.
  • reset_secret::a_restarted_server_resets_its_predecessors_connections crashes a server (no CONNECTION_CLOSE), restarts it on the same port with the same secret file, and expects a stateless reset. Its control, a_restarted_server_without_the_key_leaves_peers_waiting, restarts with a random key and must time out instead, as on main.
  • reset_secret also lowers min_reset_interval from 20ms to 1ms, so a restart resets 2,000 connections in 2s rather than 40s. A reset is always smaller than the packet that drew it, so this never amplifies; keeping a limit still caps spoofed-flood reflection. reset_secret_resets_connections_each_millisecond pins the rate with mocked time.
  • Share the secret only across restarts of one relay, or live instances behind one address that routes by connection ID (QUIC-LB): any holder resets every other holder's connections (RFC 9000 section 21.11), and a client only accepts a reset from its peer's address.
  • Deletes the finished quest quest/m1/stateless-reset-key.md.

Decisions

Settled by the maintainer:

  1. Config shape: a file path only, like listen.tls.key, for both the reset secret and cluster.lan.secret. No HEX_OR_PATH.
  2. Naming: listen.reset.secret (--listen-reset-secret, MOQ_LISTEN_RESET_SECRET); reset_secret in moq-quic and moq-uring.
  3. Default: keep a random key; set an explicit secret for supervised restarts.
  4. Reset rate with a secret: a fixed 1ms set by reset_secret.
  5. Not derived from an existing secret: the TLS key rotates (and generate is random), and cluster.lan.secret is shared cluster-wide, the wrong scope for a reset key.

Impact

  • API (breaking): moq_tokio::mdns::Secret is moq_tokio::secret::Secret; new, load, and FromStr are replaced by read(path) and From<[u8; 32]>. moq_relay::cluster::LanConfig::secret is a PathBuf. Noted in rs/moq-tokio/MIGRATE.md and rs/moq-relay/MIGRATE.md.
  • Config (breaking): cluster.lan.secret (--cluster-lan-secret, MOQ_CLUSTER_LAN_SECRET) no longer takes inline hex in moq-relay or moq-cli; noted in both MIGRATE.md files.
  • API (additive): moq_quic::EndpointConfig::reset_secret, moq_tokio::listen::Config::reset (listen::Reset), moq_tokio::secret, quic::Error::ResetSecret, moq_uring::quic::endpoint::Config::reset_secret.
  • Config (additive): [listen.reset] secret, documented in doc/bin/relay/config.md.
  • Wire: none. Token and CID formats are unchanged.
  • Behavior: with a reset secret, the endpoint sends up to 1000 stateless resets a second instead of 50.

Follow-ups

  • moq-ffi and the bindings don't expose the setting.

Thanks for picking this up. I built a462da1 and ran it end to end on loopback: moq import ts publishing a 10 min live clip through moq-relay, moq export ts --linger 30s --stitch reading it back, the relay SIGKILLed 15 s in and restarted on the same port 1 s later. One run per arm:

publisher notices exporter notices video lost
no reset_key 10.0 s (idle timeout) 13.0 s 13.5 s
--listen-quic-reset-key 1.7 s 3.0 s 3.5 s

So it does what #5861 asked. Most of what is left is the exporter sending nothing the new relay can answer until its next keep-alive.

Three things:

  1. Sharing the key across live relays. The docs say to give the file "to every relay that should be able to reset the others' connections". Since the CID key comes from the same secret, every holder validates and resets every other holder's connection IDs. RFC 9000 §21.11 says endpoints sharing a static key "MUST be arranged so that packets with a given connection ID always arrive at an instance that has connection state, unless that connection is no longer active". Two live relays behind one address (anycast, or an L4 balancer that does not route by CID) would reset each other's live connections whenever a packet reaches the wrong one, and an off-path attacker can cause that by spoofing. Relays on different addresses gain nothing by sharing, because a client only accepts a reset from its peer's address (ResetTokenTable is keyed by SocketAddr). I'd scope the docs to restarts of the same relay, plus instances behind one address only when the balancer routes by connection ID (lb_id).

  2. Rate limit. min_reset_interval is still quinn's 20 ms, so an endpoint sends at most 50 resets a second, and nothing sets it. A relay with 2,000 connections needs about 40 s to reset them all, so most of its clients still wait out the 10 s idle timeout. Lowering it when a key is configured would fix that, or failing that, the docs could say the benefit applies to small relays. Resets are already smaller than the packet that triggers them, so a lower interval does not create an amplifier.

  3. Test. restart(false) is never called. Asserting it times out would show the integration test fails without the key. The moq-quic unit test covers a mismatched secret, so this one is optional.

Both drivers built their endpoint from EndpointConfig::default(), which
draws a random reset key per process, so a restarted server could not
reset its predecessor's connections and peers waited out the idle
timeout (moq-dev#5861). The moq-quic default also keys its hashed connection
ID generator per process, so the restarted server dropped those packets
as invalid IDs before it could reset them.

EndpointConfig::reset_secret derives both keys from an operator secret
with HKDF-SHA256. listen.reset_key (--listen-quic-reset-key,
MOQ_LISTEN_QUIC_RESET_KEY) names a file holding at least 32 bytes of
it; moq-tokio's backend and the relay's io_uring workers apply it.
Unset keeps the random key.

Closes moq-dev#5861

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Every holder of the reset secret derives the same reset and connection ID
keys, so it resets every other holder's connections. RFC 9000 section
21.11 requires that endpoints sharing a static key always deliver a live
connection's packets to the instance holding its state. Live relays
behind one address that does not route by connection ID would reset each
other's clients, and an off-path attacker could trigger it by spoofing.
Relays on different addresses gain nothing, since a client only accepts
a reset from the address its token came from.

Scope the docs to restarts of the same relay, plus instances behind one
address that routes by connection ID.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The stateless reset limit is endpoint-wide and defaults to 20ms, 50
resets a second, so a restarted relay with 2,000 connections needs 40s
to reset them and most clients still wait out the idle timeout.
reset_secret now lowers it to 1ms, resetting those in 2s. A reset is
always smaller than the packet that drew it (RFC 9000 section 10.3), so
the lower interval never amplifies, and keeping a limit still caps what a
flood of spoofed packets can reflect.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The integration test only exercised the keyed arm. Add the keyless
control, which must time out rather than draw a reset, and tighten the
bound to 1s: a reset takes one loopback round trip, and the control
waits out the whole bound.

Thanks for testing this end to end.

  1. Sharing the key: agreed. I confirmed ResetTokenTable is keyed by the peer's SocketAddr, so relays on different addresses gain nothing, and live holders behind one address would reset each other. In 8ad9d4f the relay docs and the reset_key / reset_secret field docs now cover restarts of the same relay, plus instances behind one address only when the balancer routes by connection ID (lb_id, QUIC-LB), citing RFC 9000 section 21.11.

  2. Rate limit: in d66dc30, EndpointConfig::reset_secret lowers min_reset_interval from 20ms to 1ms, so 2,000 connections reset in about 2s instead of 40s. A reset is always at least a byte smaller than the packet that triggers it (RFC 9000 section 10.3, enforced in Endpoint::stateless_reset), so it never amplifies. I kept a limit rather than zero so a flood of spoofed packets, or two endpoints resetting each other, still has a ceiling (about 12 Mbit/s worst case). A mocked-time test resets 2,000 connections 1ms apart and checks that a second packet within the same 1ms is dropped. Open question for maintainers: a fixed 1ms (current), a config knob, or a token bucket that lets the restart burst through while keeping the steady-state rate low.

  3. Test: 601df6a adds the keyless control, a_restarted_server_without_the_key_leaves_peers_waiting, which must time out rather than get a reset, and tightens the bound to 1s (the keyed arm resets in about 0.1s). With the key wiring removed, the keyed test fails with Elapsed while the control passes.

Walkthrough

The change adds shared reset-secret configuration for QUIC endpoints. The secret derives reset and connection-ID keys, and sets the minimum reset interval to 1 ms. Tokio and io_uring relay paths load or receive the secret and apply it to endpoints. Tests cover reset behavior after restart with matching or differing secrets, reset rate limiting, and configuration without a reset key.

Some valid randomly generated reset keys can prevent the relay from starting. Regenerating the key is a workaround, but the loader should preserve binary keys.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR meets the coding requirements in #5861. EndpointConfig::reset_secret derives stable reset and hashed connection-ID keys from one HKDF-SHA256 secret. Tokio and io_uring listeners load and apply the configured secret. Unset configuration keeps per-process random keys. The implementation documents the required connection-ID routing condition for shared live instances. Restart tests cover keyed resets and the keyless timeout control. Rate-limit tests cover the 1 ms reset interval.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within #5861. The added APIs, configuration parsing, validation, documentation, io_uring propagation, and tests support configured stateless resets after relay restart. The 1 ms interval supports prompt reset delivery and has dedicated coverage. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Accept 32-byte binary secrets without trimming them.

If a file contains exactly 32 random bytes and its first or last byte is ASCII whitespace, trim_ascii() shortens the secret. The length check then rejects the file and prevents startup. Preserve binary key bytes; handle optional whitespace only for a defined text-file format.

Rename `listen.reset_key` to `listen.reset_secret` (`--listen-quic-reset-secret`,
`MOQ_LISTEN_QUIC_RESET_SECRET`) and parse it like `cluster.lan.secret`: exactly
32 bytes, inline hex or a file holding the hex. The secret type moves from
`mdns::Secret` to a shared `secret::Secret`.

moq-quic's `reset_secret` and moq-uring's `Config::reset_secret` take
`[u8; 32]`, so the minimum-length check and the whitespace trim are gone, and
moq-uring's `Config` redacts the secret from `Debug`.

Deletes the finished quest.

Both the stateless reset secret and cluster.lan.secret are now paths to a

P2 Badge Reject reset secrets when no QUIC backend is built

When moq-tokio is built without the quic feature, for example in an Iroh-only binary, this guard is only reached when Server::build decides the config is stream-only. With no TCP/Unix bind it computes build_quic = true even though the backend is compiled out, so --listen-reset-secret is accepted, its file is never read, and the process runs without the requested restart behavior. Add a no-quic rejection so this unsupported configuration cannot silently succeed.

Fixed in 6af71d1: a build without the quic feature now refuses --listen-reset-secret with NoBackend, next to the existing --listen and --listen-tls-root checks, with a regression test. The same gap exists for preferred_v4/preferred_v6/lb_id on main; that's left as a follow-up.

Summary for merge at 6af71d1:

  • Reshaped per the maintainer's decisions: both secrets are file paths only, like listen.tls.key. The reset secret is [listen.reset] secret (--listen-reset-secret, MOQ_LISTEN_RESET_SECRET), and cluster.lan.secret drops inline hex. HEX_OR_PATH is gone.
  • secret::Secret::read(path) accepts exactly 64 hex characters plus an optional trailing newline and fails loud otherwise; Debug prints Secret([redacted]).
  • MIGRATE entries in moq-tokio (mdns::Secret to secret::Secret, new/load/FromStr to read/From<[u8; 32]>), moq-relay (cluster.lan.secret path only, LanConfig::secret: PathBuf), and moq-cli (--cluster-lan-secret path only). Docs updated in doc/bin/relay/config.md and cluster.md.
  • Codex finding fixed: a build without the quic feature refuses --listen-reset-secret, with a regression test that fails without the fix. Codex gave the final head a thumbs-up.
  • just check passes locally. No wire or moq-ffi change, so interop was not run.

Follow-up: a no-quic build still silently ignores preferred_v4/preferred_v6/lb_id on the default listener (pre-existing on main).

Merged main into this branch (556a907) now that #5909 has landed. No rebase or force-push.

Conflicts were docs-only and resolved mechanically, keeping both sides:

No code changed beyond the merge, so the last review still applies.

Checks: just check passes. The first run hit export::redundant_importers_switch_through_bufferbloat_on_lite_07 ("stitching export exited"), which is a known flake on main tracked in quest/m1/test-flakes-2/redundant-failover-drift.md. This PR doesn't touch that path. A full rerun passed all 5397 tests.
