quest: audit the tree against main (2026-10-20) - #6092
Conversation
Apply the quest audit: delete quests whose work landed, add missing Required links, rank blockers above dependents, refresh stale facts, and record the maintainer's decisions (e2ee over a moq-net wrapper trait that moq-mux, moq-json, moq-stats and hang take; m1 means everything before the cut; GroupState storage benchmarked before either redesign; nightly benchmarks, merge-queue GPU gate, nightly interop; net-announced-follow in m0; new contribution-ref and gateway rate quests for moq.pro). # Conflicts: # quest/m1/README.md
An auth handle backs one live session; the publisher priority is the send order tiebreak; the dynamic range replacement reaches C through the generated package. This run finishes m0/audit-quests, so its successor moves to the end of m1. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Move the JSON round trip behind the trait conversion
This acceptance test cannot run at this point in the stated order: the epic notes that moq-json still accepts concrete track::Producer/track::Subscriber types, and schedules this e2ee quest before net-wrap/json.md, which is what makes those APIs generic. Consequently an encrypted track cannot be passed to the snapshot API yet. Move this test to the JSON adopter quest, or make that conversion a prerequisite and reorder the quests.

Agreed. Fixed in 0437819: e2ee.md tests only the pass-through cases, and json.md (which now Requires e2ee.md) adds the moq-json snapshot round trip through an encrypted track.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Remove the already-satisfied #5849 gate
At this commit's parent, Release::stats already contains pub gaps in rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/stats.rs, and export_test.rs already asserts stats.gaps. Adding a Required condition that #5849 merge therefore falsely blocks this quest on functionality already present in main; remove the gate and update the surrounding wording to describe the landed prerequisite.

Agreed: Release::stats.gaps is on main (stats.rs:202). Removed the gate in 0437819, which also fixes the Quest check.

Preserve datagram authentication events in the trait
When an encrypted datagram fails authentication, the existing E2EE API must return Event::Authentication while keeping the track alive, but the exact moq-net signature returns only Result<Option<moq_net::Datagram>, moq_net::Error>. Matching that signature provides no typed value for this non-terminal event, so the planned trait cannot both mirror moq-net and satisfy the E2EE contract. Give the trait an associated datagram event type or otherwise revise the return surface before requiring the wrapper to adapt unchanged.

Agreed the plan contradicted itself. Fixed in bcaf07a within the maintainer's "mirror moq-net exactly" decision: the trait's recv_datagram yields only authenticated datagrams, a failed or duplicate datagram is dropped there and the track continues, and the draft's authentication event stays on moq-e2ee's own consumer for callers holding the concrete type. Adding an associated event type would break the exact mirror the maintainer chose.

Meter RTP wire bytes against the advertised cap
For small RTP packets or substantial RTCP/NACK traffic, counting only media excludes RTP and transport overhead, so the viewer can receive more than the goal's cap plus burst even though all proposed tests pass at the media layer. Because this cap backs egress enforcement against an untrusted viewer, charge emitted RTP/RTCP bytes to the bucket, or explicitly redefine the goal and tests as a media-payload cap rather than a send cap.

Took the second option in bcaf07a: the Goal now caps media payload, retransmits included, matching the payload-level QUIC caps. RTP/SRTP/UDP overhead stays outside it because moq-rtc chooses the packetization, so the overhead per payload byte is fixed and a viewer can't inflate it.

Align the audit with main's benchmark and smoke replans (#6081, #6046, #6022): the trend site is now the m0 regression table plus m2 benchmark sources, so the audit's m2/bench-site edits fold into m0/bench-site (the unprovisioned git.moq.dev HTTPS certificate) and its links retarget there. catalog-readers stays deleted, and the compile-time audit takes main's recorded baselines. Handle compression before the E2EE layer
When an encrypted catalog or other compress: true track is published through the new wrapper, the unchanged writer passes that flag to the underlying moq-net producer, whose compression runs only after the wrapper has encrypted each frame. AEAD ciphertext is incompressible, so the round trip still passes while the promised compression is effectively lost, contradicting e2ee/rust-publish.md's requirement to compress protected catalogs before encryption; the wrapper plan needs to consume the logical compression flag before AEAD (and clear it on the physical track), with equivalent Rust and JS coverage.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed. Fixed in 64a9b59: track::Info.compress is logical through the wrapper. moq-e2ee compresses each group with moq-net's track compression before AEAD, creates the physical track uncompressed, and inflates after decryption; @moq/e2ee does the same in JS. That keeps rust-publish's compress-before-encrypt rule.

Carry the logical compression flag to subscribers
When a remote subscriber opens an encrypted track created with compress: true, making the physical track uncompressed removes the only compression signal: track::Info.compress is what tells a consumer that group payloads need inflation. The producer-side wrapper can remember the logical flag, but the independently constructed consumer wrapper cannot, so after decryption it cannot distinguish DEFLATE bytes from ordinary plaintext and the planned compressed JSON/catalog round trip will fail. Carry authenticated logical compression metadata to the consumer, and record any added field in the E2EE draft rather than declaring Wire: none.

Agreed. Fixed in eb2c3f2 (maintainer decision): the subscriber's wrapper learns the logical compress flag from authenticated E2EE metadata, never from the physical track, whose compress stays false. The track mapping is preferred over the encrypted catalog, because moq-e2ee stays catalog-agnostic and hang drops its compression field. A flag that fails authentication fails the track loudly. The wire line now names the draft-lcurley-moq-e2ee.md change, which replaces the Catalogs section's .z sibling rule, and the JS mirror carries the same metadata.

Charge emitted SRT bytes to the cap
For small frames or streams with substantial TS/SRT overhead, pacing media frames before TS muxing does not satisfy the stated guarantee that an SRT pull never sends more than the cap plus burst: PES/TS headers and padding, SRT packet headers, control packets, and retransmissions are emitted after this accounting. The repository's SRT wire metric explicitly counts SRT headers, control packets, and retransmits (quest/m2/wire-stats/srt.md:5-8), so either debit those emitted bytes from the bucket or redefine this goal and its tests as a media-payload cap. This matters especially for a hostile viewer inducing retransmission/control traffic.

Took the second option in eb2c3f2, matching rtc-pacing: an SRT pull caps media payload, retransmits included. TS, SRT, and UDP overhead stays outside the cap because moq-srt picks the muxing and packet sizes, so the overhead per payload byte is fixed and a viewer can't inflate it.

Align with #6083: the m0 qmux credit quests stay deleted (qmux moves in-tree under m1/quic-qmux), so their README lines, the backport ranking note, and the audit's unverified qmux 0.6.4 follow-up go too. The m1 ranking keeps the audit's order and adds main's new quests; net-announced-follow stays at its m0 path. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Remove the obsolete final-notice dependency
After this decision eliminates the final hand-written notice release, quest/m1/c/README.md:42-44 still says old-crate retirement follows that release. Anyone executing the C questline is therefore given mutually exclusive prerequisites and may wait for an artifact that this audit explicitly removed; update that handoff to depend on generated C publication instead.

Add frame handles to the trait surface
The advertised frame-level seam stops at group handles: moq-mux currently calls group::Producer::create_frame and writes chunks in container/fmp4/mod.rs and container/loc/mod.rs, while consumers can use next_frame/read_chunk. Without frame::Producer and frame::Consumer associated types and methods, those importers cannot become generic over an encrypted wrapper without buffering whole frames or remaining concrete, contradicting the quest's unchanged-writer goal.

Agreed. Fixed in 99c7a8c: traits.md covers frame::Producer and frame::Consumer, linked from group::Producer::create_frame by an associated type generic over the group borrow, and the questline README's mirrored method list adds create_frame, write, next_frame, and read_chunk. e2ee.md says its frame producer buffers chunks and seals at finish, since AEAD covers the whole frame.

Remove the circular encrypted-catalog metadata option
Fresh evidence in this revision is the newly allowed encrypted-catalog encoding: for the compressed catalog track itself, the subscriber must know compress before it can inflate and parse the catalog that supposedly carries that flag. Choosing this permitted alternative therefore still breaks the protected catalog and JSON round trips; require independently readable authenticated track-mapping metadata rather than leaving the catalog as an implementation option.

Meter decoded media instead of received SRT payload bytes
For an ingest whose elementary media remains under the advertised cap, the bytes yielded by the SRT socket are MPEG-TS payload (rs/moq-srt/src/server.rs:507-523), so metering those received bytes also charges TS headers, adaptation fields, and padding. That contradicts lines 9-11, which exclude TS overhead, and can close an otherwise under-cap publisher despite the acceptance test saying under-cap behavior is unchanged; meter the demuxed media payload or redefine the ingest cap as TS payload.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Took the redefine option in 99c7a8c, but only for ingest: a publish cap counts the TS bytes the SRT socket yields, headers and padding included, because the publisher picks the muxing and could otherwise pad past the cap for free. Pull still caps media payload, since moq-srt muxes there. The plan notes a CBR encoder's null packets count, so an embedder sizes the cap to the mux rate, and the tests cover a padded publisher under the cap.

Model pending track operations in the trait graph
When a generic reader opens a wrapped track, track::Consumer::subscribe returns kio::Pending<track::Subscribing>, whose poll_ok currently yields the concrete moq_net::track::Subscriber; the existing E2EE implementation already needs its own track::Subscribing to convert that result into a decrypting consumer. This role list jumps directly from track::Consumer to track::Subscriber, so an exact subscribe method either leaks the physical subscriber and bypasses decryption or cannot retain the current signature. Model the associated pending operation as well, along with Querying and Fetching, whose results also need logical metadata and wrapped groups for the advertised moq-mux migration.

Covered in b33fb6f: the role list is now one rule. Every handle a writer or reader can get from moq-net's public API, including pending operations (track::Subscribing, Querying, Fetching), requests, and adapters, has an associated type, so no trait method returns a concrete moq-net type. The earlier entries stay as examples, and subscribe, query, and fetch now resolve to the wrapper's own subscriber, metadata, and groups.

Include concrete capture producers in the trait migration
For native capture, genericizing only moq-mux and the CLI does not make the video and audio publishers accept an encrypted broadcast: moq_video::encode::Producer::new still takes a concrete moq_net::broadcast::Producer (rs/moq-video/src/encode/producer.rs:120-124), and moq_audio::encode::Producer::new takes &mut moq_net::broadcast::Producer (rs/moq-audio/src/encode/producer.rs:257-262). Consequently moq import capture cannot pass the wrapper into either constructor, despite this quest later requiring every capture path to be protected. Add moq-video and moq-audio to the adopter work, or retain their migration in this quest.

Preserve compressed mid-group fetch semantics
When an encrypted compressed fetch starts at frame N without the earlier frames cached locally, marking the physical track uncompressed prevents moq-net from performing the range widening required by the compression contract (quest/m1/compress/README.md:54-59); later DEFLATE slices depend on the group prefix, so the wrapper cannot inflate frame N. Specify that the wrapper widens such physical fetches to frame 0 while exposing only the requested logical range, and cover a resumed mid-group fetch rather than only full round trips.

Fixed in 4296181: the wrapper's subscriber applies the widening rule itself (widen a mid-group physical request on a compressed group to frame 0, inflate, yield only the logical range), with a resumed mid-group test.

Remove FFI from this quest's epic acceptance
This Rust-and-JS-only decision explicitly defers both FFI halves, but quest/m2/e2ee/README.md:59 still defines this Required item as a consumer shape shared by the browser, CLI, and FFI. With no replacement FFI quest, the epic can therefore either be closed while its stated acceptance is false or remain blocked on work this child excludes. Update the epic wording and record the deferred producer-and-consumer work separately.

Fixed in 4296181: the epic's consumer item now reads browser and CLI, with moq-ffi out of scope. The epic Goal was already TypeScript and Rust only. I did not add an FFI e2ee quest; that is a scope call left to the maintainer as a follow-up.

Gate the E2EE trait implementation on dynamic-name support
With this quest scheduled before the E2EE epic and requiring only the trait quest, a generic publisher that calls broadcast::Producer::dynamic() still cannot be supported: physical names are one-way, while quest/m2/e2ee/dynamic-names.md:14-15 says the selected mapping's implementation will be split into later follow-up quests. The wrapper therefore cannot implement the complete mirrored trait here while preserving semantic names; add the dynamic-name implementation as a prerequisite or explicitly defer the dynamic surface.

Charge all attacker-controlled WHIP traffic to the cap
When the cap is applied to an untrusted WHIP publisher, metering only received media excludes RTP padding and all RTCP, DTLS, and ICE traffic, so a modified peer can consume arbitrary ingress bandwidth without spending its allowance. rs/moq-rtc/src/lib.rs:29-32 already exposes a per-session counter covering all UDP payload bytes; enforce the ingest bound using that counter, or separately bound every excluded traffic class, and include padding/control floods in the tests.
