Problem

moq-dev/moq#5931 implemented SUBSCRIBE_ALL, a push request for every track under a prefix. At a relay it had to merge pushed feeds into pulled copies: copies shared by path and epoch, feed attach, bounded floor SUBSCRIBEs, aggregate preferences, and a choice between duplicate copies and splicing an epochless restart. On 2026-10-19 the maintainer chose pull instead:

ugh I guess the difference is push vs pull. Maybe the right answer here is actually a method to list all of the tracks within a broadcast/namespace. I'd rather do that for moq-lite than deal with merging subscriptions and publishes.

I think TRACKS, which would actually be kind of nice as an IETF extension too? Oh actually we don't need an extension; we could issue forward=0 to learn about all tracks from IETF peers?

for TRACKS, you should report the TRACK_INFO as well for each track (maybe reuse the message entirely?) as well as have an event for knowing when we're caught up, and when a track no longer exists.

Approach

  • TRACKS. subscribe-all.md becomes quest/m1/archive/tracks.md. A lite-07 TRACKS request lists one broadcast's tracks, and the subscriber SUBSCRIBEs per track. It has three events:

    • Track added: the name plus an embedded TRACK_INFO, reusing that message's encoding wholesale. Only the name wraps it, so future TRACK_INFO fields reach listings for free.
    • Synced: an ordered SYNCED event, sent at the first drain of the reader's queue or once the reader has been sent the snapshot size N, whichever comes first. There is no count field anywhere. It means synced with this hop: a relay answers at once from what it holds and never waits on upstream.
    • Track removed: names the track; there are no entry IDs. Each reader keeps a pending queue keyed by name, as origin announcement consumers do: a removal for a queued add cancels both, and a removal for an add it saw is queued once.
  • Announce SYNCED. New quest quest/m1/announce-synced.md: lite-07's Announce stream replaces ANNOUNCE_OK's Active Count with the same SYNCED event, identical in shape. Published versions keep the count. It is Required by lite07-finalize.md and updates the lite draft.

  • Route announcements are not inventory. A prefix consumer covers broadcasts announced at their own path, and a TRACKS refused on an announced path means it is not a broadcast. The archive producer contract is narrowed to match.

  • Why the 2026-10-17 rejection no longer holds. A SUBSCRIBE with no floor and a max age at least the publisher's starts at the oldest cached group, so a new track's first groups survive the extra RTT while they are retained. The single push mechanism also cost more than two.

  • Costs. An RTT per new track, and a subscription-cap slot per track (session.subscriptions, 1000).

  • Untrusted input.

    • Listed tracks a peer makes us hold count against its announces cap.
    • Add and remove churn collapses in each reader's pending queue, so a stalled reader holds at most the names it saw plus the live set, with no global budget, and churn costs per-event fan-out, not a backlog.
    • Downstream listings share one upstream listing, and each TRACKS takes a subscription slot.
  • moq-transport. subscribe-tracks.md maps every event both ways:

TRACKS event Inbound: we answer SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS by its FORWARD Outbound: we send it with FORWARD=0
Track added, with TRACK_INFO FORWARD=0: paused PUBLISH with Track Properties (PUBLISH_SKIPPED past the cap). FORWARD=1 or omitted: PUBLISH_SKIPPED from draft-19, REQUEST_ERROR on draft-18 PUBLISH, held paused and resumed for readers (checked against the draft-18 and draft-22 text)
Synced nothing (no marker) not needed: the lite side sends SYNCED for this hop at once; PUBLISHes arrive as live adds
Track removed PUBLISH_DONE (TRACK_ENDED) on the paused PUBLISH; nothing for a skipped track PUBLISH_DONE with TRACK_ENDED on the held paused PUBLISH; any other status fails the listing

    Other gaps it records:

    • The prefix match needs filtering down to the exact namespace.
    • PREFIX_OVERLAP, read strictly (one prefix nested in the other, per the draft-14 "prefix of, suffix of, or equal to" wording it grew from), forbids nested requests but not siblings. Siblings get separate SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS. A nested listing reuses a broader request and filters locally; a broader listing cancels the nested requests, then opens its own (decision 10). Held PUBLISHes keep their streams and are adopted again, and the extra tracks held are only those nested under a listed broadcast, within the announces cap.
    • An IETF relay lists only tracks pushed to it, not ones served on request.
    • A capped inbound track is signaled with PUBLISH_BLOCKED on draft-18 and PUBLISH_SKIPPED (its rename) from draft-19. Draft-17 has no SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS.

    An unsolicited PUBLISH stays refused.

  • Salvage from feat(moq-net): SUBSCRIBE_ALL on moq-lite-07-wip #5931. The SUBSCRIBE_OK stale-start fix becomes quest/m1/subscribe-ok-start.md. The resolved-demand fix is moq-dev/moq#5986.

  • The archive README, producer, consumer, lite07-finalize.md, and the m1 README now point at TRACKS.

  • Archive layout. Each stored sequence keeps its form, group or datagram, and replays in that form. Completion markers: a track's end records a clean end Position or its error code (decision 11), written once its groups and datagrams have both ended and are stored; the broadcast's .end follows once every listed track has a marker. The track marker is named end so it sorts after the zero-padded numeric keys and the consumer's StartAfter refresh reaches it with no extra request (a ~ prefix would sort later but object_store refuses ~); the broadcast .end is seen by the delimiter LIST that finds added tracks. Only a crash or an early stop leaves no marker, so the archive reads as live.

  • Timed archive keys gain the first frame index (<first group>-<first frame>-<first pts>), so the fragments of an oversized timed group stay unique and ordered when pts repeats or goes backward (Codex review 5578421729 body finding, no thread).

  • A listing PUBLISH for a track we already SUBSCRIBEd, established or pending, is refused on every draft (DUPLICATE_SUBSCRIPTION on draft-18, UNINTERESTED from draft-19), and the existing SUBSCRIBE is the entry, keeping one upstream subscription per track.

Decisions

Settled by the maintainer (2026-10-19):

  1. Discovery mechanism

    • Keep SUBSCRIBE_ALL (push)
    • A .tracks track
    • ✅ A lite TRACKS message, with FORWARD=0 SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS for IETF peers
  2. TRACKS scope

    • ✅ One broadcast: ANNOUNCE already lists broadcasts with epochs and restarts, and a per-broadcast request resolves like TRACK and SUBSCRIBE and ends with its instance
    • A prefix, like SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS
  3. Does TRACKS still gate the lite-07 cut?

    • ✅ Yes
    • No, target whichever lite wip is current when it lands
  4. Listing events

    • ✅ Each track carries its TRACK_INFO (reusing the message), a synced marker, and an explicit removal event
  5. Initial-set marker

    • ANNOUNCE_OK-style Active Count sent first
    • ✅ An ordered SYNCED event (renamed from CAUGHT_UP) with no count anywhere, on TRACKS and on the lite-07 Announce stream alike ("We don't need the count at all")
  6. Synced at a relay

    • Wait for the count from the one upstream the request resolved, as SUBSCRIBE waits for SUBSCRIBE_OK
    • ✅ Answer at once with what this hop holds, never waiting on upstream (relays never block on peers); a cold relay may report zero, and upstream tracks arrive as live adds
  7. Inbound SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS: how we answer each listed track, by the peer's FORWARD. We never push every track's data unasked.

    • ✅ FORWARD=0: a paused PUBLISH per track, carrying Track Properties and a TRACK_ENDED removal, with PUBLISH_SKIPPED (PUBLISH_BLOCKED on draft-18) past the subscription cap
    • ✅ FORWARD=1 or omitted (the default is 1): PUBLISH_SKIPPED per track from draft-19 on, and the peer SUBSCRIBEs what it wants. On draft-18, which has no skip (PUBLISH_BLOCKED is only for stream exhaustion), the whole request gets REQUEST_ERROR (NOT_SUPPORTED), following the maintainer's rule: "if we can't deny their request and do forward=0 instead, then PUBLISH_SKIPPED"

No draft allows downgrading FORWARD=1 to a paused PUBLISH. Drafts 18 and 19 say the resulting PUBLISHes "will set the FORWARD parameter to 1". Drafts 20 to 22 use the SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS parameters as each PUBLISH's initial subscription parameters, and forbid PUBLISH_STATE_NOTIFY from changing a subscriber-controlled one unasked.

  8. When SYNCED is sent

    • ✅ The first time the reader's queue drains (poll_next returns Pending), or once the reader has been sent N events, N being the snapshot size it recorded at subscribe ("It doesn't even need to be the exact count, it could be something like count * 2 as an upper bound"), so live churn cannot postpone it. N suffices because each reader's queue delivers in insertion order, so the snapshot stays ahead of live entries; origin's lexicographic BTreeMap order would not hold this, so the announce rule switches the origin consumer to insertion order. A removal may land before SYNCED, and an unreached add/remove pair collapses
  9. Stalled readers under churn

    • Hub tombstones with two positions per reader
    • ✅ A pending queue per reader keyed by name, like origin announcement consumers: a removal for a queued add cancels both, a removal for a seen add is queued once; bounded by what the reader saw plus the live set, no global budget
  10. Nested SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS requests

  • Widen a request in place with REQUEST_UPDATE (TRACK_NAMESPACE_PREFIX), with refused-update rules
  • ✅ Never widen. A nested listing reuses a broader request and filters locally; a broader listing cancels the nested requests, then opens the broader one. A track created and removed in between is missed, within the listing contract (current state, not history). A refused broader request resets every listing it was meant to serve, so each re-requests
  1. Archive finality when a track ends with an error
  • Write no marker, so the archive reads as live
  • ✅ Record the error: the track's marker holds the error code, the consumer replays the stored groups and then fails the track with that code, and the broadcast's .end still follows once every track has a marker

Agent picks, open to challenge (the maintainer was not asked):

  • Removal by name, no entry IDs (Codex finding): costs the name's bytes per removal instead of a varint, and drops per-reader ID state.
  • Bounding what a lister makes us hold: count listed tracks, and held FORWARD=0 PUBLISHes, against the session's existing announces cap. The alternative is relying on flow control and memory alone.
  • Outbound FORWARD=0 PUBLISH: hold it paused as the listing entry, so its PUBLISH_DONE is the removal event, and make it the track's one upstream copy: a reader resumes it with REQUEST_UPDATE (FORWARD=1 plus the join filter a SUBSCRIBE would send), and the last reader leaving pauses it again. On draft-18 and draft-19 a past start adds a Joining FETCH, as the existing SUBSCRIBE path does. A second SUBSCRIBE fails on draft-18 (one subscription per track per role, DUPLICATE_SUBSCRIPTION); draft-19 on allow it, but one shape covers every draft (Codex finding). Nothing is lost, since the upstream copy carries the union of reader ranges either way; the cost is an upstream subscription per listed track for the entry's life, paused while unread. A skipped track's held paused SUBSCRIBE works the same way.
  • Archive producer input (in producer.md): keep a prefix, so hosts do not each repeat the ANNOUNCE loop. The alternative is one broadcast per producer.
  • Session subscription cap: no change. It measures per-track relay state either way; a large archive shards sessions or raises session.subscriptions.

Impact

None. This PR only changes quest files. The planned work adds a lite-07-wip stream and moq-transport SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS support.

Alternatives

See decisions 1 to 6. A .tracks track reuses delivery, but it mixes control into the media namespace and needs its own retraction encoding.

Follow-ups

  • moq-dev/moq#5986: a widened max age re-offers cached groups.
  • The moq-transport Active Count extension (drafts/draft-lcurley-moq-active-count.md) sends a count up front too. It stays out of scope as a separate published draft, but it may deserve the same SYNCED treatment.
  • The JS half of TRACKS may split out once its size is known.

quest check and just check pass.

The maintainer chose pull over push on 2026-10-19: a moq-lite TRACKS request
lists a broadcast's tracks and the subscriber SUBSCRIBEs per track, so no
relay merges pushed feeds into pulled copies. SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS maps both ways,
learning an IETF peer's tracks with FORWARD=0. The SUBSCRIBE_OK start fix
found in #5931 becomes its own quest.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Records the maintainer's 2026-10-19 decisions: one broadcast per TRACKS, TRACKS gates the lite-07 cut, and the listing reuses TRACK_INFO, marks the initial set like ANNOUNCE_OK's Active Count, and names removed tracks. SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS maps each event, holding a FORWARD=0 PUBLISH paused so PUBLISH_DONE can stand in for removal.

A count sent first breaks when an initial track is removed before a slow reader reaches it, so CAUGHT_UP is an ordered event and IDs are assigned per emitted add. A non-TRACK_ENDED PUBLISH_DONE fails the listing instead of hiding a live track.

Walkthrough

The milestone plans add Announce SYNCED and TRACKS, replacing the lite-07 Active Count requirement and the archive’s SUBSCRIBE_ALL approach. The archive plans describe discovering broadcasts with ANNOUNCE, listing tracks with TRACKS, and recording tracks through individual SUBSCRIBE requests. They also update SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS behavior and timed-track keys. A separate plan documents the SUBSCRIBE_OK Group mismatch between warm and cold relays.

No count field remains: TRACKS and lite-07 announces mark their initial set with one ordered CAUGHT_UP event. Removal names the track, so a hop keeps two positions per reader instead of per-reader IDs. A covering-prefix route is not inventory, so the archive records broadcasts announced at their own path. Capped SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS tracks are signaled with PUBLISH_BLOCKED or PUBLISH_SKIPPED.

PUBLISH_SKIPPED names a track that exists, so it is a listing add. A held paused SUBSCRIBE supplies its TRACK_INFO and its end, and failing that fails the listing.

- Around line 113-114: Update the track-removal wording near “there are no entry
IDs” to define removal as leaving the broadcast’s enumerable track inventory,
not as guaranteeing a failed SUBSCRIBE. Clarify that a broadcast::Dynamic
handler may still serve the name on demand, so a later SUBSCRIBE may succeed.

track with its own cursor, a LIST of that track's key prefix StartAfter its
newest known key, since one prefix-wide cursor skips a new key under a
lexically earlier track. A delimiter LIST of the broadcast prefix finds
tracks added since. It also re-reads a track's newest object, which the
producer may rewrite in place while an untimed group is open.

P1 Badge Poll completion markers outside forward LIST cursors

When a consumer starts following before recording completes, its per-track cursor advances past the newest zero-padded object key, but the subsequently written .end key sorts before every numeric key. A later LIST using StartAfter that object can therefore never observe .end, so the replay remains open forever despite the completed archive. Check the fixed marker separately, or place completion state where the forward cursor can discover it.
