quest(m1): plan the hidden floor below a resolved relay copy - #5986
Conversation
A resolved oldest start counts as S when aggregating floors but never filters delivery, so late groups below it still arrive. Decided by the maintainer 2026-10-19. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughThe m1 requirements now cover widened max-age cached-group re-offering and per-cursor drop budgets. The resolved-demand specification defines aggregate range and floor handling, re-offer filtering and ordering, cursor dispositions, and eviction behavior. The drop-set specification defines reasoned runs, stale budgets, the lite-07 field, Rust and JavaScript scope, compatibility rules, and validation scenarios. combineSubscriptions in js/net clears the aggregate start whenever any subscriber has no floor, so the warm-relay case needs the same fix and a JS regression test. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The maintainer chose re-offer on a widened max age with no wire change. The aggregate stays the union of subscriber ranges, so a no-floor reader keeps the upstream floor off; track.rs confirms a widened budget does not re-offer committed skips today. Re-offer stays limited to groups the cursor never sent; a relay refills groups it evicted through the subscribe-ranges miss fill. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

- Around line 194-197: Clarify the eviction rules in the cursor pool-pressure
section so local rejudgment and range-fill processing explicitly exclude
protected per-cursor stale-reported runs. Preserve the existing TooFarBehind
behavior for evicting a reachable stale-reported run or any run above it,
ensuring the protected record is not lost or re-offered incorrectly.
- Around line 168-170: Update the lite-07 expectations so a widened reader is
required to receive the group re-offer. When SUBSCRIBE_DROP was flushed before
SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE, allow the already-delivered drop and require no additional
final drop; when the drop is in flight, require that it does not settle the
widened reader. Check each reader’s received events, not only tail accounting.

Problem
A warm relay serves a new reader fewer groups than a cold one would.
moq-dev/moq#5931 found it and patched it for SUBSCRIBE_ALL tracks only, by sending the resolved start as an absolute floor (
listed_demandinf074d09e7).Approach
New quest
quest/m1/resolved-demand.md, "A widened max age re-offers cached groups", sized [M] and ranked in m1 next to resume reorder. A second new quest,quest/m1/drop-set.md([L], ranked right after it), plans the follow-on for groups already reported dropped.track.rs: a widened max age does not re-offer today.poll_next_group) can walk back a stale conviction held inseek_pendingonly until it delivers a later group, which commits the skip.Delivered(forget_past_budget).Delivered's floor, so a re-offer never resends a delivered group. It is billed to the cache pool; its floor rises only over a final prefix (delivered, reported, or stale at the max age bound), and a cursor that would have to evict anything else ends withTooFarBehind.js/netis in scope, with a regression test beside the Rust one.track_subscriber_churngains widening readers, swept over subscriber count and cached groups.Decisions
Settled by the maintainer (2026-10-19, judged on behavior):
Shape of the fix
Groups already reported in SUBSCRIBE_DROP
Drop-set design (maintainer chose to design both Codex findings now)
Max Ageit was judged under (0 when budget-independent), rather than an implicit per-update generation; drop runs bill the cache pool like groups, evict oldest first, and are forgotten past retention, with an evicted run judged locally or filled by rangeWhat reverses a stale verdict (design checkpoint after Codex findings on edge tracking)
Max Ageon the drop stays. A received stale drop settles only cursors whose range covers the relay's aggregate range; narrower ones fill the group by range. Warm/cold equivalence after an edge loss is an open question inresolved-demand.mdImpact
None. This PR only adds a quest. The planned fix changes no encoding: a publisher re-offers cached groups it never reported dropped when a SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE widens the max age or the range.
