perf(net): finish the m0 performance audit and restore the nightly bench legs - #6112
Conversation
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Same-epoch failover keeps the request's broadcast handle and re-sources its tracks (e876c17), so the requests bench's handle-identity check failed and broke the Nightly JS leg. Use readsFrom, as the origin tests already do. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The stalled-announce sweep reaches the lite publisher's console.debug, which Bun prints to stdout and the Nightly report rejected as malformed CSV. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The JS leg now takes minutes, so schedule the six benches Nightly skipped (net observed, json codec and parse, hang slow-group, watch warmup, clock timers), emit report-readable CSV from the four that printed TSV or JSON, and check the inventory like the Rust one. The sim spin check (#5990) counts ready polls per task poll, and the feed fetch benchmark never yields, so its setup crossed the limit at 64 held fetches and failed the Nightly benchmark tests leg. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

#5929 (fe722ce) doubled the instructions per track subscribe (3,233 to 6,950 in the track_subscriber_join loop under callgrind): Cursor::new published a placeholder window and then ran update_servable, whose closure ran twice and built the window's runs into a fresh RangeInclusiveSet each time, plus one more set per cap. Every join paid about five BTreeMap and three Arc allocations for a window that is almost always one run. Build the published window directly in Cursor::new, resolve the runs once per update, and keep them as a Servable, which holds a single run inline and caps it in place. A subscribe now takes 4,492 instructions; what remains over the pre-#5929 cost is the Window itself. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…regressions Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Delete the m0 run, add the m1 successor with the instruction-count method, baselines, the attributed open regressions, and the ranked unbenchmarked paths, and add the allocation-free subscriber window quest. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Record warning traffic as measurements
When the number or size of warnings regresses, the nightly report will not record either value as a measurement: javascript_file recognizes only timing headers, so warnings and bytes become dimensions in the series name, such as groups=16/warnings=15/bytes=300/catchup_ms. A warning-traffic change therefore creates a new catch-up series instead of producing a comparable warning or byte data point, defeating this benchmark's stated purpose and preventing the trend report from flagging that regression. Extend the report parser/unit convention and name these columns as measurements rather than dimensions.

The m0 performance audit it linked finished in #6112, leaving the link dangling on main. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Completes the m0 performance audit (
quest/m0/audit-perf.md, deleted here) and adds its m1 successor, quest/m1/audit-perf.md.Changes
fix(bench): the JSrequestsbench checked failover by handle identity, which feat(net): resume JS tracks across same-epoch route swaps; keep a replaced route feeding until its successor delivers #5836 (e876c1722) replaced with a resumed front. It now usesreadsFrom, as the origin tests do. This failure was breaking the Nightly JS leg.fix(bench): thebroadcastsbench's stalled-announce sweep printed liteconsole.debuglines into its CSV on stdout, and the report rejected the file. Debug output now goes to stderr, matchingrequests.ts.ci(bench): the JS leg now runs in about 3 minutes, so the six JS benches Nightly never ran now run nightly: netobserved, jsoncodec/parse, hangslow-group, watchwarmup, and clocktimers. Four of them printed TSV or JSON, or used a_usdimension column, and now print report-readable CSV. New recipes:json-codec-bench,json-parse-bench,slow-group-bench.test_every_js_bench_runs_nightlychecks the JS inventory the way the Rust one does.fix(bench):benchmark_feed_fetch_wakesnever yielded, so the sim spin check from fix: catch spinning sim tasks and yield cached FETCH writes #5990 panicked at 64 held fetches. It now yields between setup phases, outside the timed loop.perf(net)(cd13ed531): thetrack_subscriber_joinregression came from feat(moq-net): serve each subscriber its own ranges, with time anchors #5929 (fe722cec9). It doubled a subscribe from 3,233 to 6,950 instructions:Cursor::newpublished a placeholder window, thenupdate_servableran its closure twice and built the window's runs into a freshRangeInclusiveSeteach time, plus one more per cap. The window is now built once, and runs are kept as aServable, which holds a single run inline and caps it in place. Instructions per join at the merged head: 7,135 before, 4,492 after. A unit test checks thatServable::belowkeeps exactly the groups the set path kept.quest/m0/audit-perf.mdis deleted, and its successor in m1 records the method, the baselines, the open regressions with a recommendation each, and the ranked unbenchmarked paths. A new [S] m1 quest, Allocation-free single-range subscriber window, owns the join cost left after the fix.Attribution (callgrind instructions per iteration; host load does not move them)

It runs real loopback sockets with 10 samples of 300 ms, so its CI swing is load.49448d2ef), +42k. Its lookahead no longer decodes groups ahead of the cursor, so eachpoll_event's reap of aborted groups callsgroup::Consumer::poll_finishedon every pending group, about 1,070 calls per 16-frame export. fix(net): read lower buffered groups across route copies #6019 (9f1fc92fe) adds +27k, of which +12k ismemcpy. Neither is a local fix: the reap change touches moq-mux delivery semantics and needs its own bench swept over buffered groups. Both are recorded in the successor with a recommendation.catalog_estimate_fanout: +5% at feat(data)!: data consumers return each value's timestamp #5677 (ad54a9721), and +4% across feat(moq-net): time anchors for subscription ranges #6074 and feat(hang): VR projection, stereo, and ambisonic catalog metadata #5543, where a larger catalog is expected. Recorded in the successor.Decisions
Window::new's three allocations. They get their own [S] m1 quest (linked above) rather than a change here, because they touch the window's representation and are separately landable.json-parsebench drops its derivedratiocolumn, since a non-timing column would become part of the series name and rename the series every night. The ratio can be computed from the two timings.Follow-ups
The successor quest lists the ranked unbenchmarked hot and fan-out paths (HLS/DASH serving, session datagram delivery, LOC/CMAF containers, JS hang consumer and copies, moq-quic loss recovery, relay
/announced, JWT verification, importers, JS audio ring) and the open regressions above. Each can become its own/quest-planfollow-up when the m1 run starts.Checks
just checkafter merging main (Rust nextest: 7,953, 516, and 223 tests, clippy as the wrapper with warnings denied), andquest check.bench/relay.test.pytest_a_foreign_listener_never_proves_relay_readiness(15 s timeout), andietf::publisher::tests::a_draft_16_cancel_ahead_of_the_answer_ends_only_its_request(5/5 alone).API / wire impact
None. The
perf(net)change is private tomoq-net's track cursor. The rest touches only benches, Nightly scripts, recipes (newjust js json-codec-bench,json-parse-bench,slow-group-bench), and quests.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
