Problem

moq_tokio::quic::driver is the only async runtime for moq-quic on tokio, but it was #[doc(hidden)] and moq-tokio required moq-net unconditionally, so an application that wanted send groups, reset_at, receive credit, and live Limits without a MoQ session had to fork quinn's async layer again.

Approach

Implements quest/m1/quic-driver.md and deletes it.

  • net feature (default): dep:moq-net plus dep:web-transport-trait. _transport enables it, so every transport feature (quic, websocket, tcp, uds, iroh, webrtc) does too. It gates client, connect, connection, listen, origin, transport, their root re-exports, the moq_net re-export, and the moq-net-backed parts of Error.
  • driver feature: quic::driver alone, with moq-quic, pin-project-lite, rustc-hash, and socket2. quic enables it. The crypto-provider compile_error! now keys on driver.
  • The driver loses #[doc(hidden)] and its "not a stable API" comment; its module docs now describe what it adds over quinn and how to build it alone.
  • The driver's wire counters exist only to feed moq-net's stats, so the field and its per-poll stats() read are under cfg(feature = "net") (decision 1). SendStream::set_drop_reset, used only by WebTransport, is under cfg(feature = "quic").
  • In-tree consumers that use moq-net-backed modules without a transport feature enable net: moq-bench, moq-boy, moq-room (dev), moq-rtmp (dev), and moq-rtc (dev; its normal dependency only needs RedactedUrl). The examples and the integration-test binary declare required-features = ["net"].
  • CI: sh/rs/tokio-features.sh (run by just check whenever moq-tokio is affected) now clippies the driver-only build with --all-targets and fails if its normal tree contains moq-net, reqwest, notify, or any quinn, noq, or web-transport crate. --all adds net to the isolated-feature loop, and the nightly cargo hack --each-feature picks both new features up automatically.

Decisions

Settled by the maintainer on 2026-10-20.

  1. Driver wire counters. The quest asked for driver-owned counters that moq-tokio converts at its boundary. moq-net's transport::Wire is a push handle the transport writes on every poll, so there is no live conversion without either a moq-net source trait (option C in moq-dev/moq#5773, rejected there as a callback) or copying on the session's own wakes (option B there, rejected for losing tail bytes).
    • ✅ A: keep moq_net::transport::Wire in the driver behind cfg(feature = "net"). Three cfg lines, no new API, moq-net's stats unchanged. A driver-only app reads Connection::stats() as in quinn.
    • B: a public driver Wire handle plus a moq-net WireSource trait. Two new public items and the shape feat(stats): collect owned transport wire counters #5773 rejected.
  2. Feature names.
    • moq-net and quic-driver: match the optional dependency and the quic::driver path.
    • ✅ net and driver: net gates the moq-net session layer; driver builds quic::driver alone.
  3. Error.
    • ✅ Keep the root Error, gating only its moq-net variants. The quest expected it to go away without moq-net, but quic::Config::validate, log, and tls all return it. Only Error::MoqNet, Error::Connect, Error::connect_error, and Error::is_auth are gated. Smaller break, simpler code.
    • Drop Error from driver-only builds.
  4. kio in the driver-only tree. The quest's goal lists kio as excluded, but it arrives through moq-clock, which moq-quic itself requires. kio is this repo's own small poll-primitives crate, depends only on smallvec, and contains no MoQ code.
    • ✅ Accept it. The CI guard does not forbid it.
    • Make moq-clock's kio dependency optional.

Public API and wire impact

  • Breaking: with default-features = false and no transport feature, client, connect, connection, listen, origin, transport, Client, Connection, ConnectError, Addrs, Backoff, Redirect, Status, Transport, Error::{MoqNet, Connect, connect_error, is_auth}, and the moq_net re-export are gone. MIGRATE.md has an entry: enable net or a transport feature.
  • Additive: the features net and driver. quic::driver is now documented, supported API, and quic::Limits/LimitsError are available under driver.
  • Default-feature builds are unchanged. Wire: none.

Validation

  • just check passes.
  • just rs tokio-features --all passes, including the driver-only clippy and dependency-tree guard.
  • cargo hack check -p moq-tokio --each-feature --exclude-features _transport --features aws-lc-rs passes all 16 sets, including net and driver alone.

Follow-ups

  • moq-tokio's tests assume a transport: cargo clippy -p moq-tokio --all-targets --no-default-features --features net fails in listen.rs/connection.rs lib tests and the integration binary. This was already true for any no-transport build. No CI runs that combination today. A small quest could gate those tests on _transport and add the build to tokio-features --all.
  • Rustdoc for reduced feature sets has broken intra-doc links (Client, connect, listen, and the existing server ones). Only the all-features doc build is gated. Low priority.
  • If an embedder needs a leaner driver build, gate moq-tokio's unconditional dependencies (already noted in the quest as its own quest).

moq-net moves behind a default `moq-net` feature that every transport
enables, and a new `quic-driver` feature builds `quic::driver` alone. The
driver is now documented public API. Its wire counters feed only moq-net's
stats, so they are recorded only when that feature is on.

Outcome at e7a5272: the quest is implemented. It stays a draft for the maintainer because of four open decisions, each with a recommendation in the body: (1) gating the driver's wire counters on moq-net rather than adding driver-owned counters, (2) naming the features moq-net and quic-driver, (3) keeping Error and gating only its moq-net parts, and (4) accepting kio in the driver-only tree, which comes in through moq-clock. just check and cargo hack --each-feature pass, and the 40 driver tests pass without moq-net.

…and driver

The maintainer settled the names: `net` gates the moq-net session layer and
`driver` builds `quic::driver` alone.

Only WebTransport sets it, so the driver-only build flagged it as dead code
once main's drop-reset change merged in.

Walkthrough

The moq-tokio crate separates its Tokio QUIC driver from MoQ networking through the driver and net features. Network modules, re-exports, errors, and connection statistics are conditionally compiled. In-tree dependencies, migration guidance, crate documentation, and feature validation were updated to reflect the feature split.

Outcome at 77a9994: the maintainer's 2026-10-20 decisions are in.

  • Features renamed: moq-net is now net (the moq-net session layer) and quic-driver is now driver (quic::driver alone), across moq-tokio, its consumers, sh/rs/tokio-features.sh, MIGRATE.md, and doc/lib/rs/index.md.
  • Kept as recommended: the driver's Wire counters behind cfg(feature = "net"), the root Error with only its moq-net variants gated, and kio in the driver-only tree.
  • Merged origin/main. Its drop-reset change (moq-dev/moq#5909) added SendStream::set_drop_reset, which only WebTransport calls, so it is now gated on quic for the driver-only build.

just rs tokio-features --all and cargo hack --each-feature pass. just check passed apart from redundant_importers_switch_through_bufferbloat_on_lite_07, a known load flake tracked in quest/m1/test-flakes-2/redundant-failover-drift.md that passes alone. The Codex review of this head found nothing.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

State the requirements for a standalone driver build.

The driver feature alone does not produce the described build. With default features enabled, the build includes net; with defaults disabled, driver requires aws-lc-rs or ring to compile. State both conditions here so readers can select working features. As per coding guidelines: “State a claim's conditions with it.”
