feat(qmux): run qmux in tree on the QUIC stream state machine - #6231
Conversation
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`moq_quic::mux`, behind the `mux` feature, runs the QUIC stream state machine over a reliable, ordered transport: QMux drafts 00, 01, and 02. Serializing a frame acknowledges it, so flow control credit, stream retirement, and held resets follow the same paths QUIC uses. It encodes transport parameters in the order qmux 0.6 does, keeps STREAM payloads under the 16352-byte ceiling released peers enforce, and handles QX_PING keep-alives, RTT probes, and the idle and handshake timeouts on a caller-supplied clock. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A byte-stream or WebSocket reader detects an oversized record or broken framing before the connection sees a record. handle_oversized and handle_violation close with the right transport error code so the peer still gets a CONNECTION_CLOSE. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…chine qmux 0.7 keeps the 0.6 transports (TCP, TLS, WebSocket, Unix sockets) and config shape, but its session drives moq_quic::mux instead of its own stream state machine, and implements moq-net's transport::poll traits directly. The legacy `webtransport` wire format is gone: an ALPN or subprotocol that names no QMux version is now an error. Tests cover the session over an in-memory stream on paused time, and wire interop with qmux 0.6.3 in both roles on every version. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
qmux::Session now implements moq_net::transport::poll itself, so moq-tokio and moq-relay hand it straight to moq-net instead of wrapping it in the async web-transport-trait adapter, which keeps serving quic and iroh. accept_request takes an already-poll session; callers wrap only the async backends. A WebSocket upgrade must now select a QMux subprotocol: the bare `webtransport` fallback and the no-subprotocol legacy route are refused. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Adds qmux's MIGRATE guide for 0.6 to 0.7, the moq-tokio and moq-relay entries for refusing WebSocket upgrades without a QMux subprotocol, the crate row in the Rust docs, and golden vectors for the stream, reset, and close frames. Records the 2026-10-21 decisions in the quest. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The ts job builds moq-relay, which now depends on the in-tree qmux, so a qmux change has to trigger it. Also drops a stray `mut` in the golden test. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Decisions settled while starting the quest (maintainer, 2026-10-21):
Not in this PR: moq-relay still advertises only qmux-01 and qmux-00, so draft-02 waits for a separate change. Verified locally: (Written by Opus 5.5) |
qmux runs in tree on moq-quic's stream state machine, so the quest is done. Its dependents (tls:// peer certificates, qmux byte counters) are unblocked and point at the in-tree crate; the 2026-10-21 decisions live on the PR. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

A RecvStream that saw RESET_STREAM reported a clean end on its next read or closed() check, because reading the reset frees the connection's stream state. It now remembers the code. Draft-00 ignores a peer's max_record_size, which it does not define and which could shrink our frames to nothing, and Config refuses a record size the peer would reject. A zero rtt_interval made every timer poll due, so the writer sent QX_PING in a hot loop; a zero idle timeout expired at once while telling the peer it was disabled. Both are refused, with None as the way to disable them. Config refusals report Error::InvalidConfig rather than borrowing the peer-facing TransportParameter. A finish() refused by STOP_SENDING marked the stream as our own reset, so closed() then reported a clean end; it now reports the stop. A record with no frames and a WebSocket text message are malformed QMux and close the session instead of passing as activity. `just test qmux` found its examples only when run from test/; it now resolves them from the recipe's directory. A small QMux datagram kept its whole record alive while the receive buffer charged only its payload, so padded records could pin far more than the buffer allowed. Datagrams under half their record are now copied out. The ordered-offset check skipped a peer stream's first frame, since the stream had no state yet; a new peer stream now expects offset 0. On 32-bit targets a peer-sent record or frame length above usize::MAX truncated with `as usize` and could pass the size check, desynchronizing the reader. Lengths now saturate, so the limit refuses them. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Receiving judged every DATAGRAM as if it carried a Length field, refusing a length-less frame that exactly fills the peer's limit; it now checks the frame's bytes on the wire. Sending reserved the worst-case overhead, so max_size understated the limit (1191 of 1197 bytes at 1200) and allowed an empty payload under a 1-byte limit; it now uses Datagram::max_payload. qmux now runs on moq-quic's stream state machine (#6231) and implemented the old moq-net RecvStream through Chunks::hold credit. Port it to the lease-based trait through poll::Buffered, keeping its read-as-you-go credit: native leasing would need qmux's 1 MiB max_data raised past MIN_RECEIVE_WINDOW. The mux connection exposes leased() in place of release(), and the read-ahead backlog for the removed poll_closed goes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The 38 s cell in run 39734065658 was a stalled player, not a slow one: the browser decoded 3 video frames and no audio for 30 s. Under load the C++ publisher fell back to WebSocket, and crates.io qmux 0.6 never returned connection credit for bytes a stopped or dropped stream left unread. Every subscription the relay cancelled as the fast subscribers left leaked its window, until the publisher could not send. The in-tree qmux on the QUIC stream state machine (#6231) returns that credit, and `credit_returns_for_unread_and_stopped_streams` covers it. Reproduced with a WebSocket publisher, eight short-lived subscribers, and one browser on two CPUs: 3/12 browser cells stall at #6231's parent and at the failing commit, 0/20 at #6231, 0/28 on main. Quest:
quest/m1/quic-qmux.md(finished and deleted here; its 2026-10-21 decisions are in the comment below).qmux moves into the monorepo as
rs/qmux(0.7.0) and runs on moq-quic's stream state machine instead of its own. moq-tokio and moq-relay depend on the in-tree crate, so moq no longer pullsqmuxfrom moq-dev/web-transport.How
moq_quic::mux(behind themuxfeature): a sans-IO QMux connection that drives QUIC's own streams, flow control,RESET_STREAM_AT, datagrams, and send scheduler. Serializing a record to the reliable transport counts as its acknowledgment. Only framing and the QMux-specific rules (params first, prohibited frames, record size,QX_PINGkeep-alive) live here.qmuxcrate: the tokio session plus the TCP, TLS, WebSocket, and Unix socket adapters, ALPN negotiation, and socket stats, ported from 0.6 with its API shape.Session,SendStream, andRecvStreamimplementmoq_net::transport::pollnatively, so moq-tokio drops itsweb_transport_traitadapter for qmux (QUIC and iroh keep theirs).qmux::Sessiondirectly. Each transport reports its ownBinding, so WebSocket sessions keep their URI.Commits are layered: the mux hooks, the crate, the consumer switch, then tests and docs.
Public API and wire impact
web_transport_trait;Upgraded::new(ws, alpn)replacesnew+with_alpn, andconnect/acceptreturnResult; the three per-stream windows becomemax_stream_data; the idle, handshake, and RTT timers areOption<Duration>; error codes areu64;StreamId/StreamDirare no longer exported. New:SendStream::reset_at,Session::send_group,Error::DatagramTooLarge, andError::InvalidConfigfor aConfigit cannot run with (a zero timer, or a record size below 16382). Seers/qmux/MIGRATE.md.webtransportWebSocket format is removed, decided by the maintainer as a long-superseded fallback. moq-relay and moq-tokio answer a WebSocket upgrade that offers no QMux subprotocol with 400. QMux draft-00, 01, and 02 are unchanged and verified against qmux 0.6.3.muxmodule behind the newmuxfeature:Connection,Config,Event, andVersion(#[non_exhaustive]).
