Problem

The nightly smoke workflow does not exercise englishm/moq-interop-runner's published Docker registry against this checkout, so an implementation registered upstream is not tested here until someone wires it in by hand. This finishes quest/m1/interop-runner-nightly.md.

Approach

  • Build this checkout's relay image and adapt it to upstream's certificate and Compose healthcheck conventions (just runner-build).
  • Follow the upstream default branch HEAD without credentials, pull only published registry images, and partition the runner into two matrices: every client against our relay, and our clients against every other Docker relay. Local-build-only adapters are listed as not run.
  • Validate complete pair coverage, combine both matrices' summaries, and render the runner's own HTML report.
  • Any failed pair or setup step fails the job. Both matrices still run and the report is written and uploaded first, since the failing run is the one worth looking at.
  • Upload the report from the read-only runner job and publish it from a separate job under interop-runner/ with the existing pages-publish and pages-clean helpers in the benchmark-pages queue. pages-clean is required here, not only for reruns: the relay report publishes a github-pages artifact from the same run.
  • Wire the selection and failure tests into the nightly repository-tooling suite.

Decisions

Upstream setup vs verdict contract:

  • ✅ Any failure fails the run. A failing third-party pair fails the job like a setup error; there is no report-only class. (Maintainer: "Why do we care, a failure is a failure?")
  • Obtain a distinct setup status or exit code upstream, then accept classified test verdicts locally.
  • Fail closed on any nonzero exit and stop at the first failing matrix.

Report on failure:

  • ✅ Run both matrices, write and publish the report, then fail (recommended; matches the relays lane, which publishes its report when a required relay fails).
  • Fail at the first failing matrix without a report.

Pages cleanup:

  • ✅ Reuse just gh pages-clean from moq-dev/moq#6207 in the publisher; no new helper.

Quest:

  • ✅ Delete quest/m1/interop-runner-nightly.md and its links: this PR finishes it, so the decisions above live here rather than in its Plan.

Impact

Validation

Both matrices ran locally against upstream HEAD c4633257 with the source-built relay (rootless Podman plus Docker Compose 5.6):

  • Coverage: 38 pairs, 18 clients against our relay and our 2 clients against 10 published relays; 5 local-build-only adapters listed as not run.
  • Startup failure: the first pass found every pair unhealthy because busybox:stable is glibc-linked and the scratch relay image has no loader, so the healthcheck could not exec sh. Fixed with the static busybox:stable-musl. That pass also exercised the failure path: both matrices still ran, the report was written, then the job failed.
  • Test failures: on the second pass every pair started; 15 pass cleanly and 23 have real not ok TAP cases, including some moq-dev clients against third-party relays. The report was written and the run failed, as decided. Every local pair also hit a rootless-Podman-only network teardown error (rootless netns: kill network process: permission denied), which GitHub's Docker runners do not have.
  • just check: passed. just gh check: passed. quest check --base origin/main: passed.
  • python3 test/smoke/runner.test.py and python3 sh/gh/pages-clean.test.py: passed.
  • Not run: the Pages publish job, which only runs on main. The shared root index lists */index.html, so interop-runner/ appears once the benchmark writer regenerates it.

just runner-build needs moq-dev/moq#6586: since moq-dev/moq#6159, every crane package build on main fails (workspace.lints was not defined), including the root Dockerfile. Local validation applied that fix.

Follow-ups

  • With any failure failing, Smoke's nightly is red until all 23 failing pairs pass. The interop audit owns classifying them; it now points at this report.
  • No new quest.

Checkpoint efff8619a1 is pushed. Local CI and the five focused tests pass. The PR stays a draft because accepting ambiguous upstream exit 1 would hide setup failures. The quest records the remaining conditions. Full Docker/Compose and Pages validation have not run; disposable investigation files are removed.

Upstream issue draft for maintainer review, not posted outside this repository:

Distinguish Docker setup failures from client test verdicts

At runner commit f79603dc, run-interop-tests.sh --docker-only gives no structured distinction between a Compose startup failure and a client test failure. Downstream CI needs to fail on lost coverage while reporting third-party verdicts without gating.

Minimal command-level reproducer: use a registry containing one compatible Docker client/relay pair, stub docker image inspect as successful, and run the real runner with GNU Make. In two isolated fixture directories, make the test target print either Docker Compose startup failed or not ok 1 - third-party test failed, then exit 1. GNU Make returns 2 in both cases.

Observed in both runs: runner exit 1, summary cell status: "fail", exit_code: 2. A complete summary therefore does not establish that setup succeeded. A preflight cannot classify a startup fault that occurs later during the matrix.

Expected: expose an explicit setup-failure status or equivalent exit contract, distinguishable from client verdicts, including failures that occur during matrix execution. Downstream consumers can then fail infrastructure and report client verdicts without scraping logs.

Recommendation: settle that upstream contract first, then complete the runtime validation and reuse the pending shared Pages cleanup. No follow-up quest was started.

Any failed pair or setup step fails the job, after the report from both
matrices is written and uploaded. The publisher drops this run's earlier
Pages artifact with the shared pages-clean helper, since the relay report
publishes from the same run. This finishes the runner nightly quest.

busybox:stable is glibc-linked, and the scratch relay image has no system
loader, so Compose's healthcheck could not exec `sh` and every pair failed
to start. The musl variant is static.

Walkthrough

The change adds an upstream Docker interoperability runner with dynamic matrix selection, compatibility validation, report generation, and cleanup. It adds Docker and Just commands, unit tests, and smoke-lane documentation. CI builds the relay image, runs the upstream runner, uploads diagnostics, and publishes successful reports on main. The quest documentation now references the smoke workflow report instead of a separate nightly job.

Iteration stopped early on usage. All work is committed and pushed at 8c7ec13423; the PR is marked ready.

Done

  • Merged origin/main (no rebase).
  • Applied the maintainer decision: any failure fails. Both matrices still run and the report is written and uploaded before the job fails. The publisher reuses just gh pages-clean, which is required here because the relay report publishes a github-pages artifact from the same run.
  • Fixed a real startup bug: busybox:stable is glibc-linked, so the scratch relay's healthcheck could not exec sh. Switched to the static busybox:stable-musl.
  • Ran both real matrices locally: 38 pairs, all started. 15 pass and 23 have real TAP failures, so Smoke's nightly will be red until those are fixed.
  • Deleted the finished quest and its links. Recorded the decisions with ✅ in the PR body.
  • Opened moq-dev/moq#6586: since moq-dev/moq#6159, every crane package build on main fails, including the root Dockerfile that just runner-build uses.

Checks

  • Passed locally: just check, just gh check, quest check --base origin/main, runner.test.py, pages-clean.test.py.
  • Not finished: PR CI was still pending (CodeQL Analyze jobs) when I stopped. Pages publishing only runs on main.

Next steps

  1. Wait for CI on this head. Fix any failure and address any automated review findings.
  2. Land moq-dev/moq#6586 before this PR, or runner-build fails on main.
  3. After the merge, check the first main Smoke run's Publish upstream runner report job and https://git.moq.dev/interop-runner/.

Merge pass summary:

  • Added bounded retries (3 attempts, 2s/4s backoff) to the runner image pulls, per the CodeRabbit finding; a pull that still fails aborts the run, and test pairs are never retried.
  • Merged origin/main (picks up the fix(nix): keep crane's kio manifest in the dependency stage #6586 crane fix this PR needed).
  • Kept "any failure fails" as chosen: the Smoke nightly is expected to go red until quest/m1/audit-interop.md triages the failing pairs.
  • Checks: just check, runner.test.py, quest check passed locally; Codex thumbs-up on the final head.
