refactor(media)!: trim the media crate surface (m1 api-audit) - #6517
Implements quest/m1/api-audit/media-trim.md: media items added since release now have a consumer or are private, and Rust and JS media names agree.
Decisions
All four were settled by the maintainer as recommended.
HLS history is deleted, which removes the premise of quest/m1/archive/history-floor.md.
✅ Delete history and range playlists, and delete the history-floor quest (quest rm), since nothing sets Config::history outside tests.
Restore history as pub(crate) so the quest keeps a base (dead code until something sets it).
moq-audio Preset is deleted entirely, not just Applied/preset(). A preset only chose a frame duration, which Config::frame_duration already sets.
✅ Delete Preset; moq-ffi drops MoqAudioPreset and MoqAudioEncoderOutput::preset, and OBS maps its preset setting to frame_duration_us (low latency 10 ms, balanced/quality 20 ms).
Keep Preset/with_preset and drop one of the two ffi fields.
The two encode::Options collide.
✅ Fold video's Options fields (bitrate, codec, kind, bandwidth) into encode::Capture next to capture, so encode::Options only names audio's producer options.
Rename video's struct and keep it nested, matching audio's Capture { capture, encode }.
moq-hls loses its Reader-over-HLS tests (export/archive_tests.rs), which built objects through the now-private moq_archive::{Object, Group, Frame, Store::put_segments}.
✅ Accept; the archive consumer quest carries "playlists read only timelines, segments GET only their rendition's objects", since it replaces Reader anyway.
Rewrite the fixture over moq_archive::Producer now.
Changes
moq-video
encode::{Applied, Control, Driver, Options}, Encoder::applied, Sink::applied, DmaBuf::new, and DmaBufLayout are private or removed.
color::Range re-exports hang::catalog::Range; hang's Range gains Hash.
moq-audio
encode::Settings is encode::Config (Options::config, Encoder::config()).
Preset, with_preset, preset(), Applied, and Encoder::applied are removed.
encode::Kind::Named and decode::Kind::Named are removed.
playback::Observer::finish returns a future in place of polling finished(); it waits through a kio::WaiterList, so a cancelled finish (moq-cli's metrics timeout) leaves no waker behind, and resolves at once when no stream is left to close the measurement out.
moq-ffi and bindings:MoqAudioPreset and MoqAudioEncoderOutput::preset are removed. The Go, Kotlin, Swift, Dart, and Python wrappers drop their Preset aliases, and OBS maps its setting to frame_duration_us.
moq-hls
Config::history, range playlists (?start=&end=), and Error::{HistoryPruned, RangeNotDurable, RangeUnavailable} are removed.
export::Route/Resource are available without the server feature. Rendition::segment(&segments::Id) refuses another generation's URL, and Rendition::init(hash) takes the hash, so a downstream edge can call Route::parse, with its encoded-/ refusal, instead of copying it.
export::master is private.
doc/bin/hls.md no longer documents history or ranges.
moq-archive:Key, segment::*, the store module internals, Error::Pagination, and every Store method except new, prefix, and timelines are private or removed.
moq-json: window Checkpoint, Encoder::resume, and Producer::resume are removed. Window Producer::cut stays public, since moq-dev/moq#6597 exposes it through moq-ffi. Snapshot mutate takes (f, at), like @moq/json.
moq-mux:timeline::Producer::{resume, flush} and Error::TimelineCheckpoint are removed, and the importers' dropped_metadata is test-only.
hang:catalog::Section, deserialize_section, and Catalog::from_value are crate-private.
JS
The test-only @moq/locProducer is removed, along with the Container.ConsumermaxAge guard.
@moq/hang exports Catalog.encode, which @moq/publish uses instead of stamping version by hand.
Quests: deletes quest/m1/api-audit/media-trim.md (done here) and quest/m1/archive/history-floor.md (its history mode is gone), removes references to the deleted APIs from quest/m1/archive/{README,consumer,catalog-hls}.md, and drops quest/m2/video-cut-test-only.md's blocker on this quest.
Supersedes a deferral:moq-dev/moq#6519 left moq-hls's (1 << 53) - 1 ms "unset" subscriber budget in export/history.rs for this PR to decide. Deleting history deletes that file, so the budget is gone and its option (b) follow-up is moot.
Public API and wire impact
These are breaking removals and renames in moq-video, moq-audio, moq-ffi (and every wrapper), moq-hls, moq-archive, moq-json, moq-mux, hang, @moq/loc, and @moq/hang. Items added since release that were removed need no migration. How to migrate the released ones: The only HTTP behavior change: moq-hls no longer accepts ?start=&end=, which always answered 416 from the CLI. Wire: none.
moq-video
encode::Control, encode::Driver, and encode::Options are gone. Set the encode fields (bitrate, codec, kind, bandwidth) directly on encode::Capture next to capture, and run it with encode::publish_capture; drop its future to stop the capture. There is no public keyframe request for a capture publish; a joining subscriber still gets one through the track's refresh.
encode::Applied, Encoder::applied, and Sink::applied are private. The encoder logs the controls it applied for Config::preset at debug level when it opens.
DmaBuf::new and DmaBufLayout are private until an external producer needs them. DmaBuf surfaces from capture and decode are unchanged.
moq-audio
encode::Settings is encode::Config, matching decode::Config and moq_video::encode::Config. encode::Options::settings is config, and encode::Encoder::settings() is config().
encode::Kind::Named and decode::Kind::Named only checked the codec, which the encoder takes from Config::codec and the decoder from the catalog. Drop the variant and use Kind::Auto.
moq-hls
server::Route and server::Resource are export::Route and export::Resource, available without the server feature. Resource::Segment and Resource::SegmentAt are one Resource::Segment { kind, rendition, segment }, whose segments::Id carries the generation, the reference tag, and segments::At::Sequence or At::Pts. Rendition::segment(tag, sequence) is segment(&id) and refuses a segment URL from another generation. Rendition::init() is init(hash), answering only the init Resource::Init names. Parse the request path with Route::parse instead of splitting it yourself, so an encoded / cannot smuggle a broadcast past your policy check, and pass the parsed id through:
To warm the init before a media playlist, call Rendition::playlist(query), which builds it.
Range playlists and Config::history never shipped, so Rendition::playlist(query) keeps its released signature and every timeline, durable ones included, lists its capped window of 256 segments. Pending MIGRATE.md notes about playlist(range, query), Config::history, or RangeUnavailable no longer apply.
export::master is private. Render the multivariant playlist with Broadcaster::master_playlist.
moq-archive:Key, the segment module (Frame, Group, Object), the store module and its list queries, Error::Pagination, and every Store method but new, prefix, and timelines are private or removed. Store is now only the handle a Producer records into and a Reader serves from: build it with Store::new(inner, prefix) and hand it over. Record objects with Producer, not by writing them yourself, and keep your own ObjectStore handle for any listing or cleanup outside the archive layout.
moq-json: snapshot mutate(at, f) is mutate(f, at), in the same order as @moq/json.
hang:catalog::Section and catalog::deserialize_section are internal to the catalog's own sections. An application section decodes through its own serde impl; copy the fallback if it needs one.
@moq/loc:Producer and Source are gone; the package decodes LOC only. Publish media through @moq/publish, or write LOC frames yourself: a varint property length, the 0x10 timestamp property in microseconds, then the codec payload.
@moq/hang:Container.Loc.Producer is removed with it, so the Container.Loc re-export has only the decoder. Container.Consumer's maxAge guard is gone: rename maxAge to maxDelay, since an untyped maxAge is now ignored.
Checks
Run on 3ee9c525ab, the tree merged with main (9abfd651fe). That merge took moq-dev/moq#6432's MoqAudioProducerOptions and moved track off MoqAudioEncoderOutput as it does, dropped the preset fields and Go/Dart preset aliases it carried, and regenerated the Dart bindings.
just check: every selected module passed (js, rs lint, quest, drill, py, kt, swift, go, dart, cpp, obs_compile, obs), except flake, which this sandbox cannot build (no user namespaces for the runner image). The phases after it (ts_paths, markdown, shell, large_files, toml, nix, justfile, gh) were run by hand and passed, as did the test phases: Rust (9794 + 513 + 226 passing), JS, Python (104 passing), and gh.
just test interop --all: 172 of 172.
quest check --base origin/main --branch quest/m1/api-audit/media-trim: ok.
Earlier merges: Go's TestReservationUpdateReleasesSubscribedTrack and the rust -> js-native-node interop audio gap each failed under load and passed on rerun; both are tracked by quests on main (quest/m1/test-flakes-2/{go-reservation-grant,interop-timestamp-gap}.md).
Not run: macOS, Windows, and Android backends; nightly --all-features.
Review
Codex: Observer::finish kept a cancelled future's waker. Fixed with kio::WaiterList and a regression test.
Codex: Observer::finish hung forever once the engine's last stream had gone away, since only a live ledger acknowledges one. Fixed: the shared state counts live ledgers, and finish resolves when none is left (a stream opened after it counts nothing). Covered by finish_without_a_stream_resolves_at_once.
Codex (declined): asked for MIGRATE.md entries for the removed audio presets. None of Preset, with_preset, Applied, or MoqAudioPreset is on release, so no user migrates from them.
Iteration
Merged main after moq-dev/moq#6610 and moq-dev/moq#6495. Took main's version of every MIGRATE.md and moved this PR's notes into the impact section above. Kept #6495's authorization checks on the trimmed API: playlist(query), segment(&id) (before the generation check, so a denied reference still reports its refusal), segment_at, and numbered. Adapted #6495's tests to segments::Id, latest_init, and the removed range playlist. Restored window Producer::cut to public, since moq-ffi's new Window binding from #6597 calls it. just check reran on the merged head.
Merged main again after moq-dev/moq#6600, moq-dev/moq#6374, moq-dev/moq#6482, moq-dev/moq#6398, and moq-dev/moq#6522. Kept #6600's recording cursors (next_at, retire, RecordingLagged) and its catalog-wide Fanout::fail(None), but dropped the history branch it added (Fanout::unbound and the superseded-reader clause in fail), since history is deleted here. Kept #6374's Error::ResourceRefused and restored the futures dev-dependency its import test uses. just check (all but flake, which this sandbox cannot build) and just test interop --all passed; the Dart leak_test RSS bound failed once under load and passed on rerun.
The queue dropped 84d9f255dc on a conflict with moq-dev/moq#6649 and moq-dev/moq#6383. Re-merged main through 67446ddf90. #6649 put every rendition URL under @{instance}: its instance field and @{instance} segment now live in this PR's export::Route/Resource (Media, Init, and the one Segment), with #6649's parse tests and refusal of the old layout, and the server handlers take #6649's instance-scoped At. #6383's audit rewrote media-trim.md to keep history and range playlists (its decision dated 2026-10-22); this PR keeps its later decision 1 above and deletes media-trim.md, history.rs, and archive_tests.rs as before, so #6138's with_range edits to the last two go with them. just check stops at flake in this sandbox; every phase after it and every test phase was run by hand and passed (Rust 10262, Python, JS, kt, go, cpp, obs, dart, gh, quest), as did just test interop --all (172). After merging moq-dev/moq#6109, cargo check --workspace --all-targets --all-features, just dart check, and quest check pass; after moq-dev/moq#6665, which touches only e2ee, quest check passes.
The queue dropped 703122ba5e again on a conflict with moq-dev/moq#6171, which edited export/archive_tests.rs (deleted here) and the archive consumer quest. Re-merged main through a183d3e114: archive_tests.rs stays deleted, and the consumer quest keeps #6171's note that a track::Fill carries no time anchor beside this PR's HLS coverage bullet. Every just check phase but flake (run by hand; Rust 10321 tests) and just test interop --all (172) pass on the merge before moq-dev/moq#6529; one earlier interop run failed only rust-swapped -> js on the browser audio tone check and passed in full on rerun. After #6529, cargo check --workspace --all-targets --all-features, quest check, the Rust tests (10331), Python, and just dart check pass.
Follow-ups
Drop moq-video's test-only cut requests already tracks deleting Requests and the cut counting behind the private Control::cut; this PR drops its now-satisfied Required link.
Make DmaBufPlane::new private, since nothing outside the crate can build a DmaBuf any more.
`encode::Control`/`Driver` are crate-private: `publish_capture` is the only
capture entry point, and its encode knobs move from the deleted
`encode::Options` onto `encode::Capture`, so `encode::Options` names only
audio's producer options. `encode::Applied` and the `applied()` accessors
go private; the encoder still logs what a backend applied. `DmaBuf::new`
and `DmaBufLayout` go private until an external producer needs them, and
`color::Range` reuses `hang::catalog::Range` instead of duplicating it.

- encode::Settings is encode::Config (Options::config, Encoder::config).
- Remove encode::Preset, with_preset, preset(), Applied, and
Encoder::applied: a preset only picked a frame duration.
- moq-ffi drops MoqAudioPreset and MoqAudioEncoderOutput::preset, so
preset plus frame_duration_us can no longer be refused at runtime.
Wrappers drop their Preset alias; the OBS plugin maps its preset
setting onto frame_duration_us.
- Remove encode/decode Kind::Named, which only checked the codec.
- playback::Observer::finish returns a future in place of finished()
polling; the driver thread wakes it off the audio thread.

- hang: `catalog::Section`, `deserialize_section`, and `Catalog::from_value`
are crate-private.
- @moq/loc: drop the test-only `Producer`.
- @moq/hang: drop the `Container.Consumer` `maxAge` guard; export
`Catalog.encode`, which @moq/publish uses instead of stamping `version`.

- moq-hls: remove `Config::history`, range playlists, and their errors; the
CLI never set history, so `?start=` only ever answered 416.
- moq-hls: `Route`/`Resource` move to `export` without the `server` feature;
`Rendition::segment` takes the parsed `segments::Id` and `init` the hash.
- moq-hls: `export::master` is private.
- moq-archive: `Key`, `segment`, `store` internals, and most `Store` methods
are private; `Store` keeps `new`, `prefix`, and `timelines`.

The implementation is complete and pushed; the PR stays a draft until the four decisions in the body are settled. The main one is whether removing HLS history also retires quest/m1/archive/history-floor.md. The finished quest file still needs quest rm, which I could not run here. just check passed, with one Dart hook-guard flake that passed on rerun.
The pull request changes audio configuration, playback completion, HLS export, catalog encoding, LOC support, archive storage, window publishing, and media APIs. Audio presets are replaced with explicit frame durations and a shared encoder configuration. HLS history and range-playlist paths are removed, while route parsing and segment identifiers are added. Several public APIs become crate-private or are removed, including archive pagination, window checkpoints, and video capture controls.

Observer::finish parked a cloned Waker in a slot nothing cleared when the
future was dropped, such as on moq-cli's metrics timeout. Register through a
kio::WaiterList instead, whose entries die with the waiting future.

Stopping for usage; nothing is uncommitted, and head dc31bcfcd6 is pushed.
Done: applied all four maintainer decisions, removed the media-trim and history-floor quests and their links, merged main three times (conflicts resolved), fixed the tests and lint the merges exposed, fixed the Codex finding (the Observer::finish waker is now released through kio::WaiterList, with a regression test, and the thread is resolved), and updated the PR body. The PR is marked ready.
Checks:just check passed on dc31bcfcd6 for every module except flake, which this sandbox cannot run because it lacks user namespaces. The Rust (9673), JS, and Python tests also passed there. moq-uring was excluded because of the shared RLIMIT_MEMLOCK. just test interop --all passed 172/172 on 3302537983. Not rerun after the observer-only fix. Not run at all: macOS, Windows, Android, and nightly --all-features.
Remaining: CI on dc31bcfcd6 was still pending when I stopped. Only CodeQL and Quest run on PRs to main; the merge queue runs Check.
Next: watch gh pr checks 6517, then run /quest-merge on this PR.
A finish called after the engine's last stream went away waited forever:
only a live ledger acknowledges one. Count live ledgers in the shared state
and treat none as already final.

Document migration from the removed audio preset APIs
For existing audio preset users, this commit removes Rust's encode::Preset, with_preset, and applied, plus MoqAudioPreset and the preset fields/aliases in the language bindings, but the migration guides contain no corresponding instructions. The new audio entries cover only the config rename and Kind::Named. Add entries to rs/moq-audio/MIGRATE.md and each affected binding package's guide explaining how to replace presets with explicit frame durations (10 ms for low latency, 20 ms for balanced/quality) and that the applied report is gone. Root AGENTS.md requires migration instructions in every affected package for breaking changes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining: none of these shipped. On release, moq-audio has no Preset, with_preset, applied, or Applied (it still has Settings, which is why that rename does get an entry), and moq-ffi and the py, go, swift, kt, and dart packages have no MoqAudioPreset or preset field. They were added on main after the last release, and MIGRATE.md covers only breaks to released API, so there is nothing for a user to migrate from.
Drops the history branch #6600 added to the fanout (unbound, the superseded-reader history clause), keeps its catalog-wide fail(None), and restores the futures dev-dependency #6374's import test uses.

Public manifest docs now point to an unusable init call.
Rendition::init now requires a hash. The hash-less latest_init is pub(crate). build_inits is pub(crate) and gated on the server feature.
The docs for Broadcaster::manifest (export/mod.rs Line 258-259) and Rendition::media_playlist (Line 582-584) still say to await init first. A caller does not know the hash before the init exists. A non-server embedder that renders the DASH manifest for an inline-parameter-set codec has no documented way to build the init.
Do one of the following:
Update those docs to name playlist or init as the way to build the init (init returns None for an unknown hash but still caches the build).
Expose a public method that builds the init and returns its hash.

Encode and decode frames for the [Low Overhead Container (LOC)](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-moq-loc/), a lightweight container format defined by the MoQ working group.
Each LOC frame is a small property block (timestamp, optional per-frame timescale) followed by a raw codec bitstream payload. This package provides `Format` (decoder) and `Producer` (encoder) classes that plug into `@moq/hang`'s container dispatch.

Update the stale "Encode" claim in the package intro.
This package no longer ships Producer. Line 5 now says the package provides only the Format decoder. Line 3 still says "Encode and decode frames", which is no longer true. Change line 3 to describe decoding only. Check the description field in js/loc/package.json for the same wording.

Include manual cuts in the group-lifetime description.
A group can end before either cap when a caller invokes Producer::cut. The current sentence hides that option from readers who need complete groups for storage. Mention Producer::cut alongside refresh requests and caps.

Restore HLS archive integration coverage or remove the migration claim.
The former rs/moq-hls/src/export/archive_tests.rs tested both behaviors: playlists avoided media GETs, and segment requests fetched only the selected rendition's objects. That file was deleted. The remaining moq-archive reader tests do not cover HLS playlists or rendition-scoped segment requests.
Keep the requirement explicit and remove the inaccurate migration statement:
Suggested guidance update
- Cover HLS export over a consumer broadcast with its archived catalog:
- playlists read only the timelines, and a segment GETs only its own
- rendition's objects. The Reader-based `moq-hls` archive tests went with- `moq-archive`'s public segment API.+ rendition's objects. Add integration coverage for both behaviors.

Update the HLS archive guidance around the consumer-broadcast coverage
requirement: retain that playlists read only timelines and segment requests
fetch only their selected rendition’s objects, and replace the claim that the
Reader-based tests migrated to moq-archive with an explicit requirement to add
integration coverage for both behaviors.

Implements quest/m1/api-audit/media-trim.md: media items added since release now have a consumer or are private, and Rust and JS media names agree.

All four were settled by the maintainer as recommended.

Set the encode fields (bitrate,codec,kind,bandwidth) directly onencode::Capturenext tocapture, and run it withencode::publish_capture; drop its future to stop the capture. The phases after it (ts_paths, markdown, shell, large_files, toml, nix, justfile, gh) were run by hand and passed, as did the test phases: Rust (9794 + 513 + 226 passing), JS, Python (104 passing), and gh.just test interop --all: 172 of 172.quest check --base origin/main --branch quest/m1/api-audit/media-trim: ok.TestReservationUpdateReleasesSubscribedTrackand therust -> js-native-nodeinterop audio gap each failed under load and passed on rerun; both are tracked by quests onmain(quest/m1/test-flakes-2/{go-reservation-grant,interop-timestamp-gap}.md).--all-features.Review
Observer::finishkept a cancelled future's waker. Fixed withkio::WaiterListand a regression test.Observer::finishhung forever once the engine's last stream had gone away, since only a live ledger acknowledges one. Fixed: the shared state counts live ledgers, andfinishresolves when none is left (a stream opened after it counts nothing). Covered byfinish_without_a_stream_resolves_at_once.MIGRATE.mdentries for the removed audio presets. None ofPreset,with_preset,Applied, orMoqAudioPresetis onrelease, so no user migrates from them.Iteration
Merged main after moq-dev/moq#6610 and moq-dev/moq#6495. Took main's version of every
MIGRATE.mdand moved this PR's notes into the impact section above. Kept #6495's authorization checks on the trimmed API:playlist(query),segment(&id)(before the generation check, so a denied reference still reports its refusal),segment_at, andnumbered. Adapted #6495's tests tosegments::Id,latest_init, and the removed range playlist. Restored windowProducer::cutto public, since moq-ffi's newWindowbinding from #6597 calls it.just checkreran on the merged head.Merged main again after moq-dev/moq#6600, moq-dev/moq#6374, moq-dev/moq#6482, moq-dev/moq#6398, and moq-dev/moq#6522. Kept #6600's recording cursors (
next_at,retire,RecordingLagged) and its catalog-wideFanout::fail(None), but dropped the history branch it added (Fanout::unboundand the superseded-reader clause infail), since history is deleted here. Kept #6374'sError::ResourceRefusedand restored thefuturesdev-dependency its import test uses.just check(all butflake, which this sandbox cannot build) andjust test interop --allpassed; the Dartleak_testRSS bound failed once under load and passed on rerun.The queue dropped
84d9f255dcon a conflict with moq-dev/moq#6649 and moq-dev/moq#6383. Re-merged main through 67446ddf90. #6649 put every rendition URL under@{instance}: itsinstancefield and@{instance}segment now live in this PR'sexport::Route/Resource(Media,Init, and the oneSegment), with #6649's parse tests and refusal of the old layout, and the server handlers take #6649's instance-scopedAt. #6383's audit rewrotemedia-trim.mdto keep history and range playlists (its decision dated 2026-10-22); this PR keeps its later decision 1 above and deletesmedia-trim.md,history.rs, andarchive_tests.rsas before, so #6138'swith_rangeedits to the last two go with them.just checkstops atflakein this sandbox; every phase after it and every test phase was run by hand and passed (Rust 10262, Python, JS, kt, go, cpp, obs, dart, gh, quest), as didjust test interop --all(172). Re-merged main through a183d3e114:archive_tests.rsstays deleted, and the consumer quest keeps #6171's note that atrack::Fillcarries no time anchor beside this PR's HLS coverage bullet. Everyjust checkphase butflake(run by hand; Rust 10321 tests) andjust test interop --all(172) pass on the merge before moq-dev/moq#6529; one earlier interop run failed onlyrust-swapped -> json the browser audio tone check and passed in full on rerun.
