Problem

CLI and GStreamer names disagreed, --passthrough described two container policies, and linger meant both a subscriber's wait for a replacement and two unreleased publisher opt-ins (moqsink linger, <moq-publish linger>). This implements the CLI flags quest and finishes it.

Approach

  • RTMP pacing uses --delay; fMP4/HLS fragment preservation uses --cmaf; TS keeps --passthrough. Remove unpublished intermediate refusals while preserving migration errors for released spellings.
  • Both GStreamer elements share private connection parsing/configuration and expose connect-version, TLS verification, and QUIC idle/keep-alive/keylog settings. Update the real interop shell consumer.
  • Retry/GOAWAY flags and environment use connect- / MOQ_CONNECT_; TOML keys stay unchanged. Auth key sources conflict during usage-rs parsing. HLS HTTP TLS uses MOQ_HLS_TLS_* independently of the MoQ listener.
  • Remove the unreleased publisher linger opt-ins: moqsink's boolean linger property and <moq-publish linger> / element.linger / controls.linger / BroadcastInput.linger. Both keep their default close-at-end behavior: moqsink EOS closes the broadcast and posts EOS at once, and turning <moq-publish> advertising off unannounces at once. The drain machinery only those opt-ins reached (moqsink's linger task, JS Broadcast's finished-broadcast tracking) goes with them.
  • Delete the finished quest and split migrating pinned downstream consumers into its own quest under the API audit epic.

Publisher retention after a clean end belongs to the broadcast lifecycle epic planned in moq-dev/moq#6570: a moq-mux helper retains a finished broadcast for a fixed --linger duration, which moqsink will expose as a duration property. Nothing of it is implemented here.

Validation

  • After merging main (3e00a892ea), just check passed: 4,885 default Rust, 519 capture, 238 playback and the affected JS workspace tests, plus lint and quest checks. quest check --base origin/main passes.
  • Earlier, before narrowing: complete Nix just ci and just test interop --all (164 harness checks plus 8 protocol controls) passed on the flag changes.
  • moqsink: published_media_posts_the_eos_at_once restores the default-path assertion (EOS posts once, immediately). parsed_connection_properties_are_shared_and_validated covers the shared connection properties on both factories.
  • @moq/publish: the re-announce test still asserts turning the announce off unannounces at once and continues the catalog's group sequence.
  • Searched the repo (docs, demo recipes, justfiles, test harnesses, Nix modules, CI workflows) for every renamed or removed spelling. No invocation still uses one: remaining --passthrough uses are all TS, and the relay's MOQ_LISTEN_TLS_* is the MoQ listener. Checked the new spellings against the current --help output.

Impact

Per moq-dev/moq#6610, MIGRATE.md is written at the breaking cut, so the migration notes live here.

  • CLI (breaking), moq-cli, moq-tokio, moq-relay, moq-boy, moq-bench:
    • Rename --backoff-* to --connect-backoff-* and --goaway-* to --connect-goaway-*, and MOQ_BACKOFF_* / MOQ_GOAWAY_* to MOQ_CONNECT_BACKOFF_* / MOQ_CONNECT_GOAWAY_*. Old spellings are hidden and stop startup naming their replacements; TOML stays [connect.backoff] and [connect.goaway]. moq-bench is unpublished, so it only needs the new spellings.
    • moq export rtmp: rename --max-delay (and the released --max-age) to --delay, matching paced FLV output. fMP4, H.264 and H.265 exports keep --max-delay.
    • moq import fmp4 / import hls: --passthrough is --cmaf (add --cmaf to keep publishing CMAF). TS keeps --passthrough.
    • moq export hls: move MOQ_LISTEN_TLS_CERT, MOQ_LISTEN_TLS_KEY, MOQ_LISTEN_TLS_GENERATE and MOQ_LISTEN_TLS_ROOT to MOQ_HLS_TLS_CERT, MOQ_HLS_TLS_KEY, MOQ_HLS_TLS_GENERATE and MOQ_HLS_TLS_ROOT. The old variables now configure only the MoQ listener; the HLS --listen-tls-* flags keep their spelling.
    • Released names fail with migration guidance; no compatibility aliases.
  • GStreamer (breaking): replace moqsrc versions="moq-lite-06" with moqsrc connect-version="moq-lite-06"; moqsink accepts the same comma-separated property, and moqsrc now also accepts quic-idle-timeout and quic-keep-alive in milliseconds, matching moqsink. The unreleased moqsink linger property is removed; EOS behavior is unchanged from the default.
  • @moq/publish: the unreleased BroadcastInput.linger, <moq-publish linger>, element.linger and controls.linger are removed, so the unreleased "BroadcastInput has a linger input" note no longer applies. Announce behavior is unchanged from the default.
  • Wire encoding, foreign binding APIs and package versions: unchanged.

Decisions

  • ✅ Retain the approved distinct --cmaf policy flag. Preserve explicit refusal for old released names.
  • Pinned downstream consumers can only adopt the new spellings after moving their pin past this change.
    • ✅ Land the upstream implementation now; finish this quest and split the consumer migration into its own follow-up quest. (Maintainer decision, 2026-10-23.)
    • Keep this PR a draft until the consumers migrate.
  • Align with the linger audit (moq-dev/moq#6570)?
    • ✅ Narrow it: keep the renames and the removal of the linger properties, drop always-finish. (Maintainer decision, 2026-10-23.)
    • Land as is (every clean end serves the finished tail through Finish).
  • With the opt-ins gone, the drain code behind them is unreachable.
    • ✅ Delete it; the lifecycle epic's retention helper replaces it.
    • Keep it for the epic to rewire.

Walkthrough

The change renames CLI flags and environment variables for connection retry, CMAF import, RTMP delay, and HLS TLS settings. It makes auth key-source options mutually exclusive during parsing. GStreamer source and sink elements use shared connection properties, and the sink closes its broadcast and posts EOS when all pads reach EOS. The JavaScript publisher no longer supports linger behavior. Documentation, tests, interop invocations, and migration guidance are updated.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 1a25b

The identified documentation issue is corrected, and the removed flag spellings do not require migration handling. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Merging. The maintainer chose to land the upstream flags now and split the pinned-consumer migration into quest/m1/api-audit/cli-flags-consumers.md. CI is green, the current head has a non-Grok review, and quest check passes against main.

The maintainer decided on 2026-10-23, in the linger audit (moq-dev/moq#6570), to narrow this PR:

  • Keep: the flag renames, and the removal of moqsink's boolean linger and <moq-publish linger> / BroadcastInput.linger.
  • Drop: "always finish and serve the clean publisher tail through the existing bounded finish handle". moqsink and <moq-publish> keep today's close at the end.

The new broadcast lifecycle epic deletes moq-net's Finish. Completion and retention move to a moq-mux helper, which moqsink will use with a linger duration property.

Coordination with moq-dev/moq#6522: that PR renames --backoff-* / MOQ_BACKOFF_* to --connect-backoff-* / MOQ_CONNECT_BACKOFF_*, and this PR adds --backoff-healthy / MOQ_BACKOFF_HEALTHY. Whichever merges second renames the new flag to --connect-backoff-healthy / MOQ_CONNECT_BACKOFF_HEALTHY, including its doc and MIGRATE.md mentions. It is unreleased, so it needs no old-spelling refusal.

…opt-ins

Per the linger audit (#6570), moqsink EOS and <moq-publish>
keep closing at the end. Remove the drain code only the unreleased opt-ins
reached; publisher retention moves to the broadcast lifecycle epic.

Update the moqsrc property list to use connect-version.

The source-specific list still names versions, while Line 69 says both elements share connection properties. The new test configures moqsrc with connect-version. …grate

Keeps this PR's deletion of quest/m1/api-audit/migrate.md and main's
deletion of quest/m1/ffi-shutdown-sync.md (finished by #6436).

Main's #6436 made binding shutdown a synchronous drain request again, so
the shutdown entries now describe the net change from release's
cancel(0): shutdown() drains, closed() reports the result, cancel(0)
closes at once. Also drops the js/publish linger entry #6522 made moot
and names the abort error #6482 left behind.
