feat(net)!: ask a moq-transport peer only about watched prefixes - #6530
Quest: IETF lazy discovery. Rewrites it to the JS remainder (see Follow-ups).
Problem
A Rust moq-transport client asked for its whole subscribe scope at connect. On drafts 14 and 15 that scope is the empty prefix, which a peer that declared no MoQ Solicit is never asked for (the drafts forbid a zero-field namespace), so moq against moxygen's draft-14 QUIC relay discovered nothing: moxygen announces nothing unasked. Rust also never sent UNSUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE (moq-dev/moq#6133), and both languages encoded the draft-14 one wrong: draft 14 names the Track Namespace Prefix, draft 15 the Request ID.
Reproduced with MOQ_BIN=target/debug/moq just relays --only moxygen (draft-14 QUIC cell red, draft-16 WebTransport green) and in-tree by an_empty_namespace_is_not_asked_of_a_foreign_peer_before_draft_16, whose watched-prefix case fails on main.
Approach
Lazy on every draft. The IETF session drives SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE from the same Discovery the lite subscriber uses (moq-dev/moq#6165): a client asks only under watched prefixes and ends a request 2s after nothing at or beneath it is watched; a server, and a client fed into peer()/upstream(), still ask for their whole scope. New ietf/subscriber/namespaces.rs replaces the per-prefix FuturesUnordered in both session branches.
Ending a request. Drafts 14/15 write UNSUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE on the control stream; later drafts FIN (through draft 18) or reset the stream and read until the peer closes its half. A request that ends while waiting for request-ID credit takes no ID.
No overlap at a foreign peer. Every draft forbids a SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE that shares a prefix with an open one, and moxygen enforces it (PREFIX_OVERLAP). At a peer that declared no MoQ Solicit, Discovery::exclusive closes the narrower requests beneath a broader one, and the broader one goes out only once each has left the wire. A peer that declared Solicit is ours and accepts overlap, so it keeps moq-lite's hold semantics, which never retract a route mid-handover. That matters on drafts 14/15, where our publisher withdraws what a subscription advertised when it is unsubscribed.
Draft-14 UNSUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE names the prefix in Rust and JS; both control-stream adapters route an incoming one by the peer's subscribed prefix.
A withdrawal applies before its re-advertisement. The control-stream adapter (drafts 14-16) hands each request to its own handler, so a PUBLISH_NAMESPACE right after a PUBLISH_NAMESPACE_DONE for the same namespace could be handled first: it read as a second advertisement, and the replacement never reached the origin as an end and a start. Pre-existing, but routine once each watched prefix has its own request, since their announcements interleave on the wire (epochs::ietf14 from moq-dev/moq#6548 failed on every run after merging main). The adapter now holds a re-advertisement until the withdrawn request's handler drops its stream, which it does after releasing the route.
Unsolicited PUBLISH_NAMESPACE outside any watched prefix (the quest's third bullet): left as is. It costs one announces slot and a route, and is already bounded by design: each open one holds a request ID of our MAX_REQUEST_ID window on drafts 14-16, or a bidi stream from draft 17, and the announces cap closes the session past it. Refusing it would lose it for good, since a peer that tells unasked does not repeat it on a later SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE.
Impact
Wire: no new messages. A Rust client sends fewer SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE requests, now sends UNSUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE (drafts 14/15) or closes the request stream (16+), and at a peer without Solicit never overlaps two. The draft-14 UNSUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE now carries the prefix in both languages, as draft-14 section 9.31 defines it. No drafts/ change: all of this is moq-transport behavior.
Behavior (breaking): on a moq-transport client, request_broadcast for a path nothing watches now fails Unroutable, as on moq-lite.
Public API: none. Crate-private Discovery::exclusive. The IETF message types are not exported (moq-net's ietf module is private, JS does not export UnsubscribeNamespace).
Migration: no MIGRATE.md change here (moq-dev/moq#6610); the cut should extend the moq-dev/moq#6165 "client asks only about what it watches" entry, in rs/moq-net/MIGRATE.md and every binding's (rs/moq-ffi, rs/moq-c, py/moq-ffi, py/moq-rs, swift, swift/ffi, kt/moq, kt/moq-ffi, go/ffi, go/wrapper, dart/moq, dart/moq_ffi, cpp/moq), from moq-lite to moq-transport:
Drop "On moq-lite," from its first sentence: a client session on any protocol asks its relay for announcements only under paths something watches, instead of under its whole scope at connect.
Its last line becomes "moq-lite-03/04 sessions are unchanged." (rs/moq-net: "moq-lite-03/04 sessions, whose announce streams mark no initial set, are unchanged."), since moq-transport sessions now behave the same way.
Docs: doc/lib/rs/moq-net.md, doc/concept/standard.md, and the client-discovery docs on request_broadcast (moq-net, moq-ffi, moq-c) no longer say moq-lite only.
Tests
rs/moq-net/src/ietf/session.rs: a client asks nothing until watched, then only the watch; d14/15 unsubscribe after the linger, by prefix on 14 and request ID on 15; at a foreign peer a broader watch sends UNSUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE before the broader request (d14/15) or waits for the peer to close the narrower stream (d16-22); at our peer it keeps the narrower open.
rs/moq-net/tests/integration/lazy_discovery.rs: six ietf_* tests over drafts 14-22 against our own server: nothing asked until watched, only the watched prefix, linger then withdraw, a broader watch retracts nothing, a waiting read asks, a relay link asks for everything.
rs/moq-net/src/ietf/adapter.rs: a_readvertisement_waits_for_the_withdrawal_to_be_handled (drafts 14-16): a re-advertisement after a withdrawal reaches accept_bi only once the withdrawn stream drops, a chain of two withdrawals releases one at a time, and another namespace is not held up. Fails with the hold disabled. a_session_closed_behind_a_withdrawal_drops_what_it_held: a session that closes behind a withdrawal drops what it held without re-entering the lock (from Codex review; hangs without the fix).
Codec round trips for UNSUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE in Rust and JS; the JS publisher's d14 namespace-update test now unsubscribes by prefix.
Mutation check: dropping the wait on overlapping requests fails a_broader_watch_waits_for_the_narrower_to_leave_the_wire.
a_request_ended_before_it_opened_does_not_block_the_broader_one (drafts 16, 17, 22): a request ended while waiting on bidi credit drops its open, so only the broader one opens once credit arrives (from Codex review; fails without the fix). Adds SinkSession::with_open_bi_gate to the test transport.
Checks
On 4506b719c3129e0ca0f5e841551531af2fc0a2ef (merged with main at eaf2422f1d): moq-dev/moq#6409 on main opens subscribe_namespace streams with Stream::open_request, refused with NoStreamCredit instead of parked. This PR moved those opens into the run_namespaces closures, so they now call open_request (draft-16's open_native_bi already refuses on main); a refused open ends that request with a warning, as any non-protocol error does here. moq-net tests (3138, including main's announce_interest_without_credit_keeps_the_session_alive and every lazy_discovery test), just check (every module, including test rs, test js, and test py), and just test interop --all passed.
On the previous head, after merging main (including the epoch routing test from moq-dev/moq#6548):
cargo nextest run -p moq-cli --test integration epochs: all four versions passed in 9 consecutive runs. epochs::ietf14 failed on every run before the adapter fix.
just check: passed (moq-net and friends: 8466 tests).
just test interop --all: all checks passed.
Earlier on this branch: MOQ_BIN=target/debug/moq just relays --only moxygen (test/smoke): draft-14 QUIC and draft-16 WebTransport both pass (draft-14 failed before).
Not run: just ci, the nightly feature matrix, macOS/Windows.
Decisions
Settled by the maintainer and recorded in the quest's Plan:
Scope: JS strict-peer non-overlap.
✅ Leave it to the rewritten quest; this PR fixes only the d14 wire codec in JS. JS already asks only about watched prefixes, and non-overlap needs a session signal for when a request is off the wire.
Add it here.
Overlap policy.
✅ Keyed on MoQ Solicit: exclusive requests only at a peer that declared no Solicit, overlapping hold semantics at our own peers. Only foreign peers enforce PREFIX_OVERLAP, and exclusive-with-everyone restarts routes on drafts 14/15.
Exclusive everywhere (one code path, route restarts at our peers).
PUBLISH_NAMESPACE that outlives an UNSUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE (drafts 14/15) or arrives unsolicited.
✅ Keep it until the peer withdraws it, bounded by request credit/streams and the announces cap. It is indistinguishable from an unsolicited advertisement, and cancelling one loses it for good.
PUBLISH_NAMESPACE_CANCEL what no open request covers, at a peer without Solicit.
Alternatives
Hand the replaced request's routes to the broader one until its initial set is in. Built and dropped: no peer that refuses overlap negotiates MoQ Active Count, so without a count the handover would land at REQUEST_OK, before the broader request's NAMESPACE messages, and restart the routes anyway. A foreign peer's routes under a replaced narrower request restart once instead.
Exclusive with every peer. Simpler, but on drafts 14/15 our own publisher withdraws a replaced subscription's PUBLISH_NAMESPACE, so every narrower-then-broader watch would restart those routes and end their subscriptions.
Keep asking for the whole scope and special-case the empty prefix. The CLI subtree scope tried in moq-dev/moq#6255 lost the sibling broadcasts a catalog references.
Follow-ups
The quest now holds the JS remainder: connection/forward.ts already asks only about watched prefixes, but holds overlapping requests at every peer, so moxygen refuses a broader JS watch and the session turns blind. It needs a signal from the session for when a request is off the wire.
At a draft-14/15 peer without Solicit (raised again in review), a root watch still asks nothing (the empty prefix is illegal there), and the origin reports only the covering prefix, so it also hides narrower watches. Pre-existing; worth a quest if a root-watching client against such a peer matters.
The rust -> js-native-node interop audio cell flaked once with a timestamp gap on moq-lite; worth a quest if it recurs.
Request writes ignore cancellation: every moq-transport request in ietf/subscriber.rs awaits its first message without watching for its end, so a peer withholding send credit pins a cancelled request's state (review). Needs a reset of a partial draft-16+ stream and a plan for the shared draft-14/15 control stream.
The per-open overlap scan in run_namespaces is linear in the session's open requests; Keyed prefix polling covers the per-wake cost of many prefixes.
Drive SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE from the origin's watched prefixes, as moq-lite
does, on every draft. End a request with UNSUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE on drafts
14/15 (prefix-keyed on 14, as the draft says) or by closing its stream.
A peer that did not declare MoQ Solicit never sees overlapping requests.

Draft 14 carries the Track Namespace Prefix, not a request ID; route an
incoming one by prefix in both adapters, and leave the JS overlap fix as
the rest of the quest.

Outcome: Rust moq-transport clients now discover lazily on every draft, end requests with UNSUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE (d14/15) or a stream close (d16+), and never overlap requests at a peer without MoQ Solicit. The red moxygen draft-14 QUIC cell passes from this branch. Kept as a draft for the three decisions in the description; the JS overlap remainder is the rewritten quest.

Walkthrough
Rust IETF sessions now manage namespace requests from active discovery watches. Requests replace narrower requests when the peer does not declare MoQ Solicit, while overlapping requests remain supported when it does. Draft 14 unsubscribe messages use a namespace prefix, and draft 15 messages use a request ID. The Rust adapter orders withdrawals and re-advertisements. Tests and related documentation were updated.

A request discovery closes while its stream open waits on the peer's credit
now drops the open, so it holds no state and never blocks the broader
request that replaced it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Observe cancellation while writing namespace requests
On draft 16+, a peer can grant bidi-stream credit but withhold stream or connection send credit, leaving either write pending indefinitely. Unlike stream opening and response reading, these awaits never poll live, so closing the watch retains the obsolete request, snapshot, and session clone; in exclusive mode its gone handle also prevents a broader replacement from opening. Race request transmission against cancellation too, resetting a partially written native stream when canceled so cleanup does not depend on the peer granting more send credit.
On the Codex review of a6afd36 (cancel the SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE write while the peer withholds send credit): deferring to a follow-up rather than fixing here. Every moq-transport request write in ietf/subscriber.rs (SUBSCRIBE, FETCH, TRACK_STATUS, the namespace request) awaits its first message without watching for cancellation, so fixing only this one would leave the pattern inconsistent. Doing it right also needs a reset of a partially written draft-16+ stream, and a decision for drafts 14/15, whose virtual streams share the ordered control stream and cannot drop half a message. The cost is bounded to state for requests the local app already churned, since a peer that withholds credit on the broader request's stream stalls it anyway. Suggested as a follow-up quest in the PR's summary.
Merging on a6afd36. Codex and maintainer reviews are on this head, no unresolved threads, CI is green. The one deferred finding (request writes ignoring cancellation) is tracked in quest/m1/ietf-request-cancel.md. Wire behavior changes for moq-transport, so I reran just test interop --all on this exact head: 172 passed, 0 failed. quest check against origin/main passed. Auto-merge enabled.
Main no longer writes MIGRATE.md per PR (#6610); the breaking cut writes it from each PR's Impact section.

The control-stream adapter hands each moq-transport request to its own handler, so a
PUBLISH_NAMESPACE that followed a PUBLISH_NAMESPACE_DONE for the same namespace could
be handled first, read as a second advertisement, and hide the replacement: the route
never ended and started again. Asking only about watched prefixes made it routine,
since each request's announcements now interleave on the wire. Hold the
re-advertisement until the withdrawn request's handler drops its stream.

A peer that declared no MoQ Solicit may enforce the drafts' PREFIX_OVERLAP
rule, as moxygen does, and refuse a broader watch held beside a narrower
one, which turned the JS session blind. Mirror Rust (#6530):
- forward.ts runs exclusive discovery at such a peer: a broader request
closes the narrower ones beneath it, watched or lingering.
- The ietf subscriber holds a request until every overlapping request
already closed is off the wire: UNSUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE written on drafts
14/15, the peer's half ended from draft 16 (FIN or CANCELLED reset, then
drain).
- A closed reader stays registered while its request drains, so no
announcement is appended to it.

Quest: IETF lazy discovery. Rewrites it to the JS remainder (see Follow-ups).

A Rust moq-transport client asked for its whole subscribe scope at connect. On drafts 14 and 15 that scope is the empty prefix, which a peer that declared no MoQ Solicit is never asked for (the drafts forbid a zero-field namespace), so

Follow-ups
connection/forward.tsalready asks only about watched prefixes, but holds overlapping requests at every peer, so moxygen refuses a broader JS watch and the session turns blind. It needs a signal from the session for when a request is off the wire.rust -> js-native-nodeinterop audio cell flaked once with a timestamp gap on moq-lite; worth a quest if it recurs.ietf/subscriber.rsawaits its first message without watching for its end, so a peer withholding send credit pins a cancelled request's state (review). Needs a reset of a partial draft-16+ stream and a plan for the shared draft-14/15 control stream.run_namespacesis linear in the session's open requests; Keyed prefix polling covers the per-wake cost of many prefixes.(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
