Problem

Lite group serving clones boxed session and send-group owners for each group. Lite and IETF protocol machines also retain transport parameters solely for mocks after Client/Server already erase the caller's transport.

Approach

  • Borrow the subscription's session and send group during its existing single pending opening. In-flight groups retain only their frame-serving context and independent steering cursor, without another session/group owner or shared lock.
  • Use concrete boxed transport throughout private lite/IETF machines, including the legacy control-stream adapter. Keep mock controls/logs outside protocol state and exercise those same erased boundaries in tests. Concrete types also permit two manual Default implementations to become derives.
  • Add a paired benchmark of the actual Local guard. Keep the safety check: measurements do not demonstrate a material end-to-end cost requiring a production change.

Current consumers are native Client/Server sessions, relay group delivery, and their existing protocol mock harnesses. Completes the quest and removes its links.

Impact

  • Public API: none. No migration or binding changes.
  • Wire: none. Framing, priority updates, stream credit and error registries are preserved.
  • No versions or existing benchmark IDs changed.

Validation

Final source: 9d67265332. Read-only merge-tree integration with current main 4381af6f07e32d594036723f80d298b67e60085f is clean; no rebase or unrelated branch was added.

Nix checks:

  • just ci: PASS, 8,345 default + 517 media + 226 CLI/play test executions (9,088 total; 78 skips), plus selected lint, docs, benchmark and repository gates; 583 quest documents.
  • just rs test -p moq-net: PASS, 3,079 tests including grouped priority updates, pending credit, expiry, cancellation and legacy control-stream behavior.
  • cargo check --locked -p moq-net --no-default-features --all-targets: PASS.
  • just test interop --all: PASS, ending interop: all checks passed. The Linux harness covers Rust, Python, Go, C++, browser/native JS, C and GStreamer; it does not exercise Swift/Kotlin/Dart or hardware paths.

Final-source allocation measurements cover Lite06, Lite07 and IETF controls, both complete-group and paced delivery. Lite saves two allocations per delivered viewer-group in the 16-publisher/16-viewer room (Lite06: 226.4 to 224.4) and one in the 1-publisher/256-viewer fanout (112.8 to 111.8). Paced delivery retains the same savings. IETF control counts are unchanged.

The existing session_delivery_group_cost_cpu cases retain their IDs and sweep independent publisher/viewer counts. Identical six-case settings before/after: Lite06 SUBSCRIBE, 64-byte frames, unconstrained window; 10 samples, 1 s warmup, 2 s measurement. Criterion point estimates per round:

Publishers Viewers Before CPU Final CPU
1 1 38.590 µs 38.417 µs
1 16 318.25 µs 312.78 µs
1 64 1,347.7 µs 1,326.3 µs
16 1 39.343 µs 38.833 µs
16 16 672.61 µs 645.22 µs
16 64 2,554.4 µs 1,723.1 µs

The host was shared with other builds. CPU timing excludes preemption but not hardware contention; the largest baseline was noisy. These results and allocation counts are not a loaded walltime speedup claim.

just bench-runtime 1 2 completed all four workloads across Tokio shared, Tokio workers and actual io_uring workers with the guard enabled. This single shared-host round compares runtimes, not guard ablations; heavy cases report loss and do not establish no-loss capacity or latency performance. Full workload summaries and dirty-source provenance are retained. Subsequent source changes only gate codec-only imports and format code; docs and quest completion do not change the measured runtime path.

The paired local_thread_check benchmark measures a constant-returning transport method directly and through Local: 0.18664 ns direct, 8.9239 ns checked, approximately 8.74 ns added per access here. It excludes I/O and does not attribute workload CPU to the guard. The benchmark runs with the existing worker target and is documented in bench/README.md.

Full logs, source patches, benchmark baselines and runtime metadata remain in the isolated worktree's ignored .scratch/validation/ and .scratch/bench/run.C92sZF/.

Alternatives

Borrow existing transport owners instead of adding a shared lock. Box mocks instead of retaining protocol-wide transport parameters. Keep the checked thread boundary without an unchecked variant. Preserve session-delivery benchmark names and their history.

Follow-ups

None. No public API or ownership decision remains open.

Walkthrough

The change replaces generic session parameters with concrete Transport and boxed stream types across Lite and IETF code. Lite subscription serving also changes its delay and default start-group handling for specified protocol versions. A new benchmark compares a constant-returning transport method directly and through Local, and README and quest documentation is updated.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9d672

On non-Linux systems, the documented command can finish without measuring the guard. Add an explicit refusal when that benchmark is selected; the remaining risk is narrow.
