One range setter for a reader's cursor, plus the bug fixes found while building it. Reshaped after the public-model goal was dropped (moq-dev/moq#6581): an item goes public only with a named consumer outside the sessions, so the serving calls this PR first made public are internal again.

What changed

with_range (JS withRange). One consuming with_range(self, range) -> Self on track::Subscriber, track::Ordered, track::Subscription, and group::Consumer replaces set_groups, with_groups, start_at, raise_start_to, end_at, subscription::Cap, and group::Consumer::set_frames. Both bounds assign, in either direction. Lowering the floor offers the cached groups below the old floor that the reader never read, in every cursor mode (Rust Plain rescans, Rust Resume re-offers on the serving copy, JS re-mirrors from the producer cache). A group still goes out once. Sessions that move a live reader use a crate-private set_range.

Consumers: js/json and js/flate snapshots, js/room chat, moq-hls, moq-mux, moq-archive, moq-json, moq-flate, moq-room, moq-stats, moq-cli, moq-audio, and moq-video, plus the lite and IETF publishers. (The moq-c RawReader the original plan named no longer exists on main.)

Bug fixes, each with a regression test:

  • js/json and js/flate latest() drain the groups the reader already holds and keep the newest, as the Rust consumers do (moq-dev/moq#5677). The old code raised the floor, which dropped the caller's cap, and a datagram past every group left the read waiting forever. This needs a non-blocking ordered read, so Track.Ordered.tryNextGroup(): Group.Consumer | undefined is public, mirroring Rust poll_next_group and the existing Subscriber.tryRecvGroup().
  • An IETF subgroup or lite FETCH serving a group that never held the requested prefix still fails with Lagged; capping the end no longer moves the start past the missing frames.
  • Rust group::Consumer::poll_finished ends cleanly at a with_range frame cap, as reads do. Otherwise a publisher reset a range it had fully served when frames past the cap failed upstream.
  • A closed JS Track.Subscriber keeps when each group it held arrived, so a group read from a copy the resumed reader has let go of still expires at its budget.
  • A JS read no longer holds the consumer's closed open while the frame is written (the pending hold is gone). JS publishers race their writes against an internal expired and against closed settling with an error, replacing hooks.guardGroup; Rust drops the crate-private poll_abandoned the same way.

Internal, as before this PR: Rust track::Subscriber::{poll_start, poll_drop}, group::Consumer::poll_expired (now folding in poll_expired_while_pending), subscription::Position::final_sequence, and Subscription::{start, end, with_start, with_end} are pub(crate). JS Recv, finalSequence, hooks.tryRecvGroup and hooks.groupChanged stay in internal.ts, and Group.Consumer.expired is @internal. Track.Consumer.info() and Track.Subscriber.tryRecvGroup() keep their main shapes.

Quests: finishes quest/m1/api-audit/serve.md (planned by moq-dev/moq#6581). That plan listed Ordered.tryNextGroup as internal, but the maintainer kept it public: the js/json and js/flate fixes need a non-blocking ordered read, and it mirrors Rust track::Ordered::poll_next_group and JS Subscriber.tryRecvGroup(), both already public. Adds JS resume reports drops and Lowered resume floor, follow-ups Codex found here.

Public API and wire impact

  • Breaking in moq-net: track::Subscriber::set_groups, track::Ordered::set_groups, and track::Subscription::with_groups are replaced by the consuming with_range(range) -> Self, and group::Consumer::set_frames by group::Consumer::with_range. To migrate, rebind the reader: subscriber.set_groups(5..) becomes let subscriber = subscriber.with_range(5..);. Both bounds now assign: an omitted start is group 0, where set_groups kept the floor, so pass the floor you want to keep. Lowering the floor offers the cached groups below the old one that the reader never read; a group is still handed out once. To lift a capped reader's cap and read the track's edge, use with_range(floor..) (was set_groups(..)).
  • Breaking in @moq/net: Track.Subscriber.setGroups, withGroups, and their Track.Ordered twins are replaced by withRange(groups), which returns the reader. To migrate, subscriber.setGroups({ end: { excluded: 10 } }) becomes subscriber.withRange({ start: { included: floor }, end: { excluded: 10 } }): an omitted start is group 0, so pass the floor you want to keep. To lift a cap, use withRange({ start: { included: floor } }) (was setGroups({})).
  • Older unreleased MIGRATE.md entries that still name set_groups, with_groups, or setGroups (the largest() bounds entries, the subscriber ranges entry, and "Subscriptions carry group ranges") now mean with_range / withRange; this PR no longer edits MIGRATE.md, so the release cut should carry that rename.
  • Behavior: group::Consumer::finished ends at a with_range frame cap.
  • Additive: Track.Ordered.tryNextGroup() in @moq/net.
  • Wire: none.

Checks

On c26994291428cd08e1113acfa953b7854bee25b6 (merged with main at eaf2422f1d): the queue dropped the previous head because moq-dev/moq#6519 on main added a floor_honors_set_groups test and two doc links naming set_groups. They now use with_range (test renamed floor_honors_with_range). just check: every module passed, including test rs and test js.

On decadbead6ac5cde813c145ed2832e1a6b1d0df6 (merged with main at 5155321baf): just check passed every module on the merge with main at e24ac5a193 (full workspace test rs), then cargo check --workspace --tests and quest check after 5155321baf. A local Codex adversarial review of the track.ts resolution approved it.

On bffc24817f300f61d1f44c0452d614837ec27e41 (merged with main at f52848d634):

  • The merge drops this PR's MIGRATE.md hunks (main now writes MIGRATE.md at the release cut); the migration notes are under Public API and wire impact above.
  • moq-dev/moq#6493 on main keeps a held group's recorded successor so its wall clock outlives the successor's eviction. This PR's closed-subscriber arrivals stay beside it: a closed Track.Subscriber judges a handed-out group by the arrivals kept at close, and a valid recorded successor still wins over a later kept one (#keptSupersededAt). Main's two new tests race group.expired instead of the removed hooks.guardGroup, and its Rust tests call the folded poll_expired.
  • just check: every module passed, including test rs and test js.

Earlier:

On 5f0380f10e (merged with main at 60ba42adc4):

  • just fix: clean.
  • just check: every module passed (js, rs, quest, drill, markdown, shell, toml, nix, justfile, gh), including test rs (8404, 519 and 226 passed) and test js (@moq/net 2717).
  • quest check --base origin/main: clean.
  • Regression tests that fail without their fix: tryNextGroup abandons the frame helpers' group when it passes it (@moq/net) and a_group_missing_its_prefix_fails (moq-net IETF publisher).
  • just test interop --all not run: no wire or moq-ffi change.

One consuming with_range builder on track::Subscriber, track::Ordered,
group::Consumer, and Subscription assigns the floor and cap. poll_start,
poll_drop, group::Consumer::poll_expired, Position::final_sequence, and
Subscription::{start, end, with_start, with_end} are public. poll_live and
latest_sequence wait on the track-live quest; Consumer::final_sequence on
the deferred quest.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Mirror the Rust with_range in @moq/net: withRange replaces setGroups,
withGroups, and hooks.replaceGroups, assigning both bounds and re-offering
unread cached groups below a lowered floor. tryRecvGroup returns the Recv
union with a public groupChanged wake, Ordered gains tryNextGroup, and
finalSequence and Track.Consumer.info({ hold }) are public, so the lite and
IETF publishers drop their hooks. The json and flate snapshot consumers
drain held groups instead of raising the floor, keeping the caller's cap.

Narrow the serve quest to the JS group expiry decision, move the live-edge
answers to track-live, and add MIGRATE entries for both packages.

Group.Consumer.expired settles with the Old error once the subscription's
budget gives up on a group, even after every frame was read, mirroring the
Rust poll_expired. It watches the budget only while raced, so a race per
write leaks nothing. The lite and IETF publishers race their writes against
it, and hooks.guardGroup, hooks.readGroupFrame, and ReadGroupFrame go away.

A read no longer holds the consumer's closed open while the frame is
written: expired already judges a group read whole, and holding closed on
every read would hang a reader that stops at the last frame without a
trailing read.

serve.md keeps the one serving item left, the crate-private Rust
poll_abandoned that #6140 added.

Walkthrough

The change replaces mutable group-bound APIs with range-based builders across JavaScript and Rust. Ordered readers now support non-blocking group access, cached-group reoffering, and observable expiry. Lite and IETF publishers use group-aware write cancellation and updated cursor handling. Snapshot consumers read ordered groups and preserve exclusive range limits. Tests and integrations were updated for the new APIs.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to bffc2

Latest snapshot reads may wait despite an available value, and both migration examples may reopen cached groups when lifting a cap. Resolve or explicitly accept these risks before merging.

A cut group is handed out with its error since #6143, so lowering the
floor re-offers it like any other cached group. A reader that closed
itself stays closed: withRange no longer refills its buffer.

Merged main again (it had gone CONFLICTING) and addressed a fresh Codex review of the merged head.

Merge resolution (against moq-dev/moq#6143 and moq-dev/moq#6183):

Codex findings, both fixed in 08a0c34:

  • Lowering a JS reader's floor skipped cached cut groups. Since feat(lite): readers see SUBSCRIBE_DROP and cut groups end with their error #6143 a cut is handed out with its error, so a widened reader silently lost it. It is now re-offered like a fresh sink gets it. Rust already did this; I checked with a probe.
  • withRange on a JS reader that had closed itself refilled its buffer, so a closed or aborted reader handed out groups again. A self-closed reader now offers nothing, while a producer's clean close still leaves the cache re-offerable.
  • Each fix has a regression test that fails without it. Codex approved the fix commit.

Checks: just check against origin/main passed lint, JS check, clippy, and quest. nix flake check then failed only on the runner-image user-namespace limit (unshare: write failed /proc/self/uid_map), so I ran the remaining steps by hand: ts-paths, markdown, shell, taplo, gh, Rust tests (8061 passed, plus 516 and 224), and every affected JS workspace (0 fail). The Rust tests ran with moq-dev/moq#6223's fixture fix applied locally; it is not committed here. One run hit the known redundant_importers_switch_through_bufferbloat_on_lite_07 flake (quest), and it passed on the rerun.

Resolve against #6206 and #6214:
- The lite publisher keeps #6206's held first group and pre-START skipped
  drops, reading through the public `tryRecvGroup({ drops: emitRange })` and
  raising the floor to the resolved `startSequence`.
- `hooks.sourceStart` (#6206) stays private, pending serve.md, as the JS
  counterpart of the now-public `poll_start`.
- `hooks.guardGroup` returns for #6214's parked group opens only:
  `Group.Consumer.expired` covers the budget, not eviction. Its public shape
  joins `poll_abandoned` in serve.md.
- model-markers follows a `hooks` read split across lines.

Merged main again: the PR left the merge queue on a conflict. Merge commit: 6d7bdf39d0.

Merge resolution (against moq-dev/moq#6206 and moq-dev/moq#6214):

Checks: just check passes for js, rs, and quest. The flake module fails locally only because the sandbox refuses unshare while building github-runner. The js/net tests pass (2498), including parked-expiry.test.ts.

Open: the Codex P2 on 08a0c34 arrived after the PR was queued and has no answer yet: "Keep the recovery lease through in-flight frame writes" (thread). It looks real. Subscriber.close() clears the timeline and aborts the wall timer. A resumed group's expiry is staleAt(copy.sub, …), so if the replaced copy is released once closed settles and then closed, expired never settles while the write is still blocked. That reopens the "drop the hold" amendment to decision 6, so it is left for the maintainer.

Not re-queued. The fresh Codex review of 6d7bdf39d0 found a second P2 on the same theme (review). In-flight header and frame writes now race only group.expired, which settles for Old but never for eviction's TooFarBehind. A stream blocked by flow control can therefore outlive its eviction. The old guardGroup path and Rust poll_abandoned both cover that case.

Together with the earlier P2 (recovery lease released before a blocked write finishes), both findings reopen decision 6 and its amendment, so the maintainer decides how to proceed.

(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)

Keep #6209's datagram identity set beside the reader's `with_range` bounds,
and its `MAX_DATAGRAMS` in internal.ts, where `finalSequence` already left
for the public `track.ts` export.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A publisher writing a group now stops once `expired` settles or `closed`
fails (Rust: `poll_expired`, or `poll_finished` erring), so an eviction of
what it has yet to read resets a stream blocked on flow control. Racing
`expired` alone missed it.

- Delete JS `hooks.guardGroup` and Rust `group::Consumer::poll_abandoned`.
  Both publishers share a session-side helper over the public calls.
- Rust `poll_finished` ends cleanly at a `with_range` frame cap, as reads do,
  so a served range is not reset when frames past it fail upstream.
- A closed JS subscriber keeps its groups' arrival times, so a group read
  from a copy the resumed reader let go of still expires at its budget.
- serve.md drops the settled abandonment decision, leaving JS `sourceStart`.

Implemented amendment 2 to decision 6 in 5fa2d1734f, after merging main again in 1f01599c36 to pick up #6209's datagram identities. The PR description has the details.

  • No new names. Publishers give up a group they are still writing once expired settles or closed fails. In Rust that is poll_expired or a failing poll_finished. JS guardGroup and Rust poll_abandoned are deleted.
  • Rust poll_finished ends cleanly at a with_range frame cap.
  • A closed JS subscriber keeps when each group arrived, so a released copy's groups still expire.
  • serve.md is cut down to JS sourceStart.

The maintainer kept JS Track.Ordered.tryNextGroup() public, mirroring Rust
track::Ordered::poll_next_group and Subscriber.tryRecvGroup(), since the
js/json and js/flate latest() fixes need a non-blocking ordered read.
Everything else the quest named stays internal, so this PR finishes it.

- Around line 339-340: Update the cfg gate on Subscription::with_start so the
method is available when either the async feature is enabled or tests are being
compiled, allowing its unit test to compile without default features.

… fatal

with_range also moved the start, which clamps up past a prefix the group
never held, so an IETF subgroup or lite FETCH could serve a group's tail
as the whole group instead of failing with Lagged. Both now set only the
end, as main's end_at did.

Also gate Subscription::with_start on test like its siblings, since its
unit test calls it.

Merging. Summary of this pass, after the maintainer chose to keep Track.Ordered.tryNextGroup() public:

  • Decision: tryNextGroup() stays public. It mirrors Rust track::Ordered::poll_next_group and JS Subscriber.tryRecvGroup(), and the js/json and js/flate latest() fixes need a non-blocking ordered read. With that settled, this PR finishes quest/m1/api-audit/serve.md, so the quest is deleted (f62f146).
  • Fixed:
    • tryNextGroup abandons the frame helpers' passed group, as nextGroup does (70535be).
    • The IETF subgroup and lite FETCH caps set only the end, so a group missing its requested prefix still fails with Lagged (370dbcb).
    • The MIGRATE examples lift a cap without dropping the floor, and with_start's cfg gate matches its siblings (d4bee30).
  • Declined: the doc/concept request (the serving items are internal again), and holding a superseded group in latest() (a newer group restarts from a snapshot, as on main and in Rust).
  • Merged main twice, at e45064e and 60ba42a. The second merge took perf(net): borrow group transports and erase private parameters #6539's non-generic transports, and the first dropped the private: markers quest: plan moq-net API audit follow-ups and retire the public-model goal #6581 retired.
  • Checks: just check passed every module, quest check --base origin/main is clean, and Codex found no issues on 5f0380f10e.

Main's #6493 keeps a held group's recorded successor so its wall clock
outlives the successor's eviction, and drops #isStale's timeline identity
check. This branch keeps the arrivals a closed subscriber held. Both stay:
a closed subscriber judges by its kept arrivals, and a valid recorded
successor still wins over a later kept one. Main's two new guardGroup tests
race group.expired instead, as hooks.guardGroup is gone here.

@codex review

The merge of main at bffc24817f combines this PR's closed-subscriber arrivals with #6493's held-successor record in js/net/src/track.ts (#staleAt, #keptSupersededAt). Please check that combination.

Codex adversarial review (local codex-companion adversarial-review, branch diff against 5f0380f10e, focused on the js/net/src/track.ts merge resolution at bffc24817f): approve. "No material flaw found in the merge resolution. Saved arrivals and recorded successors preserve held-group expiry across close and eviction." It also ran the 297 track and resume tests plus targeted deadline probes.
