refactor(net)!: keep session-only model items private - #6747
moq-dev/moq#6111 made model items public so a third party could build its own publisher, subscriber, or relay from the public model. The maintainer dropped that goal (2026-10-23): the public model serves applications (publish, subscribe, answer on demand), and an item goes public only for a named consumer. This completes and deletes quest/m1/api-audit/model-private.md.
Changes
Rust track::Producer::{received, close}, track::Request::{request_start, stage}, and track::Staged are pub(crate). Public docs no longer link them.
group::Producer::info() is deleted rather than made pub(crate): it duplicated Deref<Target = Info>, and its three internal callers read the field through the deref.
The tail bench marks its received copy through the hidden fuzz module (moq_net::fuzz::received), as it did before refactor(net)!: public ingest #6111, and now requires the fuzz feature.
JS Track.Request.stage, Track.Staged, and Track.Producer.dropGroups are gone from the public API. The IETF subscriber stages through the internal hooks.stageRequest(request, info), which returns { producer, commit() }; drops go through hooks.dropTrackGroups again. Request.accept keeps its close-on-refusal behavior.
The unreleased refactor(net)!: public ingest #6111 sections in rs/moq-net/MIGRATE.md and js/net/MIGRATE.md that describe the reverted items are dropped or trimmed.
Quest links to the deleted quest are replaced with this PR, and the duplicate stage/Staged bullet in ietf-private.md is removed.
Choices made unattended
Rust track::Producer::drop_groups stays public. The quest listed it, but moq-dev/moq#6262 landed after the quest was written, and moq-archive's archive::Consumer calls it to mark groups below a stored end as skipped. That makes it a named consumer under the quest's own rule. JS dropGroups has no consumer outside the sessions, so it goes internal. That leaves an asymmetry until a JS archive consumer exists.
The JS dispose path is gone.Staged[Symbol.dispose] had no consumer (the IETF subscriber never used using), so the internal staged handle only commits. Its two tests are removed, and the commit test now runs through the hook.
Impact
Public API, Rust (moq-net, main-only, never on release): removed track::Producer::{received, close}, track::Request::{request_start, stage}, track::Staged, group::Producer::info. No migration needed: none of them shipped. The cut should drop refactor(net)!: public ingest #6111's MIGRATE entries for them; this PR already removes them from MIGRATE.md.
Public API, JS (@moq/net, main-only): removed Track.Request.stage, Track.Staged, Track.Producer.dropGroups.
Wire: none.
Checks
just check: JS check and Rust check (lint, clippy, docs) passed. nix flake check failed on this machine's user-namespace limit (unshare: write failed /proc/self/uid_map), which has nothing to do with this PR, and that failure cancelled the test phase. So the test phase was run by hand on the same diff:
just rs test-changed: 8867 passed.
just js test-changed: all passed, @moq/net 2838.
cargo check -p moq-net --benches --features fuzz, taplo format --check, sh/markdown.sh check, and quest check --base origin/main passed.
Not run: just test interop --all (no wire or moq-ffi change).
No actionable bugs found. Keeping session-only operations private follows the intended application-facing API boundary. Retaining Rust drop_groups is justified by its moq-archive caller, while the JS internal hooks preserve staging and drop behavior. Removing the unused staged-disposal API simplifies the implementation without losing the subscriber's existing rejection cleanup. The tail benchmark's feature requirement matches the nightly invocation.
Verification: static review of the changed code, surrounding JS acceptance/error cleanup, package exports, archive caller and benchmark configuration. I did not run builds, tests or interop checks, or verify downstream consumers outside this repository.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Walkthrough
JavaScript request staging and group-drop reporting now use internal hooks, and the corresponding public APIs are removed. Rust track APIs have narrower visibility, and the group info accessor is removed. The tail benchmark uses a fuzz helper to mark receipt. Migration guides and API audit documents are updated, including a JavaScript note about frameless groups and staleness.

Explanation
The title "refactor(net)!: keep session-only model items private" matches the main change. The PR narrows Rust and JavaScript model APIs by making session-only items crate-private or internal and removing public JS staging and drop APIs. The title is specific and concise, and it follows conventional commit style. It does not name every change, such as the tail bench or the migration notes, which is acceptable.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description states the problem, which is the public model items added by #6111 and the maintainer's decision to drop that goal. It lists the Rust and JS API changes, the tail bench change, the migration note and quest updates, the internal hook changes, the tests run, and the wire impact. The description matches the changeset closely.

Merged origin/main again (486a34f). Mechanical resolution: fuzz.rs keeps both received (this PR) and fill_groups (main); ietf/subscriber.rs takes main's rewritten recv_group_fetch_objects, which no longer reads the producer's sequence that this PR had changed. just check passes locally.
Dropped from the queue on a main conflict, so merged main again (1121f9c). The only conflict was the generated js/net/api/index.api.md, regenerated by just fix. After the merge, --no-default-features clippy flagged track::Producer::close, track::Producer::received and track::Request::request_start as dead without async, so they take the same cfg_attr(not(feature = "async"), allow(dead_code)) as their async-only neighbors. just check passes locally.
No actionable bugs found in this update. Compared with my previous review (e697ee2), accounting for main merges and the previously checked equivalent head, the new PR-specific change is the no-async dead-code allowances on track::Producer::{close, received} and track::Request::request_start (rs/moq-net/src/model/track.rs:2978, 3067, 7563). These narrowly address the reported no-default-features lint failure without changing runtime behavior or reopening the public API. Matching the neighboring feature-conditional allowances is simpler than adding feature-specific implementations.
The application-facing API direction remains sound; my previous review had no open findings. The separate MIGRATE.md finding was withdrawn and its thread resolved, so I am not repeating it.
Verification: static inspection of the update, base-relative changes, generated API report and surrounding feature-gating conventions. I did not run builds, clippy, tests or interop checks; the reported local check result was not independently reproduced.
Merged main again (4647410) for a quest-only conflict: the api-audit README keeps main's new "Encoded consumers read gaps and ends" entry and drops this quest's own line, and model-private.md stays deleted since this PR completes it. No code changed since the reviewed 1121f9c. just check passes locally.
dropGroups became package-internal in #6747, so the snapshot test ends
the group a reader is on with an OLD close instead.
