Works on quest/m1/api-audit/lifecycle.md: each lifecycle word means one thing on every model handle, and Rust and JS observers fire at the same time. Everything but @moq/e2ee is done here, and the quest now covers only that package.

Summary

  • finish() / finish_at(end) declare a clean end and are not terminal. JS gains Track.Producer.finish().
  • abort(err) is terminal. On a group, an abort after finish only releases the cache: readers keep the clean end and no cut is recorded.
  • closed() on group and track producers and their demand handles resolves once the outcome is final:
    • a finished group;
    • a track whose declared end was reached with every group below it finished. Rust now waits for open groups below the end, as JS does, and JS counts a received end's owed tail before settling;
    • or an abort.
A settled end is final: a late group below it or a later abort leaves the clean outcome.
An evicted group below the end no longer holds it open, in JS as in Rust.
Rust latches a clean outcome once closed() reports it, so a later subscription asking for a longer tail grace cannot reopen it.
Rust returns Result<()>, JS returns Error | null. Sessions that need abort-only use a private poll_aborted (Rust) or a private release hook (JS).
  • close() (JS) on a consumer releases only that handle, for groups, announcements, and broadcasts:
    • On a shared group or announce consumer, it also ends that handle's own parked reads (readFrame()/readable(), next()), and the group's done/isClosed reflect it. A later abort of the group leaves its reads clean.
    • Announce.Consumer.close() no longer closes the shared queue. Announce.Producer.wanted (a Getter<boolean>) turns false once the last consumer closes. Each session (lite, IETF, origin, pool, reload) watches it and closes its producer, which cancels the request.
    • The last Broadcast.Consumer.close() no longer closes a produced broadcast; only its producer does. The origin closes a superseded broadcast, or one its origin or scope released, explicitly. Tracks already subscribed keep serving until they end.
    • A session's broadcast has no producer, so it still ends once its last handle closes, as Rust sessions do with close_unheld.
  • Listing: a broadcast closing reports a track whose producer finished but is still open as finished, as the Rust listing does.
  • Rust track::Producer::close(), crate-private since moq-dev/moq#6747, is folded into abort. A session closing locally aborts its copies with Stream(Session(Cancel)), which resume.rs and the origin still map to a dead route, not an end.
  • Rust track::Producer::end() is renamed finished().
  • Other JS changes:
    • Lister.ended is renamed closed.
    • Group and broadcast Demand.unused() reject on close.
    • Subscriber.end() and Ordered.end() are removed.
  • Finish.closed no longer applies: Finish was removed in moq-dev/moq#6660.

Impact

  • Public API (moq-net, breaking):
    • closed()/poll_closed() on group::{Producer, Demand} and track::{Producer, Demand} return Result<()>. Match on the outcome. A track's resolves only once every cached group below its end finished.
    • A session's copy closed locally now ends its readers with Stream(Session(Cancel)) instead of a clean end.
    • track::Producer::end is renamed finished.
  • Public API (@moq/net, breaking):
    • Group.Producer.close(abort?) and Track.Producer.close(abort?) become finish() and abort(err).
    • Track.Producer.close() now releases the producer. It aborts with Cancel unless an end was declared, so replace track.close() with track.finish(); track.close().
    • Group.Consumer.close() and Announce.Consumer.close() take no error and release only that handle.
    • Announce.Producer.wanted is new. A hand-made announcement producer watches it instead of closed.
    • The last Broadcast.Consumer.close() no longer closes a produced broadcast. Close the producer.
    • A broadcast created on an origin closes when it is superseded or its origin or scope closes, even while a consumer handle holds it.
    • Lister.ended is now closed.
    • Demand.unused() rejects on close.
    • Subscriber.end() and Ordered.end() are removed; await finished() instead.
  • Migration: both MIGRATE.md files have an entry.
  • Wire: none.

Decisions

  1. Announce.Consumer.close(abort?) closed the shared announcement queue. The wire layer used it as the reader's cancel.
    • Keep one reader per queue and document close() as cancel.
    • Count consumers and have the session watch a producer unused(). (decided first, then superseded)
    • ✅ Count consumers; close() releases only that consumer, and the session watches a wanted-shaped producer signal, matching quest/m1/api-audit/wanted.md (wanted()/wanted_changed()). (maintainer, 2026-10-25, from issuecomment-6400649405)
  2. The last Broadcast.Consumer.close() closed the broadcast, including a producer's. The origin relied on it for superseded broadcasts.
    • Keep this behavior only for wire-owned broadcasts.
    • Keep the producer open and have publishers, including the origin, watch demand().unused(). (decided first, then superseded)
    • ✅ Keep the producer open. Broadcast.Producer.demand() stays internal, since moq-dev/moq#6744 deletes broadcast::Demand, and the origin closes superseded or released producers explicitly. (maintainer, 2026-10-25, same comment)

The first round implemented the earlier picks: Announce.Producer.unused(), a public Broadcast.Producer.demand(), and demand-based retirement in the origin. This head replaces them with the newer ones. The demand-based retirement path is deleted, which also retires the Codex finding about its microtask-lagged used check.

Choices made

  • JS Announce.Producer.wanted is a Getter<boolean>, the @moq/net form of wanted()/wanted_changed(), matching Track.Demand.wanted: peek() is the snapshot and changed() the wait. The sessions share a private closeUnwanted helper.
  • JS Track.Producer.close() acts like a Rust drop. It is clean when an end was declared and otherwise aborts with a Cancel stream error. The private releaseTrack hook keeps its clean-without-end meaning, so JS resume and origin are unchanged. A wire copy released without a publisher end (an idle unsubscribe, a covered lite-07 range, an unwanted track-info lookup) also goes through releaseTrack, so only a received end is ever declared.
  • JS Track.Producer.finish() is a no-op once an end is declared or the track is closed, so cleanup paths can always call it.
  • JS wire and fan-out code that relied on the old "closed means released" behavior now reads it through private hooks: trackReleased, trackFinished, demandReleased, subscriberEnd, and releaseGroupReader. They are not part of the public API.
  • Demand.unused() rejects with the abort error, or with a generic "closed" error after a clean close, matching Rust's Dropped. moq-dev/moq#6798 replaces unused() with wanted everywhere, so this is not built on further here.
  • A session's broadcast (no producer) still ends once its last handle closes. This is the JS form of the Rust sessions' poll_unheld / close_unheld, so a session never holds a broadcast nobody reads.
  • Ordering with moq-dev/moq#6744 and moq-dev/moq#6798: neither needs to land first. refactor(net)!: drop moq-net exports without a consumer #6744 deletes the Rust broadcast::Demand and does not touch the JS broadcast, which stays internal here. quest: audit the tree and record the 2026-10-25 decisions #6798 only adds the quest, whose Required links to this quest file, and that file stays.
  • Origin and session tests that asserted the old semantics now assert the decided ones:
    • A superseded or released broadcast closes at once, and its subscribed tracks keep serving.
    • A late answer the origin refuses is a session-style broadcast (SessionBroadcast in mock.ts), which shows its release by closing.

Checks

  • just check passed, except the Dart binding freshness check: the local generator predates main's nix/uniffi-dart-duration-negative.patch, and the committed bindings are unchanged from main.
  • Merging main needed three fixes:
    • Main's PREFIX_OVERLAP gate (moq-dev/moq#6714) sees a request as leaving once its producer closes. Closing the last consumer now closes the producer a turn later, so the gate also treats an unwanted request as leaving.
    • The private Fill::poll_closed only watches for an abort, so it is renamed poll_aborted.
    • The new feature-shape gate builds moq-net without async: a doc link to the async-only closed() and the session-only poll_aborted are fixed for that shape.
  • Merging main again (after the queue removed it on a conflict) needed:
    • moq-dev/moq#6747 made track::Producer::close crate-private and removed JS Staged and Track.Producer.dropGroups. This PR still deletes the Rust close; the JS staged commit and hooks.dropTrackGroups callers use abort.
    • moq-dev/moq#6740's moq-ffi and moq-c track teardown reads finished() instead of end().
    • moq-dev/moq#6717's new test ends groups with finish() and its track with finish(); close().
  • Merging main a third time (after the queue removed it on a conflict) needed:
    • moq-dev/moq#6807 ends a lite-07 subscription that fell short of its widened demand with an error: it now aborts the track with that error, and otherwise finishes and releases it. Its release checks read the private trackReleased hook.
    • moq-dev/moq#6820's new snapshot test aborts its dropped group with abort instead of close(err).
  • Merging main a fourth time (after the queue removed it on a conflict) needed:
    • moq-dev/moq#6816 refuses an unanswered epochless subscription through a shared retirer: it aborts the track with abort instead of close(err).
    • moq-dev/moq#6851 builds the model tests without async, so abort_after_finish_keeps_the_clean_outcome reads its group with poll_read_frame.
    • moq-dev/moq#6794's committed API reports are regenerated.
    • moq-dev/moq#6781 added a rs/moq-net/MIGRATE.md entry beside this PR's; both are kept.
    • moq-dev/moq#6815's IETF range updates: its new tests, bench, and interop script finish their group producers and finish tracks before closing them, and a group excluded by a range update releases its reader with the private releaseGroupReader hook instead of close(err).
    • moq-dev/moq#6900's new flate decoder bench finishes its oversized group and track.
  • just test interop --all passed after the fourth merge.

Follow-ups

  • @moq/e2ee still wraps the old Group.Producer.close(abort?) and Track.Producer.close(abort?). Mirroring the finish/abort split there is the quest's remaining work.

finish() declares the end without closing, abort(err) is terminal, and
close() releases the handle like a Rust drop: clean with a declared end,
otherwise a Cancel abort. Producer.closed and Demand.closed now settle on
the outcome, including a reached and settled end; the wire layer watches
the release through private hooks.

Lister.ended is renamed closed. Group and broadcast Demand.unused now
reject once the handle closes, as Rust's do, instead of reading a closed
handle as unused. Subscriber.end() and Ordered.end() are removed: readers
await finished(); publishers read the snapshot through a private hook.

A consume() handle shares the producer's state, so its close() ended the
group for every reader. close() now takes no error and releases only this
handle: a shared handle ends its own reads, a mirror closes its own copy.
Wire and track fan-out fail a reader's copy through a private hook.

moq-audio's capture logs a finished track's Ok outcome, the drain and

the JS consumers whose close() still ends shared state.

P2 Badge Wake pending reads when releasing a shared group consumer

When a consumer returned by Producer.consume() is already awaiting readFrame() or readable(), closing it only sets #released and #verdict. Neither wakes #changed(), which watches the shared frames and closed signals, so the pending operation remains blocked until the producer writes or finishes, potentially forever. This is reproducible with an empty open group: start consumer.readFrame(), then call consumer.close(). Include a per-reader release signal in the parked read's wake sources without closing the shared producer state.

Fixed in b91d74b. A parked read now also wakes on the handle's own verdict, so close() on a shared consumer ends a pending readFrame() or readable(). done and isClosed now count the release. Test: "closing a consumer ends its own parked reads", which also checks that another consumer on the same producer keeps reading.

P2 Badge Wait for unfinished groups before reporting a clean track outcome

If a track has an open group below its declared end, is_complete() can already be true because it checks whether the sequence boundary was reached, not whether those groups finished. For example, append an open group and call finish_at(Position::group(1)): poll_closed() immediately returns Ok(()), although subsequently aborting the track can make it return an error. This reports success before the promised final outcome is known and can prematurely stop callers such as audio capture that terminate on track.closed(). Use the settled-end condition and watch unfinished groups so closure resolves only after their outcomes are known.

Fixed in b91d74b. Once the end is reached, poll_outcome now waits for each cached group below it to finish, with the waiter parked on that group, before it returns Ok. This matches the JS #settled check. An abort first gives the error, and an abort after the end settled still keeps Ok. Test: closed_waits_for_open_groups_below_the_end.

Reviewed commit: cc16ff9

[P2] Wake parked reads when releasing a shared group consumer — js/net/src/group.ts:1047–1053. For producer.consume(), close() changes only #released/#verdict and leaves producer state open. Pending readFrame()/readable() waits in #changed(), which observes frames and producer closure, not the reader verdict. Thus c=p.consume(); pending=c.readFrame(); c.close(); await pending hangs with an idle producer. Include per-reader release in that wait; test both pending methods while another consumer remains usable. Make done/isClosed account for release too.

Separating completion, abort and handle release is sensible; private session hooks preserve completion versus transport lifetime. Cancellation wake-up needs fixing.

Verification: static core JS/Rust group/track, announcement/broadcast ownership, retirement and session adaptation inspection. No tests, builds or interop runs.

…ed reader's parked read

Rust track closed() resolved Ok as soon as the declared end was reached, while a
group below it was still open and could abort. It now waits for those groups to
finish, as JS does. JS Group.Consumer.close() on a shared handle now wakes its
own parked readFrame()/readable(), and done/isClosed reflect the release.

Walkthrough

The change separates clean completion, abort, and resource release across JavaScript and Rust stream APIs. It updates track and group outcome reporting, consumer-handle release, broadcast demand handling, and network lifecycle paths. It also updates callers, tests, examples, bindings, and migration notes to use the revised operations and accessors.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 78697

The remaining issues are a misleading error description and a narrow case where track-completion observers can disagree. Correct them before merging if consistent lifecycle outcomes are required; otherwise they are bounded follow-up risks.

Update the stale Subscriber::finished doc.

The doc says a local session close without a declared end returns Error::Closed. This change removed that path. TrackState::poll_finished no longer maps a sealed track without an end to Error::Closed. A local session close now aborts the track with StreamError::Session(SessionError::Cancel). poll_finished then returns that abort error.

Update the sentence so it matches the new behavior.

Wait for group completion without a timer.

settle() waits through setTimeout(0) even though this test needs only the group-closure callback to run. Await group.closed instead. That keeps the assertion tied to the event it checks rather than timer scheduling.

As per coding guidelines, “Unit tests mock time instead of depending on wall-clock timing or sleeps.”

Maintainer decisions (2026-10-25):

  1. Announce.Consumer.close(): count consumers. close() releases only this consumer, and the session watches a wanted-shaped producer signal, not a new unused().
  2. Last Broadcast.Consumer.close(): the producer stays open. broadcast::Demand is deleted (moq-dev/moq#6744), so publishers do not watch demand; the origin closes a superseded producer explicitly.
  3. unused() is going away: the m1 quest api-audit/wanted in moq-dev/moq#6798 replaces every used/unused with wanted()/wanted_changed(). Don't invest in Demand.unused() rejecting on close.

The independently reported released-reader inconsistency #6750 (comment) is addressed: shared-handle release now takes precedence over a subsequent producer abort for pending and future reads, matching its already-final clean closed outcome. Owned mirrors retain their buffered-drain/error behavior. The regression test covers both parked and later reads.

This is a focused ordering correction consistent with independent handle release; no additional lifecycle machinery is needed. No new actionable bugs identified.

Verification: static review of the two-file fix and surrounding release, buffer and wake-up paths, accounting for the previously inspected equivalent main merges since abc3b97. Tests/builds were not run.

Splitting close() mapped the wire copies' clean release to finish() and
close(), which declares an end at the received count. A covered lite-07
range, an idle unsubscribe, or an unwanted track-info lookup is a
released copy, not finished content, so it releases through the private
releaseTrack hook, keeping only an end the publisher declared.

The existing false-end findings in IETF #6750 (comment) and lite #6750 (comment) are addressed. Idle/copy release now preserves only a publisher-declared end, including covered lite-07 ranges and abandoned info lookups; revocation and uncovered-range failures still abort. The strengthened bounded-range test checks that clean subscription closure does not imply finished content.

Reusing the existing private release hook is the simpler, consistent direction. No new actionable bugs identified in this update; the previous released-reader fix is unchanged.

Verification: static comparison against fd1cc05, inspecting the four-file delta and surrounding release/termination logic. Tests/builds were not run; unrelated review threads were not reassessed.

Requeue summary after the merge_conflict removal:

  • Merged main twice (no rebase). The one conflict was moq-dev/moq#6807's covered bounded lite-07 subscription in js/net/src/lite/subscriber.ts: a short subscription aborts with its error, and its release checks read the private trackReleased hook. moq-dev/moq#6820's new snapshot test aborts its dropped group with abort.
  • fd1cc05 (Codex): a released shared group consumer ignores a later producer abort.
  • b4f093a (CodeRabbit): an idle unsubscribe, a covered lite-07 range, or an unwanted track-info lookup releases its copy via releaseTrack instead of finish(); close(), so no end is declared that the publisher never sent. The Rust Fill::Ready finding was declined: the track abort already aborts the fill head with the session error.
  • just check passed except the Dart binding freshness check (local generator predates main's patch; committed bindings match main). just test interop --all passed on the final head.

The no-async test-build correction is appropriate: abort_after_finish_keeps_the_clean_outcome is unconditional, while read_frame() requires the async feature. Using poll_read_frame() retains both immediate-ready assertions without excluding the regression test from no-async builds. This is simpler than feature-gating the test.

No new actionable bugs identified. The prior false-end and released-reader fixes remain unchanged.

Verification: static base-aware comparison against b4f093a, separating the main merge from the test correction and checking the read API feature gates. Tests/builds were not run.

P2 Badge Settle the track outcome after cache eviction

If group 0 remains open, group 1 finishes, and finish() declares end 2, the outcome correctly stays pending initially. However, when the idle-cache timer evicts group 0, #prune() removes the last unfinished group without calling #settle(). The eviction also bypasses the settlement callbacks because it is an error classified as a hole. Consequently, producer.closed and demand.closed remain pending indefinitely even though #settled() now returns true and no further writes are needed. Reevaluate the outcome after pruning changes the cached groups.

Fixed in 9a856aa. #prune() now re-checks the outcome when it evicts anything, so evicting the last open group below the declared end settles closed cleanly. This matches Rust, where poll_outcome is parked on that group, wakes on its eviction, and returns Ok once the slot leaves the lookup. Test: "closed settles once the cache evicts the last open group below the end". It fails without the fix.

(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)

…n group below the end

A prune that evicts the open group holding the end back now re-checks the outcome, as the Rust poll_outcome does once the evicted slot leaves its lookup.

The existing JS eviction-settlement finding #6750 (comment) is addressed: pruning now rechecks the outcome after replacing the cache, so removing the last unfinished group below the end settles closed. The manual-clock regression covers this path. Reusing #settle is a focused correction without new lifecycle machinery; the decoder benchmark also now finishes its data before releasing it.

No new actionable bugs identified in this delta. The separate, unchanged Rust clean-outcome latch finding remains open: #6750 (comment). A larger subscriber budget can reopen tail grace after poll_outcome returned success; referencing the existing finding rather than duplicating it.

Verification: static base-aware comparison against fc8b671, inspecting pruning/settlement and benchmark changes separately from main merges. Tests/builds were not run.

A received copy's tail grace is judged when polled, so a later subscription with a longer max delay could reopen an end closed() already reported, and an abort within it turned it into an error. poll_outcome now latches the clean outcome it returns, as JS does by settling before a subscription change.

The prior Rust clean-outcome latch finding is fixed: #6750 (comment). In rs/moq-net/src/model/track.rs:2534–2553, poll_outcome now latches shared success after its completion and unfinished-group checks, so a longer subscriber grace or subsequent abort cannot reverse an outcome already reported by Producer or Demand. The new regression covers the longer-grace/abort sequence.

No new actionable bugs identified in this delta. The monotonic atomic flag is a focused way to preserve the existing read-guard APIs without adding a separate lifecycle or blocking wider reader subscriptions.

Verification: static comparison against 3f1a00c; the base is unchanged. Inspected shared outcome callers, reader completion and the regression. Tests/builds were not run.

Requeueing after the merge_conflict removal. Since b4f093a:

  • Merged main three times. Conflicts and semantic breaks were resolved by aligning with what landed:
  • Fixed two review findings, each with a test that fails without the fix:
    • JS: a cache prune now settles the outcome once it evicts the last open group below the end.
    • Rust: poll_outcome latches a clean outcome once reported, so a longer tail grace can't reopen it.
  • Declined a CodeRabbit suggestion to propagate @moq/room snapshot failures, because it changes behavior outside this PR's scope. CodeRabbit withdrew it.
  • just check passed on every selected lane; swift skips locally without a toolchain. just test interop --all passed 173 of 173.
