fix(net)!: bound paths to the moq-transport namespace limit - #6927
A valid local path could exceed moq-transport's 4096-byte namespace limit (Path::MAX_BYTES was 16 KiB). Both publishers advertised it, so a strict Draft 18/22 peer closed the session or namespace stream and lost healthy siblings. The same held for a Full Track Name: a namespace plus track name over 4096 bytes was sent, and the peer had to close the session.
Approach
Make the bound unrepresentable instead of skipping it at send time:
Path::MAX_BYTES (Rust) and Path.MAX_BYTES (JS) drop from 16384 to 4096. A namespace's tuple fields drop the path's separators and escapes, so every valid path fits every wire; a compile-time assertion ties the two Rust constants together. Building a longer path fails with path::Invalid::TooLong (JS origins already refuse paths past Path.MAX_BYTES).
The encodable() preflight and the advertisement skip logic are gone in Rust and JS, along with their tests and the allocation bench added for the preflight.
New ietf::namespace::encode_track / Namespace.encodeTrack bound a Full Track Name (namespace field bytes plus track name) to 4096 bytes before writing anything. SUBSCRIBE, TRACK_STATUS, FETCH, and PUBLISH use it, so an over-long name fails only that request locally (Error::Encode(BoundsExceeded) in Rust, a rejected request in JS) and nothing reaches the peer. Receiving one from a peer is unchanged.
Decoding a moq-transport namespace whose escaped path would exceed Path::MAX_BYTES (one dense with / or \ inside fields) is refused like the other namespace limits, in both languages.
The completed quest quest/m1/cut-audit/announce-reencode.md is retired: with every path within 4096 bytes, no route is too large to re-encode on either wire.
Impact
Breaking (moq-net, @moq/net):Path::MAX_BYTES / Path.MAX_BYTES is 4096. Migrate by keeping broadcast paths within 4096 bytes; a longer one now fails at construction (Rust) or at the origin (JS) instead of only on moq-transport. Documented in both MIGRATE.mds.
Breaking behavior (moq-transport): a SUBSCRIBE, TRACK_STATUS, FETCH, or PUBLISH whose namespace and track name exceed 4096 bytes fails that request instead of being sent. Migrate by keeping namespace plus track name within 4096 bytes.
Wire, moq-lite: the lite-07 draft (unpublished, -wip) states the 4,096-byte path bound. The code bound applies to every lite version, as the 16 KiB one did, so an older peer sending a 4097 to 16384-byte path is now refused.
Wire, moq-transport: a namespace whose escaped path exceeds 4096 bytes is refused on decode, though the draft allows one with up to 4096 field bytes. Only namespaces packed with / or \ inside fields reach this.
New public function ietf::namespace::encode_track beside the existing encode_namespace; ietf::namespace::encodable (added by this PR's earlier revision) is gone.
Decisions
Oversized namespace advertisements:
Skip them at send time (previous revision)
✅ Lower Path::MAX_BYTES to the IETF bound so none can exist (maintainer)
Path::MAX_PARTS: ✅ unchanged at 32. It already matches the IETF field limit, and tuple fields never outnumber path segments. (agent, not reserved)
Full Track Name over 4096 bytes: ✅ strict per-request encode error, not a skip or session close (maintainer). A refused PUBLISH under SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS ends only that track's PUBLISH stream, reset before its header.
Spec-valid namespaces whose escaped path exceeds 4096 bytes: ✅ refused on decode as a protocol violation, rather than raising the path limit to fit them (maintainer).
Alternatives
Skipping unencodable routes kept a path limit no wire could carry and grew a preflight on every advertisement. A path limit counted in unescaped field bytes would accept every IETF namespace but give Path two length notions; the escape-dense namespaces it would admit have no known producer.
Validation
Reproduced before the fix: with the Full Track Name bound disabled, the new Rust tests fail (the 2049-byte name encodes; the over-long SUBSCRIBE is sent and never refused).
New tests: Rust path_bound_covers_namespace_fields, full_track_name_is_bounded_on_encode, an_unencodable_track_name_fails_only_its_subscription (Draft 18 and 22, then a following SUBSCRIBE on the same session reaches the peer); JS equivalents in namespace.test.ts. The ietf_paths fuzz target now asserts every decoded namespace re-encodes.
On head af0a685649: just fix passed; just check passed every module (8871 Rust tests, drafts, markdown, quest) except test js, where only @moq/boy failed, identically on unmodified origin/main (its ?worklet mock does not load under bun 1.4.2); every other affected JS package passed, including @moq/net (2496). just test interop --all passed. quest check --base origin/main passed.
On head d7fb021259 (docs only: TRACK_STATUS in the JS migration note, stale 16 KiB origin docs): just check passed except the same @moq/boy failure, and just test interop --all passed.
Follow-ups
Non-canonical escapes: a path with a lone \ (not before / or \) does not round-trip through a moq-transport namespace (\x arrives as \\x), and enough of them push the decoded path past 4096 bytes. Pre-existing; decide whether Path or the moq-transport encoder refuses them.
quest/m1/cut-audit/announce-path-bytes.md plans a byte bound for lite-07 compressed announce paths; since Path construction is now bounded at 4096 bytes, its plan may be partly done and should be re-checked.

No actionable bugs found in the changed Rust/JavaScript namespace encoders and publisher paths. The preflight checks the actual wire representation (full path for request advertisements, relative suffix for inline entries) before active counts and advertisement/request-ID allocation. Sharing exact tuple-field validation with encoding is a focused fix, preferable to shrinking the global path limit or aborting sibling discovery; the conservative fast paths keep ordinary advertisements simple.
The UTF-8/escaped-field boundary, repeated subscription, sibling/later update, request-ID, and Lite maximum-START tests cover the intended invariants. No earlier published findings to reconcile.
Verification: static source and test inspection only. I did not run tests, interop, browser playback, or allocation benchmarks, and have not independently verified the reported CI/performance results.
The path byte limit changes from 16,384 to 4,096 in JavaScript and Rust. Namespace encoding and decoding now validate path and tuple limits. Combined namespace-and-track-name encoders enforce the 4,096-byte limit and are used by PUBLISH, SUBSCRIBE, FETCH, and TRACK_STATUS encoding. Tests cover size boundaries and a valid subscription after an oversized request. Protocol documentation and migration notes are updated.

Lower Path::MAX_BYTES to 4096 in Rust and JS, so every valid path fits
a moq-transport namespace, and drop the advertisement preflight and
skip logic. A namespace and track name over 4096 bytes together now
fails its own SUBSCRIBE, TRACK_STATUS, FETCH, or PUBLISH at encode time
instead of being sent to a peer that must close the session.

No actionable bugs found in this substantive revision from 7fed8cb, excluding intervening base changes. The earlier review had no findings to reconcile. This replaces advertisement filtering with the documented 4096-byte path bound and adds shared Full Track Name validation before framed requests reach the wire.
Direction: the narrower path contract simplifies advertisement handling, at the explicit compatibility cost of rejecting formerly accepted Lite paths and some spec-valid, escape-dense IETF namespaces. Given that documented choice, centralizing namespace-plus-name accounting is preferable to duplicating guards at each request site. The byte-boundary/escaped-field tests and Rust same-session subscription regression target the right invariants; a matching JS request-lifecycle regression would strengthen coverage beyond its codec tests.
Verification: static inspection of the changed encoders, path/origin validation, request framing and relevant lifecycle/tests only. I did not run tests, interop or benchmarks, or independently verify the PR's reported results.

Preserve the receive limit for published moq-lite versions
When a peer running an earlier build sends a 4097–16384-byte path over moq-lite-06 or another published version, this shared constant now makes Path::decode reject an announcement that previously succeeded. The decoder ignores its version argument, and both legacy and current announcement decoders call it, so the reduction also affects published protocols rather than only moq-lite-07-wip. This can terminate discovery and withdraw healthy sibling routes during a rolling upgrade. Preserve the existing receive capacity for published versions instead of applying the new IETF-sized bound unconditionally.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Deliberate, and documented under Impact. No published moq-lite draft specifies 16 KiB; it was an implementation bound, and the maintainer chose to lower it so every Path fits every wire. Keeping a 16 KiB receive limit for older lite versions would give Path two bounds, and a path admitted under the larger one could not be re-encoded to moq-transport or held by the type whose invariant this PR establishes. The only affected traffic is an older peer announcing a path over 4096 bytes, which has no known producer.

Account for escape expansion when validating emitted namespaces
A valid local path containing \x repeated 1366 times is only 2732 bytes, and to_tuple preserves those unrecognized escape sequences, so this encoder accepts it. However, from_tuple doubles every backslash, producing a 4098-byte path that the newly reduced Path::MAX_BYTES rejects. Thus this change still allows an advertisement that this same implementation cannot receive, losing the namespace stream and its healthy siblings. The JavaScript encoder has the same gap. Validate the receiver-side escaped representation as well, or otherwise ensure accepted local paths remain decodable.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Confirmed, but this is a symptom of a pre-existing gap rather than the bound: a lone \\ before anything other than / or \\ is not a canonical escape, so \\x and \\\\x both encode to field \\x, and the receiver already gets a different path (\\\\x) than the one sent, at any length. Lowering the bound only turns the >1365-lone-backslash case from a silently renamed path into a refused one. Checking the receiver-side length on encode would still end the namespace stream (on our side instead of the peer's) and leave the renaming in place, so I'm not adding it here. The root fix is deciding what a non-canonical escape means (refuse it in Path, or refuse it when encoding a moq-transport namespace), which changes behavior for short paths like a\\b and needs its own change; I'm recording it as a follow-up.

Filter unencodable namespace advertisements before selection and state accounting.
Publisher::offer checks only ns.permitted(path) before selecting an advertisement. The active-count calculation also counts selected advertisements without checking whether their encoded tuple is valid.
Use the full path for Target::Requests and the relative suffix for Target::Inline. Apply the same preflight before active counting, request-ID allocation, and advertisement state assignment. A 33-segment path can otherwise pass Path, fail namespace::encode_namespace, and make the inline namespace write return an error that ends the namespace stream.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff Publisher::offer finding: no preflight is needed, by design. A 33-segment path never reaches offer: the origin refuses publishing a path deeper than Path::MAX_PARTS (create_withheld in rs/moq-net/src/model/origin.rs), and with Path::MAX_BYTES at 4096 every path's tuple fields fit the namespace limit. An inline suffix is a sub-path of the full path, so it is bounded too. This PR removed the earlier advertisement preflight on purpose (maintainer decision) in favor of making an unencodable namespace unrepresentable.

@kixelated You are correct. I verified the publication depth checks in create_withheld and Announcing::new, the 4096-byte Path bound, and the namespace tuple conversion.
Tuple conversion cannot increase the field-byte total. An inline suffix cannot exceed the full path’s bounds. These invariants make the extra preflight in Publisher::offer unnecessary. I withdraw the outside-diff finding.
📝 I couldn't check this conversation for new learnings, so no new learning was saved.
Decision recorded: refusing a moq-transport namespace whose fields fit 4096 bytes but whose escaped path exceeds Path::MAX_BYTES is the maintainer's call (✅).
Fixed: the JS migration note now lists TRACK_STATUS; origin::Producer::create_broadcast and mount docs said 16 KiB and now name Path::MAX_BYTES.
Replied, not changed: keeping a 16 KiB receive limit for published lite versions (would give Path two bounds), the CodeRabbit advertisement preflight (the origin's depth check and the 4096 bound make it unreachable), and the escape-expansion case, which comes from pre-existing non-canonical escapes and is listed as a follow-up.
Checks: required CI passed, just test interop --all passed, quest check passed.
#6927 capped paths at 4096 bytes, superseding this branch's
fuzz assertion; take main's side of every conflict.
