Closing a producer currently turns unfinished groups into clean EOF, an unanswered request into an empty finished track, and a Lite protocol violation into clean track teardown. Preserve the actual error through teardown, cancel unfinished groups while retaining completed groups, and reject dropped pending requests with Rust's INTERNAL_ERROR mapping.

Impact: breaking public JS API. Pass an Error to Request.reject(error); finish each group before closing its producer when its contents are complete. Wire framing and negotiation are unchanged; unanswered requests reset with INTERNAL_ERROR instead of inventing an empty finished track.

Validation: full just ci and all cross-language just test interop --all checks pass. All 2,499 @moq/net tests pass, including four new reproduced terminal-path cases. Updated fixtures finish groups they intend to preserve and keep duration-skipping's stalled producer live until consumption. API report updated.

Decisions

The quest's previous Goal and Plan disagreed about a deliberately closed session's received track. The maintainer confirmed keeping the explicit Plan and current Rust behavior: transport closes cleanly; the received track's local route closes without declaring a content end; unfinished groups are CANCELLED and finished groups remain readable. The remaining track-termination choice stays recorded in the quest. The independent FIN-drain work remains in moq-dev/moq#6969.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: c8100b3

No actionable bugs found. The direction is sound: unfinished groups retain cancellation rather than becoming EOF, unanswered requests carry INTERNAL_ERROR, and Lite violations reach received tracks before ordinary teardown can erase the cause. The small #fail helper keeps this narrower and simpler than a session-wide lifecycle redesign; preserving already-finished groups and the deliberate local route-close distinction is consistent with the stated scope.

Reviewed the changed code, surrounding producer/group/subscriber teardown, API report and regression tests. Static inspection only; I did not run tests or independently verify the reported CI/interoperability results.

Walkthrough

The change makes Request.reject require an error and makes producer closure cancel unfinished cached groups while finished groups remain readable. Broadcast closure rejects pending requests with an Internal StreamError. Lite connection failures close the subscriber with the failure cause before aborting the connection. Tests cover these outcomes and adjust a consumer test’s close order. The audit notes describe the resulting track termination behavior.

JavaScript callers omitting the newly required error can still produce a clean track ending. The change is mergeable with awareness of that limitation.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(net)!: preserve errors when closing unfinished work" matches the main change. The changeset makes closing a producer keep the error for unfinished groups and pending requests instead of turning them into clean EOF or empty finished tracks. It also adds the breaking ! marker, since Request.reject now requires an Error. The title is short, specific, and does not list files.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem: closing a producer turns unfinished groups into clean EOF, unanswered requests into empty finished tracks, and Lite protocol violations into clean teardown. It states the fix: errors are preserved through teardown, unfinished groups are cancelled while completed groups remain, and dropped pending requests are rejected with INTERNAL_ERROR. It also covers the breaking API change (Request.reject(error)), validation, and the related quest decision. This matches the changeset, so it passes.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 9 files. Merge summary for c8100b3:

  • Reviews: Codex thumbs-up on this head with no findings; an automated OpenAI review found nothing actionable.
  • CodeRabbit asked for a runtime guard on Request.reject. Declined in the thread: Producer.abort and Group.abort also rely on the Error type signature, so a guard on reject alone would be inconsistent.
  • CI: 13/13 checks pass. quest check passes, and the quest is rewritten to its remaining track-termination decision.

Queuing as is with no changes.

Merged main into the branch as cd29a43 to clear a GitHub conflict. The only overlap was adjacent lines in the quest/m1/cut-audit/README.md link list, which quest's merge driver resolved; no code was hand-resolved. quest check passes on the new head. Auto-merge remains enabled and will queue the PR once CI passes.

Since #6978, closing a track truncates its unfinished groups, so the
test's never-finished first group made lite-01..04 abort at session
close. The test checks delivery of the final group, so finish the first
one explicitly. Also repoint the cut-audit quest's link to the deleted
js-close-fin quest at this PR.
