quest: cut records-free HLS on a broadcast join interval - #7041
#6937 made HLS records the default until time addressing lets the export list segments from group starts. Media consumers by start deleted the records but never said what replaces their two jobs: a segment sequence that every edge and reload agree on (HLS numbers segments by position, so EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE must be stable), and a declared duration for the target.
Approach
Plan-only. Amends the consumers quest with the maintainer's 2026-10-27 decisions from an HLS audit:
A new catalog media section for what applies to every audio and video track. media.join.interval promises each track starts a group at least that often and is the export's grid, fixed for the broadcast instance. clock moves to media.clock in the same break. The per-rendition hls field is deleted entirely.
Each group belongs to the segment of the first grid line (pts N × interval, what a Time start resolves to) it contains; a group containing no line joins the segment before it, or after a gap, the line it starts after. The edge trims; no exclusive time end. Media sequence number is N.
Whole groups only, never a mid-GOP split.
A segment with no groups is EXT-X-GAP, so numbering never skips across a pause or an overrun, and no media is dropped. An overrunning group is listed at its first line.
Segments run under twice the interval even without an overrun; the target choice is recorded as open (below).
DASH lists the same segments by $Time$.
Also drops the stale "opt-in" wording for hls in the archive README and the m1 index.
Decisions
Grid over per-edge counting (failover renumbers) and a publisher counter (per-producer state).
Containing rule over start-cell, so a segment resolves from its number with one Time start.
Whole GOPs: mid-GOP splits were rejected because most segments would lose independence.
Grid = the interval itself, catalog-wide rather than per rendition, nested as media.join.interval so a non-grid join mechanism can sit beside it later.
Made in review (agent, not maintainer):
One group-ownership rule replaces the separate pause and overrun cases, so media resuming between lines is never dropped and no group is claimed by two segments.
media.join.interval binds only outside a pause.
Left open for the maintainer in the quest: target of twice the interval (RFC 8216 compliant, longer holdback) or the interval with longer segments listed under the overrun rule.
Impact
Public API: none (plan only). Wire: none (plan only); the planned wire change is listed in the quest.
The time-addressed HLS export numbers segments from a catalog-wide
media.join.interval grid, keeps whole groups, and fills pauses and
overruns with EXT-X-GAP. Drop the stale opt-in wording for hls records.

Preserve resumed groups before the next grid line
When a track resumes between grid lines, these rules leave valid media out of every segment. For example, with a 2-second interval, a pause covering PTS 2 and resumed groups spanning [2.2, 3), [3, 4), and [4, 5), segment 1 is marked EXT-X-GAP, while segment 2 starts at the group containing PTS 4. The groups spanning [2.2, 4) therefore belong to neither segment and are lost from the export, even though the resumed track satisfies the declared join interval. Define how the first resumed groups are assigned to a segment when the preceding grid line falls inside a gap.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, fixed in 2c6f706. A line inside a pause or gap now starts its segment at the first group after it, so the resumed groups [2.2, 4) in your example form segment 1. The segment is EXT-X-GAP only when no group starts before the next line. Each segment also now runs up to where segment N + 1 starts, rather than to the group containing the next line, so the partition stays whole.
P2 — quest/m1/time-addressing/consumers.md:44–57: the containing-group rule can produce a segment longer than the declared interval even when every group satisfies the join promise. With interval 2s and contiguous groups [0.1,2.1), [2.1,3.9), [3.9,5.9), segment 1 runs from 0.1 to 3.9 (3.8s), but the target is 2s. No group contains multiple grid lines, so the documented overrun exception does not cover this valid stream. Separate the numbering interval from the target bound (allowing for boundary displacement), or explicitly define and test duration handling for these ordinary multi-group segments; the current promise does not justify that target.
Also confirmed the existing resume-between-grid-lines finding: valid resumed groups can fall into no segment. Referencing it rather than duplicating the inline comment.
Direction: deterministic numbering without record tracks is a useful simplification, but the whole-group partition needs explicit coverage and duration invariants before implementation. Small table-driven examples covering gaps, unequal GOP lengths, and overruns would make the design substantially easier to validate.
Verification: static review of this plan and its group-model/target-duration dependencies only; no implementation or playback tests were run.
The documentation changes the broadcast catalog description to specify a per-rendition hls field. It defines HLS segment numbering and boundaries from the broadcast’s media.join.interval and describes group assignment, whole-group segments, gaps, and overrun behavior. It also specifies matching DASH segments addressed by $Time$, table-driven tests, and changes to the API and wire descriptions.
Priority: Low
Merge Risk: Low · up to 82cef
The plan has specification gaps to settle before implementation starts: who owns a first group that contains no grid line, which target-duration rule is normative, and how the interval is encoded. None affects shipped behavior now.

Segment duration (P2): agreed the bound was wrong. Under the containing rule, the group holding line N can start up to one interval before it, so an ordinary segment runs under twice the interval. 2c6f706 states that bound. Choosing between a target of twice the interval (RFC 8216 compliant, longer player holdback) and the interval with those segments listed under fixed target duration's overrun rule is a latency trade the maintainer owns, so the plan records it as open rather than picking one. The containing rule itself was settled over start-cell (see Decisions), and start-cell has the same under-twice bound, so the grid stays.
Resumed groups: fixed in the same commit; see the inline reply.
Table-driven examples: the plan now asks for table-driven tests over pauses ending between lines, unequal GOPs, and overruns.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Resolve duplicate segment starts after a pause
When the first resumed group crosses the next grid line, this rule assigns the same group to two consecutive segment starts. For example, with interval 2, a pause from PTS 1 to 3, and resumed groups [3, 4.5) and [4.5, 6), segment 1 starts at 3 because line 2 is in the pause, while segment 2 also starts at 3 because that group contains line 4. The stated next-segment trimming rule therefore makes segment 1 empty, yet it is not marked EXT-X-GAP. The multiple-line exception does not cover this case because the resumed group contains only one grid line. Define ownership and gap numbering for this collision before implementing the segmentation plan.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, fixed in 82cef98 with one ownership rule in place of the separate pause and overrun cases: each group belongs to the first line it contains; a group containing no line joins the segment of the group before it, or after a gap, the segment of the line it starts after; a segment with no groups is EXT-X-GAP. In your example, [3, 4.5) contains line 4, so it is segment 2 and segment 1 is a gap. The original example still holds: [2.2, 3) and [3, 4) contain no line and follow the gap, so they form segment 1. The planned table tests now include pauses that end past the next line.
Follow-up to my previous review, separating the base's on-demand-capture addition from this PR's changes:
The duration issue is now acknowledged correctly for ordinary uninterrupted segmentation, with target selection explicitly left to the maintainer. That addresses the previous plan's unsupported interval-sized bound; the target choice remains open, not an implemented fix.
The original resumed-media-loss example is addressed, but the replacement introduces the already-reported duplicate-start case at quest/m1/time-addressing/consumers.md:44–53. Confirmed: with a 2s interval and a resumed group [3,4.5), both the paused line at 2 and the containing line at 4 select start 3. Trimming at the next segment start makes the earlier segment empty without marking it GAP. Define ownership for equal resolved starts, not only groups containing multiple grid lines, and add this case to the planned table tests. Referencing the existing finding rather than duplicating an inline comment.
Direction: the fixes and explicit test matrix improve the plan; a single ownership rule for collided starts would be simpler and safer than separate pause/overrun exceptions. No additional actionable findings in the changed material.
Verification: static plan review against the previous reviewed head and current base; no implementation or playback tests run.
The duplicate-start/empty-segment case is addressed in the plan: each group now has one owner, and an unowned segment is explicitly GAP. With interval 2s, resumed [3,4.5) belongs to segment 2 while segment 1 is GAP; the original short resumed groups [2.2,3), [3,4) still belong to segment 1. The expanded table-test requirement covers both shapes. This also preserves the earlier resumed-media-loss fix.
No new actionable bugs found in this revision. Direction is improved: unified group ownership is simpler than the separate pause and overrun rules. The previously noted target-duration choice remains explicitly open for the maintainer; this review does not treat it as resolved.
Verification: static review of the changed plan and boundary examples only. No implementation or playback tests were run.
Fixed from review: one group-ownership rule (first line a group contains; otherwise the segment before it, or after a gap, the line it starts after; an empty segment is EXT-X-GAP) replaces the separate pause and overrun cases, so resumed media is never dropped and no group has two segments. media.join.interval binds outside a pause. The plan states that segments run under twice the interval and asks for table-driven tests over pauses, unequal GOPs, and overruns. Merged main (conflict-free) and dropped a private product name from the plan.
Replied, not changed: the archive and hls-target docs keep today's hls contract until the consumers quest lands and rewrites them; DASH $Time$ needs no gap slots; the understated overrun EXTINF is a maintainer decision.
Open for the maintainer, recorded in the quest: target of twice the interval (RFC 8216 compliant, longer holdback) or the interval with longer segments under the overrun rule.
Checks on this head: just ci and quest check --base origin/main pass. Codex 👍 and the automated review found nothing new.

Define the wire representation and time conversion for media.join.interval.
Because the interval is catalog-wide and segment edges use pts N × interval, specify whether it is an elapsed duration or ticks in media.clock’s scale. If a track uses another PTS scale, define the conversion and rounding rule. The plan already states that the interval is fixed for the broadcast instance.

Define ownership for an initial group with no grid line.
A group can start between grid lines and end before the next line. The current rule assigns it to the preceding group, or assigns it by the grid line after a gap. The document does not define the start of the broadcast as a gap, so an initial group with no predecessor has no segment owner. Add this case to the table-driven tests.
Suggested clarification

If no preceding group exists, or a gap precedes it, it joins the segment of the grid line immediately before its start.

consumers.md derives the target from media.join.interval, but hls-target.md still derives it from per-rendition opt-in hls durations and requires one-to-one hls record alignment. The archive README still references this rule and does not supersede it. Keep one normative target-duration rule before implementation starts.
