feat(cli): moq export mp4 --output records a crash-safe regular MP4 - #7357
There is no way to record a broadcast straight to a regular MP4. export fmp4 streams fragments to stdout, which plays but is a poor archive format, and a crash in the middle of a regular-MP4 writer loses the whole file.
Approach
moq export mp4 --output <file> records the way OBS's hybrid MP4 does, per the quest plan (decided 2026-10-04):
Layout:ftyp, a reserved 16-byte free box, the fragmented moov, then moof+mdat pairs. While recording, the file is a valid fMP4, so a crash still leaves a playable file.
Finish: the end of the broadcast or the first SIGINT/SIGTERM appends a regular moov (no mvex, co64 offsets), fsyncs, then overwrites the reserved free with a 64-bit mdat header. That header covers everything before the new moov. No media is copied.
Sample tables: built by parsing each written moof as it goes out. moq-mux gets no API change beyond the new module.
Late renditions: a rendition that joins after the fragmented moov is written inside free boxes, which crash-time readers skip. Only the final moov indexes it. fmp4::Export gets a crate-private with_late_tracks() / declaration() / declarations() for this, and keeps a departed rendition out of its polled tracks once written out. export fmp4 keeps failing on a late rendition, as before.
Graceful finish in moq-cli: recordings run in their own Recordings set with a CancellationToken. On the first signal, drive finishes them before the listener drain. A second signal aborts and leaves the fragmented file. If another stage ends the process, the recordings still finish.
Checked end to end against ffprobe/ffmpeg with bbb5s_cbr.ts (HEVC + Opus):
A clean end gives ftyp, mdat, moov and decodes cleanly. The A/V offset is the same as export fmp4 gives for the same input.
SIGINT mid-recording gives the same regular layout.
SIGINT followed by SIGTERM leaves ftyp, free, moov, moof…, which also decodes.
Impact
moq-mux: new container::mp4 module with Export (new, with_max_delay, with_fragment_duration, next, poll_next, finish) and Finish { moov, mdat_offset, mdat }. The API is sans-IO: the caller appends the bytes next returns, then appends moov and writes mdat at mdat_offset.
moq-mux: new fmp4::Error::Unindexable { track, reason } variant. The enum is #[non_exhaustive].
moq-cli: new export mp4 --output <FILE> sink. It takes --max-delay, --fragment-duration, the rendition selection flags, and --echo.
No wire changes.
Choices made without asking
--output must not exist yet. The CLI refuses it at startup, like export hls --output, rather than overwriting a recording.
If the export fails mid-recording (for example a changed sample entry), the file is still finished with what was recorded, and the command then exits with the error. A failed file write leaves the file as it is.
If nothing was written (no init segment yet), the CLI deletes the empty file.
A fragment still buffering at SIGINT (up to one GOP, or --fragment-duration) is dropped, because only closed fragments are on disk. A clean end of the broadcast writes everything.
Movie timescale is the fragmented moov's (the first track's media timescale). Tracks with no samples are left out of the final moov.
ExportSink::stdout()/Stdout are renamed to container()/ContainerSink, and run_stdout to run_container, since mp4 writes to a file rather than stdout.
Decisions
Settled by the maintainer on 2026-10-30:
Gaps and track start offsets.
✅ (a) Keep this: a gap inside a track stretches the stts delta of the sample before it, and a track that starts later than the earliest one gets one empty edit (elstmedia_time = -1) before its media edit.
(b) Use an edit list for gaps too.
(c) No edit lists.
A returning rendition with a new codec configuration.
✅ (a) Keep failing: the export fails with TrackChanged, and the file is finished with what was recorded up to that point.
(b) Add a second sample description so the recording carries on.
Both match what is implemented, so no code changed.
Alternatives
Moov-first (faststart): costs a full copy at finish; ruled out by the plan.
Rebuilding sample tables from in-memory frame metadata instead of parsing moofs: parsing what was written keeps the index in step with the file, and the same code can serve a future repair command.
Follow-ups
A moq repair command that finishes a crashed recording by scanning its moofs. The indexer in container::mp4 is the piece it would reuse. Late renditions would also need their trak written into the file to be recoverable.
fmp4::Export with --fragment-duration shorter than a GOP of reordered video writes tfdts that step backwards. This is pre-existing and affects export fmp4 and the crash-time mp4 file. Fixing it needs decode-duration inference for B-frames, not just a decode clock.
Flush the partial fragment on SIGINT instead of dropping it (needs a flush hook on fmp4::Export).
just check's test gh flaked once (test_terminating_the_run_stops_the_running_phase, a timing race in the CI script's own test). It passed 3/3 on rerun and is unrelated to this change.
Checks
just check on the first commit: all modules passed except the test gh flake above, which passed 3/3 on rerun.
After the online-review fixes and merging main (head 3caea122d0): just rs check-test-changed over the PR's files (moq-mux, moq-cli and dependents: clippy via the test build, fmt, doc, shear, sort, and tests) passed.
New unit tests: moq-muxcontainer::mp4::tests (6) and moq-cli recordings shutdown (3).
New nightly process test: export::an_interrupted_mp4_recording_is_finished (just rs cli-export). Ran locally: pass.
Online review
CodeRabbit, Opus placed one pre-skip late: fixed in b7efdd7. Timeline::start is now the Hang time (media start minus priming) and places the track; the edit's media_time keeps the priming. later_starts_and_gaps_keep_their_time now uses a 312-sample pre-skip and failed before the fix.
Codex, departed renditions accumulate: fixed in b7efdd7. After the init, a drained departed rendition moves out of the polled tracks map into departed (restored on return), and a late rendition that wrote nothing is dropped. finish builds its declaration lookup once. Not done: disk-backed retention, since a departed rendition that recorded media needs its trak in the final moov anyway. Test departed_late_renditions_keep_only_what_they_wrote.
Review
Local quest review (Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort) against origin/main at head b078a65575d8a8bbd99eafe53c6f0f9dec6ae8f5: a merge of main plus one commit moving the export integration test and moq-mux's record helper from tokio::time::{timeout,sleep} to kio::clock, since main moved moq-clock into kio::clock (moq-dev/moq#7027) and bans tokio's timers. Round 1, 0 findings. CHECK_FAIL_FAST=1 just ci origin/main passes.
The file is fragmented MP4 while recording, with a reserved `free` box
after the ftyp. The broadcast's end or the first SIGINT/SIGTERM appends a
regular moov, indexed by parsing the written moofs back, and overwrites
the reserved box with a 64-bit mdat header, so no media is copied. A
second signal exits at once and leaves the fragmented file. Renditions
that join mid-recording go into `free` boxes and only the final moov
indexes them.

feat(cli): moq export mp4 --output records a crash-safe regular MP4
Oct 30, 2026
The existing historical-track retention finding is actionable: rs/moq-mux/src/container/fmp4/export.rs:888-910 accepts unlimited new rendition names but retains departed tracks, including empty ones, and scans that history on subsequent updates. I agree that live subscription state should be separated from archival metadata rather than adding a fixed track cap; no duplicate inline comment.
No additional actionable bugs found. Overall, reusing the fMP4 exporter and indexing the actual emitted fragments is a proportionate approach to avoiding a full-file rewrite. The documented reordered-video final-index fix is present; the separately documented pre-existing crash-time fMP4 limitation is not a new finding.
Verification: static review of the diff and relevant mux/CLI paths and tests only. I did not run tests or independently verify ffmpeg playback or crash durability.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Walkthrough
The CLI adds export mp4 --output for file recordings. The muxer writes fragmented MP4 data and builds a regular-MP4 index when recording ends. The exporter supports late-joining renditions. The CLI validates output paths, finalizes recordings on broadcast end or the first shutdown signal, and aborts unfinished recording tasks if a second signal arrives. Documentation and tests are updated.
Merge Risk: Low · up to f6a52
Recording stopped after the init segment but before the first fragment closes leaves a file with no tracks that no player can open. The CLI reports it as finished instead of deleting it. The case is rare and low impact; return None from finish when no track has indexed samples. The Opus audio/video placement issue is fixed.

The finished moov placed an Opus track one pre-skip late: the edit's
media time counts the priming, but the movie position is the Hang time.
A late rendition that leaves is moved out of the polled track set once
written out, and dropped when it wrote nothing, so a publisher cycling
rendition names holds only what was recorded.

Reviewed commit: 9fb0bbb6a7e301329f80abfd946398ea8a7f42d6, compared with my previous review at 60fa3370fdd5925a2171f93f810207a6e2d13ab9, separating the merged base changes.
No new actionable bugs found in the update. The previously referenced track-retention finding is addressed for empty-rendition churn and historical polling cost: drained tracks leave the live map, empty late tracks are discarded, and finalization builds one declaration lookup. Recorded-track metadata remains proportional to the recording; disk-backed retention is not implemented. The independently reported Opus placement issue is also fixed: movie placement subtracts priming while the media edit retains it.
Overall direction remains sound: separating live state from the recording index is simpler than repeatedly scanning all historical tracks, without adding a fixed refusal cap. Static review of the changed logic, surrounding lifecycle and regression tests only; tests, playback and crash durability were not independently executed.
Fixed CodeRabbit's Opus placement finding (b7efdd7): the finished moov placed Opus one pre-skip late. Placement now uses the Hang time (media start minus priming), and the edit's media_time keeps the priming. Regression test reproduced the 6.5 ms shift before the fix.
Fixed Codex's retention finding (b7efdd7): drained departed renditions leave the polled track map (restored on return), late ones that wrote nothing are dropped, and finish builds its declaration lookup once. Disk-backed retention was not added: a rendition that recorded media needs its trak in the final moov anyway.
Merged main cleanly (3caea12); just rs check-test-changed over the PR's crates passed; local Codex gpt-6.1-sol review of 3caea12: no findings.
9fb0bbb drops /quest/m2/mp4-export.md from the Required lists of mp4-repair and mp4-sigint-flush, which landed on main meanwhile; quest check --base origin/main passes. Review skipped as trivial (recorded in the body).
Codex land fixer: fixer crashed (exit 101); run /quest-iterate. Recommendation: run /quest-iterate before picking it again.

export fmp4streams fragments to stdout, which plays but is a poor archive format, and a crash in the middle of a regular-MP4 writer loses the whole file.Approach
moq export mp4 --output <file>records the way OBS's hybrid MP4 does, per the quest plan (decided 2026-10-04):ftyp, a reserved 16-bytefreebox, the fragmentedmoov, then moof+mdat pairs. While recording, the file is a valid fMP4, so a crash still leaves a playable file.moov(nomvex,co64offsets),fsyncs, then overwrites the reservedfreewith a 64-bitmdatheader. That header covers everything before the newmoov. No media is copied.moofas it goes out.moq-muxgets no API change beyond the new module.moovis written insidefreeboxes, which crash-time readers skip. Only the finalmoovindexes it.fmp4::Exportgets a crate-privatewith_late_tracks()/declaration()/declarations()for this, and keeps a departed rendition out of its polled tracks once written out.export fmp4keeps failing on a late rendition, as before.moq-cli: recordings run in their ownRecordingsset with aCancellationToken. On the first signal, drivefinishes them before the listener drain. A second signal aborts and leaves the fragmented file. If another stage ends the process, the recordings still finish.Checked end to end against ffprobe/ffmpeg with
bbb5s_cbr.ts(HEVC + Opus):ftyp, mdat, moovand decodes cleanly. The A/V offset is the same asexport fmp4gives for the same input.ftyp, free, moov, moof…, which also decodes.Impact
moq-mux: newcontainer::mp4module withExport(new,with_max_delay,with_fragment_duration,next,poll_next,finish) andFinish { moov, mdat_offset, mdat }. The API is sans-IO: the caller appends the bytesnextreturns, then appendsmoovand writesmdatatmdat_offset.moq-mux: newfmp4::Error::Unindexable { track, reason }variant. The enum is#[non_exhaustive].moq-cli: newexport mp4 --output <FILE>sink. It takes--max-delay,--fragment-duration, the rendition selection flags, and--echo.Choices made without asking
--outputmust not exist yet. The CLI refuses it at startup, likeexport hls --output, rather than overwriting a recording.--fragment-duration) is dropped, because only closed fragments are on disk. A clean end of the broadcast writes everything.moov's (the first track's media timescale). Tracks with no samples are left out of the finalmoov.ExportSink::stdout()/Stdoutare renamed tocontainer()/ContainerSink, andrun_stdouttorun_container, sincemp4writes to a file rather than stdout.Decisions
Settled by the maintainer on 2026-10-30:
sttsdelta of the sample before it, and a track that starts later than the earliest one gets one empty edit (elstmedia_time = -1) before its media edit.TrackChanged, and the file is finished with what was recorded up to that point. Both match what is implemented, so no code changed.
