fix(land): keep the fixer alive through output bursts and say why it stopped - #320
Completes quest/m0/host-land/fixer-survives.md: the fixer no longer crashes on moq's ejections, its fixed results get through, and a failed fixer's handback says why.
Causes, from the host's per-job logs
I read every fix-job-*.json.log in /var/lib/quest-land-moq/moq-dev-moq, the journal, the fixer's handback comments, and the host's unit generations.
Handback
Cause
Where
fixer crashed (exit 101) (14 jobs, 22:40 Oct 30 – 07:10 Oct 31 PDT)
Codex panicked: failed printing to stderr: Resource temporarily unavailable (os error 11). quest land fix let Codex inherit its stdout/stderr. Once Bun writes to a pipe, it marks the pipe O_NONBLOCK, and Codex shares that flag. Codex echoes each command's output to stderr, here a cat of a 2.4 MB failure log. The launcher FIFO holds 64 KiB, so the burst failed with EAGAIN. Every crashed log stops at about 64 KiB. The cargo_cyclonedx flood was only the output that happened to be running at the time. Seven logs lost the panic text to the same EAGAIN.
The agent's mechanical fixes were valid, but the import bound counted the full moq history the host fetched into the fixer's repository. So every fixed result on moq was refused.
Host generation 45 set ProcSubset=pid, which hides /proc/sys/kernel/random/boot_id, so identity() failed for every job. Any fixer still running at collection was declared gone. Generation 46 dropped the setting.
host: already fixed; quest no longer judges an unidentifiable process
A 502 while handing back an exit-101 crash replaced the crash reason.
quest: fixed
Once the fixer survived, collateral PRs were requeued as intended. The 06:08 job requeued five bystanders (quest: requeued 7362 7257 7306 7284 7312).
Changes
land-fix.ts: the agent writes into pipes of its own, which Bun relays to its stdout and stderr. The agent's ends stay blocking, so a slow reader applies backpressure instead of causing EAGAIN.
land-fixer.ts:
A job records the daemon's process identity and its launch packs.
A nonzero exit is reported as a signal by name (stopped by SIGTERM (exit 143)) or a crash with its code, with ; the daemon restarted while it ran when the daemon restarted.
A job with no process identity waits for its exit status or the timeout.
A collection retry keeps the first error.
land-fixer-repository.ts: the import skips the launch packs, both in its size bound and in what it copies. The clean repository borrows their objects from the daemon's own object store through an alternate the host writes. The fixer's alternates are still deleted.
README describes the restart caveat, the import bound, and the handback text.
Quest tree: deletes the quest and its links. The host's part becomes a "What remains" item in Run the gate on the maintainer's host: KillMode=process, and keep ProcSubset=pid off.
Tests (Linux):
A 1 MiB agent burst through a slow launcher pipe. Before the relay fix it fails (handback 1); now it requeues.
A collateral PR requeued beside the PR that broke the batch.
SIGTERM during a restart.
A fixer with no identity, and one that stops unrecorded.
The import bound, with real packed history and a descendant commit.
Choices made without asking
Restart-killed fixers still hand back, with a clear reason. Relaunching them was the alternative, but it would need the failure's tip and log persisted plus an exception to the one-attempt rule. Keeping them alive is the host's KillMode.
GitHub 5xx responses are still not retried in github.ts. That affects every caller, so it is a suggested follow-up rather than part of this fix.
The size bound still covers what the fixer added (100 MiB), now excluding the history it was given.
Set serviceConfig.KillMode = "process"; on each quest-land-<repo>.service. A detached fixer supervisor then outlives a deploy, and the new daemon collects its result. The daemon's in-flight check clients write to the old daemon's pipe, so they exit with EPIPE on their next write. Check it by restarting the unit while a fixer runs.
Suggested follow-ups
Retry GitHub 5xx and network errors in GitHub.request (src/cli/github.ts). Today a single 502 fails the whole operation.
Review
Reviewer: Codex CLI 0.164.0-alpha, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, via quest review --base origin/main.
Round 1 (head 78db495): one finding. Skipping the launch packs left the clean import repository without the fixed commit's parents. Fixed in a4bfede: the clean repository borrows the daemon's objects through a host-written alternate, and the test now imports a descendant of packed history (it fails without the fix).
Local checks on a4bfede: just check passed; just test passed (726 + 426 tests).
Head 6a1e3d7 relaxes the new burst test to count the 1 MiB of output instead of requiring it unbroken, since the two relayed streams may interleave (the gate's container did). Test-only; review skipped as trivial. The test and just check pass.
…stopped
moq's fixer died on every ejection on 2026-10-31. The host's per-job logs
show why:
- Exit 101 (14 jobs): Codex panicked with "failed printing to stderr:
Resource temporarily unavailable". `quest land fix` let Codex inherit its
stdout/stderr, and once Bun writes to a pipe it marks it non-blocking, so
a command's output burst past the launcher FIFO's 64 KiB failed with
EAGAIN. The agent now writes into pipes of its own, which Bun relays.
- "fixer repository exceeds 100 MiB": the import bound counted the full
history fetched into the fixer's repository, so every fixed result on
moq was refused. Packs fetched at launch are now skipped; the bound
covers what the fixer added.
- Exit 143: a deploy's restart SIGTERMed the fixer with the daemon's unit.
The handback now names the signal and the restart. Keeping fixers alive is
the host's KillMode, recorded in the gate host quest.
- "disappeared": the host briefly had ProcSubset=pid, so the daemon could
not identify a live fixer. A job without an identity now waits for its
exit status or the timeout.
- A GitHub 502 while handing back a crash no longer replaces the crash.
Tests cover a burst through a slow launcher pipe (fails before this fix), a
collateral requeue beside a handback, SIGTERM during a restart, an
unidentifiable fixer, and the import bound.

Review: skipping the launch packs left the clean repository without a fixed
commit's parents and unchanged objects, so its fetch failed. It now borrows
them from the daemon's own object store; the fixer's alternates stay deleted.
The test now packs real history and imports a descendant commit.

Walkthrough
The fixer records daemon process identity and launch-fetched packs. It forwards agent output to the host streams and reports signal exits, daemon restarts, and collection failures. Repository import skips known launch-fetched packs and limits added Git metadata to 100 MiB. Documentation and tests cover process survival across daemon restarts, handback details, output capture, collateral PR handling, and pack import.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 6a1e3
A fixer can receive an inaccurate handback reason, and the import may accept daemon-only objects into a fixed result. Restrict the borrowed objects before merging.

The fixer relays stdout and stderr into one log, so output from the other
stream may land inside the 1 MiB burst. The gate's container did that and
failed the contiguous match.

Restrict the alternate to launch-fetched objects.
When known is nonempty, the alternate exposes the daemon’s entire object directory to the clean import. A fixer that knows a daemon-only object ID can reference it from a new tree under an unprotected path. The import can resolve that object through the alternate, while validateFix checks ancestry and protected paths but not object provenance. Restrict borrowing to the launch-fetched object set before pushing the fixed head.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Do not identify a signal from an exit code alone.
If a custom fixer exits with code 143, the supervisor records 143, and exited reports stopped by SIGTERM. The supervisor does not record whether a signal occurred. Report the numeric exit as such, or qualify the signal name as a possibility. This keeps the handback reason accurate.

test(land): count the burst instead of requiring it unbroken
The fixer relays stdout and stderr into one log, so output from the other
stream may land inside the 1 MiB burst. The gate's container did that and
failed the contiguous match.

Plans what moq.pro's and rust2's cutover to the host gate and the fixer
repairs (#320, #325, #327, #328) left: collateral ejections keep their
fix attempt, a restarted daemon keeps its check, GitHub retries, current
conflict reports, land checks at gate priority, a fast kix runner test,
and deleting the legacy hold labels. The gate host records what shipped.
