Implements and deletes quest/m0/init-prune.md: quest init and quest uninstall remove Quest skill stubs whose skill no longer exists, such as quest-ready.

Summary

  • src/cli/setup.ts now recognizes a stub of any version by its shape (STUB): frontmatter whose name: is the directory name, then exactly the Run `quest skill <name>` and follow its output. / If \quest` is not installed, follow first.body, wherequest-` must match the directory too. Descriptions and the setup link are free, and CRLF is accepted.
  • quest init removes the SKILL.md of every quest-* entry in .claude/skills and .agents/skills that holds such a stub for a skill this version no longer ships, plus the directory once it's empty. It still validates everything before it writes anything.
  • quest uninstall removes stubs of any version, retired ones included. Before this, it left behind every stub that didn't byte-match the current text.
  • Symlinked skill directories and symlinked SKILL.md files are never removed, because Quest never writes links. The same goes for edited stubs, a user's own quest- skill, and other files in a stub's directory.
  • Docs: SETUP.md and docs/getting-started.md describe the pruning. The header comment in src/cli/skills.ts no longer claims the stub never changes. Headless agents now points at STUB as what a stub-body change has to keep accepting.

Choices made without asking

  • Older stubs of current skills are accepted and left as they are. This went beyond the quest's plan, but the quest's goal needs it. Exact matching made quest init refuse any stub whose description or setup link had changed, with "is not a Quest stub". Every repository that installed quest-ready did so before moq-dev/quest#282 moved the setup link from kixelated/quest to moq-dev/quest. So re-running quest init, which is how the plan says a repository picks up this fix, would refuse before pruning anything. Leaving those stubs untouched matches docs/getting-started.md ("existing stubs stay as they are"). Rewriting them is planned in Skill stub cleanup.
  • Any setup link is accepted (\S+), not a list of known URLs. This follows the plan's preference for shape over lists. The body's two fixed sentences and the three-way name match are what keep a user's own skill from being touched.

Checks

  • At 71ec112, after merging origin/main 3c8cdce: just check passes, just test passes (878 passed, 2 skipped), and quest check --base origin/main is ok.
  • The new tests in test/init.test.ts fail against the previous setup.ts (3 of them) and pass now.

Merge with main (71ec112)

  • src/cli/setup.ts: main's worktree hooks (moq-dev/quest#350) and this PR's pruning are combined. init still validates the hook settings before it writes anything, retired-stub removal included.
  • SETUP.md describes both the hooks and the pruning, for init and for uninstall.
  • test/init.test.ts keeps both sides' tests.
  • quest/m0/README.md: main had already removed the neighbouring entries, so dropping this quest's entry left the conflict empty.
  • quest/m0/helpers/headless-agents.md keeps this PR's STUB wording and main's removal of the Windows bullet.
  • quest/m0/skill-stubs.md: its Related link to the deleted init-prune.md is gone.

Suggested follow-ups

None. Both follow-ups this PR suggested earlier (refreshing outdated stubs of current skills, and the orphaned assets/skills/quest-close.md and assets/skills/quest-merge.md) are now planned on main as Skill stub cleanup. Both asset files are still on main and still not imported.

quest init and quest uninstall recognized a stub only by exact match with a
current skill's stub, so a repository that installed /quest-ready kept it
after #271 removed the skill, and any stub whose description or setup link
changed made init refuse to run. Both now recognize a stub of any version by
its shape: frontmatter naming the skill, then the `quest skill <name>`
pointer. Init removes such stubs for skills this version no longer ships and
leaves older stubs of current skills as they are; uninstall removes stubs of
any version. Symlinked entries and edited stubs stay untouched.

Deletes the finished init-prune quest.

Walkthrough

quest init now recognizes Quest skill stubs from any version by their embedded skill name and quest skill pointer. It removes recognized stubs for skills no longer shipped. quest uninstall removes recognized stubs across versions. Cleanup preserves unrelated files and skips symlink or non-regular stub entries. Tests cover legacy stubs, line endings, user-edited or mismatched skills, and empty-directory removal. Setup guidance and planning documents were updated.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 91e00

quest init and quest uninstall can delete a retired skill stub that the user has edited by adding frontmatter fields, which breaks the promise to leave edited stubs untouched. A filesystem error during one stub removal can also leave uninstall half-finished. Tighten the stub matcher and make uninstall continue past individual failures before merging.

Skill frontmatter has only ever held `name` and `description`, so a stub
with any other field, such as `allowed-tools`, was edited by a user and
stays put on init and uninstall.

Queued with /quest-merge at dd5e43a.

  • Since 91e0040: STUB in src/cli/setup.ts accepts only name and description frontmatter. Those are the only keys any skill asset has ever used. A stub with another field, such as allowed-tools, now counts as edited, and both init and uninstall leave it alone. There's a new test case for it.
  • Kept as is: uninstall still stops at the first failed stub removal. This predates the PR and matches every other write in setup.ts. Rerunning finishes the job (see the thread).
  • Local checks: just check and just test pass (744 passed, 2 skipped). quest check --base origin/main is ok, and Codex round 2 at this head found nothing.

Every turn now names the merge base of HEAD with the base's tip. Codex's
`exec review --base` and Claude Code's `/code-review` both get the merge
base, and the follow-up and later-round prompts name
`git diff <merge-base>..<head>`. In #337, Codex's findings turn
had no range to go on. It diffed the base's tip, which the instructions
called "the base commit", against the head, and so it reported main's newer
code as reverted.

`--branch <name>` keys the review session by a branch other than the
checked-out one. A detached HEAD requires it. A checkout of a branch that
another worktree holds can then continue that branch's session.
