Finishes quest/m0/model-routing/implementer.md: every PR body names its size and each implementing session's harness, model, and effort, including the PRs and notes the land fixer and kix runner write, so the model check and quest usage can audit the rankings from the PR record. Commits carry no model trailers (see Decisions).

Summary

  • quest context (assets/CONTEXT.md), Reviews: keeps the one ## Models definition moq-dev/quest#493 landed and settles its line format: Size: M, and one Implementer: Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, high effort line per session, which each session adds when it first pushes, so a quest /quest-iterate finishes on another model lists both. It names where each harness exposes these values: Claude Code knows its model and exports CLAUDE_EFFORT; Codex records model and effort in the last turn_context of its rollout, found by CODEX_THREAD_ID; Grok records model_id and reasoning_effort in its session's chat_history.jsonl, found by GROK_SESSION_ID. A value the agent cannot find is written unknown.
  • Land fixer (src/cli/land-fix.ts, src/cli/land-fixer.ts): its result now carries effort beside agent and model, and every place the daemon credits the fixer in PR text names all three, such as mechanical fix by codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort in a PR's ## Review, its notes and handbacks, and the (written by ...) line of its own PRs. The model comes from --model on its command line, else the model: line Codex prints in its stderr header, else unknown; the effort is --effort, or unknown when --agent-arg replaces Codex's arguments.
  • kix runner (src/runner/): deliver adds the session's Implementer: line to the body's ## Models section (creating it when absent) of the pull request it opens or updates, and the runner's system prompt tells the agent to write only Size: there. Each adapter's Running.ran() reports the model and effort at that moment:
    • Claude Code: the model from stream-json's system/init event, and the effort from a PreToolUse hook on the kix tools that writes CLAUDE_EFFORT into the account's home.
    • opencode: providerID/modelID and variant of the session's latest message, which is the assistant message calling deliver.
  • kix Worker (cloudflare/src/github/service.ts): when a later session delivers on the job's existing pull request, kix carries that body's Implementer: items into the new body, so a session that continues another's job adds to the record rather than replacing it. The record's helpers live in src/github/models.ts, shared by the runner and the Worker.
  • The quest file is deleted, along with its links. Model check, quest usage, and Route quests to models by size now say audits read the PR record, not commit trailers.

Public API: the land fixer's result JSON gains an optional effort field, and its attribution text changes from agent / model to agent, model, effort effort. The runner's Running interface gains ran(). kix now carries the existing pull request's Implementer: lines into a redelivered body; no wire change between runner and kix.

Decisions

  • How should moq-dev/quest#494 continue after the design checkpoint? (maintainer, /quest-complete, 2026-11-04). Six Codex rounds, four of them edge cases in rewriting Git trailer blocks, and squash merges drop branch trailers from main, so audits read the PR record anyway.

    • ✅ Drop commit trailers; the PR record only. This revises the 2026-11-04 /quest-plan decision to add Agent-Harness/Agent-Model/Agent-Effort commit trailers. src/cli/trailers.ts and its tests, the fixer's commit rebuilding and SHA remapping, and the quest context commit-trailer rule are deleted. The ## Models rule stays, and the land fixer and kix runner report their harness, model, and effort "into the PR record where they write PR text (the fixer's handback/result comments or bodies, the runner's PR body or comments)", keeping the runner's per-adapter reporting "only as far as that record needs it".
    • Merge as is
    • Keep agent-written trailers but drop the fixer's rebuilding
  • Round-3 design checkpoint, settled by the maintainer in /quest-complete on 2026-11-04 (one finding left: kix iterate/merge jobs on an existing PR record no Implementer: line):

    • ✅ Merge as is, and plan recording kix iterate/merge sessions as its own quest
    • Rejected: add a kix PR comment in this PR; accept the gap

Choices made without asking

  • The record's section is ## Models, the name moq-dev/quest#493 defines; this PR merged it and keeps one definition.
  • The kix runner writes the Implementer: line rather than the agent, since a sandboxed CLI may not reach its own session files, and the runner already knows the harness. It reads the values when deliver runs, not from the event stream: opencode's message.updated event and the MCP tool call travel on separate connections, so an event-based read could lose the race. Claude Code shows its effort only to hooks, and CLAUDE_EFFORT is empty in SessionStart and UserPromptSubmit hooks and set in PreToolUse (tested live in an earlier round), so the hook on the kix tools records it just before deliver reads it. Hooks run outside the sandbox, so the file sits in the account's home, which the agent cannot reach.
  • A value the runner cannot read, or one that does not fit a single line, is written unknown, as the rule says for agents. opencode without a variant records effort unknown.
  • Out of scope and unchanged:
    • kix iterate and merge jobs write no PR text at all (kix refuses a body on a job's existing pull request), so they add no Implementer: line. See Waiting.
    • quest land apply and quest land's own merge commits name no agent, since no agent writes them.

Validation

  • just check and just test pass on head 5c9e4cc8 (1077 passed and 5 skipped, plus 537). That head merges origin/main at moq-dev/quest#493, which deleted the finished Review by size quest; the merge drops it and this PR's quest file, and keeps quest review: pick the reviewer and effort by PR size #493's ## Models definition with this PR's line format.
  • Tests:
    • test/land.test.ts: the fixer's result records the model from Codex's header and its effort, and author() renders codex, header-model, high effort; the recorded agent, model, and effort appear in the PR's ## Review line.
    • cloudflare/test/seed.test.ts: a second session's delivery keeps the first session's Implementer: line.
    • test/runner.test.ts: the fake Claude reports a model in init and runs the settings' PreToolUse hooks with CLAUDE_EFFORT, and its delivered body gains ## Models with - Implementer: claude, claude-test, high effort. The fake opencode serves its latest assistant message, and a resumed session's delivered body gets its line inside the agent's existing ## Models section, beside Size:.

Waiting

  • Maintainer: should kix record iterate and merge jobs' sessions too? Today kix writes no PR text on a job's existing pull request (cloudflare/src/jobs/publish.ts, GitHubService.deliver), so per the checkpoint's scope ("where they write PR text") those sessions leave no Implementer: line, and /quest-iterate sessions are exactly the second implementers the record exists to catch. Simply editing the body there would make the App its last editor, which voids an author's own ## Review record (cloudflare/src/github/review.ts). Options:

    1. (recommended) Land this PR as is and plan the kix path as its own quest: record the session in a PR comment that audits also read, or an edit that keeps the author's review record valid. It needs its own design and touches the Worker's publication API.
    2. Add it in this PR: kix posts a comment carrying the Implementer: line when an iterate or merge job delivers.
    3. Accept the omission.

Check: the maintainer picks one in this PR.

Review

mechanical fix by codex / Codex: Removed the stale Required link and empty heading for the completed implementer quest; passed quest --root /work check --base base --branch quest/m0/model-routing/implementer, bun run build, bun run check, bun run test; in cloudflare: bun run build, WRANGLER_SEND_METRICS=false bunx vitest run --sequence.seed=1793839663982, WRANGLER_SEND_METRICS=false bun run seeded --check. (head dda75a3)

mechanical fix by quest land watch: merged main at 89ac47f7ac9e936ac935ae011e05ce2d39fc85c7 with the quest merge driver (head 0512883)

mechanical fix by codex / Codex: Merged base, preserved both documentation changes, and migrated the PR model lookup and fixture to the base OpenCode API; passed bun run build, bun run check, bun run test; in cloudflare: bun run build, bunx tsc --noEmit, bunx vitest run test/seed.test.ts. (head 3f27b2f)

Codex gpt-6.1-sol, high effort, round 3 of a new session (quest review --new after the design change), head 5c9e4cc851e450084434f27509eada88fd6c6f2e: one finding open, put to the maintainer under Waiting. This is the session's design checkpoint, so iteration stopped here.

  • Round 1 (69b378e7): two findings.
    • kix iterate and merge jobs record no implementer: open, under Waiting.
    • A later session's delivery replaced the body and dropped earlier Implementer: lines: fixed in 5c9e4cc8. GitHubService.deliver carries the existing pull request's Implementer: items into the delivered body, with a test in cloudflare/test/seed.test.ts.
  • Rounds 2 and 3 (5c9e4cc8): the same iterate/merge finding. The reviewer accepts that ## Waiting records it accurately, but it stays open until the maintainer decides.

Follow-ups

  • The kix path for iterate and merge jobs, if the maintainer picks option 1 under Waiting. Recommendation: plan it.

Every agent commit names its harness, model, and effort in Agent-Harness,
Agent-Model, and Agent-Effort trailers, and every PR body names its size
and each implementing session in a ## Models section beside ## Review.

quest context tells agents to add both and where Claude Code, Codex, and
Grok expose their model and effort. The land fixer rebuilds the commits
its agent made with the trailers, since its Codex never reads quest
context, and the kix runner adds them to every message it publishes, from
Claude Code's init event and a hook that sees CLAUDE_EFFORT, or from
opencode's assistant messages.

Reviewed changes — reviewed head 4653791 against main (bef18d3), the net effect of 9 commits (two are merges of origin/main):

  • Model record rules in quest context (assets/CONTEXT.md): commits should now end with Agent-Harness, Agent-Model, Agent-Effort trailers, and PR bodies get a ## Models section (Size:, one Implementer: line per session) that the review rule can read for --exclude-model.
  • src/cli/trailers.ts (new): one git interpret-trailers --no-divider call places an UUID marker where Git's trailer block ends, old Agent-* trailers (case-insensitive, folded continuations included) are dropped from exactly that block, and the new trailers take the marker's place — so they join an existing Co-Authored-By block and never promote body paragraphs to trailer blocks.
  • src/cli/land-fix.ts: after the fixer agent exits, quest land fix rebuilds the agent's commits with the trailers using commit-tree, keeping tree, parents, authorship, and dates; the branches pointing at them move, and SHAs in the result's prose are remapped old→new.
  • src/cli/git.ts: git() gained an optional env override, which the fixer uses for author/committer identity.
  • kix runner (src/runner/): adapters expose ran() ({model, effort}), and every published commit message gets the trailers. Claude Code reads the model from stream-json's system/init and the effort from PreToolUse/Stop hooks writing CLAUDE_EFFORT into the account's home; opencode reads providerID/modelID and variant from assistant message.updated events.
  • Quest-file cleanup: implementer.md is deleted and every link to it removed; review-effort.md now points the record prose at ## Models.

Verification I ran on the head: node_modules/.bin/tsc for both tsconfigs, prettier over the changed files, bun run --silent quest check --base origin/main (77 documents ok), node_modules/.bin/vitest run on test/trailers.test.ts (5 passed), test/runner.test.ts (71 passed), and the new fixer-trailers test in test/land.test.ts. I also confirmed the shape opencode reads (info.role, providerID, modelID, variant?) matches the installed @opencode-ai/sdk v2 types, and that commit-tree preserves the raw dates exactly as GIT_*_DATE='@<seconds> <TimeZone>' passes them (seconds and timezone both survive).

Design change: drop the Agent-Harness/Agent-Model/Agent-Effort commit trailers and record models in the PR record only (maintainer, /quest-complete design checkpoint, 2026-11-04). This revises that day's /quest-plan pick of commit trailers: six Codex rounds went mostly to edge cases in rewriting Git trailer blocks, and squash merges drop branch trailers from main, so audits read the PR record anyway.

  • Deleted: src/cli/trailers.ts and its tests, the land fixer's commit rebuilding and SHA remapping, and the quest context commit-trailer rule.
  • Kept: the ## Models rule (size, plus one Implementer: line per session), with where each harness exposes its model and effort.
  • The land fixer names its harness, model, and effort wherever the daemon credits it in PR text; the kix runner adds its session's Implementer: line to the ## Models record of the PR body it delivers.
  • Rejected: merging as is; keeping agent-written trailers but dropping the fixer's rebuilding.

The next review starts a new session with quest review --new.

(Written by Claude Opus 5.5 with high effort)

The Worker carries the Implementer lines of the job's existing pull
request into the body a later session delivers, so a session that
continues another's job adds to the ## Models record rather than
replacing it. The record's helpers move to src/github/models.ts, shared
by the runner and the Worker.

Reviewed changes — incrementally re-reviewed head 5c9e4cc8 against main (bef18d3), the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 4653791 (commits bd669a9, 69b378e, 5c9e4cc):

  • Dropped commit trailers per the design checkpoint: deleted src/cli/trailers.ts and its tests, the land fixer's commit rebuilding (trailed(), the commit-tree/update-ref path, and git()'s env override) — the PR record is now the only audit source, and every doc that pointed at trailers (assets/CONTEXT.md, quest/m0/*, quest/m1/*) was updated consistently with no stale references.
  • src/github/models.ts (new): shared ## Models helpers — implementers() parses the record's Implementer: lines, withModels() appends a line (deduping exact matches) and creates the section when absent. Covered: empty/filled section, CRLF bodies, and dedupe.
  • kix Worker keeps earlier implementers (cloudflare/src/github/service.ts): deliver now carries the existing pull request's Implementer: lines into the delivered body before the BODY_LIMIT re-check, so a later session's record adds to rather than replaces the previous sessions'. Covered by the new cloudflare/test/seed.test.ts case.
  • kix runner writes the record instead of trailers (src/runner/): Running.ran() became async; deliver adds the session's Implementer: line to the body (#harness from adapter.name, field() guards values to unknown); the system prompt tells agents to write only Size: there. Claude's effort now comes from the PreToolUse hook alone (the Stop hook is gone) reading system/init's model; opencode reads the latest assistant message via client.session.messages({sessionID, limit: 1}) at deliver time instead of racing the event stream, falling back to unknown — limit fetches the most recent messages per opencode's server docs, so the at(-1) read is the one calling the tool.
  • Land fixer records its effort (src/cli/land-fix.ts, src/cli/land-fixer.ts): results carry effort (--effort, else unknown with replaced arguments) and the model falls back to the stderr header; author() now renders agent, model, effort effort in every attribution the daemon writes into PR text.

Verification on this head: tsc for both configs plus prettier (bun run check), bun run --silent quest check (75 documents ok), and the affected suites — test/land.test.ts + test/runner.test.ts (279 passed) and cloudflare/test/seed.test.ts (14 passed).

The open design question (kix iterate/merge jobs record no implementer today because they write no PR text) is already accurately parked under Waiting in the PR body for the maintainer to decide; nothing in these commits worsens it.

quest land watch: the merge queue removed this pull request at 5c9e4cc because it conflicts with main (merge_conflict).

The land fixer works on it in the background, and the watcher re-enqueues it at the back of the queue once it is fixed or judged flaky, or hands it back here with what it needs.

  • opencode adapter migrated to the installed @opencode/client 2.1.1 API (src/runner/opencode.ts): the model read moved from client.session.messages(...) to client.message.list({sessionID, limit: 1, order: "desc"}) (GET /api/session/:id/message with limit/order), reading type: "assistant" and model: {id, providerID, variant}, and stopping switched from session.abort to session.interrupt. I verified against the installed client's generated code: both called methods exist there (and the order: "desc" query parameter is supported by the route's SessionMessagesQuery), while session.abort and client.session.messages no longer do — so the prior call sites would have thrown at runtime. The migration was warranted, and the test fakes now serve the matching routes and shape.
  • Merge conflict resolutions for the Model record (assets/CONTEXT.md, quest/m0/model-routing/README.md, quest/m1/{model-check,usage}.md): main's ## Review score wording is kept (including "A review counts for the head whose SHA it names"), and every doc that main still pointed at commit trailers is rewritten to "the PR record alone, without commit trailers" with the #494 checkpoint as the source — matching what this PR's earlier commits did. The removed review-score and implementer.md links are consistent with the deleted quest file.

Verification on this head: bun run check (both tsconfigs + prettier) ✓, bun run --silent quest check (73 documents ok) ✓, test/runner.test.ts (74 passed), test/land.test.ts (208 passed), cloudflare/test/seed.test.ts (14 passed, after bun run --cwd cloudflare build), and tsc --noEmit in cloudflare ✓.

The open design question (kix iterate/merge jobs record no implementer today) remains parked under Waiting for the maintainer; nothing in these commits changes it.

quest land watch: the merge queue removed this pull request at 3f27b2f because its merge_group build failed (failed_checks).

The land fixer works on it in the background, and the watcher re-enqueues it at the back of the queue once it is fixed or judged flaky, or hands it back here with what it needs.

codex / Codex land fixer note:

The queue failed because test/review.test.ts > a quest branch is reviewed at its quest's size on the base, which its own change cannot lower exceeded 5000ms. This PR changes neither that test nor the review implementation it exercises. The unchanged pinned head passed all 1080 CLI tests and all 538 Worker tests locally, plus builds and CLI TypeScript/format checks. Requeue unchanged; the review timeout appears flaky.

quest land watch: re-enqueued this pull request at 3f27b2f, at the back of the merge queue, unchanged, since the land fixer judged the failure flaky: bun run test: test/review.test.ts > a quest branch is reviewed at its quest's size on the base, which its own change cannot lower.

The tested-base merge on this head pulled in a plan quest from main whose ## Required entry links the quest this PR deletes — quest check --base origin/main fails on head 0512883 right now, so landing this PR as is would leave main with a permanently dangling required link.

Reviewed changes — incrementally re-reviewed head 0512883, the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 3f27b2f: one commit, quest land's merge of tested base 89ac47f.

  • Merged main into the branch: the only conflict resolution is in quest/m0/model-routing/README.md, where the merge correctly drops this PR's implementer.md bullet and keeps main's kix-sessions.md bullet. Everything else main brought in (the #498 guide tweak, #503's LIMIT classification, #497's queue-watcher quests) applied cleanly and is now part of the merge base, so it also drops back out of the PR's net diff — no PR-authored code changed or needs re-review.
  • New blocker found in the merged tree: quest/m0/model-routing/kix-sessions.md (landed on main in #504) requires the quest this PR deletes. Detail below.

⚠️ The merged-in plan quest requires the quest this PR deletes

quest/m0/model-routing/kix-sessions.md:54 carries a ## Required entry linking /quest/m0/model-routing/implementer.md, the file this PR deletes. On head 0512883, bun run --silent quest check --base origin/main fails with two errors: "link does not resolve: /quest/m0/model-routing/implementer.md" and "requires /quest/m0/model-routing/implementer.md, which is not a quest document". If the daemon's gates don't catch it, the PR lands anyway and main is left failing quest check for good — the link target stops existing. A repo-wide grep confirms this is the only remaining reference to the deleted quest.

Technical details
# kix-sessions.md requires the quest this PR deletes

## Affected sites
- quest/m0/model-routing/kix-sessions.md:52-54 — `## Required` entry opens with its quest link, `/quest/m0/model-routing/implementer.md`, which this PR deletes (see the deleted hunk of quest/m0/model-routing/implementer.md in the PR diff). The file arrived via merge commit `0512883` (main at `89ac47f`, PR #504) and is not itself a diff line against the new merge base, which is why there is no inline anchor.
- Verified failing: `bun run --silent quest check --base origin/main` → "quest: quest/m0/model-routing/kix-sessions.md:54: link does not resolve: /quest/m0/model-routing/implementer.md" plus the "requires ... not a quest document" error.

## Required outcome
- `quest check` (plain and `--base origin/main`) must pass on the PR head, and on main after this PR lands.
- The `## Required` entry cannot be kept linkless: a Required entry must open with its quest link per `src/core/rules.ts`, so the entry must be deleted and the build-on note folded into prose (the Goal already says the plan completes #494's `## Models` record).

## Suggested approach (optional)
- Edit `quest/m0/model-routing/kix-sessions.md` in this PR (the file is already in the merged tree): remove the `## Required` entry, optionally naming the dependency in the Plan's "Decided 2026-11-04" paragraph, which cites #494.
- Alternatively land a tiny fix-up on main before this PR merges, so the deletion never coexists with the required link.

codex / Codex land fixer note:

Removed the dependency on the completed implementer quest and its now-empty Required heading from kix-sessions.md. This reconciles the newer base quest with the deletion in this PR, without changing runtime behavior. The CLI suite passed 1081 tests (5 skipped), and the Worker suite passed all 538 tests. The first Worker run timed out in test/github.test.ts > signed GitHub webhooks > acknowledges and drops every delivery from an owner off the allowlist (5000ms); that file and the full suite both passed on rerun with seed 1793839663982, without changes to code or timeouts.

Reviewed changes — incrementally re-reviewed head dda75a3, the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 0512883: one commit, dda75a3 ("Remove completed implementer quest dependency").

  • Removed the stale required link (quest/m0/model-routing/kix-sessions.md): the ## Required entry pointing at /quest/m0/model-routing/implementer.md — the quest file this PR deletes — is deleted, resolving the ⚠️ finding from the prior review. The build-on context is still covered by prose: the Goal cites #494 and the Implementation guidance already names the ## Models record the plan builds on.

Verification on this head: bun run --silent quest check --base origin/main passes (75 documents ok), and a repo-wide grep finds no remaining reference to model-routing/implementer. The merge base is unchanged at 89ac47f, so nothing outside this one commit moved; with the last review finding addressed, the PR is mergeable.
