feat(ts): translate the rest of a boxed slice's impls - #387
Quest quest/m3/ts-boxed-slice-rest.md: these Box<[T]> and Box<str> impls were refused as "unsupported call":
Clone::clone_from of a boxed slice or boxed text.
AsRef and AsMut of a Box<T>.
TryFrom<Box<[T]>> and TryFrom<Vec<T>> for Box<[T; N]>, and their TryInto.
From<Box<str>> for Box<[u8]>, and str::into_boxed_bytes.
No consumer calls them yet. The quest plans them as part of std.
Approach
clone_from of a Box<[T]> maps in mir/call.rs, because it rewrites the place the &mut borrows, as String's edits do. New rt.boxSliceCloneFrom and rt.byteBoxSliceCloneFrom follow std's body:
Same lengths: clone_from_slice, which clones each element and drops the old one it replaces.
Different lengths: *self = source.clone(), which clones everything first, then drops the old elements in order.
The element clone comes from the existing clone_into, so an element whose clone_from is its own is refused with a span, as slice::clone_from_slice already does. Box<str>'s clone_from just writes the text.
AsRef and AsMut of a box return what it holds, as Deref does. A &mut to a value that needs a place already went through call.rs.
TryFrom into a boxed array checks the length against N. A match gives Ok of the elements, through the existing vec_boxed for a Vec. Otherwise it gives Err with the operand unchanged. Bytes become a Uint8Array view of the same buffer, since std keeps the allocation.
A Box<str> becomes rt.stringAsBytes of its text.
Capacity:
TryFrom<Vec<T>> either shrinks the Vec into an array, which has no capacity, through vec_boxed, or returns the Vec unchanged, its capacity kept.
clone_from over vector elements goes through clone_from_clones, which #372 as landed left alone, so Box<[Vec<T>]>::clone_from still translates. Where the lengths match, it clones each element whole, each holding at least its length, which is all std guarantees of Vec::clone_from (see ## Decisions).
Tests: new lang case boxes::impls, differential against native wasm32:
Each impl over u8, u16, (u8, u16), String, and a type that logs its clones and drops.
Empty input and every length.
clone_from through a local, a generic, a struct field, and a Vec element.
TryFrom both matching and missing N, including N = 0.
To check that the case catches bugs, I swapped the clone and the drop in boxSliceCloneFrom: 23 cases then differed from native.
Not covered: pointer identity after TryFrom. Taking a *const [u8; N] into a boxed slice needs a const-generic slice-to-array conversion, and having one anywhere in lang makes the translator refuse unrelated byte-array references across the crate. The details are in the review record below.
Impact
Translator output: the impls above now translate.
Runtime (additive): rt.boxSliceCloneFrom and rt.byteBoxSliceCloneFrom.
No breaking change, so there is no MIGRATE.md entry.
Alternatives
Mapping clone_from in library.rs. A mapping gets the value a &mut points at, not its place, so it can't replace a box with one of another length.
The quest "std's conversions of a reference" held these, but #386 finished and deleted it. They need a new quest through /quest-plan:
Clone::clone_from of a Box<T> with a sized T that drops, such as Box<String>. std forwards it to T's clone_from. feat(ts): translate std's conversions of a reference #386's generic *self = source.clone() covers a T that needs no drop. It refuses the rest, since clone_from_clones looks through only Option for a type that drops.
clone_from of vector elements. Settled by the maintainer on 2026-11-01, recorded in #386:
Refuse a type that holds a capacity, or map std's allocation reuse: not taken.
✅ Within the rule, no change: std documents no capacity for Vec::clone_from beyond "avoids reallocation if possible", so under the 2026-11-01 "std's guarantees only" rule an element's capacity of at least its length is correct. Box<[Vec<T>]>::clone_from translates as is.
Converting a boxed byte slice to a boxed array copied the buffer, but std keeps the allocation. It now uses rt.byteSliceView.
The suggested pointer-identity test was not added. Adding b.first_chunk().map(|c| c as *const [u8; 4]) to the lang crate makes translation fail elsewhere, at shapes.rs:276 and :2230, hashes.rs:243-244, and keys.rs:685, with "a reference through which a raw pointer may be made into [u8; 1]...". slice::as_ptr of bytes is not mapped.

Walkthrough
The change adds TypeScript lowering support for boxed-slice cloning, boxed-array conversions, and boxed-text-to-byte conversions. Rust and expected TypeScript fixtures add coverage for these operations. The harness registers the boxed-slice case and updates zeros and capacity case registrations. Documentation updates the fixture description and removes the boxed-slice task and plan.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 74dcc
The boxed-array conversion lacks regression coverage for preserving its allocation. This is a bounded testing gap suitable for owner awareness or follow-up, rather than an established runtime blocker.

Explanation
The title "feat(ts): translate the rest of a boxed slice's impls" matches the main change. The PR adds translation of boxed-slice and boxed-str impls (clone_from, AsRef/AsMut, TryFrom/TryInto to boxed arrays, From Box<str> to Box<[u8]>) in the TypeScript backend, and the raw summary confirms these changes in ts/src/lower/library.rs, ts/src/lower/mir/call.rs, and ts/runtime/rt.ts. The title is specific and concise, and a teammate scanning history would understand the primary change.

The task fixture also fails in isolation: `35417 cases, 3059 panics, 628 differences` against native Rust. That needs behavior review, so I’ll hand PR 387 back, discard the uncommitted merge attempt, and record the failing command and diagnostic.

Conflicts with the base: quest/m3/ts-ref-conversions.md, ts/fixtures/lang/expected/harness.ts, ts/fixtures/lang/src/harness.rs
I tried merging base, retained both harness cases, and preserved the new documentation note while accepting deletion of the completed quest. The merged translator built with cargo build --locked -p rust2-ts; tsc -p runtime and cargo test --locked -p rust2-ts --test runtime passed (8 tests). All commands ran in ts/ with the pinned nightly toolchain.
UPDATE_EXPECT=1 cargo test --locked -p rust2-ts --test fixtures lang -- --exact --nocapture failed before snapshot generation:
error: rust2-ts: Clone::clone_from of std::boxed::Box<[u8]>, whose clone_from is its own, which is not supported yet
There were 11 such errors across the new boxed-slice tests. The general clone handler added by base precedes and intercepts the PR's specialized boxed-slice handler in ts/src/lower/mir/call.rs. This needs a reviewed translator dispatch change beyond mechanical conflict resolution. Please integrate the handlers and rerun snapshot and differential tests. The trial merge was aborted; the PR branch remains at its pinned head.
codex / Codex land fixer: After resolving the merge conflicts, `cd ts && UPDATE_EXPECT=1 cargo test --locked -p rust2-ts --test fixtures lang -- --exact --nocapture` failed: error: rust2-ts: `Clone::clone_from` of `std::boxed:. Recommendation: Re·solve the three merge conflicts and review the clone dispatch integration so boxed slices reach their specialized handler, then regenerate snapshots and rerun the language differential test.
Conflicts with the base: quest/m3/ts-ref-conversions.md, ts/fixtures/lang/expected/harness.ts, ts/fixtures/lang/src/harness.rs
Order the boxed-slice `clone_from` arm before #386's generic one, which
refused `Box<[T]>` and `Box<str>` as a type whose `clone_from` is its own.

Assert buffer identity in the boxed-array success case.
The successful Box<[u8]> to Box<[u8; 3]> conversion at ts/fixtures/lang/src/boxes.rs:724 checks only the bytes. The boxed helper reads only the contents of the converted box, and run returns only the output bytes. A lowering that copies the buffer and keeps the same bytes passes this case unchanged. This PR fixes buffer preservation, so this case does not guard that fix.
If the translator can lower it, record the source address before the conversion and compare it with the address of the converted box. The existing ptr::eq use in ts/fixtures/lang/src/pointers.rs compares raw pointers to arrays. The ptr::eq calls in ts/fixtures/lang/src/conversions.rs compare references through std::ptr::from_ref, not boxed arrays, so they are not a direct model for this case. Confirm that the translator handles the address capture on Box<[u8]> and the converted Box<[u8; 3]> before adding the check. The PR description reports that a const-generic conversion blocks translation elsewhere in the lang crate. If the translator cannot express the check, record this gap rather than add an untranslatable case.

Review comment at @ts/fixtures/lang/src/boxes.rs at line 724:
Extend the boxed-array success case around Box::try_from to compare the source
buffer address with the converted box’s address, using a pointer comparison
supported by the translator. First confirm address capture works for both
Box<[u8]> and Box<[u8; 3]>; if the translator cannot express this check, record
the gap instead of adding an untranslatable case.
