feat(ts): hold std's capacity guarantees for Vec, VecDeque, and BinaryHeap, with pushes untouched - #372
moq-net reads vector capacity. cache.rs decides when to prune by it (hold_head, prune_held, shrink_to), and so do broadcast.rs, resume.rs, and group.rs. The model's census refused Vec::capacity ×3, VecDeque::capacity ×2, Vec::reserve ×2, and Vec::shrink_to ×1. Separately, rt.vecCapacity treated every vector an extend started from as full, so its capacity overflow panics differed from std after a reserve or a pop.
The first version of this PR carried std's exact capacity everywhere. That made push/vec 1.2-2.0x slower and push/deque 1.0-1.4x, from reading and updating the capacity on every push.
This replaces the 2026-10-28 "std's exact growth, everywhere" decision:
We don't need std's exact capacity. Translate std's documented guarantees only: capacity() >= len, and at least what with_capacity and reserve ask for. std leaves its growth strategy unspecified.
Capacity must still double when the vector reallocates.
The quest file is deleted because this PR finishes it, so the decision is recorded here and in ts/README.md. The open quests that relied on the old decision now flag it:
hashbrown.md: whether a map's capacity must still be exact.
ts-deque-slices.md: as_slices splits where std's capacity puts the head.
Approach
push is exactly as on main (v.push(x), rt.dequePushBack(q, x)), with no capacity read or write.
Storing a capacity. A Vec (a JS array), a VecDeque, and a BinaryHeap's vector have an optional cap. Only these operations set it:
with_capacity;
reserve and reserve_exact (always stored, so the floor they ask for holds as the length drops);
shrink_to and shrink_to_fit;
clone (exactly its length);
collect and extend (where they reserve);
vec![x; n] (exactly n).
Otherwise it is absent. From<Vec<T>> for a VecDeque, a BinaryHeap's into_vec, and *v = w carry it over. An rt.ByteVec's capacity stays its buffer's length.
Reading a capacity.capacity(), and a reserve deciding whether to grow, first catch the stored value up: while it is below the length, double it, starting from std's least non-zero capacity for the element size (8, 4, or 1). From empty, a run of pushes reads std's exact doubling sequence without push touching anything.
Growing.reserve(n) past that capacity grows to max(2 * cap, len + n, least), as std's grow_amortized does, and reserve_exact to exactly len + n. Each panics with capacity overflow where std's does. An extend or collect reserves from the real capacity instead of taking the vector as full.
Element size. Only functions that read or set a capacity take the element size.
Dropped from the first version
The unsure flag on a Vec<u8> taken from bytes, and its rust2-ts: throw.
The rt.VecDequec field that every push kept. A deque has an optional cap only where an operation set one, as an array does.
The element-size argument on push, insert, extend_from_slice, vec!, heapPush, dequePushBack, and the rest. Pushes are back to plain v.push.
vecHold before every shortening, vecIntoBoxed, and the in-place collect capacity tracking: iterToArrayInPlace, iterToByteVecInPlace, byteVecIntoIter, sourceCapacity, and the iterator clones' own capacity.
The new refusals of slice::fill, clone_from_slice, and LinkedList::clone_from over vector elements. clone_from_clones is main's again, so they translate as clones, whose capacity of exactly the length meets the guarantee.
Tests
The capacity::{vecs, deques, heaps, collects} lang cases are differential against native wasm32 over u8, u16, (u64, u8), [u64; 160], and (). Each tracks what std fixes after each step. It compares the exact capacity while only steps std's doubling decides have run. These are:
pushes, insert, push_front, and extend;
with_capacity, reserve, and reserve_exact, including amounts past what the vector may hold and near usize::MAX, which panic with capacity overflow;
shrink_to and shrink_to_fit;
clone, and a heap's from/into_vec/into_sorted_vec.
Any other step leaves only std's guarantee to check: capacity >= max(len, floor), where the floor is what with_capacity and reserve asked for since the last shrink. The steps that check only the guarantee, each because std's value there comes from something this contract leaves out:
pop, truncate, remove, swap_remove, clear, retain, drain, dedup: std keeps the old allocation. The translation recomputes the doubling from the shorter length, unless a stored cap (from with_capacity or reserve) covers it.
extend_from_slice: std reserves the slice's length at once, which can grow past doubling. The translation pushes each element.
into_boxed_slice().into_vec(): std shrinks to the length. The translation keeps the array and any stored cap.
An in-place collect from a vec::IntoIter, and VecDeque from its into_iter: std reuses the source's allocation. The translation collects anew.
vec![a, b, c], VecDeque::from([..]), and a heap's append: std allocates exactly, or swaps the larger buffer in. The translation infers by doubling.
A heap whose PeekMut was forgotten: it leaks all but the top, into a fresh array.
New cases also run each step after a reserve or reserve_exact that needed no room. They caught round 2's finding: 19 cases failed before the fix.
Census, model, on today's main: 363 → 355 refusals (−8). These are the same eight capacity, reserve, and shrink_to calls #372 removed (365 → 357 at its older base). moq-net: 1122 → 1110. kio: 110, unchanged.
Push cost

Impact
Translator output: capacity, reserve, reserve_exact, shrink_to, and shrink_to_fit of Vec, VecDeque, and BinaryHeap now translate, and with_capacity panics past what the vector may hold.
Runtime, breaking (MIGRATE.md entry):
rt.vecCapacity, rt.vecReserve, rt.vecReserveExact, and rt.dequeReserve are now the std methods of a vector, element size last, instead of the extend arithmetic.
rt.vecPush and rt.vecGrow are gone.
rt.dequeClone and rt.heapClone take the element size after the clone function.
Runtime, additive: rt.Capped, rt.vecWithCapacity, rt.vecShrinkTo, rt.vecExact, the rt.byteVec* and rt.deque* capacity functions, rt.dequeFromVec, rt.heapWithCapacity, rt.byteVecToVec, and rt.byteVecFromVec.
An rt.VecDeque and a JS array as a Vec may have an optional cap. Hand-made ones without it still work.
Alternatives
std's exact capacity everywhere, the first version: 1.2-2x slower pushes. The maintainer chose this contract instead.
Storing the doubled capacity on each removal (vecHold): exact after pops, but a write on every shortening, for a value std doesn't guarantee.
Capacity in a side table (WeakMap): a lookup on every read, and no cheaper to store.
Follow-ups
Quest The rest of a vector's methods: append, resize, split_off, extend_from_within, try_reserve, and Vec::from(VecDeque), still unmapped. clone_from, fill, and clone_from_slice are no longer listed: they translate.
Open for the maintainer, flagged in their quests: whether hashbrown's capacity must still be exact, and whether VecDeque::as_slices needs the deque's exact capacity.
Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, a new session for the reworked design.
Round 1, head 5fd3d99, three findings, all refuted by the 2026-11-01 decision (guarantees only):
Capacity after a removal: std guarantees only capacity() >= len there, and storing it on each removal is the vecHold the decision dropped.
into_boxed_slice().into_vec() not exactly the length: shrink_to_fit lets the allocator leave more, so capacity() >= len is the guarantee.
extend_from_slice and vec![a] inferred by doubling: std's docs allow bulk insertion to over-allocate, and say capacity is at least what was requested.
Round 2, head 5fd3d99, one finding, fixed in 4301ad8. A reserve that needed no room didn't store its capacity, so a clear lost the floor. The new cases for each step after a reserve failed 19 times before the fix.

Walkthrough
The runtime now tracks capacity for vectors, byte vectors, deques, and heaps. Compiler lowering maps collection capacity operations and conversions to the updated runtime APIs. New fixtures test capacity behavior against Rust, and existing generated fixtures use the capacity-aware constructors and conversions. Documentation and migration notes describe the API changes. The benchmark adds a push workload for vectors and deques.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review a39a6
The new capacity support has bounded reporting errors after heap cloning and boxed-slice conversions, plus extra copying during heap clearing and draining. These warrant correction or explicit follow-up, but the evidence does not establish broader collection-content failures.

Cover spare-capacity VecDeque::from in case 6 of collects.
Case 6 builds the deque from bytes.clone(). The clone has capacity equal to its length, so the deque path never receives spare capacity. No differential case passes a spare-capacity Vec through dequeFromVec and reads the resulting capacity. A regression that makes dequeFromVec report length would leave the current expected output unchanged.
Build the deque input from its own Vec::with_capacity(n + 5), filled with the same bytes. Keep the heap conversion on the original bytes, which stays clone-free. Then regenerate ts/fixtures/lang/expected/capacity.ts.

Rework of #372 to the 2026-11-01 maintainer decision: a Vec, VecDeque, or
BinaryHeap stores a capacity only where an operation sets one, and reading
it doubles the stored value while short of the length, so a run of pushes
reads std's doubling without push touching it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
For quest/m3/ts-vec-rest.md: #387 translates Clone::clone_from of a Box<[T]>. When the lengths match, it writes each element through clone_into/clone_from_clones. That means this PR's vector refusal in clone_from_clones also refuses Box<[Vec<T>]>::clone_from. Please add it to the quest's list beside slice::fill, clone_from_slice, and LinkedList::clone_from of vectors.
capSet skipped storing a capacity the lazy doubling would read at the
current length, so a clear after push and reserve(3) lost the floor
reserve guarantees. reserve and reserve_exact now always store theirs.

feat(ts): carry std's capacity through every Vec, VecDeque, and BinaryHeap
feat(ts): hold std's capacity guarantees for Vec, VecDeque, and BinaryHeap, with pushes untouched
Nov 1, 2026
Design change: per the maintainer's decision of 2026-11-01, a Vec, VecDeque, and BinaryHeap now hold only std's capacity guarantees (at least the length, and what with_capacity and reserve ask for), doubling as they grow. A capacity is stored only where an operation sets one, and reading it doubles the stored value up to the length, so push is as on main. The exact-capacity machinery is dropped: unsure, the deque's c, the size arguments on pushes, vecHold, the in-place collect tracking, and the new fill/clone_from_slice refusals. Pushes bench within A/A noise of main in every engine. The review restarted with quest review --new.

Avoid the extra reference-array copy in heapClear and heapDrain.
heapClear and heapDrain call h.d.splice(0). This allocates a second array that holds every removed element reference. The base code instead swapped h.d to [] and kept the old array, so this copy is new in this change. The copy is linear in the number of references, and element payloads are not duplicated. heapDrain also copies eagerly, where the base iterator read the old array lazily.
A plain swap to [] would avoid the copy, but it would drop the stored capacity. Capacity is kept as a cap property on the array object, and splice(0) preserves that object. A new [] has no cap, so capacity read after clear or drain would report 0. No safe copy-free alternative is established by the current code.

Keep the capacity of a cloned BinaryHeap after it is emptied.
vecExact stores no capacity when it equals the length-inferred value, so a cloned heap's exact capacity is lost on the next length drop. BinaryHeap::clone passes the element size to heapClone, which calls vecExact. For a BinaryHeap<u8> with eight elements, capacity() after clear() then returns 0, not 8. Use capHold in vecExact, which stores the value regardless of length:

Set non-byte Vec capacity to its length in vec_boxed.
For non-byte elements, vec_boxed returns the same array, so a cap set by with_capacity survives into_boxed_slice. boxed_vec returns that array unchanged, so capacity() after into_vec reports the old capacity, not the length. For example, Vec<u32> with capacity 100 and length 0 reports 100 after the round trip. Std reports 0. Set cap to the length in the non-byte branch of vec_boxed, for example by calling vecExact with the element size.

Hand-made ones without it still work.Alternatives
vecHold): exact after pops, but a write on every shortening, for a value std doesn't guarantee.WeakMap): a lookup on every read, and no cheaper to store.Follow-ups
append,resize,split_off,extend_from_within,try_reserve, andVec::from(VecDeque), still unmapped.clone_from,fill, andclone_from_sliceare no longer listed: they translate.VecDeque::as_slicesneeds the deque's exact capacity.Comments
Box<[Vec<T>]>::clone_from: resolved by the rework.clone_from_clonesis main's again, with no vector refusal, so feat(ts): translate the rest of a boxed slice's impls #387'sBox<[Vec<T>]>::clone_fromtranslates whichever PR lands first. Nothing to add to the quest, which dropsclone_fromtoo. (written by Claude Opus 5.5)Review
