Problem

std::mem::needs_drop::<T>() was an "unsupported call", though size_of::<T>() translates as its value. std::any::type_name::<T>() and type_name_of_val, the other per-instance constants of a type, were refused the same way.

Approach

Map each in library.rs beside size_of to the constant rustc gives the instance: Ty::needs_drop under the body's typing env, which is what the intrinsic evaluates to, and rustc_const_eval::util::type_name, which the intrinsic and PhantomData's Debug already use. needs_drop is rustc's answer, not whether translation emits a drop, so a String, whose JS value drops nothing, still says true and a caller branching on it runs the same arm.

The manual fixture gains manual::needs_drops, differential against native wasm32: needs_drop of values JS copies, String, references, unsized str, [String], and dyn Debug, smart pointers, Options and Results, tuples, [String; 0] (false) and [String; 2], ManuallyDrop, MaybeUninit, PhantomData, Cell, a type with its own Drop, a fn pointer, generic instances, and closures by what they capture; a generic body that branches on it as std's collections do; and type_name and type_name_of_val of a crate type, a std generic, a closure, a slice, and a generic function's two instances.

Consumer: std's collections and crates generic over their items, such as hashbrown, branch on needs_drop; moq reaches them through its dependencies.

Impact

  • The translator's output: mem::needs_drop, any::type_name, and any::type_name_of_val translate as constants instead of being refused. No public Rust API change.

Alternatives

  • Lowering std's bodies: each is a const { intrinsic } block, so it would need the same constant per instance anyway.

Follow-ups

  • TypeId::of is refused too, but TypeId has no JS value yet, so it is a design of its own rather than a constant to fold in here.

Review

Codex gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, via quest review, round 2 on head 062e8b48fad846914c2181dc1d43856aa05477a1: no findings. 0fbb25e0ae26507e936fc5957459740ea911f167 adds only a conflict-free merge of origin/main.

Walkthrough

The compiler now lowers mem::needs_drop to a boolean literal and lowers any::type_name and any::type_name_of_val to string literals. The manual fixture adds Rust and TypeScript coverage for drop requirements, drop counts, and type names. The quest documentation removes the deferred item and its proposal.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 8d588

The change is mergeable with normal checks. Adding generic type-name coverage would improve regression protection but is not required to correct current behavior.

Explanation

The title names the main change: the TypeScript translator now maps std::mem::needs_drop and std::any::type_name (and type_name_of_val) to per-instance constants instead of refusing them. The title matches the changeset in lib.rs/library.rs, the manual fixture, and the removed deferred-item docs. It is specific and follows conventional commit style.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 6 functions across 6 files.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description directly explains the changes to translate mem::needs_drop, any::type_name, and type_name_of_val as per-instance constants. It also describes the related manual fixture tests and expected impact.

Nitpick Exercise typename through a generic function with two instantiations.

147-150: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value

Exercise type_name through a generic function with two instantiations.

Every type_name and type_name_of_val call in manual.rs uses a concrete type. The generic helpers exercise only needs_drop. A regression that computes a generic function's type name once and reuses it for every instantiation would produce the same output as before, so this fixture would still pass. Add a generic helper that returns type_name::<T>(), call it with two distinct types, and regenerate the expected snapshot.

🧪 Suggested fix
/// Whether the value's type needs dropping.
 fn needs_drop_of<T>(_: &T) -> bool {

+
 		type_name_of_val(&named),

Update the manual.rs fixture to exercise type_name from a generic helper
instantiated with two distinct types, alongside the existing concrete type_name
and type_name_of_val calls. Regenerate the expected snapshot to include both
results.

quest land watch: the merge queue removed this pull request at 8d58823 because its merge_group build failed (failed_checks).

The land fixer works on it in the background, and the watcher re-enqueues it at the back of the queue once it is fixed or judged flaky, or hands it back here with what it needs.
