Problem

quest/m3/ts-unsafe/unsafecell.md: rust2-ts refused UnsafeCell::raw_get, from_mut, and replace as unsupported calls. It also refused raw_get(&c) as "a raw pointer to UnsafeCell<T> behind a reference".

Cell::replace, set, take, and update of a tuple or a crate struct rebound the cell's value, so a pointer Cell::as_ptr gave before kept the old object. let c = Cell::new((n, 1)); let p = c.as_ptr(); let old = c.replace((9, 9)); (*p).0 + old.0 gave n + n in TS, 9 + n natively. Cell::swap was refused.

Approach

  • raw_get(p): get of the cell p points at. A raw pointer to an UnsafeCell<T> is an rs.Place of where the cell is kept, so it is get(p.v) (ts/src/lower/pointer.rs). It translates only when every origin of p is a known place of the cell (raw_origins in ts/src/lower/mir/call.rs): &raw or a reference of a local or a field, through copies and casts, through a deref of a raw pointer whose own origins are known, or MaybeUninit::as_ptr/as_mut_ptr of one. Anything else is refused with a span: a parameter, a Vec's or a slice's pointer, null, and pointer arithmetic, which may point where no cell is yet or past the cell it was made of. Each origin is judged as get of it is (made_out_of_step), so a cell assigned again while the pointer may be read is refused.
  • raw_get(&c): MIR makes _3 = &raw const (*r); raw_get(move _3). A new pass, find_raw_cells (ts/src/lower/mir/mod.rs), finds such a pointer when raw_get reads it once (move or copy, as c as *const _ passes it) and ends the block that made it, with only storage markers between. That assignment stays unlowered, the same way find_halves' temporaries do, and the call lowers to get of the reference's cell, judged as get is. get through a reference that reborrows a raw pointer ((*p).get()) is judged by each origin of the pointer where all are known, and by *p otherwise, as on main.
  • replace(v): ptr::replace of get's pointer. ptr::replace's and ptr::swap's bodies are now shared replace and swap helpers. Where the pointer is the object or array a write lands in, the value read before the write is copied as objectCopy copies (copied_out). One a pointer is the place of is read as on main, so a Box keeps its allocation.
  • from_mut(&mut x): Cell::from_mut's one_of, now keyed by owner. A value JS copies is cellOfPlace of its place. An object or array is cellOfPlace(partPlace(obj)), so get points at the object itself and a whole write lands in it. An object a pointer is the place of, such as a Vec, a String, or a pinned Box, is refused with a span: a write through get's pointer lands in it, so a value replace read before would change too, or be a copy at another address. A plain Box is not refused, as it has no object kind: its cell is of the place it is kept in, which a write rebinds. Cell::from_mut does the same for an object or array a pointer is, and keeps cellIn, which reads a copy, for other objects such as a Vec. Every from_mut, slice::from_mut and array::from_mut too, refuses a pinned Box (boxed_object), whose copy is another allocation. So do get_mut and as_mut_unchecked of a cell of one, which lend it as the object a mem::replace through them would copy.
  • A whole write through those helpers of a value that keeps cells (keeps_cells: a cell, or a tuple or crate struct a pointer is the object of with a field that keeps cells) writes into each existing rs.Cell in place, through cells at any depth and the cell fields of tuples and structs, so a pointer saved into an inner cell sees the new value. The value read out before gets cells of its own (copy_kept), as does ptr::read's. Memory not written yet, which ptr::write and MaybeUninit::write may fill, has no cell to keep and takes the new one. An assignment through a raw pointer (*c.get() = UnsafeCell::new(2)) writes the same way (ts/src/lower/mir/place.rs), as it read stale too, without a refusal. The write analysis counts Cell's and UnsafeCell's writes, and ptr::write, replace, and swap of such a value, the same way (replace_kept), so a pointer into a kept cell is no longer refused for them. It still counts an assignment through a raw pointer as replacing, which is sound but refuses more than it must. Any other part is still given the new value's, one object deep. A whole write of a value holding a cell in a MaybeUninit or ManuallyDrop (wraps_cells), through these helpers, Cell's writes, or an assignment through a raw pointer, is refused with a span, as it would put another cell in place of one a pointer may point into.
  • Cell::replace, set, swap, take, and update of an object or array (ts/src/lower/task.rs) write where as_ptr points through the same replace, swap, read, and write helpers, so an earlier pointer sees the new value. Values JS copies, values of no bytes, and arrays of arrays keep cellReplace, cellSet, and cellUpdate. A Cell of arrays of arrays may be Cell::from_mut's cellOfArraySlice (moq-dev/rust2#608), which reads a copy, so it is written whole as on main, and an UnsafeCell::from_mut of one is refused. take makes its Default before it copies out the value it replaces. Cell::swap now translates, but of an array it is refused, as cells of arrays may partially overlap, which Rust panics on. A Cell compares copies of its values (rs.cellBy's copy), as get gives them, so a comparison that writes the cell sees what it held. The write analysis (copy.rs) counts each of these, and UnsafeCell::replace, as a write into the held type, so get copies a value later written in place.
  • get and raw_get of a cell of a slice give an rs.RawSlice, not the rs.Slice it holds, which failed type-checking. Only a caller can give one, as translated code can't unsize a cell.
  • Also as_ref_unchecked and as_mut_unchecked, stabilized in 1.100 with replace (unsafe_cell_access). They map as into_inner and get_mut do, and are added to lends, keeps, and derives.
  • MaybeUninit::assume_init_mut is refused where a &mut to the MaybeUninit is an rs.Place but one to what it holds is the object, as of an UnsafeCell<u32>: get_mut of it emitted TypeScript tsc rejected (arithmetic on an rs.Cell).
  • Differential cases: pointers::raw_cells covers each accessor for a number, a struct Rust copies, an object holding an Rc, a tuple, and arrays of bytes and of u16, plus pointers through a raw pointer to a struct's fields and MaybeUninit::as_ptr, elements of an array, drop counts across replace, and the allocations of Boxes and Pin<Box>es kept through ptr::replace, ptr::swap, UnsafeCell::replace, UnsafeCell::from_mut, and Cell::swap (ptr::eq(before, &*old)). The new pointers::cell_writes covers each of Cell's five writes on a tuple, a copied struct, an Rc-owning struct, and arrays of bytes and u16, each read back through an earlier as_ptr, and on from_mut cells of a tuple and an array. The new pointers::nested_cells covers UnsafeCell::replace, ptr::replace, ptr::write, ptr::swap, Cell's writes, and assignments through a raw pointer of cells of cells (two and three deep), of a cell of a tuple, a tuple and a struct holding cells, and a Cell of a cell, each read back through a pointer saved into an inner cell; a ptr::read copied out before a write; ptr::writes into memory not written yet, and raw_get of a MaybeUninit's pointer before one. Writing a kept cell's value by rebinding it again fails 20 of its inputs. The new reject cases alloc::cell_pointer_reassigned and alloc::cell_raw_reassigned pin reassigned cells (and a pointer to the cell or else null or a parameter, now refused as of unknown origin), alloc::cell_raw_unknown round 3's three findings (an empty Vec of cells' as_mut_ptr, a write through spare capacity, .add(1) across an array of cells) and a parameter, alloc::uninit_cell_lent the assume_init_mut().get_mut(), alloc::cell_of_arrays the arrays of arrays, alloc::cell_of_objects the refused from_muts, alloc::pinned_lent the refused get_mut and as_mut_unchecked, and alloc::wrapped_cells the refused writes of wrapped cells: UnsafeCell::replace of a MaybeUninit of a tuple holding a cell (which panicked the translator) and of a ManuallyDrop of a cell, ptr::write of a tuple holding a wrapped cell, Cell::set, and an assignment through a raw pointer. Undoing the in-place Cell writes failed 143 cases and the address case 96 (measured in round 2). Copying a pinned Box out again fails 117 of 5055. Without the slice fix, tsc rejects the output.

How this divides with raw-behind-ref

This PR does not translate &raw const *r itself. It sees through that pointer only when raw_get, right after, is its one reader, so no pointer is ever made. Every other &raw const *r of an UnsafeCell, such as one kept, passed on, or read later, is still refused (the reject case alloc::cell_pointer_kept pins one made before a call) and stays quest/m3/ts-unsafe/raw-behind-ref.md's. Once that quest lands, raw_get of its pointer works through the general get(p.v) path. find_raw_cells then only makes the output shorter and could be dropped.

Decisions

  • Fix Cell's writes after as_ptr here: ✅ in this PR, writing in place through the helper UnsafeCell::replace shares (rejected: a follow-up quest). The maintainer picked this on 2026-11-07.
  • Cell::swap: ✅ translate it with the shared swap helper (rejected: leave it refused). The brief listed it among the methods that swap in a new object, but it was refused outright; with the shared helper it costs a few lines.
  • Round 3's design checkpoint, where copied_out copied a pinned Box and lost its allocation identity: ✅ narrow the scope. UnsafeCell::from_mut of an object a pointer is the place of is refused with its reason, ptr::replace and ptr::swap read such types without copying, as on main, and the Vec/String from_mut cases are dropped for reject cases and a Box identity case (rejected: copy only types that are their own object, plus Box cases; merge as is with a follow-up). The maintainer picked this on 2026-11-07; recorded in a Design change: comment.
  • Which types the refusal covers: ✅ those whose object a whole write lands in (write_in), which are Vec, String, and a pinned Box (rejected: also a plain Box, which the brief named). A plain Box has no object kind, so its cell is of its place and a write rebinds it. The differential case pins its identity through UnsafeCell::from_mut, so refusing it would drop a working translation.
  • Cell::from_mut: ✅ refuse it of a pinned Box, keep it of a Vec or String (rejected: refuse all three; leave it as is). Its cellIn copies each read, which loses a pinned Box's identity through replace (as on main) and the new Cell::swap. A String's or Vec<u8>'s copy is unobservable, as comparing pointers to bytes is refused, and lang/conversions covers both.
  • The new review session's findings on a pinned Box (round 1 feat(bench): reproducible build-speed benchmark #2, feat(uniffi): import UniFFI and moq's generators #3; round 2 feat(bench): reproducible build-speed benchmark #2): ✅ refuse each new path that would copy one (from_mut of any kind, as_mut_unchecked, and get_mut with it), and suggest a follow-up for the root (rejected: refute them as pre-existing). A differential probe on origin/main showed get_mut, array::from_mut, and a &mut Pin<Box<T>> parameter already lose the allocation through mem::replace, since write_in makes a whole write through any &mut to a pinned Box land in its allocation. The reviewer held that the paths this PR adds need refusing anyway.
  • raw_get's provenance (round 1 chore: bootstrap the setup and seed the quest tree #1, round 2 chore: bootstrap the setup and seed the quest tree #1): ✅ follow every assignment of the pointer and judge each place, for raw_get and for get through a reborrowed pointer (rejected: refuse every raw_get of a pointer of unknown provenance). Superseded for raw_get by round 3's checkpoint below; get through a reborrowed pointer still judges *p where an origin is unknown, as on main.
  • raw_get of a pointer with known and unknown origins (round 3 chore: bootstrap the setup and seed the quest tree #1, finding): ✅ judge each known origin, and *p too when one is unknown (rejected: refuse raw_get of a pointer with any unknown origin). The maintainer picked this on 2026-11-07. Superseded by the next decision, which deletes this mixed-origins handling.
  • UnsafeCell::replace of a cell holding a cell (round 3 feat(bench): reproducible build-speed benchmark #2, finding): ✅ write into the existing inner cell in place, in this PR, for cells at any depth and cells in tuples and structs inside the cell, through the write helpers Cell's writes share (rejected: refuse replace when the value holds a cell; merge as is and plan the in-place write as a follow-up). The maintainer picked this on 2026-11-07; recorded in a Design change: comment. It needs no change to how a cell is represented. The same helpers serve ptr::write, ptr::replace, and ptr::swap, so they keep cells too, and the reject cases kept::kept_written and kept::kept_swapped now translate correctly and are dropped.
  • Round 3's design checkpoint of the second review session, three raw_get findings on 982a9a9 (an empty Vec of cells' as_mut_ptr, a write through spare capacity, .add(1) across an array of cells): ✅ A, refuse unknown origins. raw_get translates only when every origin of its pointer is a known place (&raw or a reference of a local or field, or MaybeUninit::as_ptr), and is refused with a span otherwise, including parameters, Vec and slice pointers, null, and pointer arithmetic; it returns to the eager form, and the mixed-origins handling, the lazy place, and rawUnsize's pointer-to-no-memory case are deleted. Each finding is now a reject case in alloc::cell_raw_unknown. Rejected: B, a lazy runtime pointer that finds the cell when used, creates it on a write, and keeps its array index, as that is a new pointer form, which m3's unsafe policy (rule 3) refuses without a consumer; C, merging with three run-time throws. This reverses round 2's rejection of A, which came before the policy. The in-place writes into a cell holding a cell stay, through get, Cell's writes, and the pointer helpers. The maintainer picked this on 2026-11-07; recorded in a Design change: comment.
  • Follow-ups: ✅ drop whole writes through &mut Pin<Box<T>>, counting raw-pointer assignments as in-place writes in the refusal analysis, and keeping nested cells through &mut/Box writes and mem::replace/swap/take, as they extend unsafe with no consumer (rejected: plan each). ✅ Refuse MaybeUninit::<UnsafeCell<u32>>::assume_init_mut().get_mut(), whose TypeScript failed tsc, in this PR with a span and the reject case alloc::uninit_cell_lent (rejected: plan it). The maintainer picked these on 2026-11-07.
  • Arrays of arrays after merging moq-dev/rust2#608: ✅ main's representation wins. Cell::from_mut of one is main's cellOfArraySlice, Cell's writes of one keep main's cellReplace, cellSet, and cellUpdate, and get's pointer into one is main's arraySliceFrom. UnsafeCell::from_mut and Cell::swap of one are refused with a span (alloc::cell_of_arrays), as a cell of one may read a copy, so a write through its pointer would land in the copy (rejected: write Cell's arrays of arrays in place through as_ptr, which reaches that copy).
  • Nested cells in a MaybeUninit or ManuallyDrop (round 3 of the third review session, a design checkpoint: a whole write of one of a tuple or struct holding a cell, such as UnsafeCell<MaybeUninit<(UnsafeCell<u32>, u32)>>::replace, panicked the translator): ✅ B, refuse such whole writes with a span (wraps_cells), through UnsafeCell::replace, Cell's writes, the pointer helpers, and an assignment through a raw pointer, and revert round 2's look-through in kept_cells with its differential cases, which existed only for it (without it, 133 of 5559 nested_cells inputs differed). The in-place writes of nested cells outside these wrappers stay. Rejected: A, normalizing the wrapper before projecting fields, as each new shape the traversal meets is another case reviews would keep finding; C, dropping in-place nested-cell keeping, as it reverses the maintainer's earlier decision. The coordinator decided this on 2026-11-07 under m3's unsafe policy (rule 3: refuse with a span what doesn't fit the existing pointer forms) while the maintainer was away; recorded in a Design change: comment.
  • CodeRabbit's three findings (review): ✅ each reproduced and fixed, with a differential, reject, or type-check case.

Choices made without asking

  • Review round 1 of the third session, Cell::swap of overlapping array cells: refused Cell::swap of any array with a span rather than detect partial overlap at run time, which needs the array views' internals. Only arrays' cells can partially overlap, as a tuple's or struct's is one whole JS object. pointers::cell_writes drops its two array swaps.

  • Included as_ref_unchecked and as_mut_unchecked. The quest names only three accessors, but these two are the rest of UnsafeCell's unsafe accessors, stabilized in the same feature as replace, and each was a list entry.

  • Handled raw_get(&c) with the narrow MIR pass above rather than translating &raw const *r, as the brief asked.

  • ptr::replace and ptr::swap now copy the value read before the write with objectCopy rather than snapshot where the pointer is the object or array, so they hold where a write lands in place whatever the write analysis knows.

  • get of a Cell of a tuple or struct now copies it, as the analysis counts Cell's writes into it (copy$tuple2_u8_u8(counts.v)[0] in manual/uninit.ts). That copy is what keeps a value read out from changing under a later in-place write.

Caused by

  • moq-dev/rust2#519 - made Cell::as_ptr UnsafeCell::get's pointer, the object a Cell of an object holds, while Cell's writes kept rebinding that value.
  • get of a cell of a slice giving an rs.Slice is as old as UnsafeCell::get's mapping.
  • moq-dev/rust2#386 - made Cell::from_mut of an object read a copy with cellIn, which gives a pinned Box another allocation.

Impact

  • Public API: the translator's output only. UnsafeCell::raw_get, from_mut, replace, as_ref_unchecked, as_mut_unchecked, and Cell::swap now translate. UnsafeCell::from_mut of a Vec, String, or pinned Box is refused. Of a pinned Box, Cell::from_mut, slice::from_mut, array::from_mut, and get_mut are now refused too: each translated on main and lost the allocation through a whole write. get through a raw pointer to a cell assigned again later is refused, as is raw_get of a pointer not made of a known place of its cell, UnsafeCell::from_mut and Cell::swap of arrays of arrays, and MaybeUninit::assume_init_mut where a &mut to what it holds is the object but one to the MaybeUninit is a place, and a whole write of a value holding a cell in a MaybeUninit or ManuallyDrop. A pointer into a cell a value keeps is no longer refused where the only whole writes of it go through Cell's or UnsafeCell's writes or ptr::write, replace, or swap, which now write into the cell in place. Cell's writes of an object or array, Cell::from_mut of one, ptr::replace, and ptr::swap emit different code, and get of a Cell of an object may copy it. Snapshots change in borrows, conversions, dyns, locals, manual, sorts, task/drops, and pointers.
  • Runtime: cellIn drops its depth argument, as arrays no longer reach it.
  • No wire impact.

Alternatives

  • Make a raw pointer to UnsafeCell<T> the rs.Cell itself (Pointee::Object). That would turn every &raw const *r of a cell into r, but it changes every existing *const UnsafeCell pointer, and it is raw-behind-ref's general case.
  • Making the pointer an alias slot. Rejected: a dereference of an alias still projects .v through the raw pointer's Pointee::Place, which would read past the cell.
  • Keep cellIn for every Cell::from_mut and write Cell's objects through it. Rejected: cellIn reads a copy, so as_ptr and an in-place write would reach the copy, not the borrowed value.
  • Write a Cell in place only where the program calls as_ptr on its type. Rejected: it needs a second analysis pass for a copy that only types written in place pay.

Follow-ups

None. The three earlier follow-ups were dropped and the assume_init_mut one is fixed here (see Decisions).

Validation

  • just ci on be3f4bf (origin/main merged at 6b7301a): lint, quest check (40 documents ok), just ts check, 8 unit tests, 89 fixture tests (including reject, reject_census, and spans), and 10 runtime tests passed.

No actionable findings in the current delta. The raw-cell shortcut requires a single definition/use in the call's own block and only storage markers/Nops between pointer creation and raw_get. The same-block guard now precedes statement slicing, and the new kept-pointer rejection case covers the previously reported cross-block failure. Other raw pointers continue through the general cell-location projection.

The shared replace helper snapshots the old value before writing, uses the existing in-place object/array writes, and returns the undropped old value. UnsafeCell::from_mut retains object identity via partPlace while the existing Cell path keeps its copying getter. The new fixture/snapshots exercise scalar, struct, tuple and array accessors, pointers retained across replacement, borrowed places, and Rc-backed drop counts. I also checked the lending/origin bookkeeping and unchanged runtime helpers those mappings use.

Direction: retain the narrow shortcut and differential/rejection coverage; no code changes requested. The separate Cell::replace aliasing issue documented in the description is outside this delta and is not claimed fixed here.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static review. I did not run quest context, compilation, differential tests, mutation tests, runtime tests or CI, and have not independently verified the reported passes. GitHub currently reports mergeable=false, so integration still needs resolution/rechecking. This is not a passing-build or merge-readiness claim.

Walkthrough

The translator adds UnsafeCell pointer mappings for raw access, mutable-reference access, and replacement. MIR analysis tracks qualifying raw cell pointers and lowers their access calls. Pointer writes and Cell operations now include paths that preserve nested cell identity. Language fixtures cover raw cell access, replacement, cell writes, and nested cells. Rejection fixtures add raw-pointer and pinned-value cases, and update expected pointer diagnostics.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 982a9

This change adds UnsafeCell raw-accessor translation and cell-preserving pointer writes. The earlier concerns about null pointers, cell slices and reassigned cells are addressed at the current head. No concrete merge-blocking defect remains in the supplied evidence.

Add a nonzero reference-based raw_get operation.

The explicit scripts use only zero for this branch, so its XOR writes do not change the cells. Adding 8 exercises nonzero writes, including the observed second wide-array element.

…lice, and reassigned cases

Cell::replace, set, swap, take, and update of an object or array now write
into what Cell::as_ptr points at, sharing ptr::replace's and ptr::swap's
helpers, which copy the old value out as objectCopy does. Cell::swap
translates. UnsafeCell::raw_get keeps a pointer to no memory as it is, gives
a raw slice of a cell of a slice, and through a reference is refused where
the cell is assigned again, as get is.

Incremental review of a0ebb88 against base e7a02cf, following review 5809666328 at 9f0ad6b.

[P2] Preserve allocation identity when moving boxed values out
The open issue already recorded in the PR's Waiting section is still present at ts/src/lower/pointer.rs:1204. copied_out uses objectCopy(p.v) whenever write_in(ty) succeeds. write_in explicitly erases Box and Pin wrappers, so this also copies the allocation behind a Box or Pin instead of moving its handle. ptr::replace then returns a different allocation, and ptr::swap copies both sides. For example, retaining a pointer to a nonzero-sized tuple inside a pinned box, replacing the Pin<Box<_>> through its raw slot pointer, then comparing that pointer with the returned old box's pointee should preserve identity in Rust; this path returns a fresh JS array. This is a regression in the shared pointer operations, not only a limitation of the new UnsafeCell API. Keep handle moves distinct from copying an in-place value and add boxed/pinned-box replace and swap regression coverage. The documented narrower-scope option can address this without expanding the new cell representation.

Other follow-up fixes inspected: raw_get's shortcut now applies the cell lifetime check, slice-valued cells produce RawSlice, and rawUnsize preserves null/dangling/address-only pointers before projection. The Cell write path and copy analysis now account for in-place object/array updates. No additional independent finding identified in those changes.

Direction: settle the recorded scope decision and fix the shared-helper regression before treating this as ready; the prior no-findings review does not cover this newly introduced behavior.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static, base-aware comparison and inspection of the lowering/runtime helpers and changed fixtures. The allocation-identity issue is independently supported by those code paths but was not executed here. No build, differential or mutation tests, runtime tests or CI were run; reported passes were not independently reproduced.

…ace of, and keep a Box's allocation through ptr::replace and ptr::swap

Narrows the scope per the round-3 design checkpoint: UnsafeCell::from_mut
of a Vec, String, or pinned Box, and Cell::from_mut of a pinned Box, are
refused with a span, and copied_out reads such types as main did, so a
Box keeps its allocation identity.

Design change: narrowing the scope, as the maintainer picked on 2026-11-07 at round 3's design checkpoint.

  • UnsafeCell::from_mut of an object a pointer is the place of (a Vec, a String, a pinned Box) is refused with a span: a write through get's pointer lands in the object, so a value replace read out before would change too, or be a copy at another address.
  • ptr::replace and ptr::swap read such types without copying again, as on main, so a pinned Box keeps its allocation (ptr::eq(before, &*old)).
  • Cell::from_mut of a pinned Box is refused too, as its cellIn copy loses the allocation through replace and the new Cell::swap. Of a Vec or String it keeps translating.
  • A plain Box is not refused: it has no object kind, so its UnsafeCell::from_mut cell is its place, which a write rebinds. A differential case pins that identity.
  • The Vec/String from_mut cases are replaced by the reject case alloc::cell_of_objects and Box/Pin<Box> identity cases in pointers::raw_cells.

Rejected: copying only types that are their own object, plus Box cases; merging as is with a follow-up.

The next review starts a new session with quest review --new.

Incremental review of 8e5d534bc7d988d9da6789d2435ef7c4a0f665c8 against base 33fa28d44897b72b403b182cd42bbe9862344936, following 5810487373. The base merge was separated from the branch's fixes.

The previous Box/Pin allocation-identity finding is addressed: copied_out no longer copies the allocation for a Pointee::Place, and the new fixtures compare retained pointers after replacement and swapping. The narrowed from_mut and mutable-accessor refusals cover the direct pinned-box paths.

Two blockers already recorded in this PR's Waiting section remain, independently corroborated by the source rather than presented as new discoveries:

  • P2: Keep known origins when another origin is unknown. call.rs:1460–1469 discards all accumulated places when one branch is a parameter or otherwise unknown. Lines 358–360 then validate only *p. Choosing between &raw const c and a supplied pointer, calling raw_get, then assigning a new cell to c can therefore leave the returned pointer reading the old value on the local branch. Retain the known places plus an unknown-origin flag, validate both, and add the mixed-origin rejection case.
  • P2: Preserve or refuse nested cell storage during replacement. pointer.rs:864–868 accepts UnsafeCell<UnsafeCell<u32>>::replace. A pointer from (*c.get()).get() retains the inner rs.Cell, but replacement assigns a different inner object to the outer cell's v. That pointer still reads 1 after replacing with an inner cell containing 2. The new accessor exposes an existing slot-rebinding limitation. Refuse the unsupported nested-cell case with a source span, including reachable equivalent cell writes, or preserve its storage identity; pin the chosen behavior with a regression case.

Direction: keep the allocation fix and resolve these recorded stale-read cases before landing. No additional independent finding established.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static inspection of the incremental changes, surrounding lowering/runtime code and fixtures. I read the pinned quest context as source but did not execute quest context, compilation, differential/mutation tests or CI. Reported test results were not independently reproduced. COMMENT only, not approval.

…nested cells through whole writes

`raw_origins` now returns the known origins along with whether any is unknown, so a
pointer to `c` or else null or a parameter still judges `c`, and `*p` too.

A whole write through the pointer helpers (`UnsafeCell::replace`, `Cell`'s writes,
`ptr::write`, `replace`, and `swap`) of a value that keeps cells writes into each
existing cell in place, through cells at any depth and the cell fields of tuples and
structs, so a pointer saved into an inner cell sees the new value. The write analysis
counts these writes the same way.

Design change: following the maintainer's 2026-11-07 picks on round 3's checkpoint.

  • raw_get: raw_origins now returns the known origins plus whether any is unknown. Each known origin is judged for reassignment, and *p is still judged when one is unknown. alloc::cell_raw_reassigned gains a pointer to c or else ptr::null(), and one to c or else a parameter.
  • Nested cells: a whole write through the shared pointer helpers (UnsafeCell::replace, Cell's writes, ptr::write, ptr::replace, ptr::swap) of a value that keeps cells writes into each existing rs.Cell in place. That covers cells at any depth and the cell fields of tuples and structs. The old value and ptr::read's copy get cells of their own. Memory not written yet takes the new cell. The write analysis counts these writes the same way, so kept::kept_written and kept::kept_swapped now translate correctly and leave the reject fixture. New differential case: pointers::nested_cells. No change to how a cell is represented was needed.

The next review starts with quest review --new.

An assignment through a raw pointer of a value that keeps cells writes into the
existing cells in place, as `ptr::write` does, so `*c.get() = UnsafeCell::new(2)`
leaves a pointer into the old inner cell reading 2. The write analysis still counts
such stores as replacing, which is sound.

… other parts

A cell not written yet is an `rs.Cell` of its value's placeholder, so a pointer
`UnsafeCell::raw_get` makes into it before `ptr::write` sees the write, which lands
in it. A copy of a value that keeps cells copies its other parts as a read does, so
a later write into one leaves the copy be.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ells assume_init_read reads

`UnsafeCell::raw_get` of a cell holding a value JS copies makes a place that reads the
cell where the pointer points as it is used, so memory holding no cell yet, such as a
`Vec`'s room past its length, works as in Rust. `MaybeUninit::assume_init_read` and
`ManuallyDrop::take` of a value that keeps cells give it cells of its own.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Incremental review of 982a9a9 against base afef6a8, following review 5812268993 at 8e5d534 and accounting for base changes.

Both blockers from that review are addressed in the inspected paths: raw_origins retains known places even when another origin is unknown, and the caller checks those places plus the unknown dereference; the rejection fixture includes the parameter/local mixture. Whole writes now preserve nested cells and tuple/struct cell fields, while copy_kept gives read-out values separate cells. The nested_cells fixtures cover replacement, swapping, writes, read-out snapshots, and direct raw-pointer assignments. The allocation-identity fix remains intact.

Three P2 failures already recorded in this PR's Waiting/Review sections remain corroborated by the source, not new discoveries:

  • pointer.rs:934 eagerly projects an aggregate cell's payload. raw_get(v.as_mut_ptr()).is_null() on spare capacity of Vec<UnsafeCell<(u32,u32)>> can access a cell that does not exist yet.
  • pointer.rs:923–930 defers a scalar read but its setter still assigns p.v.v without initializing p.v. raw_get(v.as_mut_ptr()).write(7) on spare capacity of Vec<UnsafeCell> therefore fails instead of initializing storage.
  • pointer.rs:932 replaces an array element's AtIndex with an ordinary place. Subsequent pointer arithmetic loses the original array; the runtime's elemOf treats it as a one-element allocation, so raw_get(a.as_ptr()).add(1) cannot preserve the Rust array access.

Direction: resolve the recorded raw_get scope decision and either refuse unsupported origins with source spans or preserve the underlying storage/provenance, with regressions for these cases. Recheck integration after merging the current ArraySlice base changes noted in the body. No additional independent finding established.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static comparison, surrounding source/runtime inspection, and fixture review. No compilation, differential tests, mutation tests, or CI run; reported results were not independently reproduced. COMMENT only, not approval.

UnsafeCell::raw_get now translates only when every origin of its pointer
is a known place of its cell: &raw or a reference of a local or field,
through copies, casts, and derefs of such pointers, or MaybeUninit::as_ptr.
A parameter, a Vec's or slice's pointer, null, and pointer arithmetic are
refused with a span. raw_get returns to the eager form; the lazy place,
the mixed-origins handling, and rawUnsize's pointer-to-no-memory case go.

MaybeUninit::assume_init_mut is refused where its &mut is a place but one
to what it holds is the object, as of an UnsafeCell<u32>.

From #608, arrays of arrays keep main's representation: Cell::from_mut of
one is cellOfArraySlice and Cell's writes of one rebind it. Its
UnsafeCell::from_mut and Cell::swap are refused, as the cell may read a
copy.

Design change: round 3's checkpoint of the second review session is settled as A, refuse unknown origins.

  • UnsafeCell::raw_get translates only when every origin of its pointer is a known place of its cell: &raw or a reference of a local or field, through copies, casts, and derefs of pointers made so, or MaybeUninit::as_ptr/as_mut_ptr of one. A parameter, a Vec's or a slice's pointer, null, and pointer arithmetic are refused with a span. That ends round 3's three findings statically, and each is now a reject case (alloc::cell_raw_unknown): an empty Vec of cells' as_mut_ptr, a write through spare capacity, and .add(1) across an array of cells.
  • raw_get is back to the eager form. The lazy place, the mixed-origins handling in raw_origins, and rawUnsize's pointer-to-no-memory case are deleted. The in-place writes into a cell holding a cell stay, through get, Cell's writes, and the pointer helpers.
  • Rejected: B, a lazy runtime pointer that finds the cell when used, creates it on a write, and keeps its array index, which is the new pointer form m3's unsafe policy (rule 3) refuses without a consumer; C, merging with three run-time throws. This reverses round 2's rejection of A, which came before the policy.
  • Follow-ups: whole writes through &mut Pin<Box<T>>, counting raw-pointer assignments as in-place writes, and keeping nested cells through &mut/Box writes and mem::replace/swap/take are dropped, as they extend unsafe with no consumer. MaybeUninit::<UnsafeCell<u32>>::assume_init_mut().get_mut(), whose TypeScript failed tsc, is refused here at translation time (alloc::uninit_cell_lent).
  • Merging moq-dev/rust2#608: main's representation of arrays of arrays wins. UnsafeCell::from_mut and Cell::swap of one are refused (alloc::cell_of_arrays), as its cell may read a copy.

The next review starts a new session with quest review --new.

… Cell copies, and refuse Cell::swap of arrays

raw_origins unwinds its cycle check, so two branches through one base
pointer both contribute origins. Cell::take makes its Default before it
copies out the value replaced. A Cell compares copies of its values, as
get gives them, so a comparison writing the cell sees what it held.
Cell::swap of an array is refused, as cells of arrays may partially
overlap, which Rust panics on.

kept_cells looks through the MaybeUninits and ManuallyDrops JS keeps as
what they hold, so a whole write of one holding a cell writes into the
cell in place, and a pointer saved into it sees the write.

Incremental review of 535c6af against base 5c9d405, following review 5813977571 at 982a9a9 and accounting for base changes.

The prior three raw_get findings are addressed by the narrower provenance gate: unknown origins now fail with a source diagnostic, and cell_raw_unknown covers spare Vec storage, initialization through that storage, array-pointer arithmetic and a supplied pointer. I also inspected the ArraySlice integration, Cell::take's Default-before-read ordering, copied Cell comparison operands, and refusal of Cell::swap on arrays.

[P2] Normalize or refuse wrapped aggregates before projecting kept fields
The blocker already documented in this PR's Waiting section remains supported by the source; this is not a new discovery. At ts/src/lower/pointer.rs:179, kept_cells unwraps MaybeUninit/ManuallyDrop and can return Fields for the inner tuple or struct. However, copy_kept (1502/1510) and write_kept (1455/1461/1463) pass the original wrapped type to object_field, whose dispatch at 1521–1525 expects a tuple or ordinary struct. A whole replacement of UnsafeCell<MaybeUninit<(UnsafeCell, u32)>> therefore reaches wrapper layout handling instead of the inner tuple fields and can panic during translation. The same mismatch applies to ManuallyDrop-wrapped aggregates.

Direction: settle the documented scope choice before landing. Either reject these whole writes with a source span consistently across the shared helpers, or normalize the type consistently before field projection and add wrapped tuple/struct regressions. Retain the previous allocation-identity and raw_get refusal fixes. No additional independent finding established in this pass.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static comparison and inspection of lowering, runtime changes and fixtures. No compilation, differential/mutation tests or CI executed; the PR's reported passes and panic reproduction were not independently run. COMMENT only, not approval.

… cells

Reverts 5c82333's look-through in kept_cells, which panicked projecting
fields of a wrapped tuple or struct. A whole write through the pointer
helpers, Cell's writes, or an assignment through a raw pointer of a value
holding a cell in a MaybeUninit or ManuallyDrop is refused with a span
(wraps_cells), as it would put another cell in place of one a pointer may
point into. The two wrapper cases leave pointers::nested_cells for the
reject case alloc::wrapped_cells.

Design change: round 3's checkpoint of the third review session is settled as B, refuse wrapped cells. The coordinator decided it on 2026-11-07 under m3's unsafe policy (rule 3: refuse with a span what doesn't fit the existing pointer forms) while the maintainer was away.

  • A whole write of a value holding a cell in a MaybeUninit or ManuallyDrop (wraps_cells in ts/src/lower/pointer.rs), through UnsafeCell::replace, Cell's writes, ptr::write, replace, and swap, or an assignment through a raw pointer, is refused with a span. The round 3 shape, UnsafeCell<MaybeUninit<(UnsafeCell<u32>, u32)>>::replace, no longer panics the translator.
  • Round 2's look-through in kept_cells is reverted with its two pointers::nested_cells wrapper cases. That differential fix (133 of 5559 inputs differed without it) existed only for the look-through, so none of it stays.
  • The new reject case alloc::wrapped_cells covers a wrapped tuple, a wrapped cell, a tuple holding a wrapped cell, Cell::set, and an assignment through a raw pointer.
  • In-place writes of nested cells outside these wrappers stay as they were.

Rejected: A, normalizing the wrapper before projecting fields (reviews would keep finding shapes); C, dropping in-place nested-cell keeping (reverses the maintainer's earlier decision). The next review starts a new session.

Incremental review of be3f4bf against base 6b7301a, following review 5814731614 at 535c6af. Base changes were separated from the branch's fix.

The prior wrapped-aggregate panic is addressed by the narrower refusal: kept_cells no longer unwraps MaybeUninit/ManuallyDrop before field projection. wraps_cells detects those wrappers along the cell/tuple/struct traversal, and the shared pointer write, Cell write methods and direct raw-pointer assignment paths emit a source diagnostic. The added wrapped_cells rejection fixture covers a wrapped tuple, wrapped cell, tuple containing a wrapper, Cell::set and direct assignment, with five expected diagnostics. The formerly accepted wrapper cases were removed from the differential fixture rather than represented as still supported.

No additional actionable finding established in this incremental change. Direction: retain this explicit scope boundary and the rejection coverage, together with the existing raw_get provenance refusals and allocation-identity fixes. Verify the rejection and differential suites on the final integration head before landing.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static comparison and source/fixture inspection. No compilation, differential tests, mutation tests or CI executed, and reported passes were not independently reproduced. COMMENT only, not approval.
