feat(ts): translate a raw pointer behind a reference - #621
Closes the quest quest/m3/ts-unsafe/raw-behind-ref.md, the last child of the ts-unsafe epic now that #625 landed the other, so both are deleted here; the epic's plan holds no other work, and what unsafe is left stays refused under m3's unsafe policy, which its former mentions in ts-model, ts-assoc-type-fields, and ts/README.md now name.
Problem
rust2-ts refused &raw const *r and ptr::read(r) where r is a reference to a value JS copies or to a library object (a raw pointer to `T` behind a reference, which is the object and not where it is kept). A reference is the value in JS, not where it is kept. At the moq pin this was all of smallvec's Drain::next/next_back (lib.rs:383, 397) and retain (1733, 1740), plus a duplicate message on moq-net's num_enum tag reads.
Approach
A raw pointer made from a reference (&raw const *r, a coercion or as, ptr::from_ref/from_mut, NonNull::from, Into<NonNull>) is now the place the body shows the reference borrowed:
an alias of a borrowed place: the pointer to that place, e.g. &a[i] as *const T is the rs.AtIndex of a[i];
the element Index::index/index_mut lends: &v[i] as *const T is arrayAsPtr(v.items, i), so add, sub, and offset_from move within v;
&*p or &mut *p of a raw pointer p assigned once: p itself (smallvec's retain).
Otherwise it is a place of its own, element 0 of an array of one:
a shared reference to a Freeze value, or to one whose layout keeps a tag or niche, which no UnsafeCell holds, such as an Option<Cell<u32>>: { v: r }, as ptr::from_ref already made, since a whole write through the pointer is undefined (smallvec's Drain);
a &mut to a library object, or a shared reference to one with interior mutability: an rs.placeIn, a runtime place that is the object and writes a whole value into it in place, as *r = v does. A type JS can't write into in place is refused with a span.
Every read that moves a value out copies it.ptr::read, replace, swap, and ptr::copy/copy_nonoverlapping, through any pointer, copy each object the moved-out value holds at any depth that a later write could change in place, as Rust's bitwise read gives a value of its own. copy.rs's struct copies (changes, shim, and Writes) now count a library object a whole write lands in (write_in): copied one object deep by rs.objectCopy, as replaceIn copies for mem::replace, with what it holds inline copied by its type too (a RefCell's, Mutex's, or OnceCell's value, a range's ends; a Cell is rebuilt as a new rs.Cell of its value, since Cell::from_mut makes one of another's place), while a Vec<u8>'s and a BytesMut's bytes, and what a Weak points at, stay shared as Rust shares them. A collection whose JS object keeps its length with its storage (a non-byte Vec, VecDeque, String, map, set, or list) is refused with a span wherever such a move would copy it (Translator::unsplit, checked on the unsafe ptr::read/replace/swap, ptr::copy, assume_init_read, and ManuallyDrop::take arms), as no JS copy splits from the original as Rust's does; a safe move, such as mem::replace, an Arc::make_mut move, or #625's Cell and UnsafeCell methods, which share read, replace, and swap, leaves nothing pointing into the original and keeps the shallow rs.objectCopy. A Pin is what it holds, as in JS. A whole write into an object (ptrWrite) also drops a field the new value lacks, such as a HashMap's capacity, unless the destination is a place of another class. Any other library object, a runtime wrapper whose inline state only its class knows, such as a LazyCell or a Peekable, is refused with a span wherever an unsafe move-out would copy it (a safe move copies it one object deep, as main does): where the crate writes into its type in place, compares pointers to it, it has interior mutability, or a type it is over could change. A map whose hasher could change counts as changing, so it is refused too. So is a closure whose copy Rust tells apart, and any coroutine. So a Vec<u8> read out through a pointer from a shared reference, through a cast to *mut MaybeUninit<Vec<_>> or ManuallyDrop<Vec<_>>, or inside an Option, tuple, or struct, keeps what it held after the original is written in place.
origin.rs sees the same pointers, so arithmetic the body shows leaving a place of its own is refused at translation rather than failing at run time (reject's new past_reference). From an array of one, every offset, wrapping or not, copy or write count, and slice length must be one the body fixes and that stays within it, and every read or write through such a pointer (ptr::read/write/replace/swap, as_ref/as_mut, or a *p deref) must be at its element, not one past it, or it is refused (beside_reference, unfixed_reference). A pointer from a reference to an Arc's value stays that value's one place, as arc_raw makes it, by ptr::from_ref, NonNull::from, or .into(). From/Into take these shortcuts only for std's reference-to-NonNull impl (the reference's pointee is the NonNull's, which any other impl would overlap), so a crate's own impl From<&T> for NonNull<U> runs as written. Following the place model, not #596's address ids. { v: x }.v folds to x, which also simplifies conversions' Box::into_raw/from_raw round trip.
origin.rs follows a pointer through a cast JS keeps the same (to a MaybeUninit or ManuallyDrop of its pointee, and cast, cast_mut, cast_const), so a read one past a reference through one is refused too. origin is the one place a chain of single assignments shows: a pointer from a reference that a branch or loop assigns more than once is an array of one of its own, so offset_from against another pointer from that reference throws at run time, as main's ptr::from_ref and &raw const of a local already do (Throw only where Rust panics now names it). A move-out copy of an uninitialized value treats what a cell or library object in it holds as uninitialized too, through a Pin, ManuallyDrop, or Wrapping-like wrapper. An assignment's member target folds only to the place an rs.place reads, as { v: x } holds a copy of x.
Impact
Translator output: these pointers translate instead of being refused. ptr::from_mut, NonNull::from, and .into() of a &mut to a library object now give an rs.Place that writes in place, as every other *mut to one is.
Translator output: a read that moves out a library object the crate writes into in place now calls a copy$<Type> shim (rs.objectCopy), as does each ptr::copy of one. That is O(length) where Rust's read is O(1) for a Vec<u8> or BytesMut. The same move of a non-byte Vec, VecDeque, String, map, set, or list the crate writes into in place is refused, which main translated by sharing: the lists fixture's hashlink-style read of a (u8, String) entry out of a node it then frees is one, as is the spares fixture's smallvec-style insert and remove over Strings, so both now hold Vec<u8>s.
Runtime: rs.placeIn. No config changes. No breaking change.
Census at the pin, against main at 2d402c546 (with #644 and #662), compared span by span: model 50 → 45, moq-net 335 → 328, kio 75 → 71. Exactly smallvec's Drain::next/next_back (lib.rs:383, 397) and retain (1733, 1740) spans go away, with moq-net's ietf/parameters.rs:14,40 duplicate message (they stay refused as byte reinterpretation). The branch adds one line, in model and moq-net: crossbeam-epoch-0.9.21/src/deferred.rs:52:32, the closure move-out refusal on ptr::read(raw.cast::<F>()) in Deferred::new's call, an expression main already refuses at 52:46 (the *mut u8 to *mut F cast), so no body that translates on main stops translating; see ## Waiting. Recorded in the ts-model README.
Decisions
Values a pointer read moves out (round-6 checkpoint, decided by the maintainer on 2026-11-07): ✅ copy on every read that moves a value out, at any depth, by extending copy.rs's struct copies to library objects (rejected: patch each case found, such as copying in rs.ptrRead and unwrapping MaybeUninit/ManuallyDrop, which leaves values inside an Option, tuple, or struct aliased; rejected: refuse ptr::read/copy of a library object through a pointer made here, which gives up smallvec's Drain over String and Vec). This replaces round 5's rs.ptrRead/WrittenIn run-time check.
How far the copy reaches (my call within that decision): ✅ gate it as copy.rs gates struct copies, on the crate writing into the type in place (Writes::into) or comparing pointers to it, plus interior mutability, which writes through a shared reference that Writes doesn't record (rejected: copying every library object on every move-out read, which costs O(length) where nothing could tell the copy apart).
Library objects a move-out read copies (round-3 checkpoint of the second review session, decided by the maintainer on 2026-11-07): ✅ keep the list, refuse the rest. An unsafe whole-value move (ptr::read, replace, swap, copy, copy_nonoverlapping) copies what it moves out for types whose layout the translator owns (the crate's own types and values JS copies) and for the library objects this PR copies and tests: cells, locks, one-time cells, ranges, collections (narrowed by the next decision), and Cell::from_mut's cell. Every other library object is refused at translation with a span, decided by the type rather than its type arguments; inline_held's type-arguments fallback became that refusal. Root cause: JS objects are references, and a whole-object write copies into the existing object to keep pointers valid, so a read must copy the inline state Rust's bitwise move would split, and only the wrapper's author knows that state. This applies m3's unsafe policy rule 3 (#649). Rejected: walking std's real fields and closure captures (std's private layout in the translator, and closures can't be copied); moving each copy into its runtime class as a declared method now (cleaner, but more change; the path if the list grows); patching each case.
A collection's storage (round-3 checkpoint of the second review session; decided by the coordinator under m3's unsafe policy rule 3 on 2026-11-07, while the maintainer was away): ✅ refuse an unsafe whole-value move (ptr::read, replace, swap, copy, and assume_init_read and ManuallyDrop::take, which are ptr::read) of a collection whose JS storage can't split as Rust's does: a Vec other than bytes, VecDeque, BinaryHeap, String, the maps and sets, and LinkedList. Only the exact ones stay copied: Vec<u8>, BytesMut, Weak, cells, locks, one-time cells, and ranges. The census at the pin shows no new refusal. Rejected: copying the storage and recording where it differs from Rust (wrong once the shared storage is written through a pointer taken before the read); sharing it again (wrong once the original's length changes while both live). Each is wrong in some valid unsafe code. This supersedes round 6's reason for rejecting a refusal (keeping smallvec's Drain over String), which predates the policy; the storage copy it needed is deleted.
A pointer made from a reference, with no visible origin, reaching its neighbour (same checkpoint; decided by the coordinator under the policy on 2026-11-07, while the maintainer was away): ✅ one rule in origin.rs. Every offset, count, or length from such a pointer (an array of one) must be fixed and proven to stay in bounds, or it is refused with a span. That covers round 3's constant wrapping_add read through, add(1) read through alike, and from_raw_parts (and a raw slice from one) with a length the body doesn't fix. A wrapping offset is traced like add, so the read through it is checked; a pointer one past stays valid, as main's elements fixture's at.add(1).sub(1).read() and at.add(1).offset_from(at) need, and only a read or write there is refused. Rejected: tracking where a reference points across calls (new pointer metadata, which the policy refuses); patching each case.
ptr::replace and ptr::swap of a collection (decided by the coordinator on 2026-11-07, while the maintainer was away): ✅ stay refused with the other unsafe whole-value moves of a collection whose JS storage can't split, as the collection decision above has it.
Fixtures that held Strings (decided by the coordinator on 2026-11-07, while the maintainer was away): ✅ pointers::lists' hashlink-style list and elements::spares' smallvec-style pointer moves hold Vec<u8> instead of String, since the String moves are now refused.
The ts-unsafe epic (decided by the coordinator on 2026-11-07, while the maintainer was away): ✅ stays deleted with its last child; what unsafe is left stays refused under m3's unsafe policy.
Pointers from a reference through a join (design checkpoint at review round 3 of the second session, decided by the maintainer on 2026-11-07): ✅ narrow the scope. The join walk (51149824b and the joined_reference half of 3281e7d38) is reverted; every other fix stays (the cast bounds check recast_reference, the { v: x }.v target fold, the uninitialized-cell copy, the fixture leak fixes, and the coordinator's decisions above). A pointer made from a reference that passes through a branch or loop fails loud at run time, as main's ptr::from_ref and &raw const of a local already do, which Throw only where Rust panics lists. Rejected: refusing offset_from broadly through joins (refuses valid code, such as copies of one pointer through different locals); continuing to patch loop-iteration and identity tracking (each round found the next gap); landing 51149824b as is.
The census line at crossbeam-epoch-0.9.21/src/deferred.rs:52:32 (decided by the maintainer on 2026-11-07): ✅ accept it. It is the closure move-out refusal from review round 1, a second message on an expression main already refuses one column later (52:46, a byte-reinterpreting cast), so nothing that translates on main stops translating, and every closure move-out stays fail-loud. Rejected: refusing closure move-outs only through pointers made from a reference (other pointers keep main's silent sharing); suppressing a move-out refusal whose pointer is already refused (tracking nothing else needs).
A Pin over a crate's own Deref type failing tsc (TS2739), suggested below: ✅ plan it as an m3 quest (decided by the maintainer on 2026-11-07).
Choices made without asking
A pointer from a reference the body doesn't show the origin of is a lone place. Within one body the rule above refuses every way out of it; through a pointer passed from elsewhere it fails at run time as any lone pointer does. Under Stacked Borrows that access is UB (the reference's tag covers only its pointee). Tree Borrows would allow it within the allocation, but no stock code at the pin does this. The run-time failure through a pointer from elsewhere is the existing AtIndex.reach gap that Throw only where Rust panics owns.
The &mut that is an rs.Place (a value JS copies) is also traced to where the body shows it borrowed. So &mut v[1] as *mut u32 is now an rs.AtIndex whose sub(1) stays in v, instead of a closure place that knows no array. No existing snapshot changed.
A Weak is on the list, with nothing inline. Its JS object holds only the Arc it points at, so a copy one object deep is Rust's bitwise read. Without it the decision refused smallvec's Drain and retain over Weak<Waker> in all three census targets (lib.rs:383, 1740), the spans this quest exists to translate. behind_refs now drains and retains Weak<u32>s, one written whole in place, against native.
A wrapper off the list still counts its type arguments as a reason to copy, so it is refused when anything it is over could change, as before. That only adds refusals: a Peekable<vec::IntoIter<Vec<u8>>> whose peeked Vec the crate writes into is otherwise neither !Freeze nor written into as a Peekable, and would be shared.
An unsafe move-out of a closure whose copy Rust can tell apart is refused (Translator::unsplit's stateful): one that writes its captures, or captures, at any depth, a value with interior mutability or one a copy copies (such as a Vec the crate writes into, which a FnOnce may move out), and any coroutine. JS keeps such state in the one function, and no copy of a closure's captures exists for a bitwise read (review round 1 and 2 of this session).
An opaque library object is refused only by an unsafe move-out (unsplit's opaque, which walks what copy_parts copies), and a copy shim copies one object deep where a safe move reaches it, as main does, so Cell::replace of an array of LazyCells through feat(ts)!: parts of arrays written where they are, without arrayView #662's elem_copy translates again (review round 4).
Alternatives
Address ids per live object (#596): rejected for this quest per the brief, since it builds on the place model.
Always { v: r }, with no tracing: simpler, but &v[0] as *const T followed by add would fail at run time, which is the most common shape of this construct.
Follow-ups
A Pin<P> of a crate's own Deref type, such as Pin::new(OwnPtr(Cell::new(0))) with old.get() through it, fails tsc (TS2739: OwnPtr is not a Cell<u32>, as Pin<P>'s deref is typed as P itself). Found while checking a review finding; untouched by this PR. Recommend: plan it as an m3 quest, since a translation that fails tsc is a translator bug, though no consumer at the moq pin reaches it.
Validation
just ci at 28c545033 (after merging main at fd62edf2c, which has #633): passes, lang::dyns and lang::panics included.
New pointers::moved_out case, for each route round 6 named: a Vec moved out through a pointer from a shared reborrow, through casts to *mut MaybeUninit<Vec<u8>> and *mut ManuallyDrop<Vec<u8>>, and swapped through such a cast; an Option<Vec<u8>>, a (Vec<u8>, u8), and a struct holding a Vec<u8>, moved out by ptr::read, copy_nonoverlapping, replace, and swap; each followed by an in-place write of the original Vec; and an Option<Cell<u32>> read out through a shared reference, whose cell is then set. Without the copy.rs change it gives 306 differences against native; with it, none.
Review rounds 1 and 2 (inline_moved, ends_moved in pointers::moved_out): a RefCell<Cell<u32>> and OnceCell<Cell<u32>>, a Range<Cell<u32>>, and a Cell from Cell::from_mut, moved out through shared references whose cells are then set: 143 differences against native before each fix, none after.
just ci and just ts census at d4531da15: pass, census unchanged (model 46, moq-net 348, kio 72).
behind_refs adds .into() of a reference to an Arc's value against ptr::from_ref (offset_from 0), a crate's own impl From<&Halves32> for NonNull<u32> pointing at a field, and an Rc drop count around retained; drained and retained now free their Vecs' buffers by set_len.
Round 5's finding (a ptr::replace through a pointer from &mut Vec<u8> returned the replacement) reproduced as 163 differences against native in the new replaced case (ptr::replace, ptr::read then ptr::write, ptr::copy_nonoverlapping then ptr::write, and ptr::swap), and none after the fix.
New pointers::behind_refs case: smallvec-style Drain and retain over u32, String, Vec<u8>, and Option<u16>; offset_from/add/sub through pointers from &v[i] and ptr::from_ref(&v[i]); a write through (&mut v[1] as *mut u32).sub(1); a &Vec read and a &mut Vec written whole through a pointer made each of the four ways; a &u32 read through a pointer made each of three ways; an &Option<Cell<u32>> read through &raw const and ptr::from_ref; offset_from between two ptr::from_ref(&*arc).
reject: past_reference and infallible_cell (a whole write through a shared reference to a tagless Result<Cell<u32>, Infallible>) are refused with spans.
just ts census at the pin, on this branch and on main, compared span by span (above).
Round 3's design, after merging main at 132d0ad0d: just ci at f275248c2 passes. reject adds lazy_moved (a LazyCell read out before its initializer, which captures a Cell, runs) and peeked_moved (a Peekable read out with a Cell peeked), each refused with a span. just ts census on this branch and on that main, compared span by span (above).
Session-2 review rounds 1 and 2: moved_out adds shrunk_moved (a Vec<u32> read out, then the original set_len(0); a VecDeque<u32> read out, then the original pop_fronted), map_rewritten (a HashMap::new() written through ptr::from_mut of a map made with_capacity), and cell_rewritten (Cell::new(n) written through ptr::from_ref(r).cast_mut() for a Cell::from_mut cell and a plain one). Each gave 143 differences against native before its fix and none after. reject adds unfixed_reference (add, wrapping_add, and copy_nonoverlapping from a reference by an unfixed offset or count), each refused with a span.
Merged main at db7b7bd6f, which brings #640: its buffered-byte arm stays ahead of this PR's general one in raw_pointer and raw_origin, as its Overlaps section says. just ci at 07fda2bed passes.
The coordinator's two decisions, after merging main at 5c9d40576: reject adds collection_moved (a Vec<u32> by ptr::read then set_len, a VecDeque<u32> by ptr::read then pop_front, a String by ptr::copy within a Vec as smallvec's retain moves it, a (String, u8) by assume_init_read, and a Vec<u32> by ManuallyDrop::take) and beside_reference (a constant wrapping_add(1) and an add(1) read through, and slice::from_raw_parts of an unfixed length, from ptr::from_ref(r)), each refused with a span. behind_refs and moved_out drop their String, Vec<u32>, and VecDeque<u32> move-outs, now those refusals. main's fixtures lose two cases it translated: pointers::lists' hashlink-style list holds Vec<u8> values instead of Strings, and elements::spares' pointer moves (smallvec-style insert, remove, and retain by ptr::copy and ptr::read) run over Vec<u8> instead of String, whose slots case stays. reject's existing reached_out and past_reference keep their spans. Review round 1 of the third session: behind_refs adds a one-past pointer stored whole by ptr::write through a pointer to it, and a pointer moved off a zero-sized value and borrowed; each was refused before its fix and matches native after. just ts census on this branch and on that main, compared span by span (above), before and after the one-past read check. Merged main at cfee013a3 (no ts/ change); quest check --fix and just ci at the merged head pass.
Merged main at ef4caed85, with #625's UnsafeCell accessors and #654's tokio channels, by hand: made_out_of_step takes the pointee place; the collection refusal moved from read to the unsafe arms, as feat(ts): translate UnsafeCell's raw accessors #625's safe Cell methods share read; changes and the copy shim see through Pin, which feat(ts): translate UnsafeCell's raw accessors #625's UnsafeCell::replace of a Pin<Box<_>> reached; and feat(ts): translate UnsafeCell's raw accessors #625's reject case cell_pointer_kept, whose *const UnsafeCell<u32> coerced from a reference this PR translates, loses that refusal, with vec_pointer kept as its helper. behind_refs adds that shape (a pointer coerced from &UnsafeCell<u32>, written through raw_get after a call), which matches native. Reject's refusals differ from that main's only by this PR's. just ts census on this branch and on that main, compared span by span (above).
Merged main at eec5aa94f (#656): place_read returns an owned Expr, so the { v: x }.v fold's fallback drops its .cloned(); snapshots regenerated. quest check --fix and just ci at a7203436e pass, and just ts census on this branch and on that main, compared span by span (above). Review round 3 of the third session: clean.
Merged main at 41ea81480 (#660): ts/README.md's pointer row keeps this PR's text with feat(ts): a slice of one byte's place #660's slice-of-one clause, and lang/conversions' snapshot is regenerated, where feat(ts): a slice of one byte's place #660's new lentParam cases pass this PR's copy$<Type> shims (each rs.objectCopy) to rs.cellReplace and its converted cases take the { v: x }.v fold. quest check --fix and just ci at a37bd0b6d pass, and just ts census on this branch and on that main, compared span by span (above). Review round 4 of the third session: clean.
Automated reviews on a7203436e (OpenAI and CodeRabbit), addressed in 0af963e81, 3281e7d38, and 51149824b: reject adds recast_reference (a read one past a reference through an as cast to *const MaybeUninit<u32>, cast_mut, and cast::<ManuallyDrop<u32>>, translated with no refusal before), each refused with spans; joined_reference and joined_twice, which 3281e7d38 and 51149824b added, went with the join tracking the maintainer's narrowing reverted. pointers::moved_out adds uninit_moved (a Box::<HeldCell>::new_uninit() whose UnsafeCell<RefCell<u32>> the shell holds as new rs.Cell(undefined), read out through a pointer): 162 differences (a TypeError) before the copy.rs fix, none after. It also frees what its whole writes replace. conversions' converted adds a one-use *Box::into_raw(Box::new(kept)) = 2 then reads kept: tsc failed (TS2364) before, and a fold to kept = 2 would have broken the read. Declined: CodeRabbit's README wording (the array-of-one clause sits inside the rs.Place clause, and ts/README.md's Not yet lists arithmetic on a value JS keeps as an object). ts-assoc-type-fields now counts smallvec's 5 model refusals. Review session 1 round 4 (a37bd0b6d): clean. Session 2 rounds 1 and 2 found the target fold's copy case and the join gaps, fixed. Round 3 is the checkpoint above.
The maintainer's narrowing (session-2 round-3 checkpoint): reverted the join walk in 3be3d337d, named the case in ts-runtime-throws and ts/README.md, and merged main at 2a0a7d4fc (#657, #644; ts-assoc-type-fields, which feat(ts): fields typed by an associated type #644 finished, stays deleted). origin.rs now differs from a37bd0b6d's, the last head a review found clean, only by the cast arms recast_reference needs. CodeRabbit's copy.rs findings: copy_parts unwraps a Pin as shim already did and passes the uninitialized flag through Reverse, AssertUnwindSafe, Wrapping, and Saturating (b26afb639). Neither reproduces through a body that translates: an uninitialized shell keeps a Wrapping as undefined, which the MaybeUninit guard returns (tried as a moved_out case, which matched native before the change), and the only Pin<P> that copies has P a crate's own Deref type, whose deref through the Pin fails tsc on main (TS2739). quest check --fix and just ci at 419105da0 pass, and just ts census on this branch and on that main, compared span by span (above).
Review session 3 (after the design change): round 1 found closure state shared by a move-out read; reproduced as no refusal for reject's new closure_moved counter, refused after 52a10e969. Round 2 found a FnOnce moving out a captured Vec; reproduced, refused after 56ee890df. Round 3 was clean. Merged main at 2d402c546 (#662, #665) by hand: both sides' roots and cases kept, conflicted snapshots regenerated. Round 4 found a safe Cell::replace of [[LazyCell<u32, fn() -> u32>]] refused; reproduced in pointers::array_parts, which matches native after aa033e2f1. Round 5 was clean at 942417529; merged main at b90529bbb (#655, quest files only, conflict-free). quest check --fix and just ci at 942417529 pass, and just ts census on this branch and on main at 2d402c546, compared span by span (above).

mechanical fix by codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort: Merged base and mechanically re·solved Rust origin-analysis and documentation conflicts, preserving both sides; ran just check base and just test base successfully. (head e4c0cdb)
Fixed: medium, ts/src/lower/copy.rs:485: [P2] Preserve safe array-cell moves of opaque library values; ts/src/lower/copy.rs:531 restores shallow copying for safe moves, while opaque checks at line 204 preserve unsafe refusals; six focused array_parts inputs now match native Rust.
A pointer made from a reference is where the body shows the reference
borrowed, and else a place of its own: of a shared reference's value, or
writing a whole value into the object a &mut is in place.

The compiler now traces reference-derived pointers, checks pointer bounds and fixed offsets or counts, and supports place-based writes for selected values. Copy analysis handles inline state for selected library objects and rejects some moves that cannot be represented. Rust and generated TypeScript fixtures add supported pointer and movement cases, alongside rejection cases and updated diagnostics. Documentation and refusal counts also change.
Merge Risk: Low · up to a1578
The pointer support is mergeable with bounded owner awareness: certain uninitialized-value copies and same-address pointer comparisons can throw, and some valid zero-count copies are rejected. These narrow cases warrant follow-up, alongside stronger initializer-timing coverage.

Explanation
The title "feat(ts): translate a raw pointer behind a reference" matches the main change: the PR makes the translator accept raw pointers formed from references (previously refused) and adds the runtime rs.placeIn support. It is specific and summarizes the primary change. It does not cover the copy-on-move-out work or the unsafe-policy documentation changes, which is expected for a title.

Explanation
The description is specific and tied to the changeset. It states that the quest file raw-behind-ref.md and the ts-unsafe epic are deleted, and it names the affected docs (ts-model, ts-assoc-type-fields, ts/README.md). It also explains the translator changes in rs.ts, origin.rs, rvalue.rs, copy.rs and the fixture updates, and reports the census and validation results. This matches the raw summary and the PR objectives.

No actionable findings in the reviewed lowering changes. The new raw_pointer/behind_reference path preserves known borrowed places, indexed elements and stable raw-pointer reborrows, and origin analysis follows the same cases. The fallback distinguishes shared immutable/tagged values from objects requiring in-place writes. In particular, checking the actual layout's Variants::Multiple avoids treating a tagless Result<Cell<_>, Infallible> as immutable; the unsupported whole-write case now has a span-bearing rejection. Factoring write_into retains the existing byte/array/private-state assignment paths.
The fixture source and generated output cover both-ended Drain-like reads, retain-like movement, indexed pointer arithmetic, all four mutable Vec conversion routes, shared scalar and Option reads, and Arc place identity. The new past_reference rejection also pins the lone-place arithmetic boundary.
Direction: retain the explicit limitation for references whose storage origin is not visible. This is support for the described place-model cases, not general pointer provenance or address arithmetic; the existing runtime-throws follow-up still matters for pointers arriving from elsewhere. Optional additional coverage would exercise a mutable library object with private runtime state through each conversion spelling, alongside the current Vec cases.
Limits: GitHub-only static review of the production diff, new source tests, relevant generated pointer snapshots and rejection expectations. I did not run quest context, compilation, differential tests, Miri, census or CI, and did not independently reproduce the reported refusal counts or local test pass. This COMMENT is not merge approval.
A raw pointer from a `&mut` to a library object writes a whole value into
that object in place, so `ptr::replace`, `ptr::read` before a write,
`ptr::copy`, and `ptr::swap` returned the object the write then changed.
Such a pointer is now an `rs.placeIn`, whose reads that move the value out
copy it, as `replaceIn` does for `mem::replace`.

Incremental review of 9bfcf27 against base d0c268d, following review 5809926387 at 43b8b2b.
The new WrittenIn/placeIn path addresses the direct mutable-Vec replacement case, and the added fixture covers replace, read/write, copy/write and swap. However, the two open cases already recorded in the PR remain supported by the current code:
[P2] Shared-pointer reads still alias a moved-out library value (ts/runtime/rs.ts, ptrRead; ts/src/lower/pointer.rs, read). ptrRead copies only a WrittenIn; a shared-reference pointer is { v: target }, and read/substitution can fold that directly to target. After ptr::read through a short-lived shared reference, overwriting the original slot via ptr::write from a later mutable reference changes the JS object returned as the old Vec as well. Rust permits moving those header bits out and then initializing the original slot with ptr::write without dropping the moved value. Copy-out semantics must not depend solely on which pointer wrapper performed the read.
[P2] Transparent pointees bypass the new copy-out helper (ts/src/lower/pointer.rs:1142). The ptrRead selection calls write_in on the wrapped type. Its erasure handles Pin/Box/AssertUnwindSafe, not MaybeUninit or ManuallyDrop, so reading a pointer cast to one of those wrappers can fall through to p.v even when p is WrittenIn. A subsequent in-place write then changes the supposedly moved-out old value. Normalize the transparent pointee for this selection and retain regression cases for both wrapper spellings.
Direction: settle the documented design checkpoint and cover the whole move-out class, including nested library values, rather than treating the direct Vec regression test as proof of all read/copy paths. These confirm the existing open findings, not two newly discovered independent issues.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static, base-aware comparison of the changed runtime/lowering, copy-selection helpers and fixture source. No compilation, differential tests, Miri, census or CI was run, and reported results were not independently reproduced. This COMMENT is not merge approval.
The retain case outputs only surviving values. A missing drop_in_place can therefore pass. Add a rejected Rc<Counted> and emit its drop counter immediately after retained returns. Regenerate the fixture snapshots.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The new fallback creates a singleton placeIn for an opaque mutable reference, but the supplied provenance analysis only follows std calls. If such a pointer escapes a helper, its caller may perform valid Rust array arithmetic without receiving either the original array provenance or a translation refusal.
Native Rust accesses the adjacent vector header, while generated code may attempt to leave the singleton place and throw a past-array error.
This can occur when: A non-inlined helper converts its &mut Vec<u8> parameter to a raw pointer and returns it. Its caller passes the first element of an array of vectors, then uses p.add(1) to read the second vector's length.

Design change: narrowed the scope, as the maintainer decided at the session-2 round-3 checkpoint on 2026-11-07.
Reverted the join tracking: 51149824b and the joined_reference half of 3281e7d38 (joined_origin, paths/possible, and reject's joined_reference and joined_twice). origin is again the one place a chain of single assignments shows.
Kept every other fix: the cast bounds check (recast_reference), the { v: x }.v assignment-target fold, the uninitialized-cell copy, the fixture leak fixes, and the coordinator's three recorded decisions.
A pointer made from a reference that passes through a branch or loop now fails loud at run time, as main's ptr::from_ref and &raw const of a local already do. Throw only where Rust panics and ts/README.md's pointer row now name this case.
Rejected: refusing offset_from broadly through joins (refuses valid code); continuing to patch loop-iteration and identity tracking (each round found the next gap); landing 51149824b as is.
…Rust tells apart
A pointer from a shared reference to a Freeze closure reads out the same JS
function, whose captured state the original and the copy then share. ptr::read
and the other unsafe moves now refuse a value holding, by value, a closure that
writes its captures or captures a value with interior mutability, or a
coroutine, with a span (reject's closure_moved).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…would split
A closure that moves out a captured Vec the crate writes into gives each copy
the same JS vector, so the stateful check also counts captures a copy copies
(reject's closure_moved).

…ads it out
Safe moves, such as Cell::replace of an array of LazyCells through elem_copy,
copy such an object one object deep again, as main did; unsplit refuses it in
the unsafe arms with the collection and closure refusals.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)
Incremental, base-aware review of head a15788d against base b90529b, following review 5815628374 at 5114982. Compared both head and base movement so the intervening array/slice, bindgen, and associated-type work is not treated as new work in this PR.
No new actionable findings in the reviewed changes. The previous pointer/slice-loop recursion path is addressed by removing the join walk: origin and start now stop at traced(), which requires a non-argument local with exactly one assignment, rather than re-entering joined_paths with a fresh cycle guard. The transparent-cast origin checks remain intact.
The scope decision is now explicit: branch/loop-carried pointers and origins the single-assignment walk cannot recover retain the documented runtime limitation. This is a narrowed analysis, not a general provenance fix; I am not repeating the acknowledged join cases as new findings.
The copy changes also distinguish unsafe move-out refusals from safe shallow copies. unsplit checks opaque inline state and stateful closures/coroutines at unsafe entry points, while the safe LazyCell-array replacement fixture and generated copy shim retain the safe path. The uninitialized flag now propagates through Pin and the transparent value wrappers. The closure_moved rejection expectations cover mutable captures, interior-mutability captures, and a moved-out captured Vec.
Direction: keep this narrower origin-analysis boundary explicit and retain a regression for the reported pointer/slice round-trip loop, even though the problematic traversal was removed. The PR's documented census decision about the extra crossbeam closure-refusal diagnostic still needs its stated maintainer resolution.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static comparison of incremental changes, current relevant lowering helpers, fixture source, generated snapshots, rejection expectations, and review discussion. No shell, compilation, differential tests, Miri, census, or CI was run; reported validation and the loop example were not independently executed. This COMMENT is not merge approval.

Check initializer timing during array replacement.
Both initializers return constants, so premature initialization can still produce the expected bytes. Record initializer calls before and after Cell::replace, and leave one cell unforced. This would detect eager initialization on the array-copy path.

A type JS can't write into in place is refused with a span.Every read that moves a value out copies it.
ptr::read,replace,swap, andptr::copy/copy_nonoverlapping, through any pointer, copy each object the moved-out value holds at any depth that a later write could change in place, as Rust's bitwise read gives a value of its own.copy.rs's struct copies (changes, shim, andWrites) now count a library object a whole write lands in (write_in): copied one object deep byrs.objectCopy, asreplaceIncopies formem::replace, with what it holds inline copied by its type too (aRefCell's,Mutex's, orOnceCell's value, a range's ends; aCellis rebuilt as a newrs.Cellof its value, sinceCell::from_mutmakes one of another's place), while aVec<u8>'s and aBytesMut's bytes, and what aWeakpoints at, stay shared as Rust shares them. A collection whose JS object keeps its length with its storage (a non-byteVec,VecDeque,String, map, set, or list) is refused with a span wherever such a move would copy it (Translator::unsplit, checked on the unsafeptr::read/replace/swap,ptr::copy,assume_init_read, andManuallyDrop::takearms), as no JS copy splits from the original as Rust's does; a safe move, such asmem::replace, anArc::make_mutmove, or #625'sCellandUnsafeCellmethods, which shareread, replace, andswap, leaves nothing pointing into the original and keeps the shallowrs.objectCopy. APinis what it holds, as in JS. A whole write into an object (ptrWrite) also drops a field the new value lacks, such as aHashMap's capacity, unless the destination is a place of another class. Any other library object, a runtime wrapper whose inline state only its class knows, such as aLazyCellor aPeekable, is refused with a span wherever an unsafe move-out would copy it (a safe move copies it one object deep, asmaindoes): where the crate writes into its type in place, compares pointers to it, it has interior mutability, or a type it is over could change. A map whose hasher could change counts as changing, so it is refused too. So is a closure whose copy Rust tells apart, and any coroutine. So aVec<u8>read out through a pointer from a shared reference, through a cast to*mut MaybeUninit<Vec<_>>orManuallyDrop<Vec<_>>, or inside anOption, tuple, or struct, keeps what it held after the original is written in place.origin.rssees the same pointers, so arithmetic the body shows leaving a place of its own is refused at translation rather than failing at run time (reject's newpast_reference). From an array of one, every offset, wrapping or not, copy or write count, and slice length must be one the body fixes and that stays within it, and every read or write through such a pointer (ptr::read/write/replace/swap,as_ref/as_mut, or a*pderef) must be at its element, not one past it, or it is refused (beside_reference,unfixed_reference). A pointer from a reference to anArc's value stays that value's one place, asarc_rawmakes it, byptr::from_ref,NonNull::from, or.into().From/Intotake these shortcuts only for std's reference-to-NonNullimpl (the reference's pointee is theNonNull's, which any other impl would overlap), so a crate's ownimpl From<&T> for NonNull<U>runs as written. A move-out copy of an uninitialized value treats what a cell or library object in it holds as uninitialized too, through aPin,ManuallyDrop, orWrapping-like wrapper. An assignment's member target folds only to the place anrs.placereads, as{ v: x }holds a copy ofx.Impact
ptr::from_mut,NonNull::from, and.into()of a&mutto a library object now give anrs.Placethat writes in place, as every other*mutto one is.copy$<Type>shim (rs.objectCopy), as does eachptr::copyof one. Recorded in the ts-model README.Decisions
Values a pointer read moves out (round-6 checkpoint, decided by the maintainer on 2026-11-07): ✅ copy on every read that moves a value out, at any depth, by extending
copy.rs's struct copies to library objects (rejected: patch each case found, such as copying inrs.ptrReadand unwrappingMaybeUninit/ManuallyDrop, which leaves values inside anOption, tuple, or struct aliased; rejected: refuseptr::read/copyof a library object through a pointer made here, which gives up smallvec'sDrainoverStringandVec). This replaces round 5'srs.ptrRead/WrittenInrun-time check. How far the copy reaches (my call within that decision): ✅ gate it as
copy.rsgates struct copies, on the crate writing into the type in place (Writes::into) or comparing pointers to it, plus interior mutability, which writes through a shared reference thatWritesdoesn't record (rejected: copying every library object on every move-out read, which costs O(length) where nothing could tell the copy apart).Library objects a move-out read copies (round-3 checkpoint of the second review session, decided by the maintainer on 2026-11-07): ✅ keep the list, refuse the rest. An unsafe whole-value move (
ptr::read,replace,swap,copy,copy_nonoverlapping) copies what it moves out for types whose layout the translator owns (the crate's own types and values JS copies) and for the library objects this PR copies and tests: cells, locks, one-time cells, ranges, collections (narrowed by the next decision), andCell::from_mut's cell. Every other library object is refused at translation with a span, decided by the type rather than its type arguments;inline_held's type-arguments fallback became that refusal. Root cause: JS objects are references, and a whole-object write copies into the existing object to keep pointers valid, so a read must copy the inline state Rust's bitwise move would split, and only the wrapper's author knows that state. This applies m3's unsafe policy rule 3 (#649). Rejected: walking std's real fields and closure captures (std's private layout in the translator, and closures can't be copied); moving each copy into its runtime class as a declared method now (cleaner, but more change; the path if the list grows); patching each case.A collection's storage (round-3 checkpoint of the second review session; decided by the coordinator under m3's unsafe policy rule 3 on 2026-11-07, while the maintainer was away): ✅ refuse an unsafe whole-value move (
ptr::read,replace,swap,copy, andassume_init_readandManuallyDrop::take, which areptr::read) of a collection whose JS storage can't split as Rust's does: aVecother than bytes,VecDeque,BinaryHeap,String, the maps and sets, andLinkedList. Only the exact ones stay copied:Vec<u8>,BytesMut,Weak, cells, locks, one-time cells, and ranges. The census at the pin shows no new refusal. Rejected: copying the storage and recording where it differs from Rust (wrong once the shared storage is written through a pointer taken before the read); sharing it again (wrong once the original's length changes while both live). Each is wrong in some valid unsafe code. This supersedes round 6's reason for rejecting a refusal (keeping smallvec'sDrainoverString), which predates the policy; the storage copy it needed is deleted.A pointer made from a reference, with no visible origin, reaching its neighbour (same checkpoint; decided by the coordinator under the policy on 2026-11-07, while the maintainer was away): ✅ one rule in
origin.rs. Every offset, count, or length from such a pointer (an array of one) must be fixed and proven to stay in bounds, or it is refused with a span. That covers round 3's constantwrapping_addread through,add(1)read through alike, andfrom_raw_parts(and a raw slice from one) with a length the body doesn't fix. A wrapping offset is traced likeadd, so the read through it is checked; a pointer one past stays valid, asmain'selementsfixture'sat.add(1).sub(1).read()andat.add(1).offset_from(at)need, and only a read or write there is refused. Rejected: tracking where a reference points across calls (new pointer metadata, which the policy refuses); patching each case.ptr::replaceandptr::swapof a collection (decided by the coordinator on 2026-11-07, while the maintainer was away): ✅ stay refused with the other unsafe whole-value moves of a collection whose JS storage can't split, as the collection decision above has it.Fixtures that held
Strings (decided by the coordinator on 2026-11-07, while the maintainer was away): ✅pointers::lists' hashlink-style list andelements::spares' smallvec-style pointer moves holdVec<u8>instead ofString, since theStringmoves are now refused. The ts-unsafe epic (decided by the coordinator on 2026-11-07, while the maintainer was away): ✅ stays deleted with its last child; what
unsafeis left stays refused under m3's unsafe policy.Pointers from a reference through a join (design checkpoint at review round 3 of the second session, decided by the maintainer on 2026-11-07): ✅ narrow the scope. The join walk (
51149824band thejoined_referencehalf of3281e7d38) is reverted; every other fix stays (the cast bounds checkrecast_reference, the{ v: x }.vtarget fold, the uninitialized-cell copy, the fixture leak fixes, and the coordinator's decisions above). A pointer made from a reference that passes through a branch or loop fails loud at run time, asmain'sptr::from_refand&raw constof a local already do, which Throw only where Rust panics lists. Rejected: refusingoffset_frombroadly through joins (refuses valid code, such as copies of one pointer through different locals); continuing to patch loop-iteration and identity tracking (each round found the next gap); landing51149824bas is.The census line at
crossbeam-epoch-0.9.21/src/deferred.rs:52:32(decided by the maintainer on 2026-11-07): ✅ accept it. It is the closure move-out refusal from review round 1, a second message on an expressionmainalready refuses one column later (52:46, a byte-reinterpreting cast), so nothing that translates onmainstops translating, and every closure move-out stays fail-loud. Rejected: refusing closure move-outs only through pointers made from a reference (other pointers keepmain's silent sharing); suppressing a move-out refusal whose pointer is already refused (tracking nothing else needs).A
Pinover a crate's ownDereftype failingtsc(TS2739), suggested below: ✅ plan it as an m3 quest (decided by the maintainer on 2026-11-07).Choices made without asking
The run-time failure through a pointer from elsewhere is the existing
AtIndex.reachgap that Throw only where Rust panics owns. The
&mutthat is anrs.Place(a value JS copies) is also traced to where the body shows it borrowed. So&mut v[1] as *mut u32is now anrs.AtIndexwhosesub(1)stays inv, instead of a closure place that knows no array. No existing snapshot changed.A
Weakis on the list, with nothing inline. Its JS object holds only theArcit points at, so a copy one object deep is Rust's bitwise read. Without it the decision refused smallvec'sDrainandretainoverWeak<Waker>in all three census targets (lib.rs:383,1740), the spans this quest exists to translate.behind_refsnow drains and retainsWeak<u32>s, one written whole in place, against native.A wrapper off the list still counts its type arguments as a reason to copy, so it is refused when anything it is over could change, as before. That only adds refusals: a
Peekable<vec::IntoIter<Vec<u8>>>whose peekedVecthe crate writes into is otherwise neither!Freezenor written into as aPeekable, and would be shared. An unsafe move-out of a closure whose copy Rust can tell apart is refused (
Translator::unsplit'sstateful): one that writes its captures, or captures, at any depth, a value with interior mutability or one a copy copies (such as aVecthe crate writes into, which aFnOncemay move out), and any coroutine. JS keeps such state in the one function, and no copy of a closure's captures exists for a bitwise read (review round 1 and 2 of this session). An opaque library object is refused only by an unsafe move-out (
unsplit'sopaque, which walks whatcopy_partscopies), and a copy shim copies one object deep where a safe move reaches it, asmaindoes, soCell::replaceof an array ofLazyCells through feat(ts)!: parts of arrays written where they are, without arrayView #662'selem_copytranslates again (review round 4).Alternatives
{ v: r }, with no tracing: simpler, but&v[0] as *const Tfollowed byaddwould fail at run time, which is the most common shape of this construct.Follow-ups
Pin<P>of a crate's ownDereftype, such asPin::new(OwnPtr(Cell::new(0)))withold.get()through it, failstsc(TS2739:OwnPtris not aCell<u32>, asPin<P>'s deref is typed asPitself). Found while checking a review finding; untouched by this PR. Recommend: plan it as an m3 quest, since a translation that failstscis a translator bug, though no consumer at the moq pin reaches it.Validation
