Problem

Sources and items took one filter, opacity. A studio needs color correction, LUTs, blur, drop shadows, crop, masks, chroma and luma keys, and blend modes, and every composition host has to draw them the same way, since filters travel in the layout rather than in a source's track (decided 2026-11-02).

Approach

  • Model (moq-scene): Filter gains the CSS filter functions (brightness, contrast, saturate, grayscale, sepia, invert, hue_rotate, blur, drop_shadow) with the Filter Effects spec's matrices and meanings, in gamma-encoded sRGB with lengths in canvas pixels, plus chroma_key, luma_key, lut, and mask, each defined by its formula. Item gains crop and blend (CSS mix-blend-mode, the Compositing spec's 15 modes), and [video.<name>] gains crop. A new lut source kind reads a 3D .cube file; a lut filter names it, and a mask filter names any source with a picture of its own.
  • Rendering (effect.rs, effect.wgsl): every draw runs one shader with up to 8 per-pixel filters, so an item with only color, key, LUT, or mask filters is still one draw. A blur or drop shadow first draws the picture up to it into a raster. Rasters cover only what can still reach the canvas and never more than twice the canvas each way, and a wide blur halves its raster until it is at most 4 texels wide, so memory and taps are bounded by the canvas, not by the filter's settings. A blend mode copies the region under the item aside and mixes with it. Items filter once per render, however many targets show them.
  • Edits: removing a source removes the filters that name it; copying items brings the sources their filters read, and a paste that renames one renames it in the filters.
  • Studio: the Filters panel edits the crop, every filter, and an item's blend mode, with an Add filter menu; the Sources panel adds a LUT.

Layout-portable vs baked

Per the maintainer's 2026-11-02 split, everything in this PR is layout-portable: each effect is a pure function of the picture written in WGSL that moq-scene runs in every host, so the layout carries its name and settings. A mask names another source's track. A LUT's table has no track yet, so quest/m0/compose/layout.md now records that a viewer needs one carrying it, as an image's file is. Only an effect that cannot render the same way everywhere is baked into its source's track: ML effects such as background removal, which this PR leaves to the rewritten quest/m0/effects.md.

Measured GPU cost

Apple M4 (Metal), release build, preview and program at 1080p over a full-frame image, with a second full-frame image item filtered; 300 pipelined renders, best of 3:

Filter on the second item ms per render
none 0.33
opacity 0.49
5 color filters 1.28
chroma_key 0.57
lut (33³) 1.42
blur 4 px 3.30
blur 20 px 0.70
blur 100 px 0.81
drop_shadow 8 px 1.84
blend = "soft_light" 0.81

A narrow blur costs the most, since it runs at full resolution; wider ones halve first and get cheaper. Everything fits well inside a 33 ms frame.

Impact

  • Scene file: new filter kinds, crop on items and [video.<name>], blend on items, and the lut source kind. All additive; existing files load unchanged.
  • Filters panel: crop, blend mode, every filter's settings, and an Add filter menu.
  • Sources panel: add a LUT from a .cube file; a file that fails to parse shows why.
  • Removing a source now also removes the filters that name it.
  • A scene file that places a lut source as an item, or names an image or lut source with an empty path, is refused on load (an empty image path used to load and then fail to open).
  • README documents the crop, filters, and blend modes.

Choices made without asking

  • Crop and blend are fields, not filters. The quest plan said effects extend Filter, but a crop is CSS object-view-box and a blend is mix-blend-mode, neither a filter function: a crop must apply before the filters to keep the picture's resolution, and a blend mode has no place in an ordered chain. They still undo, and copy with the item.
  • Crop in fractions, not pixels, so a viewer picking another rendition keeps the framing.
  • LUTs are a source kind a filter names, rather than a path on the filter: the layout names sources and tracks, never files, and the table loads off the render thread with a status like an image.
  • Drop-shadow blur is the standard deviation, as the Filter Effects spec says, though browsers halve it as for box-shadow. moq-scene draws it in every host, so the spec's meaning holds.
  • Blur fades into transparency at the edges (CSS's edge mode none for filter), so a full-frame blurred camera darkens at its edges unless scaled past the canvas.
  • 1D .cube LUTs are refused rather than misread as 3D.
  • An item whose mask or LUT has nothing yet draws nothing, like a source with no picture, rather than drawing unfiltered for a moment.

Alternatives

  • One pass per filter: simpler, but costs a full-frame pass per filter where the fused shader costs one.
  • Paths on lut and mask filters: no new source kind, but a second resource-loading path beside sources, and files in the layout.

Decided

  • ML effects (maintainer, 2026-11-03, on this PR): land this PR now. quest/m0/effects.md stays an ML-only quest that picks the runtime (ort, tract, or burn) and the model (such as MediaPipe selfie segmentation) after measuring at 1080p30, and baked into the source's track.

Follow-ups

  • The layout quest carries a LUT's table to viewers (recorded in quest/m0/compose/layout.md).
  • Background removal and other ML effects: quest/m0/effects.md.
  • Premultiply source pictures before bilinear sampling, so a scaled transparent PNG does not fringe. This predates the PR; CodeRabbit raised it on effect.wgsl.

Checks

On macOS (Apple M4), at 80b08c4 (merged with main through #15): the full just ci, including clippy and nextest with moq-studio/capture (92 passed), and the GPU tests just render-sw runs, on Metal instead of lavapipe (17 compositor tests and the_program_reaches_a_relay).

Review

Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort) through quest review --base origin/main, round 2, on head 80b08c480761460a9791043e5313b9a1370ae07e: no findings (round 1 on d39d194 also had none).

CodeRabbit, on 210b67d: fixed the crop and luma_key README limits, a placed LUT, and an empty image or LUT path; refuted the straight-alpha sampling finding on effect.wgsl as pre-existing (the compositor sampled straight sources before premultiplying on main before this PR, and every raster this PR adds is premultiplied), now a follow-up.

Walkthrough

The scene model now supports fractional crops, expanded filters, blend modes, and LUT sources. A GPU effect pipeline prepares and renders these operations, and the compositor uses it for scene items. The studio Filters panel edits crops, filters, and blend modes, and the source form can add LUT files. Clip operations now include filter-referenced sources and update filter references when sources are renamed or removed. Documentation and effect plans were updated to describe the new scene behavior and ML video effects.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 210b6

The change is mergeable with bounded follow-up: reject blank LUT paths and ineffective LUT placements, and clarify the crop and luma-key limits. These issues can produce failed sources or confusing scene configurations, but no broad rendering or availability failure is established.

No actionable bugs found in the reviewed changes. The shared shader-based effect pipeline and bounded intermediate rasters are a reasonable direction, with the extra passes justified by ordered spatial effects. Static review only; I did not independently run the GPU, capture, or compositor tests.

Nitpick Cover Hue, Saturation, and Color in the blend-mode test.

1166-1171: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Cover Hue, Saturation, and Color in the blend-mode test.

blend_modes_mix_with_what_is_under checks Multiply, Screen, Difference, Luminosity, and a half-alpha Multiply. It does not check Hue, Saturation, or Color, which users can select in the Studio UI. A regression in any of those three branches would not fail the test.

Every case uses a red backdrop and a blue source. With that pair, Hue and Color both produce about (54, 54, 255), and Saturation returns the backdrop, (255, 0, 0). A change that makes Hue behave like Color, or that makes Saturation return the backdrop, would still pass.

Add a case set that uses a backdrop and source pair where the three modes give different results. Compute each expected pixel from the CSS compositing and blending formulas.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: 80b08c4.

[P2] Keep existing scenes with empty image paths loadable (rs/moq-scene/src/collection.rs:175–178). The new validation refuses an empty path for both LUTs and images. Unlike LUTs, image sources already existed on main, and the earlier Add form could save one with an empty path. Such an existing scene now fails collection validation and cannot be opened, despite the additive-compatibility promise. Reject an empty path when creating or editing an image, or provide a migration/compatible load path for existing scenes, and test loading a pre-change scene with an empty image path.

The new LUT placement and empty-LUT checks address the earlier review comments, and the README now records the crop and luma-key limits. Static GitHub-only review; I did not run the tests or open a scene interactively.

Re the OpenAI P2 on 80b08c4 (keep scenes with an empty image path loadable): refuted. An image source with an empty path was already broken before this PR. It loaded and then failed to open, so the scene never showed it. AGENTS.md (Required) says "Fail loud and early. Error on unsupported or malformed input rather than warn and continue", and refusing it at load does exactly that, with the reason shown. MoQ Studio hasn't shipped a release, so there are no saved scene files to keep compatible.

Fits guests to video effects (#17). A mask now reads another source's
picture, so Remove from scenes, now Room::take_off with a test, also
strips the masks reading a guest from items and sources, and
History::apply_outside refuses video entries whose filters name another
source, which an edit could remove. Guest sources are broadcasts, which
#17's validation accepts as before. The README's panel table takes #17's
Filters row beside Guests.

Brings in effects (#17), preview dragging (#15), failover (#19), guests
(#10), the docs move (#26), and outside edits (#24).

- Compositor: main's effect pipeline replaces this branch's shader. A
picture now carries whether its alpha is premultiplied, so a page
drawn as an item, or read by a luminance mask, is unpremultiplied
  before its filters run.
- Preview: with Interact on, the pointer goes to the pages and the
preview does not arrange items; off, dragging arranges as on main.
- Sources: the add form lists both Browser and LUT.
- README: both sides' panels, kinds, and sections.

Since main's crops (#17), an item shows only the part of its page its
source's and its own crop leave, stretched over the item, but the
preview still mapped the pointer over the whole page, so a click on a
cropped page landed off what it showed. Hit tests and captured drags
now map through the same combined crop the compositor draws with,
which `Collection::crop` now gives both.
