feat(scene): browser sources paint on the GPU under Wayland - #59
Browser sources copied on the GPU opened CEF's default X11 Ozone platform. Under a Wayland session that meant XWayland, where on NVIDIA CEF's GPU process finds no GBM device and pages never paint. In the dev shell on NixOS the GPU path never started at all: libcef.so could not find libEGL.so.1, so pages fell back to painting in memory.
Approach
Helper::new picks where pages paint once, at setup (browser::raster):
a device that cannot import DMA-BUFs, or a software one: the CPU path, as before;
$WAYLAND_DISPLAY set: the GPU path on --ozone-platform=wayland;
else $DISPLAY set: the GPU path on --ozone-platform=x11;
The helper protocol's Raster::Gpu carries the chosen Display. --render-node-override still pins the studio's GPU; Chromium 156's Wayland platform honours it over the compositor's main device (WaylandConnection::SetRenderNodePath).
Copy and Cut on the Wayland GPU path go through the feat(scene): browser sources on the CPU path need no X display #55 relay (Helper::copied()), as on the CPU path. CEF's own copy never reaches the desktop under Wayland Ozone: Chromium 156's WaylandClipboard::Write sets a selection only with the serial of an input event (wayland_clipboard.cc, "No serial found for selection."), which an offscreen page never gets. Measured on GNOME: after a native frame.copy(), the clipboard (read through XWayland with xclip) did not hold the copied text. The X11 GPU path keeps CEF's native copy, so page copy handlers still apply there.
flake.nix: libGL moves from runtimeDependencies, which autoPatchelf adds only to executables, to appendRunpaths, so libcef.so finds libEGL. udev was already on its runpath, and CEF bundles its own Vulkan loader, so those two entries go.
Impact
Under Wayland, browser sources paint on the GPU with no XWayland. A session with both variables set (GNOME, KDE) now uses Wayland instead of XWayland.
With neither variable set, pages take the CPU path instead of failing to open a display.
Copy and Cut under Interact now reach the desktop clipboard on the Wayland GPU path. Before this PR that path did not exist, and XWayland's never painted on NVIDIA. As on the CPU path, the copy is plain text that a page's copy handler cannot rewrite; the X11 GPU path is unchanged. README says which path does which.
The Sources panel's CPU tooltip names "no display" as a cause.
Public API: none. Helper::copied() now also returns copies from the Wayland GPU path. The helper protocol (same binary on both ends) gains Display in Raster::Gpu. No wire impact.
Choices made without asking
Wayland wins when both variables are set, per the quest's recommendation.
The quest is rewritten, not finished. Mesa did not paint in the only trial possible (below). The quest now covers the Mesa check, plus making a page whose GPU path cannot paint fail loudly. Today such a page stays Starting with no error, the same as XWayland on NVIDIA before this PR.
Alternatives
Wayland only when $DISPLAY is unset: rejected. GNOME and KDE set both, and XWayland is the case that never paints on NVIDIA.
Probe the Wayland socket at setup: not done. Chromium connects to $WAYLAND_DISPLAY itself, and a dead socket already fails every page loudly (see Validation).
Keep vulkan-loader on libcef's runpath: dropped. Nothing showed it was needed, since CEF loads its bundled loader by path.
Relay Copy on every path, X11 included: tried first, then reverted after review round 7 (below). X11 has a working platform clipboard, and native copy keeps page copy handlers there.
Validation
Browser suite (binary(browser), 9 tests), with a temporary print of each page's Paint (not committed):

Popups (a_dropdown_draws_and_takes_clicks), input, WebGL, crash handling, cookies, and the copy relay all pass on the NVIDIA Wayland GPU path.
nixos2 had no logged-in desktop session, only GDM's greeter, so Mesa ran under a headless sway. The Intel failure persists with glvnd pinned to Mesa and with --disable-gpu-sandbox. Release CEF strips the failing allocation's log. Details are in the rewritten quest.
Before the flake fix, nixos's GPU process logged "Could not dlopen native EGL: libEGL.so.1" and pages painted Paint::Cpu.
The nixos runs set VK_DRIVER_FILES to the host's ICD. This is unrelated to this PR: CEF's build copies its bundled libvulkan.so.1 into target/debug, nextest puts that directory first on LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and that loader cannot find NixOS's ICDs. just render-sw already sets VK_DRIVER_FILES.
ssh ubuntu was unreachable.
just ci on macOS: passes at both heads (236 tests).
On nixos (Linux): at 2af4f61, cargo fmt --check, both just check clippy runs, and just test's nextest (246 tests) pass, and just render-sw passes (35 + 5 + 9). At d54750d (native copy on X11), clippy with every feature passes, and the browser suite passes 9/9 with both variables set and 9/9 with neither.
A dead $WAYLAND_DISPLAY fails every page with "CEF failed to initialize", and Chromium logs "Failed to connect to Wayland display".
Follow-ups
The rewritten quest/m0/cef-headless.md: the GPU path on Mesa, and a loud failure when the GPU path cannot paint. It waits on a maintainer logging into a Mesa desktop session.
Worth a quest: on NixOS, cargo nextest and cargo run load CEF's bundled Vulkan loader from target/debug, which finds no ICDs, so the studio and its GPU tests get no adapter outside just render-sw.
Worth a quest: the X11 GPU path on NVIDIA under XWayland never paints ("gbm device is missing"). This PR routes Wayland sessions around it, but X11-only sessions still hit it.
Review
Reviewer: Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort.
Pick the display the GPU path paints through at setup: Wayland Ozone when
WAYLAND_DISPLAY is set, X11 when only DISPLAY is, and the CPU path with
neither. CEF's own copy reaches no desktop under Wayland Ozone, so Copy and
Cut always relay through the studio. libcef.so gets libEGL on its runpath,
without which its GPU process never started in the dev shell.

Browser sources on the GPU without an X display
feat(scene): browser sources paint on the GPU under Wayland
Nov 5, 2026
Through an X display CEF's clipboard is the desktop's, so the page's copy
handlers still decide what lands there; only Wayland and the CPU path relay.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
No actionable correctness finding identified in the source review. Direction looks sound: select the CEF platform once in Helper::new, carry that choice through the helper protocol, retain native X11 copy/cut, and reuse the existing relay for Wayland. The no-display CPU path also avoids attempting unsupported headless shared-texture allocation.
Verification limits: GitHub-only review of the diff, surrounding browser implementation, existing browser tests, Nix configuration, and recent browser history. I did not run quest context, builds, tests, or GPU/display validation. Check is still running for this head. The existing clipboard test exercises the relay, not native X11 clipboard behavior; the PR adds no automated platform-selection matrix. Mesa rendering and the documented never-first-paints failure remain unresolved follow-ups, so this is not validation of general Mesa support.
On Linux, browser raster selection now depends on CEF availability, adapter type, DMA-BUF support, and a configured display. GPU raster configuration carries the selected display and optional render node into startup. The host sets the corresponding Ozone platform and uses native clipboard handlers only for GPU pages on X11. Documentation and the CEF runtime library path were also updated.

No concrete merge-blocking issue is established. The reported Mesa rendering limitation remains documented, but the supplied evidence does not establish it as a regression.

The title "feat(scene): browser sources paint on the GPU under Wayland" matches the main change: browser sources now choose a GPU paint path under Wayland (with Ozone Wayland selection, Display enum in the helper protocol, and the flake runpath fix). It is specific and concise, and it omits secondary items such as the X11 clipboard split, the Sources panel tooltip, and the flake change, which is acceptable.
