Finishes quest/m0/scenes/published.md, part of the Composable scenes epic.

Problem

A portrait stream needed a further canvas: a second layout of every scene, its own top layer, and a canvas picker in Preview, Program, and Items. The epic (decided 2026-11-05) replaces that with one concept: any scene can be published as its own broadcast at its own size, and a portrait broadcast is a published portrait scene drawing the program through a program source.

Approach

Scene file (breaking, no migration): [canvases.<name>] and a scene's canvases.<name> are gone. A [[scenes]] entry takes an optional size = { width, height } (the program's without one), published = true, and recorded = true (one scene at most).

moq-scene

  • Scene::canvas, Collection::canvas(Some(scene)), and Collection::takes(scene), which refuses a scene of another size than the program or one drawing the program. Layer loses its canvas; Draft::set_recorded replaces set_extra/remove_extra.
  • The compositor keeps one switcher. The preview is drawn at the preview scene's size, with the top layer only when that is the program's size, and not at all while no tab shows it (set_previewing). set_outputs names the scenes drawn beside it, each at its own size into its own texture, from the same upload of each source; an output named but not drawn costs nothing beyond its keyframe clock. A scene source draws its scene at that scene's size.
  • fit replaces set_canvases: it checks every scene's size fits the GPU and sizes the effects to the largest. render refuses a scene grown since the last fit rather than overrunning what it sized.

moq-studio

  • Each published scene gets a Line at <--broadcast>/<scene>, with full and half sizes sharing the connection's bandwidth grant, its catalog listing the program's audio by reference. This is the further-canvas machinery keyed by scene name.
  • The program clock names each published scene as an output drawn only while one of its encoders would take the frame (Gate::wanted, false while its grant disables it): always while live and not --on-demand, otherwise while watched. A rendition handed no picture idles.
  • A published or recorded scene being drawn encodes the source tracks it shows, but only program restarts a restart media file: a scene beside program starting to draw would otherwise start the file's sound over in the program mix.
  • Recording has its own Line (from feat(studio)!: unlink canvases, record and grade each canvas, and preview only what is seen #54): it encodes the program or the recorded scene, and a size change opens a new track, so the recording goes on in a new file. The main line no longer carries a Record rung.
  • Health grades each broadcast with its own viewers and relay counts (ported from feat(studio)!: unlink canvases, record and grade each canvas, and preview only what is seen #54's diff, renamed for scenes). The panel shows the program, each published scene, then source tracks, and a problem on a published scene reads "On scene x, ...". A stalled or ended source names the program and each scene showing it, and a scene published again counts its encoder's frames afresh.
  • UI: Scenes panel rows get a Publish checkbox and show a scene's own size. The Output panel gets Scene sizes, a Picture picker for recordings, the recording encoder's own renditions, and each published scene's encoders. The canvas picker is gone.
  • The virtual camera (moq-dev/studio#9) shows the program, which this PR keeps. A camera per published scene is left to quest/m0/vcam/linux.md, which this PR rewrites now that it waits on nothing.
  • README: Published scenes replaces Canvases, plus updates to the panels table, scene file, Output, the encoder sessions table, Recording, and Health.

Audio: a published scene carries the program's mix, and recordings keep the recorded mix. The audio-scene picker each output gets is left to quest/m0/scenes/audio.md, as agreed for this quest.

Impact

  • Breaking: a scene file with [canvases] no longer loads, and history entries editing a canvas no longer parse. Nothing is released.
  • A published scene costs one more encode session, and two while its half size is watched. A scene nobody reads, and a hidden preview, cost no drawing.
  • Frame time on an Apple M4 (compositor::bench::sources_against_published_scenes, 1080p program plus 1080x1920 published scenes) grows only with what each published scene draws. With 64 sources: 3.94 ms with no published scenes, 4.02 ms with one sparse scene (2 items) and 4.24 ms with three, against 5.74 ms and 9.33 ms when each published scene places all 64.
  • An edit that resizes the scene on air is refused. Resizing the program canvas is refused too while the scene on air has an explicit size of its own.

Alternatives

  • Top layer over published scenes of every size. Rejected: its items are placed in program pixels, so a portrait scene places its own overlays.
  • Scene sizes in the Scenes panel rows. Rejected: it crowds every row. Sizes live in the Output panel next to the canvas form.
  • Refusing to remove or unpublish a published scene, as for the scene on air. Rejected: a published scene going away only ends its broadcast. Nothing else goes black.

Decisions

Maintainer, 2026-11-07 (comment): when a scene already drawn for a recording gets published, do its animations start over?

  • ✅ Keep shared timing: one drawn picture per scene, so animations start from whichever came first of publishing, picking the scene for recording, or studio start. No restart, and no extra GPU cost.
  • Draw twice, so the broadcast restarts its animations without jumping the recording.

Choices made without asking

  • size, published, and recorded are per-scene keys. A top-level recording = was rejected in feat(studio)!: unlink canvases, record and grade each canvas, and preview only what is seen #54 in favor of a flag, at most one.
  • The Items panel refuses to edit the top layer while the preview shows a scene of another size, since the preview does not draw it there.
  • Renaming a published scene ends its broadcast and starts one at the new path. A scene named viewers does not publish while live, as with canvases.
  • A published scene's name must parse as one moq_net::Path segment: no /, and a \ only before another.

Review

Codex gpt-6.1-sol (medium), quest review --base origin/main, round 5 on head 8bb3953: no findings.

  • Round 5 (8bb3953, merging origin/main with moq-dev/studio#9, moq-dev/studio#73, and moq-dev/studio#74): no findings. The merge was resolved by hand: the virtual camera takes each program frame beside the published scenes' drawing in run_program, its docs say "the program" rather than "the main canvas", the README's Output row lists both, and quest/m0/vcam/linux.md is rewritten since its only blocker was this quest.
  • Round 4 (0a1883a): no findings. It is the fourth round, so I reconsidered the approach: the review rounds and CodeRabbit's findings exposed edge cases but nothing structural. Recommend merging as is.
  • Round 3 (a7a6469, merging origin/main with moq-dev/studio#69's moq pin bump plus fixes for CodeRabbit's threads): no findings.
  • Round 2 (8958a8c): no findings.
  • Round 1 (151a668): ui.rs Items panel sized Fill and Add from the preview texture's last drawn size, which a hidden preview leaves stale. Fixed in 8958a8c: it now reads the layer's size from the collection.

CodeRabbit (review): 10 threads fixed in a7a6469 and resolved, each with a reply. One declined with a reply, since settled by the maintainer (see Decisions): restarting a published scene's clock on publication. Nitpicks are addressed in this comment. The undrawn-output overlay restart was reproduced first: an_overlay_restarts_going_on fails without the fix.

Merges: origin/main merged twice (no rebase). The first adapted the published-scene broadcast and the health tests to origin::Route (route(..., RouteOptions::hidden()), announce(), instance(), withdraw()). The second is round 5's; quest check --fix dropped quest/m0/vcam/linux.md's link to this quest, and the vcam epic's prose link was reworded by hand.

Checks on 8bb3953 (Apple M4): just ci (lints, quest check, 265 tests) passed, and the GPU tests (cargo nextest run --workspace --run-ignored only -- --skip bench, 53 tests on Metal) passed. The Linux-only virtual camera tests (just render-sw, just v4l2loopback) did not run here; the merge changes only doc comments in vcam.

Follow-ups

  • The epic's own end-to-end test: program plus a portrait scene drawing it, each viewer seeing the same cut at the same moment. It fits best after audio scenes land, so each output carries its picked audio scene.
  • A scene inspector could hold size and publish settings together once audio scenes add a per-output audio pick.

Every scene has a size, the program's by default, and any scene can be
published as its own broadcast at <--broadcast>/<scene>, at its own size,
with full and half renditions sharing the bandwidth grant. Further canvases,
their per-scene layouts, and the canvas picker are gone; a portrait stream is
a published portrait scene drawing the program through a program source.

The program keeps one switcher, offering only scenes of its size. The preview
follows the preview scene's size and is not drawn while no tab shows it. A
published or recorded scene is drawn only while one of its encoders takes the
frame. Recording has its own encoder line, recording the program or one
scene. Health grades each published broadcast with its own viewers.

Audio stays as today: published scenes carry the program's mix, and the
audio-scene picker is left to quest/m0/scenes/audio.md.

BREAKING CHANGE: `[canvases]` and a scene's `canvases.<name>` are removed
from the scene file, with no migration.

A hidden preview is not drawn, so its texture keeps the last scene's size.
The Items panel now reads the edited layer's size from the collection.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed 8958a8c against c929c40. No actionable introduced defects found.

The move from extra canvases to scene-sized outputs is consistent across collection/edit validation, compositor demand and nesting, independent recording, per-broadcast health, and UI controls. The hidden-preview Items sizing fix reads the collection rather than a stale texture. Direction looks sound within the documented breaking-schema and shared-program-audio scope.

Verification: GitHub-only static inspection of the changes, full implementations, and relevant callers/base behavior. I did not run tests or independently verify GPU performance, live relay behavior, or synchronized multi-output cuts. The deferred end-to-end cut/audio coverage remains a useful follow-up.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The change replaces named extra canvases with scenes that can use their own sizes. The compositor renders requested scene outputs, and the studio can publish scenes as separate broadcasts or select a scene for recording. The engine manages those outputs and their encoder lines. Health reports now separate program and scene broadcasts, including their viewers and tracks. The UI adds scene sizing, publication, and recording controls, and updates preview interaction for scene-specific sizes.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 0a188

Published scenes now broadcast at their own size, and the main correctness issues raised in review appear addressed. Some remaining minor issues are mainly a brief preview mis-scaling after a scene resize or undo, and a published scene's animation starting from its earlier clock. The remaining items are small and should not block merging.

Test explicit selection of the program.

The test returns to the program only by removing the recorded scene. It would not detect a no-op in set_recorded(None), which the UI uses to select the program. Test that selection and its undo and redo.

Extend the test around `set_recorded` to explicitly select the program by
calling `set_recorded(None)` and committing the draft. Assert that no scene is
recorded, then verify undo restores `Some("Scene")` and redo restores `None`;
undo once more before the existing scene-removal steps so their expected state

Check the selected scene’s recorded picture.

Give Tall a different color from the program and assert the decoded picture in the second file. A scaled program picture can pass the current track-handler assertions.

- A published name must parse as one path segment, so a stray `\` is refused.
- `Compositor::set_outputs` takes a map, so a scene cannot be named twice.
- `render` refuses a scene grown since the last `fit` rather than overrunning
  the backdrop it sized.
- An output not drawn no longer holds an overlay's restart back from the
  preview.
- Only program restarts a media file: a published or recorded scene starting
to draw does not, since its sound would start over in the program mix.
- A stalled or ended source names the program and each published or recorded
  scene that shows it.
- Health tells a scene published again from the one before, so its fresh
counters never read as a stuck encoder.
- A rendition its grant disables no longer asks for the scene to be drawn.
- Preview takes no input until the scene it shows is drawn again.
- A size being typed for a scene follows the scene's renames.
- README: source sessions count the published and recorded scenes that show
them, and a published scene's keyframes share its recording's clock.

Follow-up review of a7a6469 since 8958a8c, accounting for base 299a97a. No new actionable findings.

The follow-up improves output-map uniqueness, fitted-size validation, program-only media restarts, broadcast generation accounting, hidden-preview input gating, and pending-size rename handling. Disabled renditions still receive gate updates through feed(None), allowing bandwidth recovery without drawing. The merge preserves the base's Route/feedback-reader behavior. Direction remains sound, with the shared recording/publication animation clock now documented.

Verification: GitHub-only static review of the substantive updates and their callers/base integration. No quest context, builds, tests, live relay sessions, GPU trials, or performance measurements were run; this does not independently validate runtime behavior or every prior third-party review disposition.

The only change adds focused coverage in rs/moq-studio/src/interact.rs: a differently sized scene bypasses the overlapping top-layer browser and sends coordinates to its own page. It restores the fixture before the remaining assertions. This is useful regression coverage; production behavior is unchanged.

GitHub-only static review. Tests and quest context were not run; earlier runtime/GPU verification limits still apply.

On CodeRabbit's nitpicks in its review:

  • edit.rs explicit program pick: added in a7a6469, with its undo and redo.
  • engine.rs health check on the scene's video: applied as suggested in the same commit.
  • interact.rs input over a scene of another size: 0a1883a asserts in the_pointer_lands_on_the_topmost_page that the top layer takes no input over it. Pointer scaling is per canvas point, which that test already covers.
  • engine.rs decoding the recorded scene's picture: declined. No studio test demuxes and decodes the MP4 files, and the path it would cover is already checked elsewhere. compositor::tests check that an output's texture draws its own scene, and a_published_scene_has_its_own_broadcast decodes a scene's picture after it goes through the same Line.

Map pointer input with the size the preview texture was drawn at.

Interact::update derives its scale from collection.canvas(scene), which is the current scene size. The preview image is laid out from self.drawn, which holds the canvas as of the last render. An undo, or Apply in the Scene sizes form, can change the scene size before that render. Until the next render, pointer positions then scale against a size the texture does not show. A click can reach the wrong page or point.

shown and page_at also read the current collection, so the top-layer rule and the hit-test items follow the new layout while the texture follows the drawn one. Passing the drawn canvas into update corrects only the scale. The items used for hit-testing must also come from the drawn state for the mapping to match the texture.

Decision (maintainer, /quest-complete, 2026-11-07):

When a scene already drawn for a recording gets published, do its animations start over?

  • ✅ Keep shared timing: one drawn picture per scene, so animations start from whichever came first of publishing, picking the scene for recording, or studio start. No restart, and no extra GPU cost.
  • Draw twice, so the broadcast restarts its animations without jumping the recording.

This settles the remaining CodeRabbit thread on restarting animations at publish time.

The virtual camera from #9 reads the program, which published scenes keep;
a camera per published scene stays quest/m0/vcam/linux.md, which no longer
waits on published scenes.

A viewer of the program and of a published portrait scene drawing it sees a
cut on the same frame and hears the tone it restarts at the same moment, each
with the audio scene it picks. The nightly runs every GPU test of the engine,
which it had stopped doing for the published scene's own since #71 renamed it.

Finishes the Composable scenes epic.
