Problem

Composable scenes landed its children, moq-dev/studio#71 (published scenes and scene sources) and moq-dev/studio#77 (audio scenes). Its own remaining work was an end-to-end test: one studio publishes the program at <--broadcast> and a portrait scene drawing it at <--broadcast>/<scene>, each carrying its picked audio scene, and a viewer of each sees and hears the same cut at the same moment.

Also, no CI ran engine::tests::a_published_scene_has_its_own_broadcast. just render-sw picked the engine's GPU tests by the the_program_ prefix, and #71 renamed this test out of it (it was the_program_of_a_further_canvas_has_its_own_broadcast).

Approach

  • engine::tests::the_program_and_a_portrait_cut_together (nightly, just render-sw): a studio on a test relay publishes a 640x360 program, which starts on a red scene, and a published 360x640 scene tall that draws the program source. A viewer of studio and a viewer of studio/tall each decode video and audio. Each decoder runs on its own task and never skips a group (delay.max = None), so a loaded host slows the test down instead of losing what it measures.
    • The cut goes to a green scene that holds a media tone with restart = true. The tone plays from its start as the scene goes on program, so the cut can be heard.
    • The program carries the audio scene on program, which holds the tone. tall picks Portrait, which nests that audio scene and adds a quiet looping bed.
    • Video: both viewers switch from red to green on the same frame. Neither shows red where the other shows green, and every picture between a viewer's first red and its first green is red. The test checks this as a bracket rather than "first green is equal", because an encoder still busy with the previous frame can drop the cut's own frame. That happened under load.
    • Audio: the cut plays the tone again (Run::play == 1), after the last red frame. Green on screen does not mean the tone has begun: Feed::play resets its run at once, and the media driver sets Run::begun only once the file decodes. The test waits for begun, reading the run again at each picture the program's viewer sees, with no bound on how long decoding takes. Each viewer hears it at or after the moment the studio played it on the program clock (Run::begun), and less than 50 ms (the bus latency) plus one 10 ms bus block later. The two viewers hear it within one bus block of each other.
    • Picks: until the tone plays, the program's viewer hears nothing and the portrait's viewer hears the bed. So each broadcast carries its own audio scene, not the program's.
    • The tone also plays once as it opens. The test reads that play's Run::ended and waits for the program to fall quiet after it, so the onset it measures is the cut's.
  • just render-sw now runs every ignored engine::tests test except the PipeWire camera, which runs in its own session. A rename can no longer silently drop a test.
  • Test helpers: routed_tall became routed(relay, path), so both broadcasts use it. red now shares the center-pixel check (center, shows) with the new viewer.
  • Deletes the epic and its links. quest/m1/scene-graph.md and quest/m1/compose/layout.md no longer wait on it.

Impact

  • No user-visible change: this touches tests, the nightly's test filter, and quests only.
  • Public API and wire: none.

Choices made without asking

  • The cut is heard through a media source that restarts as it goes on program. Audio scenes do not follow cuts (decided in the epic), so this is the only sound a cut makes. Restart is an existing per-source setting.
  • The portrait's audio scene nests the program's and adds a bed. If both carried the same sounds, the test could not tell the portrait's pick from the program's audio. Nesting also checks that a nested audio scene stays sample-aligned.
  • "Same moment" for audio means within one 10 ms bus block. Both mixes come from the same bus, block by block, so their samples line up exactly. The two Opus encodes start their frames at different points and smear an onset differently, so the test does not demand the same sample. Measured gap: under 0.2 ms. A misaligned epoch or pick would be off by a block or more.
  • No upper bound from the cut's picture to the tone's start. That gap is how long the media driver takes to open and decode the file. Nobody has set a budget for it, and picking one would be an arbitrary acceptance criterion. The publish path is bounded from the play instead (see Approach).
  • Nightly, not the merge gate. The test needs a Vulkan device and an H.264 encoder, like the engine's other publish tests.
  • a_published_scene_has_its_own_broadcast goes into the nightly despite a rare flake (see Follow-ups). The flake shows a real race that users can hit, and a test that never runs hides it.

Alternatives

  • Keep the the_program_ filter and rename the published-scene test back into it. Rejected: the filter would still drop any engine GPU test whose name doesn't match.

Validation

On nixos (RTX 3070 Ti), run over ssh. Mesa's lavapipe and OpenH264 stood in for the GPU and encoder, as just render-sw sets them up.

  • nix develop --command quest gate just ci on Linux at 7978190 (merged with main at e692c1f): passes, 279 tests.
  • The nightly's engine set (just render-sw's second command, 6 tests) at 7978190, 5 runs: all 6 passed every run.
  • The race the OpenAI review found, reproduced: with a 300 ms sleep injected in the media driver before it sets Run::begun on a replay, the round-3 test fails at expect("the tone's second play began") and the new test passes.
  • At e4ba55b, 6 runs of the engine set: the new test passed 6 of 6. the_program_reaches_a_relay failed once with Stream(NotFound), already quest/m0/relay-test-flake.md. a_published_scene_has_its_own_broadcast failed once with the video finishes: Unroutable, 3 times in about 33 runs across this PR's heads; see Follow-ups.
  • Measured values on lavapipe:
    • The tone is heard 41 to 45 ms after Run::begun (the bus latency).
    • The program and the portrait hear its onset 0.03 to 0.1 ms apart.
    • The bed peaks near 0.018; the program before the cut stays under 0.0004.
  • quest check: passes (in just ci).
  • Not run: macOS. Nothing here is platform-specific, and the nightly's macOS job doesn't run ignored tests.

Follow-ups

  • Worth a quest: unpublishing a scene (a_published_scene_has_its_own_broadcast, ended) sometimes ends its viewer's video subscription with Unroutable instead of a clean finish. The studio closes the scene's broadcast as soon as its encoders finish their tracks locally, so the relay can unroute it before the track's end reaches the viewer. Quitting avoids this by waiting until the relay has what it was sent (Output::close). Unpublishing should wait the same way, or moq-net should deliver a finished track's end after the broadcast closes.
  • Worth a quest: a media file's sound trails its own pictures by about 45 ms in every output. Pictures show when due, but sound is written to the bus when due and mixed a bus latency (50 ms) later. Broadcast sources already write a bus latency ahead (playout::Writer); media sources don't.

Review

  • Reviewer: Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort. Session of this branch, rounds 1 to 4.
  • Round 1 at 7f735fc, 1 finding: bound the tone's timing, not only compare the two outputs. Fixed: the onset is bounded against Run::begun by the bus latency plus a block.
  • Round 2 at e78cf23, 1 finding: tie the audio to the picture cut, since Run::begun moves with decode time. Partly fixed: added played > last red frame. Refuted: an upper bound against the cut's picture would budget the media driver's decode time, which nobody has set, and the maintainer's instructions forbid arbitrary acceptance criteria. A shared delay in the publish path is still caught by the bound from the play.
  • Round 3 at e4ba55b: no findings.
  • Online reviews of e4ba55b, both fixed in 7978190:
    • OpenAI, P2: green on both outputs was taken to mean the tone had begun. Fixed: the test waits for Run::begun; reproduced and verified above.
    • CodeRabbit, nitpick: a non-red picture before green would be taken as the last red frame. Fixed: a viewer asserts every picture between the color it saw last and the next it looks for still shows the last.
  • Round 4 at 7978190 (the design checkpoint): no findings.
  • Reviewed head: 7978190.

A viewer of the program and of a published portrait scene drawing it sees a
cut on the same frame and hears the tone it restarts at the same moment, each
with the audio scene it picks. The nightly runs every GPU test of the engine,
which it had stopped doing for the published scene's own since #71 renamed it.

Finishes the Composable scenes epic.

The tone's rise reaches just under the onset level, so the loudest sample
before the onset said nothing about what played before the cut.

The tone is heard within the bus's latency of when the cut played it, so a
delay both broadcasts share fails too. Viewers never skip a group, the bed is
heard before the cut rather than assumed, and the cut's frame is bracketed,
since an encoder still busy with the frame before drops the cut's own.

Reviewed head e4ba55be64f9dbc2f775e358ded91ca9229570fd against base e056c3da47adcb1bc603c5e29b95fa160eba33ac.

P2: Wait for the restarted audio run before reading its start. At engine.rs:3919–3921, seeing green on both video outputs is treated as proof that the tone has begun. However, Feed::play synchronously replaces the run with begun = None (source.rs:499–505), and the separate media driver sets it only after awaiting decoder creation and the first samples (source.rs:1547–1580). The green Color source can be rendered and received while that audio work is still pending, so a healthy run can fail at this expect under scheduling or decoder delay. Synchronize on play 1 acquiring Run::begun before calculating played, then retain the existing timing assertions. This needs no new decode-time acceptance bound.

Direction: fix the test's audio-readiness barrier before relying on it in the nightly. The broader ignored-test filter correctly includes the published-scene regression while leaving the PipeWire test in its separate session.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the changes and surrounding code. I read the pinned quest context as source but did not execute quest context, tests, or hardware/media reproduction; the reported timing measurements were not independently verified. COMMENT only, not approval.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The engine tests now support broadcast paths and include a relay test for video and audio across a program cut and a published portrait scene. The test command selects engine tests except the PipeWire virtual-camera test. Quest planning documents update the layout description and remove composable scenes as a prerequisite.

Merge Risk: Low · up to e4ba5

The change is mergeable with a small test-coverage follow-up: assert that pictures remain red until green appears so a brief blank frame cannot pass unnoticed.

Check the pictures before green.

If both broadcasts show a black frame before green, sees uses its timestamp as the red predecessor. The cut assertion can then pass despite the blank frame. After each viewer first sees red, assert that the center of every picture before green remains red.

Seeing green on both outputs does not mean the tone's second play has
begun: Feed::play resets its run at once, and the media driver sets
begun only once the file decodes. Wait for it, reading the run again at
each picture the program's viewer sees.

A viewer now also checks that every picture between the color it saw
last and the next it looks for still shows the last, so the frame the
cut bracket calls red is red.

Incremental review of 797819021e5dd6c9d46bf54b910091e097c03bd3 against base e692c1ff3e6d7ced34368da802d3f0ba87499b8e, following 5812241351. The hotkey changes and follow-up plans were accounted for as base changes.

The previous P2 is fixed. The test rereads the tone's run until begun is present, yielding on incoming pictures instead of assuming green video proves audio readiness. It then retains the play-count, onset and inter-output timing assertions. The viewer also preserves the last confirmed color and rejects an intervening non-red picture before green, so an unexpected blank frame cannot become the red predecessor.

No new actionable findings in these changes. Direction: retain both fixes and the delayed-decoder regression evidence; no further code changes requested here.

Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the incremental diff and surrounding test/source code. I read the pinned quest context as source but did not execute quest context, tests, CI or GPU/media reproduction. The reported injected-delay reproduction and repeated passes were not independently verified. COMMENT only, not approval.
