docs(orm8): plain-language pass on the rest of the ORM reference section - #8267
Conversation
….10 relation-nullability rule The coming-from-7 page gains one row: since 8.0.0-rc.10, contract emit reports PSL_RELATION_NULLABILITY_MISMATCH when a relation field and its foreign-key columns disagree on optionality. …ked against rc.10 Banned-term pass on sql-query-builder, pipeline-builder, and transactions-and-runtime (raw-queries and index had none); renamed headings keep their old anchors. Then one checker per page against prisma/orm at 8.0.0-rc.10 (cfccb09be2). Corrections that change what the pages say: orderBy's nulls option never reaches the SQL; returning() also works on SQLite; the runtime comes from db.runtime(), and connect() is optional; the execute option scope only labels a query for middleware; pipeline results are decoded only through eight stages, so after lookup() or group() the whole row is raw; from() takes the roots-map name; several "not exercised" caveats were wrong because Prisma ORM's own tests do run them; MongoDB raw findOneAndUpdate rejects sort and returnDocument at the type level; bare interpolated values in raw SQL work in rc.10. The pages no longer claim their examples are transcribed from a test suite. Reports are in docs/orm-docs-audit/c21-orm-reference/, to be removed before merge. Seven readers, seven fixers, one per page half. Wording, order, and examples; facts unchanged except where a reader's question had a verified answer: contract defaults apply on SQL-builder insert(), no ON CONFLICT in the SQL builder, select() adds rather than replaces, the pipeline builder's full helper and update-operator lists, redact() and unwind() and the option-object stages shown, the client's binding forms and verifyMarker, the abort phases, PreparedExecution. The pipeline page grew by about 100 lines of examples readers asked for; the other pages held their length. Flat line budget. Definitions moved to first use (contract, runtime, binding, scope, the .node rule as a table), the type-id convention stated once per page with the common ids, expr() shown with its import, the MongoDB client created in the pipeline and raw examples, contract defaults dropped from insert examples, withTransaction() described by its real use. Facts unchanged except where a reader's question had a verified answer (build once and run once for generated defaults; .returns() takes a string or { codecId, nullable }, not a column; both raw aggregate routes pass an ObjectId through). Pages total 3,434 lines.

Flat line budget, cutting preferred. Corrections that change what the pages say, each looked up in rc.10: in() and notIn() take an unbuilt subquery, the same as exists(); the type-id rule is pg/ plus the type name plus @1; every table is in public today; one non-listed pipeline stage anywhere makes the whole result raw; the abort phases are six values; match() takes MongoOrExpr.of([...]) for OR; the manual connection path is for statements outside a transaction; a prepared statement has no close(); param() binds a Temporal.Instant for a DateTime; releasing a manual connection needs a commit or rollback first. Pages total 3,423 lines. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: willbot <w.a.madden+machine@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Will Madden <madden@prisma.io>
Last wording round, cutting preferred. Each rule now stated once: the joined-column rule, the distinctOn() ordering, the .node table (one copy near match(), one in the expression helpers), the type-id convention with the contract type named beside the PostgreSQL type. Facts changed only where a reader's question had a verified answer: annotate a raw fragment with the type PostgreSQL computes (pg/numeric@1 for EXTRACT), param() is for a value whose inferred id is not the column's, countBigInt() compares against a bigint, the tx.execute() result, a nullable entry in a .returnsRow() spec, the RUNTIME.RAW_ROW_COLUMN_MISSING and SqlQueryError.sqlState failures, sort() keeps findOneAndUpdate() available. Pages total 3,412 lines. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: willbot <w.a.madden+machine@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Will Madden <madden@prisma.io>
Twenty-six corrections across four pages, each backed by a source file in prisma/orm at rc.10. Among them: the pipeline builder's callback project() has no 0 form, redact() takes the fn value itself, findOneAndUpdate() is offered only straight after match(), and update results carry upsertedCount and upsertedId only after an upsert insert; the SQL builder's limit() and offset() also take a numeric expression, .returns() takes { codecId, nullable }, and tables can sit in a namespace block; transactions and prepared statements are unavailable on MongoDB rather than PostgreSQL only, MongoDB's runtime.execute() serves update and delete commands only, and the RuntimeExecuteOptions table lists scope again.

Raw MongoDB results keep each value as stored, so only an id MongoDB generated is an ObjectId. The nulls-last example sorts a nullable column. for await saves nothing on PostgreSQL, where every row is loaded first. idle_in_transaction_session_timeout ends an idle transaction and transaction_timeout caps its total length. The manual-control examples roll back on every failure path before releasing the connection. The landing page's raw-queries sentence is a full sentence. The page said the ORM client runs a query when you await it. That is true only of all(), createAll(), updateAll(), and deleteAll(), which return a result object; first(), create(), update(), upsert(), delete(), and aggregate() send the query when called. PostgreSQL and MongoDB now each have their own example and explanation instead of alternating sentence by sentence, and the section describing how the reference pages are organised is gone. Before, the SQL query builder page introduced
db.sqllike this:After:
The internal construction paragraph is gone; what a reader needs before the first example is there instead.
The decision
This PR is the plain-language pass (C21) on the rest of
orm/reference/: the SQL query builder, raw queries, the pipeline builder, transactions and runtime, and the section's landing page. It follows the same method as #8260 on the ORM client page: banned terms replaced, a fact check against the source, four reader rounds with a fixer per page half, and a final fact re-check. Every heading and anchor is unchanged; two headings that carried the word "terminals" were renamed with the old anchor pinned. The error reference page is out of scope: it is generated from prisma/orm by
apps/docs/scripts/generate-error-reference.mjs, so its wording is fixed upstream. Two decisions a reviewer should know about:
8.0.0-rc.10(cfccb09be2). The one rc.10 behaviour change on these pages, buffered PostgreSQL queries releasing their pooled connection before rows are read, is now stated where streaming is described. What the fact checks corrected
About fifty corrections across the four pages. The ones that change what a reader would do:
orderBy()'snullsoption is accepted by TypeScript and ignored by the builder; the page now says so and shows the workaround.returning()works on SQLite as well as PostgreSQL.lateralJoin(),outerLateralJoin(), anddistinctOn()do not.db.runtime();connect()is optional and throwsDRIVER.ALREADY_CONNECTEDafter any query has run.scopeonly labels a query for middleware. It does not choose where the query runs.lookup()orgroup()the whole row comes back raw,_idincluded.from()takes the collection name from the contract's roots map, not "the lowercase plural".unwind, facet, bucketAuto, setWindowFields, andpipe()all run against a live MongoDB in prisma/orm's own tests.in()andnotIn()take an unbuilt subquery, the same asexists().@default(uuid())are applied by the SQL builder'sinsert(), so the examples no longer hand-write ids. There is noON CONFLICTin the SQL builder.findOneAndUpdate()rejectssortandreturnDocumentat the type level; theRawFindOneAndUpdateCommandroute is shown.param()for aDateTimebinds aTemporal.Instant.The final re-check after the reader rounds found twenty-six more, most of them claims the rounds had added or sharpened:
project()has no0form, so it cannot drop a field.redact()takes thefn.*value itself, not.node.findOneAndUpdate()andfindOneAndDelete()are offered straight aftermatch()and after no other stage,sort()included. Update results carryupsertedCountandupsertedIdonly after an upsert inserts. The named-argument helper table gained the seven helpers it was missing.limit()andoffset()also take a numeric expression,.returns()takes{ codecId, nullable }as well as a string, a model sits inpublicunless the contract puts it in anamespaceblock, and a comparison against auuidcolumn needs noparam()outsidefns.raw.runtime.execute()serves update and delete commands only and throwsRUNTIME.MONGO_STATISTICS_UNSUPPORTEDfor the rest. TheRuntimeExecuteOptionstable listsscopeagain. ThenativeEnumsexample now uses the namespace and values the fixture has..returns()does accept a contract column, so the sentence saying it was a type error is gone.db.query.rawCommand()runs any raw command, not only aggregate.Temporalis global from Node.js 26.8.2.Three claims the checkers could not settle from the source, left as written because they are PostgreSQL's own rules:
distinctOn()columns must lead theorderBy()keys, a selected alias is rejected insideHAVING, andidle_in_transaction_session_timeoutis the setting that ends an idle transaction. The Node.js 22.18 requirement for JSON import attributes and theesnext.disposablelib name are TypeScript and Node.js facts, also left as written. Also on this branch, because #8261 landed while it was open: the coming-from-7 page gains one row for the rc.10 rule that a relation field and its foreign-key columns must agree on optionality (
PSL_RELATION_NULLABILITY_MISMATCH), andcspell.jsongains the two pinned anchors and two MongoDB operator names. How it was checked
check-plain.sh,cspell, and the docs link check pass on every page. What a reviewer should know
redact(),unwind(),facet,bucket, the fullfn.*helper list, the fourteen update operators). The other pages held their length.txthatdb.transaction()passes is not exported publicly (the page derives it withParameters<...>), and there is no published list of type ids.Alternatives considered
planvariable in every example tobuilt. Rejected: the pages say once thatbuild()returns the built query and the examples call itplan, and 60 code blocks across four pages would have changed for no reader gain.tags String[]andviews Intto the pipeline page's schema so the array and numeric examples run as printed. Rejected for now: the schema mirrors the ORM client page's, and the examples say which field they assume.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
