Exchanges page shows its rows at once, and slow counts finish on the server - #406
On app-dev (5.8M exchanges), the Exchanges page's status numbers and chart never showed up. In the last 24 hours, 174 of the 176 requests behind them hit the 30s database limit on the Processing count. The Settings page's Documents & storage panel failed the same way, giving a 500: to count exchanges "without files", it read every exchange older than the bucket's shortest rule (1 day, temp1/).
Exchanges page
The list asks for its rows without the total (count=false, which the search now honors), so the rows show at once. The footer's total arrives with the status numbers.
The status numbers and the chart get 5 seconds in the request. Anything slower is finished on the server (SlowCounts: at most 2 at a time per node, each with up to 10 minutes on the database, and the answer is kept for 5 minutes). A count nobody has asked about for 2 minutes is skipped when its turn comes. Until then the summary says counting: true, the page asks again every 15s, and that status shows no number.
Success is now counted newest first: 12s → 0.9s on app-dev.
A new Postgres partial index, ix_xchange_result_bad_response, takes the Bad response count from 4s to 9ms. It's built concurrently, which took 1.6s on 3.1M exchanges.
Settings
"Without files now" is replaced by "Oldest exchange". The panel answers in 0.16s, down from 14.6s on the local copy.
On a local copy with 3.1M exchanges, the rows show in 0.5s and most numbers in 5.6s. Processing comes after about 20s.
The "Still processing" and "Needs attention" lists are still slow on app-dev, because finding their rows is the slow part.
Exchange row searches can skip the total-count query with count=false, so rows can load before counts finish.
Status counts and chart buckets use a five-second request budget. Slower calculations continue in a per-node background service, with a 10-minute command timeout, up to two concurrent counts, and cached results.
The Exchanges page displays incomplete counts and polls every 15 seconds while calculations continue.
Settings retention replaces the missing-files count with the oldest exchange start date and updates the related warning.
The API and SDK now allow incomplete status counts to be null. Retention responses no longer include withoutFiles.
A concurrent partial index was added for bad-response counts.
Risk
risk:medium. Count results are now asynchronous, and the API/SDK response contracts changed. Clients that require numeric counts or withoutFiles may need updates.
Security-sensitive areas
No direct authentication, authorization, or secret-handling changes are indicated. The change affects database query execution, cancellation, and background work limits.
Test coverage impact
Integration and UI tests were added or updated for deferred counts, cancellation, search without counts, incomplete counts, and oldest-exchange retention notices. Test execution results were not supplied.
Deployment and operational concerns
Apply the new concurrent index migration. Concurrent index creation may take time and consume database resources; the migration’s rollback drops the index.
SlowCounts is in-memory and per node. Each node can run up to two counts, so total concurrency scales with node count. Cached results are not shared between nodes.
Clients that consume the updated API should handle null status counts and the removed withoutFiles field.
Exchange summaries can return incomplete status counts and date buckets while background calculations run. The exchange page uses those results for totals and pagination. Retention reporting replaces missing-file counts with the start date of the oldest exchange.

Summary relies on SearchyRequest.Clone to retain an independent, unmodified copy of every special filter; if Clone shares condition or filter collections, FilteredRowsAsync can remove filters from the copy used by deferred work.
The subsequently cached count or histogram may describe more exchanges than the requested view.
This can occur when: A summary with a special filter exceeds its request budget and is recounted using Copy(asked).
Compare Oldest with the minimum StartedOn across all exchanges.
The assertions at lines 279-281 accept any Oldest value at least 45 days old. The notice check then builds its expected text from that same value, so the test never compares Oldest with the exchange it creates. A planner that returns a wrong date, such as a constant from 50 days ago, passes.
Other tests in the Bitween collection leave 45-day exchanges in the shared database. A minimum over this test's own rows can therefore differ from the database minimum. Compare Oldest with MinAsync over all Xchange rows instead. The planner computes Oldest with the same unfiltered query. xUnit runs tests in one collection sequentially by default, so the value does not change between planning and the assertion.

Pause live refresh before testing the counting poll.
The test at ExchangesList.test.tsx:329-352 returns counting: true on every summary request, so the mock never changes. It also does not advance timers. Removing the counting-specific poll in ExchangesPage.tsx:132-146 would leave this test passing.
Live refresh also refetches the breakdown every refreshMs, which starts at 15 seconds. With live refresh on, a second summary request arrives after 15 seconds whether or not the counting branch exists, so a test with live refresh on cannot detect the counting poll's removal. Add a test that:

Add a test for the deferred Summary count under a special filter.
A_count_left_to_the_background_is_given_out_once_it_is_in (ExchangeSummaryTests.cs:219-248) covers SlowCounts with a constant callback. It never calls Summary.Handle. The tests that call Summary.Handle use the default budget and small seeded data, so none reaches the background path. As a result, no test checks the special filters on a completed background count. A change that drops a special filter when Summary rebuilds its background query (Summary.cs:100-102, 113-116) can pass the suite.
Summary.Budget is a fixed internal static readonly TimeSpan (Summary.cs:165), so a test cannot force a request into the background path today. Make the budget overridable, for example through a parameter or a test-settable seam. A test can then:
Seed rows that match a special filter.
Call Summary.Handle with a budget shorter than the count.
Poll SlowCounts.TryGet until the background count completes.
Assert that the completed count matches the filtered rows.
The seam is a small refactor in Summary and its callers. The test itself is short.

Keeping these without the token. SAVEPOINT and ROLLBACK TO SAVEPOINT read no rows, so they return at once. The token would also do harm here: by the time the rollback runs, deadline has already been cancelled, so passing it would cancel the rollback itself and leave the transaction aborted for every later count. For the same reason, the savepoint before a later count would throw once the shared deadline had passed, failing the request instead of moving that count to the background.

Stop swallowing real errors in WithinBudget.
The catch filter in WithinBudget is when (deadline.IsCancellationRequested). It does not check the exception's cause. Any exception that surfaces after the shared five-second timer fires is treated as a timeout. The database error is then replaced by a null result, which the page reports as still counting. Log the swallowed exception before returning default, or restrict the filter to exception types that the provider raises on cancellation. The comment's claim that "a real error still surfaces" does not hold for errors that occur after the deadline.

Compare the oldest exchange against its own prefix rule, not the current one.
The new "Some already are" clause in Notices takes the globally oldest exchange and checks it against the current prefix's file-retention period. An exchange written under an older prefix can keep its files under a different rule, or under no age-based rule. The notice then names an exchange that still has its files. The base version counted per prefix and did not make this claim. Either remove the clause, or compute the oldest date per FilesPrefix and apply that prefix's rule. If you remove the clause, update the assertion in ExchangeRetentionTests.cs that checks the "Some already are" text.

Stop serving a cached count that refreshes keep failing to replace.
SlowCounts.TryGet returns the last successful count, Last, with no age check. A failed refresh logs and leaves Last unchanged, and the next refresh runs after five minutes. While the page keeps asking, Summary returns that stale exact total with Counting false. The list then uses it for Next and for the "Select all N matching" label, so newer rows can be hidden. Forget checks Counting and AskedOn, then calls entries.TryRemove(key, out _). A Start on the same key can revive the entry between those steps. Leaving this one. It needs an entry nobody has asked about for 30 minutes to be asked for again at the same moment another request runs Forget. The worst outcome is that view being counted a second time: no wrong number is given out, because the orphaned count's answer is never read. A lock on every ask isn't worth that.

Keep Clear visible and disable count-dependent bulk actions while a total is unknown.
When a status count is null, total is undefined. For an all-matching selection, selectedCount then becomes 0, and the bulk action bar at line 602 is not rendered. Clear, Export files, and Retry selected are removed with it, even though the selection stays in state. The bar returns only when the count arrives. A count can remain null while a slow count runs.
Keep the bar visible for an all-matching selection while the total is unknown. Show a placeholder for the count. Disable Export files and Retry selected in that state. The OUTLIVE_FILES notice no longer says "Some already are". The test now compares Oldest with the database's minimum.
The footer total and the select-all bar wait while the list shows placeholder rows. Export and Retry are disabled while the count is unknown.
The docs say the 10 minutes is database time, at most 2 at a time per node. The WithinBudget comment now says what happens to an error after the deadline.
A UI test checks that the page asks again every 15s while counting, with live refresh paused.
Keeping as is:
A test for a null oldest: the panel shows "None" through one plain guard, and you rated it low value.
A seam for Summary.Budget: it adds a test-only hook to production code. The risk it guards against, a special filter lost from the copy the background count filters from, isn't there. SearchyRequest.Clone copies every condition and filter (SW.PrimitiveTypes 10.0.1), and each background run filters from a fresh copy.

@hamzahalq Acknowledged the fixes reported in bf5feba8. I have not independently verified the commit or test results.
I accept leaving the null-oldest test and the Summary.Budget test seam out. I will not press those suggestions further. Your explanation of SearchyRequest.Clone addresses the filter-copy concern.
The savepoint and Forget findings remain separate; their respective threads should carry the conclusions.

On app-dev (5.8M exchanges), the Exchanges page's status numbers and chart never showed up. In the last 24 hours, 174 of the 176 requests behind them hit the 30s database limit on the Processing count. The Settings page's Documents & storage panel failed the same way, giving a 500: to count exchanges "without files", it read every exchange older than the bucket's shortest rule (1 day,
temp1/).Exchanges page
count=false, which the search now honors), so the rows show at once. The footer's total arrives with the status numbers.SlowCounts: at most 2 at a time per node, each with up to 10 minutes on the database, and the answer is kept for 5 minutes). A count nobody has asked about for 2 minutes is skipped when its turn comes. Until then the summary sayscounting: true, the page asks again every 15s, and that status shows no number.ix_xchange_result_bad_response, takes the Bad response count from 4s to 9ms. It's built concurrently, which took 1.6s on 3.1M exchanges.Settings
On a local copy with 3.1M exchanges, the rows show in 0.5s and most numbers in 5.6s. Processing comes after about 20s.
The "Still processing" and "Needs attention" lists are still slow on app-dev, because finding their rows is the slow part.
