Issue being fixed or feature implemented

Fixes #7582 at the block assembly level, as an alternative to #7728.

CheckProUpServTx() verifies the operator signature against the masternode list of the previous block, and block connection applies provider transactions in block order without checking again who signed them. A ProUpServTx signed with the operator key that an earlier transaction in the same block changes (ProUpRegTx or ProUpSharedRegTx with a new operator key) or revokes (ProUpRevTx) therefore still applies: it writes the previous operator's service fields back and, after a key change, revives the masternode the change just PoSe-banned. The mempool accepts both transactions together, and block assembly orders them by feerate, so a displaced operator can broadcast a low-feerate service update and wait for the key change to be mined.

The reverse order is harmless: the key change resets the operator fields the service update set. This PR makes honest block assembly always produce that order, instead of keeping the two transactions out of the mempool as #7728 does. Compared to #7728, no valid service update the operator already broadcast is evicted or refused for being paired with a key change, and mempool contents do not depend on the order in which a node received the two transactions. Consensus is unchanged: a block with the harmful order is still valid, so a miner ignoring this policy can still produce one, as with #7728.

What was done?

  • Block assembly (BlockAssembler::addPackageTxs): when a package contains an operator key change or revocation, the masternode's pending ProUpServTxs, with their unconfirmed ancestors, are pulled into the package and placed before it. New helper CTxMemPool::GetServiceUpdatesBeforeKeyChange().

    • A service update is left out if its own package fails the usual transaction checks, if it is one the mempool would refuse as unorderable (see below; the mempool rejects those on entry, but a reorg can return such ancestors below an update already in the pool), or if its package has a service update of a masternode whose key already changed in the block.
    • If the pulled-in updates do not fit, they are all left out and the key change goes in without them, so pending updates, however many, cannot hold it back.
    • Once a key change is in the template, no later ProUpServTx of that masternode is added, so an update left out, or one that only becomes eligible while the template is built, cannot follow it.
    • Whether a transaction is a key change is decided by CTxMemPool::GetKeyChangeTarget() against the current tip list, not when the transaction entered the mempool, so a registrar update that becomes a key change after a reorg is handled too.
  • Mempool policy: a ProUpServTx that block assembly could not reliably put ahead of a key change is rejected with protx-dup (CTxMemPool::IsUnorderableServiceUpdate(), called next to existsProviderTxConflict()):

    • With a pending operator key change among its ancestors (it spends one, directly or through other pending transactions). It can only be mined after that change. For its own masternode it would restore the previous operator's fields. For another masternode, pulling it in would require that other change.
    • With a pending asset lock, asset unlock or MNHF signal among its ancestors. Their own checks during block assembly could keep the pulled-in update, and the key change with it, out of the block.

    Such a transaction can only arrive after the ancestor it spends, so every node makes the same decision. Package acceptance checks package members against the pool before adding any of them, so a package carrying both transactions is not caught. Packages are regtest-only.

  • Reorg: MaybeUpdateMempoolForReorg() moves the deterministic masternode list tip to the new chain tip before re-adding disconnected transactions. Before, a key change returned to the mempool was compared with the list of the disconnected block, which already had the new key, and was not recognized as a key change. This change was first proposed in fix: drop stale operator service updates around an operator key change #7728 and is kept as its own commit.

  • Release note doc/release-notes-7857.md.

This keeps pending provider transactions in the mempool and only changes their order in block templates, so it does not depend on how they were relayed.

How Has This Been Tested?

Built on macOS arm64 with --enable-debug --enable-werror --enable-crash-hooks.

New unit tests in src/test/evo_deterministicmns_tests.cpp, using block templates unless noted:

  • test_miner_service_update_before_key_change:
    • a low-fee ProUpServTx is placed before a high-fee key change or revocation of its masternode;
    • a registrar update that keeps the operator key is ordered by fee as usual;
    • a ProUpServTx that cannot be mined (it takes another masternode's address) does not hold the key change back.
  • test_mempool_rejects_unorderable_service_update, through ProcessTransaction: a ProUpServTx is rejected with protx-dup when funded from a pending key change of its masternode, from a transaction spending one, from a pending key change of another masternode, or from a pending asset lock. An independently funded one is accepted.
  • test_miner_service_update_before_reorged_key_change: a key change returned to the mempool by InvalidateBlock still counts as the masternode's pending key change, so a second one is rejected with protx-dup, and a pending ProUpServTx is still placed before it.
  • test_miner_service_update_before_key_change_surviving_reorg: a registrar update that kept the operator key when it entered the mempool becomes a key change after a reorg, and a service update signed with the restored key still goes in before it.
  • test_miner_service_update_never_after_key_change: a ProUpServTx that follows a key change in the pool (it spends it) is never mined after it, while one following a registrar update that keeps the key still is.
  • test_miner_key_change_not_held_back_after_reorg: a reorg returns a zero-fee key change of another masternode below a pending ProUpServTx; the key change of the update's own masternode is mined and the update is left out.
  • test_miner_service_update_with_parent_before_key_change: a ProUpServTx funded by an ordinary pending transaction goes in as parent, service update, key change.
  • test_miner_key_change_without_room_for_service_update: with room for either the parent and the service update or the key change, but not all three, the key change goes in without the service update, and the template stays within its size limit.
  • test_miner_key_change_not_held_back_by_service_updates: two independently funded ProUpServTxs that fit ahead of a key change only one at a time; the key change goes in and neither update does.
  • test_miner_key_change_not_held_back_by_other_key_change: a key change of masternode A goes in without A's service updates; a service update of masternode B funded by one of them is left out instead of holding back B's key change.

Reverting each piece in turn makes the corresponding case fail:

  • the pull-in in block assembly (both ordering tests);
  • the reorg tip move (only the reorg test);
  • limiting the rejection to the update's own masternode (the other-masternode case);
  • removing asset locks from the rejection (the asset-lock case);
  • leaving unorderable service updates in the pull-in (test_miner_key_change_not_held_back_after_reorg);
  • holding the key change back when the pulled-in updates do not fit (both block-space tests);
  • pulling in an update package with a service update of a masternode whose key already changed in the block (test_miner_key_change_not_held_back_by_other_key_change).

Run at the head of this PR:

  • Unit tests: all pass (test_dash, 1071 cases).
  • Functional tests: all pass: feature_asset_locks.py, feature_dip3_deterministicmns.py --descriptors, feature_llmq_chainlocks.py, feature_masternode_shares.py, feature_protx_version.py, mempool_packages.py, mempool_reorg.py, mining_basic.py, rpc_masternode.py, rpc_packages.py.
  • Lint: test/lint/all-lint.py reports only an existing cppcheck warning in src/governance/object.cpp, which this PR does not touch.

Breaking Changes

None for consensus. Mempool policy: a ProUpServTx spending an output of a pending operator key change, asset lock, asset unlock or MNHF signal is rejected until that transaction confirms. It can then be sent again, signed with the operator key current at that point. Mining policy: pending service updates of a masternode that do not fit in the block ahead of its key change are left out of that block, and become invalid once the key change confirms.

Walkthrough

The change rejects service updates from the mempool when their pending transaction ancestors make them unorderable around an operator-key change. During block assembly, eligible service updates and their ancestors are ordered before the key change when they pass transaction checks and fit block limits. Reorg processing refreshes the masternode-list tip before re-adding disconnected transactions.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Both supplied blocking findings are confirmed: reorg-surviving entries can retain stale key-change classification, and a skipped service update can become eligible later during the same template construction. Both paths defeat the PR's stated ordering guarantee. Verification was static; the supplied CI snapshot shows successful lint, multiple platform builds, and the no-wallet test job, with several build and test jobs still pending.

In `src/txmempool.cpp`:
- [BLOCKING] src/txmempool.cpp:1105-1107: Refresh key-change classification for entries surviving a reorg
  `GetKeyChangeTarget()` relies on `isKeyChangeProTx`, which `addUncheckedProTx()` computes against the masternode list at admission. The reorg tip move fixes classification for re-added transactions, but neither `MaybeUpdateMempoolForReorg()` nor `removeForReorg()` refreshes that flag for entries already in the pool.

  Confirm an operator change from A to B, then accept an independently funded registrar update R that retains B. R is classified as not changing the key. Disconnect the block introducing B: R survives the finality and maturity checks and now changes A to B, but its flag remains false. When the disconnected original key change has no waiting InstantSend lock, its re-admission is rejected because R already occupies B's mempool key slot; removing that original transaction does not remove independently funded R. A service update signed by A can then be accepted. If R has the higher feerate, this helper returns no service updates for it, allowing assembly to mine R before the service update and reproduce the unwanted revival.

  Determine key changes against the current list when enforcing these policies, or refresh surviving entries when the list changes, including before reorg re-admission. Cover a registrar update that was already pending before the reorg; the existing reorg test covers only a newly re-added key change. `IsUnorderableServiceUpdate()` also relies on the same stale flag.

In `src/node/miner.cpp`:
- [BLOCKING] src/node/miner.cpp:635-637: Keep skipped service updates excluded for the rest of the template
  Failure of `TestPackageTransactions(updatePackage)` does not mean the service update will remain ineligible throughout this template. That check calls `ChainlockHandler::IsTxSafeForMining()`, which reads the current clock on every call and becomes true at the ten-minute transaction-age timeout (`src/chainlock/handler.cpp:257–268`). Holding `cs_main` and the mempool lock does not freeze time.

  An eligible high-fee key change can encounter an independently funded, low-fee service update just before that timeout. The pull-in check fails, so the update is omitted and the key change enters the block. If normal selection reaches the service update after the timeout, its package check passes and it is appended after the key change. The failed pull-in does not mark the update as excluded, and later selection does not check whether its masternode's key change is already in the block. Because special-transaction checks still use the previous block's list, the resulting template is consensus-valid and restores the displaced operator's service fields, including reviving a masternode banned by the key change.

  Freeze the relevant eligibility decision for the template, or, once the key change is selected, exclude each skipped service update and every later package containing it from that template.

🔴 Blocking: Refresh key-change classification for entries surviving a reorg

GetKeyChangeTarget() relies on isKeyChangeProTx, which addUncheckedProTx() computes against the masternode list at admission. The reorg tip move fixes classification for re-added transactions, but neither MaybeUpdateMempoolForReorg() nor removeForReorg() refreshes that flag for entries already in the pool.

Confirm an operator change from A to B, then accept an independently funded registrar update R that retains B. R is classified as not changing the key. Disconnect the block introducing B: R survives the finality and maturity checks and now changes A to B, but its flag remains false. Determine key changes against the current list when enforcing these policies, or refresh surviving entries when the list changes, including before reorg re-admission. Cover a registrar update that was already pending before the reorg; the existing reorg test covers only a newly re-added key change. IsUnorderableServiceUpdate() also relies on the same stale flag.

Resolved (re-reviewed at daeb1db7): Your GetKeyChangeTarget() now compares the payload's operator key against the current tip masternode list, and both mining selection and the service-update ancestor policy use that helper rather than the admission-time flag. The surviving-reorg test specifically checks ordering for a registrar update that becomes a key change after its original key-setting block is disconnected.

Withdrawn (re-reviewed at 7645a26d): I withdraw this finding: your previously reviewed GetKeyChangeTarget() already classified mining dependencies against the current tip list rather than the admission-time flag. Your current code retains that behavior, and the surviving-reorg test explicitly checks service-update ordering before a registrar update that becomes a key change.

🔴 Blocking: Keep skipped service updates excluded for the rest of the template

Failure of TestPackageTransactions(updatePackage) does not mean the service update will remain ineligible throughout this template. Resolved (re-reviewed at daeb1db7): Your keyChangedMNs tracking now persists across accepted packages, and the package scan rejects a service update for any masternode whose key has already changed in the template. This also excludes an update skipped earlier if it becomes eligible later, without relying on its transaction checks remaining unchanged.

Withdrawn (re-reviewed at 7645a26d): I withdraw this finding: your previously reviewed head already used template-wide keyChangedMNs to reject later packages containing service updates for an affected masternode, including updates reconsidered after eligibility changes. Your current head retains that protection and additionally filters affected ancestors before pulling in another update.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Verified the complete PR diff at daeb1db: both prior blocking findings are fixed, and no additional blocking defect was confirmed. One nonblocking suggestion remains for testing pulled-in ancestors and block-space accounting. This was a static review; the supplied CI snapshot at 2026-10-08T22:17:10Z shows successful lint, multiple builds, and nowallet tests, while TSAN, SQLite, and standard Linux tests plus multiprocess and ASAN builds remain pending.

- [SUGGESTION] src/test/evo_deterministicmns_tests.cpp:1661-1664: Cover pulled-in ancestors and insufficient block space
  This ordering scenario uses independently funded transactions, so it does not exercise pulling an ordinary unconfirmed ancestor into the service-update package. None of the new template scenarios constrains block space to exercise the added extra-size accounting and key-change deferral in miner.cpp. Add a low-fee ordinary parent funding a low-fee service update, paired with an independently funded high-fee key change. With sufficient space, assert parent < service update < key change. With a block-size limit that fits either the parent/service-update package or the key change individually, but not their union, assert that the key change is omitted and the template stays within the configured limit. These assertions would protect two new behavior paths that the standalone ordering checks cannot detect regressions in.

Resolved (re-reviewed at b7b899c2): Your new ancestor scenario verifies the actual template order parent → service update → key change. The constrained-space scenario also verifies that the parent and service update are included, the key change is omitted, and the template remains below its configured size limit.

it's indeed updated synchronously but after this function.
Firstly, calling here UpdatedMNListTip can cause inconsistency in case if some exception will be throw after this line but before tip will be actually switched.

Secondly, the consensus checks already uses pindex instead tip: PreChecks hands m_chain.Tip() to CheckSpecialTxForMempool at src/validation.cpp:1108, and CheckProUpRegTx uses GetListForBlock(pindexPrev). Instead using GetListAtTip() should be used GetListForBlock.
GetListAtTip() is an legacy artefact from the times when dmnman had been a global object and chain had been global object, and there was no snapshot.

Instead hardcoding here UpdateMNListTip here I would suggest to call GetListForBlock in this PR; as follow-up in the future GetListAtTip should be considered deprecated or at least its usage should be reduced over time in the future

By the time MaybeUpdateMempoolForReorg() re-adds transactions after blocks were disconnected, DisconnectTip()/ConnectTip() have already moved m_chain, and UpdatedMNListTip() only assigns tipIndex under cs, so this points the list at the actual current tip (possibly an intermediate one in a multi-step reorg, which is still the real tip at that moment), never ahead of m_chain. An exception during the re-add does not undo the already-completed tip switch. Without this, the list can keep pointing at a disconnected block during the re-add, until a subsequent tip notification updates it. That closes the window this PR depends on; test_miner_service_update_before_reorged_key_change now covers it (a second key change after the reorg must be rejected with protx-dup, which fails without the tip move).

To see what taking the list for an explicit block would look like, I implemented it on top of this PR: UdjinM6:refactor/mempool-explicit-mn-list (UdjinM6@768c4eddba). The mempool no longer calls GetListAtChainTip(); existsProviderTxConflict(), existsProviderTxCrossSchemeConflict(), removeProTxConflicts()/removeProTxSpentCollateralConflicts(), addUnchecked()/addUncheckedProTx(), GetKeyChangeTarget(), IsUnorderableServiceUpdate(), GetServiceUpdatesBeforeKeyChange() and removeForBlock() take the block whose list applies: the chain tip on admission, the parent of the connected block in removeForBlock(), and pindexPrev in block assembly. That replaces the tip move here, and the reorg test above passes with it and fails if the mempool reads the manager's tip again. It is +74/−63 in 6 production files plus +41/−31 in tests, including small signature changes in two upstream test files (mempool_tests.cpp, policyestimator_tests.cpp), so I'd keep it out of this PR and keep the tip move here as the minimal fix.

hm. it seems as chain is available only here:

CTxMemPool::removeForReorg(CChain& chain, std::function<bool(txiter)> check_final_and_mature)

It means that addUnchecked and other members doesn't have tip. ok, let's keep it as it is now; and re-consider in the future. Maybe some future refactorings of mempool will narrow scope and make it simplier to do, maybe something like bitcoin#31122 will help. Haven't dig deep

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Reviewed the complete four-commit PR diff at b7b899c and independently confirmed that all three prior findings are fixed. One new blocker remains: the mandatory, unbounded service-update pull-in lets the operator being replaced pin an otherwise mineable key change. Validation was static only; the supplied CI snapshot shows successful lint, several platform builds, and nowallet tests, with other build and test jobs still in progress.

In `src/node/miner.cpp`:
- [BLOCKING] src/node/miner.cpp:658-667: Bound service-update pull-in so the displaced operator cannot pin a key change
  This makes the aggregate size of every eligible pending service update a mandatory condition for mining the key change. `existsProviderTxConflict()` permits multiple independently funded ProUpServTxs for the same masternode when they claim distinct, otherwise unused addresses, and `GetServiceUpdatesBeforeKeyChange()` returns all of them without a per-masternode bound. The current operator can therefore submit normally admitted updates whose combined size exceeds the default 2,000,000-byte block limit. Even a highest-feerate, independently funded owner-authorized key change is then skipped here, although it fits by itself.

  Mining some updates does not remove the remaining independently funded updates with distinct addresses or retire the operator key. The operator can replenish the backlog between blocks and keep the key change excluded at miners following this policy for as long as they maintain that backlog. This newly gives the operator being replaced control over key retirement under ordinary miner settings, rather than merely causing the documented finite delay for insufficient space.

  Bound the mandatory pull-in or provide a fallback that mines the key change while omitting excess updates. The existing template-wide `keyChangedMNs` guard already prevents omitted updates from following it, so requiring every update to fit is unnecessary to prevent the harmful order. Add a regression with multiple independently funded updates whose aggregate size exceeds the normal block limit and verify that the key change remains mineable.

🔴 Blocking: Bound service-update pull-in so the displaced operator cannot pin a key change

This makes the aggregate size of every eligible pending service update a mandatory condition for mining the key change. existsProviderTxConflict() permits multiple independently funded ProUpServTxs for the same masternode when they claim distinct, otherwise unused addresses, and GetServiceUpdatesBeforeKeyChange() returns all of them without a per-masternode bound.

The existing template-wide keyChangedMNs guard already prevents omitted updates from following it, so requiring every update to fit is unnecessary to prevent the harmful order. Add a regression with multiple independently funded updates whose aggregate size exceeds the normal block limit and verify that the key change remains mineable.

Resolved (re-reviewed at ed244e50): Your combined size/sigop check now clears the pulled-in updates instead of rejecting the original key-change package, so independently funded service updates cannot pin an otherwise eligible key change. The constrained-space tests explicitly check that the key change is included while the updates are omitted.

… to the mempool

MaybeUpdateMempoolForReorg() re-accepts the transactions of disconnected
blocks before the block tip notifications move the deterministic masternode
list. The mempool checks provider transactions against the list at the tip,
so meanwhile it sees the list of the disconnected block. A key change that
block confirmed already shows its new operator key there and is no longer
recorded as a key change when it returns to the mempool; validForProTxKey
of returning updates records a key that is not current.

Move the list tip to the new chain tip before re-adding transactions. It
never moves ahead of the chain; the later tip notification moves it on to
the final tip.

The change was first proposed in dashpay#7728.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…sternode

CheckProUpServTx() verifies the operator signature against the masternode
list of the previous block, and block connection applies provider
transactions in block order without checking again who signed them. A
ProUpServTx signed with the operator key that an earlier transaction in the
same block changes or revokes still applies: it restores the previous
operator's service fields and, after a key change, revives the masternode
the change just PoSe-banned (dashpay#7582). The mempool accepts both transactions
together and block assembly orders them by feerate, so a displaced operator
can wait with a low-feerate service update for the key change to be mined.

Mined in the other order both transactions are fine: the key change resets
the operator fields the service update set. So instead of keeping either
transaction out of the mempool, block assembly now mines the masternode's
pending ProUpServTxs before the key change, together with their ancestors.
One that cannot be in the block now, that cannot reliably be put first (see
below), or whose package has a ProUpServTx of a masternode whose key already
changed in the block, is left out; once the key change is in the block, no
later package with a ProUpServTx of that masternode is taken, as whether one
passes the package checks can change while the template is built (the
ChainLock safety check depends on the clock). If those pulled in do not fit,
they are all left out and the key change goes in without them: the mempool
admits any number of independently funded service updates of a masternode,
so requiring them to fit would let the operator being replaced hold the key
change back indefinitely.

A ProUpServTx cannot reliably be put ahead of a key change if a pending
operator key change is among its ancestors, directly or through other
pending transactions, as it can only be mined after it (for its own
masternode it would restore the previous operator's service fields; for
another masternode that change would have to come first), or a pending
asset lock, asset unlock or MNHF signal, whose own checks in block assembly
could keep the update, and the key change with it, out of the block. The
mempool rejects such a ProUpServTx with "protx-dup"; it can only arrive
after the transaction it spends, so every node decides the same way. A
reorg can still return such an ancestor below a ProUpServTx already in the
pool, and package acceptance (regtest-only) checks package members against
the pool before adding any of them, so block assembly applies the same test
to what it pulls in.

Whether a transaction changes or revokes a masternode's operator key is
decided against the masternode list at the tip rather than the flag
recorded at admission, which goes stale when a reorg changes the key under
a transaction staying in the pool.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…of its masternode

- A ProUpServTx goes in before a key change or a revocation of its
  masternode although they pay more; a registrar update keeping the
  operator key is ordered by fee as usual; a ProUpServTx that cannot be
  mined does not hold the key change back.
- The mempool rejects a ProUpServTx spending an output of a pending key
  change, directly, through another transaction, or of a key change of
  another masternode, or an output of a pending asset lock, and accepts one
  independent of any of them.
- A key change returned to the mempool by InvalidateBlock still counts as
  the masternode's pending key change, so a second one is rejected, and
  still puts a pending ProUpServTx before it.
- A registrar update that kept the operator key when it entered the
  mempool, and became a key change when a reorg disconnected the block that
  set the key, still has a pending ProUpServTx placed before it.
- A ProUpServTx that follows a key change of its masternode in the pool is
  never mined after it; one following a registrar update that keeps the key
  still is.
- A reorg returning a zero-fee key change of another masternode below a
  pending ProUpServTx does not hold back a key change of the ProUpServTx's
  masternode; the ProUpServTx is left out of the block instead.
- A ProUpServTx funded by an ordinary pending transaction goes in with it,
  parent first, before the key change. With room in the block for either
  the two of them or the key change but not all three, the key change goes
  in without the ProUpServTx and the template stays within its size limit.
- Independently funded ProUpServTxs that fit ahead of a key change only one
  at a time do not hold it back; the key change goes in without them.
- A key change of masternode A that goes in without A's ProUpServTxs does
  not hold back a key change of masternode B through a ProUpServTx of B
  funded by one of A's; that ProUpServTx is left out instead.

CreateProUpServTx() and CreateProUpRevTx() take a fee, as CreateProUpRegTx()
already does, so the templates hold transactions with real fees.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Independently reviewed the complete diff at 7645a26 and found no actionable in-scope defects. Service-update pull-in preserves ancestry, falls back without withholding key changes when space is insufficient, and prevents later updates from following an included key change; two prior findings are fixed and two are withdrawn because their claimed omissions were already covered at the previously reviewed head. This was static verification only: the supplied CI snapshot shows successful completed builds, lint, and no-wallet tests, with TSAN, SQLite, and standard Linux tests plus multiprocess and ASAN builds still pending.

Reviewed 7645a26 and compared it with #7728, which fixes the same issue.

How this approach differs from #7728:

  • Neither changes consensus, and in both a block with the harmful order stays valid. Here, a service update the operator already broadcast is mined ahead of the key change, which then resets the fields the update set. fix: drop stale operator service updates around an operator key change #7728 refuses or evicts the update instead.
  • Key changes are classified against the tip list (GetKeyChangeTarget()), not the admission-time isKeyChangeProTx flag. fix: drop stale operator service updates around an operator key change #7728 relies on that flag, so it misses a registrar update that only becomes a key change after a reorg (the case test_miner_service_update_before_key_change_surviving_reorg covers).
  • Block validity: each pulled-in transaction still goes through TestPackageTransactions() (finality, IsTxSafeForMining, the CheckSpecialTx recheck) and the combined size and sigop check. An update comes in with its whole unconfirmed ancestor set, sorted ahead of the rest of the package. Updates that descend from the key change, or that have any key change among their ancestors, are never pulled in, so the template order stays topological. TestBlockValidity still checks the final template.

On the review threads:

  • Tip move in MaybeUpdateMempoolForReorg() (validation.cpp thread): I checked every caller. Each one runs under cs_main, after DisconnectTip()/ConnectTip() has already moved m_chain. CDeterministicMNManager::UpdatedBlockTip() only assigns tipIndex. If an exception is thrown later, tipIndex still equals m_chain.Tip(), and the SynchronousUpdatedBlockTip notification sets the same value afterwards. Switching the mempool to explicit GetListForBlock() calls would be a good follow-up, but correctness here does not depend on it.
  • Package bypass (CodeRabbit): answered in that thread. The gap is real, but no change is needed.

Follow-up commit, cherry-pickable onto this branch: PastaPastaPasta@104c4f6 (test: mine a pending service update before a shared masternode's key change).
No test covered the ProUpSharedRegTx branch of GetKeyChangeTarget(). This commit adds an ordering check to feature_masternode_shares.py, with the rotation prioritised above the service update. With src/node/miner.cpp reverted to develop it fails on the ordering check. At this head it passes.

Tested at 7645a26 plus that commit, on macOS arm64. All of these pass:

  • test_dash: evo_dip3_activation_tests, evo_sharedmn_tests, evo_assetlocks_tests, mempool_tests, miner_tests, txpackage_tests, validation_block_tests.
  • Functional: feature_masternode_shares.py, feature_dip3_deterministicmns.py --descriptors, feature_protx_version.py, mempool_packages.py, mempool_reorg.py, mining_basic.py, rpc_packages.py.

The branch also merges cleanly with develop c8bfd7a, #7638 and #7846.

…change

The unit tests cover ProUpRegTx and ProUpRevTx key changes, but not the
ProUpSharedRegTx branch of CTxMemPool::GetKeyChangeTarget(). Run the
ordering check for a shared masternode on a generated block: a
service update signed with the operator key that a pending shared
registrar update replaces is mined first, even when the rotation is
prioritised above it, and the masternode ends the block banned under the
new key.

Without the block assembly change the rotation is mined first and the
test fails on the ordering check.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Independently reviewed the complete diff at 64b828d and verified all four prior findings are fixed; no actionable in-scope defects remain. The implementation preserves ancestor ordering, lets key changes proceed without oversized service-update packages, and prevents later service updates from following their masternode's key change, including after reorgs. This was static verification only: the supplied CI snapshot shows lint passing, with platform build/test prerequisites, ClangFormat, and other checks still queued.

Pull request description:

  ## Issue being fixed or feature implemented

  Fixes dashpay#7582 at the block assembly level, as an alternative to dashpay#7728.

  `CheckProUpServTx()` verifies the operator signature against the masternode list of the previous block, and block connection applies provider transactions in block order without checking again who signed them. A `ProUpServTx` signed with the operator key that an earlier transaction in the same block changes (`ProUpRegTx` or `ProUpSharedRegTx` with a new operator key) or revokes (`ProUpRevTx`) therefore still applies: it writes the previous operator's service fields back and, after a key change, revives the masternode the change just PoSe-banned. The mempool accepts both transactions together, and block assembly orders them by feerate, so a displaced operator can broadcast a low-feerate service update and wait for the key change to be mined.

  The reverse order is harmless: the key change resets the operator fields the service update set. This PR makes honest block assembly always produce that order, instead of keeping the two transactions out of the mempool as dashpay#7728 does. Compared to dashpay#7728, no valid service update the operator already broadcast is evicted or refused for being paired with a key change, and mempool contents do not depend on the order in which a node received the two transactions. Consensus is unchanged: a block with the harmful order is still valid, so a miner ignoring this policy can still produce one, as with dashpay#7728.

  ## What was done?

  - **Block assembly** (`BlockAssembler::addPackageTxs`): when a package contains an operator key change or revocation, the masternode's pending `ProUpServTx`s, with their unconfirmed ancestors, are pulled into the package and placed before it. New helper `CTxMemPool::GetServiceUpdatesBeforeKeyChange()`.
    - A service update is left out if its own package fails the usual transaction checks, if it is one the mempool would refuse as unorderable (see below; the mempool rejects those on entry, but a reorg can return such ancestors below an update already in the pool), or if its package has a service update of a masternode whose key already changed in the block.
    - If the pulled-in updates do not fit, they are all left out and the key change goes in without them, so pending updates, however many, cannot hold it back.
    - Once a key change is in the template, no later `ProUpServTx` of that masternode is added, so an update left out, or one that only becomes eligible while the template is built, cannot follow it.
    - Whether a transaction is a key change is decided by `CTxMemPool::GetKeyChangeTarget()` against the current tip list, not when the transaction entered the mempool, so a registrar update that becomes a key change after a reorg is handled too.
  - **Mempool policy**: a `ProUpServTx` that block assembly could not reliably put ahead of a key change is rejected with `protx-dup` (`CTxMemPool::IsUnorderableServiceUpdate()`, called next to `existsProviderTxConflict()`):
    - **With a pending operator key change among its ancestors** (it spends one, directly or through other pending transactions). It can only be mined after that change. For its own masternode it would restore the previous operator's fields. For another masternode, pulling it in would require that other change.
    - **With a pending asset lock, asset unlock or MNHF signal among its ancestors.** Their own checks during block assembly could keep the pulled-in update, and the key change with it, out of the block.

    Such a transaction can only arrive after the ancestor it spends, so every node makes the same decision. Package acceptance checks package members against the pool before adding any of them, so a package carrying both transactions is not caught. Packages are regtest-only.
  - **Reorg**: `MaybeUpdateMempoolForReorg()` moves the deterministic masternode list tip to the new chain tip before re-adding disconnected transactions. Before, a key change returned to the mempool was compared with the list of the disconnected block, which already had the new key, and was not recognized as a key change. This change was first proposed in dashpay#7728 and is kept as its own commit.
  - Release note `doc/release-notes-7857.md`.

  This keeps pending provider transactions in the mempool and only changes their order in block templates, so it does not depend on how they were relayed.

  ## How Has This Been Tested?

  Built on macOS arm64 with `--enable-debug --enable-werror --enable-crash-hooks`.

  New unit tests in `src/test/evo_deterministicmns_tests.cpp`, using block templates unless noted:
  - `test_miner_service_update_before_key_change`:
    - a low-fee `ProUpServTx` is placed before a high-fee key change or revocation of its masternode;
    - a registrar update that keeps the operator key is ordered by fee as usual;
    - a `ProUpServTx` that cannot be mined (it takes another masternode's address) does not hold the key change back.
  - `test_mempool_rejects_unorderable_service_update`, through `ProcessTransaction`: a `ProUpServTx` is rejected with `protx-dup` when funded from a pending key change of its masternode, from a transaction spending one, from a pending key change of another masternode, or from a pending asset lock. An independently funded one is accepted.
  - `test_miner_service_update_before_reorged_key_change`: a key change returned to the mempool by `InvalidateBlock` still counts as the masternode's pending key change, so a second one is rejected with `protx-dup`, and a pending `ProUpServTx` is still placed before it.
  - `test_miner_service_update_before_key_change_surviving_reorg`: a registrar update that kept the operator key when it entered the mempool becomes a key change after a reorg, and a service update signed with the restored key still goes in before it.
  - `test_miner_service_update_never_after_key_change`: a `ProUpServTx` that follows a key change in the pool (it spends it) is never mined after it, while one following a registrar update that keeps the key still is.
  - `test_miner_key_change_not_held_back_after_reorg`: a reorg returns a zero-fee key change of another masternode below a pending `ProUpServTx`; the key change of the update's own masternode is mined and the update is left out.
  - `test_miner_service_update_with_parent_before_key_change`: a `ProUpServTx` funded by an ordinary pending transaction goes in as parent, service update, key change.
  - `test_miner_key_change_without_room_for_service_update`: with room for either the parent and the service update or the key change, but not all three, the key change goes in without the service update, and the template stays within its size limit.
  - `test_miner_key_change_not_held_back_by_service_updates`: two independently funded `ProUpServTx`s that fit ahead of a key change only one at a time; the key change goes in and neither update does.
  - `test_miner_key_change_not_held_back_by_other_key_change`: a key change of masternode A goes in without A's service updates; a service update of masternode B funded by one of them is left out instead of holding back B's key change.

  Reverting each piece in turn makes the corresponding case fail:
  - the pull-in in block assembly (both ordering tests);
  - the reorg tip move (only the reorg test);
  - limiting the rejection to the update's own masternode (the other-masternode case);
  - removing asset locks from the rejection (the asset-lock case);
  - leaving unorderable service updates in the pull-in (`test_miner_key_change_not_held_back_after_reorg`);
  - holding the key change back when the pulled-in updates do not fit (both block-space tests);
  - pulling in an update package with a service update of a masternode whose key already changed in the block (`test_miner_key_change_not_held_back_by_other_key_change`).

  Run at the head of this PR:
  - **Unit tests:** all pass (`test_dash`, 1071 cases).
  - **Functional tests:** all pass: `feature_asset_locks.py`, `feature_dip3_deterministicmns.py --descriptors`, `feature_llmq_chainlocks.py`, `feature_masternode_shares.py`, `feature_protx_version.py`, `mempool_packages.py`, `mempool_reorg.py`, `mining_basic.py`, `rpc_masternode.py`, `rpc_packages.py`.
  - **Lint:** `test/lint/all-lint.py` reports only an existing cppcheck warning in `src/governance/object.cpp`, which this PR does not touch.

  ## Breaking Changes

  None for consensus. Mempool policy: a `ProUpServTx` spending an output of a pending operator key change, asset lock, asset unlock or MNHF signal is rejected until that transaction confirms. It can then be sent again, signed with the operator key current at that point. Mining policy: pending service updates of a masternode that do not fit in the block ahead of its key change are left out of that block, and become invalid once the key change confirms.

  - #7893 fix(net): announce sporks to new peers instead of requesting them during mnsync
  - 4a19742 (from #7859) test: follow-up for #7821: check if wallet is locked after failed upgrade instead creating brand-new scenario. Test-only, picked as its commit. Without it, #7821's `test_failed_upgrade()` expects RPC error -1 for a 257-byte mnemonic passphrase, which #7842's new precheck rejects with -8 first, so `wallet_upgradetohd.py --legacy-wallet` fails. On develop, #7859 replaced that scenario before #7842 merged. The rest of #7859 is test cleanup and docs and is left out.
  - #7842 fix(wallet): reject mnemonic passphrases that seed derivation truncates
  - #7857 fix: mine a pending ProUpServTx before a key change of its masternode
  - #7846 fix: treat pending owner keys and Platform node IDs as one conflict namespace
  - #7895 test: cover retroactive provider tx refusal, fix wording
  - #7909 feat(mining): build the masternode list incrementally during block assembly
  - #7537 fix: data races and check-then-act races in the CoinJoin server
  - #7888 fix(consensus): canonical ExtNetInfo encoding and strict netInfo decoding

  34 of the 39 picks change exactly the same lines as their develop merges. #7888 and #7782 needed test-only changes (see testing), and three others needed adaptation, described in their commit messages:

  - **#7893** was merged to develop twice: f99212b with an earlier revision of its commit, then 72a5997 with the final one, so develop now announces sporks twice in the VERACK handler (a develop fix is open separately). Here the PR's final commit 45acdf3 is picked once instead of either merge. In `src/node/sync_manager.cpp`, this branch still sent `GETSPORKS` from the mnsync tick on every network, because #7847, which limited it to test chains, is not included. The request is removed entirely, as on develop. Mainnet spork values are hardcoded in `CSporkManager::GetSporkValue`, so the mainnet request had no effect.
  - **#7857** and **#7909**: develop folded `CChainstateHelper` into `Chainstate` (d5c1bd7), which is not on this branch, so the new code goes through `ChainHelper().special_tx` / `m_chain_helper.special_tx` instead of `m_special_tx`. The neighbouring develop-only `CSpecialTxProcessor::GetDeterministicMNListHash` is left out.

  #7888 tightens consensus rules for ExtAddr provider transactions behind V24, so I checked it against testnet. V24 is not active there yet (the tip's CbTx is still version 3), so the chain has no ExtAddr ProTxs the new rules could reject. rc.3's own serializer always writes canonical, sorted purposes, so every ProTx it builds passes the new rules. Mixed rc.3/rc.4 networks could only split on a hand-crafted non-canonical ExtAddr ProTx mined after V24 activates. So testnet miners and masternodes should move to rc.4 before V24 is signalled.

  Unlabeled develop fixes since rc.3 that were audited and left out:
  - Worth considering before the final release: #7869 (startup block replay after an unclean shutdown asserts on a quorum commitment, so recovery needs `-reindex-chainstate`; not a v24 regression), #7833 (gate signing intake before quorum retrieval, DoS hardening), #7682 (intermittent `relic_conf.h` parallel-build failure).
  - Left for 24.1: #7812, #7826, #7844, #7847, #7850, #7868, plus the routine upstream backports (#7780, #7806, #7830, #7855, #7856, #7862, #7863, #7865, #7883, #7884, #7898, #7906), refactors (#7805, #7878, #7880), and CI, docs and test-only changes.

  One CI-only commit comes last. It takes only the `ci/test` hunks of 6f71fa5 (#7901), which make `ci/test/00_setup_env_native_{multiprocess,tsan}.sh` honor `DEPENDS_ARCH`. Pull requests into `v24.0.x` run develop's workflow files (`pull_request_target`), and since #7901 those check the depends cache on x86_64 runners and pass the aarch64 build arch in `DEPENDS_ARCH`. Without the hunks, `linux64_multiprocess / Build depends` fails on any depends cache miss (`Build runner computes HOST=aarch64-linux-gnu but check-cache used x86_64-pc-linux-gnu`). Without `DEPENDS_ARCH` the scripts still use `uname -m`, so this branch's own push CI is unchanged.

  No version change is needed. `configure.ac` is already 24.0.0 with `CLIENT_VERSION_IS_RELEASE` false, so the build takes its version string from the `v24.0.0-rc.4` tag.

  ## How Has This Been Tested?

  Built and tested at 6c02b2b on macOS arm64 against depends, with `--enable-debug --enable-werror --disable-hardening`.

  - `make check`: all unit test suites pass, including `test_dash-qt`.
  - Functional tests, all passing: `feature_evo_shares_activation.py`, `feature_governance_objects.py`, `feature_llmq_signing.py` (plain and `--spork21`), `feature_masternode_shares.py`, `feature_sporks.py`, `interface_rest.py`, `p2p_instantsend.py`, `p2p_quorum_data.py`, `rpc_masternode.py`, `rpc_psbt.py`, `rpc_quorum.py`, `wallet_backup.py`, `wallet_dump.py`, `wallet_encryption.py`, `wallet_labels.py` and `wallet_upgradetohd.py`, each with `--descriptors` and `--legacy-wallet` where it supports them.

  - Each pick's changed lines were compared with its develop merge (or, for #7893, its PR commit). They are identical except for the #7893, #7857 and #7909 adaptations above, and the #7888 test adaptation below.
  - A local macOS arm64 debug build (`--enable-debug --enable-werror`) compiled most of the tree and stopped on a single error in `src/test/evo_netinfo_tests.cpp`. #7888's new test used `CNetAddr::V2()`, the serialization-parameter API from bitcoin#25284, which this branch lacks. The pick now writes that entry through an `OverrideStream` with `ADDRV2_FORMAT`, the way `NetInfoEntry::Serialize` does on this branch (see its commit message).
  - #7782's new unit test reloads the wallet with develop's three-argument `CWallet` constructor. On this branch the constructor still takes the CoinJoin loader and an `ArgsManager`, so the test passes them the way its fixture already does (see the commit message).
  - With both test fixes, a full local `make` (`dashd`, `dash-qt`, `test_dash`, `test_dash-qt`) completes with no errors.
  - `feature_pruning.py` is an extended test that CI does not run. #7894 is included because #7792 makes its restart path fail.

  ## Breaking Changes

  Carried over from the picked PRs:

  - #7876: rc.1 to rc.3 nodes that connected an affected block stored a wrong masternode list diff for it. Those nodes need `-reindex`; `-reindex-chainstate` is not enough for nodes that already marked the following block invalid.
  - #7888: stricter ExtAddr `netInfo` decoding and validation behind V24 (see above). The RFC1918 check now applies even with `-allowprivatenet`.
  - #7858: provider transactions no longer get InstantSend locks. Software that waits for an islock on a ProTx should wait for a ChainLock or confirmations instead.
  - #7857: a `ProUpServTx` spending an output of a pending operator key change, asset lock, asset unlock or MNHF signal is rejected from the mempool until that transaction confirms.
  - #7831: governance object signatures over 96 bytes are rejected, and the governance cache is discarded and re-synced on first start (`doc/release-notes-7831.md`).
  - #7871: address purposes are limited to `send`, `receive` and `refund`. Wallets with other purpose strings load with warnings, and `listlabels` errors on an unknown purpose (`doc/release-notes-27217.md`).
  - #7842: creating an HD wallet with a mnemonic passphrase over 248 bytes fails unless `-allow-deprecated-long-mnemonics` is set, and over 256 bytes always fails (`doc/release-notes-7842.md`).
  - #7792: a node whose evodb is missing a masternode list snapshot now stops at startup and asks for `-reindex`, and `evodb repair` reports it in `repairErrors`.
  - #7867: `protx info <proTxHash> <blockHash>`, `protx listdiff` and `masternode payments <blockHash>` return an error for blocks outside the active chain.
  - #7881: `protx shared_combine` on a `ProUpSharedRegTx` is refused unless its inputs are unlocked coins of a single address of the calling wallet, change returns to that address, and the fee is within `-maxtxfee`.
  - #7836: PSBTs referencing nonexistent previous outputs fail to deserialize (RPC error -22).
  - #7834: negative Electrum-import rescan indices are rejected.
  - #7893: on this branch, mainnet nodes no longer send `GETSPORKS` during mnsync (no effect, mainnet spork values are hardcoded).
