Summary

Adds the MoQ Epoch extension (drafts/draft-lcurley-moq-epoch.md), which carries moq-lite's broadcast epoch over moq-transport drafts 17 through 22 without changing a path. It is implemented in Rust (moq-net) and JS (@moq/net), and finishes the quest/m1/ietf-epochs.md quest.

  • Negotiation: SETUP option EPOCH (0x40B68). The extension is used only when both sides offer it, and it is on by default.
  • Parameter: EPOCH (0x40B69) holds the publisher's 16-byte UUIDv7. It appears on:
    • PUBLISH_NAMESPACE
    • NAMESPACE, inside the extended block shared with MoQ Cluster
    • SUBSCRIBE
    • FETCH (named-track FETCH only)
    • TRACK_STATUS
  • Advertising:
    • An epoch change is make-before-break, so the namespace never shows offline. On PUBLISH_NAMESPACE the new epoch is advertised first, and the old request is withdrawn only once the peer answers the new one, since the two streams are unordered. On a SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE stream, a NAMESPACE under the new epoch replaces the live one with no NAMESPACE_DONE.
    • Gaining or losing an epoch is still a withdraw then an advertise. So is any instance change toward a peer that did not negotiate MoQ Epoch, relays included, because a second advertisement would read as the same instance there.
    • An update never changes the instance: REQUEST_UPDATE carries no EPOCH.
    • The subscriber keeps the newest advertisement, so a stale withdrawal of an older one is ignored.
  • Requests:
    • Each request is pinned to the epoch it was routed by. A request for a different instance, or one missing its epoch, is refused as DOES_NOT_EXIST.
    • An EPOCH parameter on a session that did not negotiate the extension is a protocol violation.
    • A joining FETCH that carries EPOCH is InvalidValue.
  • Behavior change: IETF ingress now keeps the publisher's declared timescale instead of converting to microseconds. Without this, a subscription that resumes across a mix of lite and IETF routes was refused by the model's track-Info check. The passthrough test was renamed to match.
  • Docs and drafts: the cluster draft now says the NAMESPACE block is appended when any extension that uses it is negotiated, and that only same-EPOCH advertisements are redundant. The concept, relay, CLI and GStreamer docs now name moq-transport 17+ as an epoch carrier. The moq-lite and stats concept pages and the upgrade notes describe the make-before-break restart.
  • Regression tests for make-before-break: these use mocked time and fail without the change.
    • restart::dynamic_epoch_ietf{19,22} runs P to R to V over SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE. V now sees a single restart between two epochs, with no end in between.
    • The Rust unit test another_epoch_is_advertised_before_the_old_is_withdrawn checks the PUBLISH_NAMESPACE path. The new request goes out before the old one is cancelled, and a non-negotiated peer still sees the cancel first.
    • The JS publisher and subscriber tests cover both paths and the add-or-drop violation.

Overlap with #5678 (claim-answer-epochs): there is no duplicated feature, since that PR consumes these epochs. The two PRs will likely conflict textually in rs/moq-net/src/ietf/{publisher,subscriber}.rs.

Public API

  • Rust: moq_net::setup::Extensions gains epoch: bool, defaulting to true. The struct is #[non_exhaustive], so the addition is not breaking.
  • JS: Extensions gains epoch?: boolean, defaulting to true.
  • No MIGRATE entry is needed.

Wire

  • This is an opt-in extension on drafts 17 and later.
  • Unnegotiated sessions, drafts 14 to 16 and moq-lite are byte-for-byte unchanged.
  • Paths are never rewritten.

Decisions

The maintainer settled these.

  1. Code points 0x40B68 and 0x40B69. These sit next to the other lcurley extension points, with an even setup option and an odd parameter. ✅ Keep.
  2. Draft name draft-lcurley-moq-epoch. This is a separate extension draft rather than a section of moq-cluster, so that a non-cluster peer can implement it on its own. ✅ Keep.
  3. An epoch change is make-before-break. ✅ Changed from withdraw-then-advertise. Replacing the instance behind an advertisement must not show an offline gap, as described under Advertising. There is still no EPOCH in REQUEST_UPDATE.
  4. A repeated NAMESPACE with a different epoch. ✅ Kept, but relaxed per 3. It is now a protocol violation only when the repeat adds or drops an EPOCH.
  5. EPOCH on a non-negotiated request is a protocol violation. This is supported or refused, with no silent ignore. ✅ Keep.
  6. Preserve the declared timescale at IETF ingress. This is needed for seamless resume across mixed chains. ✅ Keep.

Follow-ups

  • Draft-16 epochless replacement does not refuse a pending catalog or a retired handle. This already happens on main. The draft-16 cases were left out of the new replacement tests.
  • JS should refuse cluster parameters on non-negotiated sessions, to match Rust.
  • JS does not serve FETCH yet, so the FETCH epoch pin exists only in Rust.
  • Add an IETF epoch lane to the cross-language interop matrix.
  • Publish the epoch draft, then cite {{epoch}} from the cluster draft.

Checks

  • moq-net lib and integration tests
  • just rs check-test-changed
  • js/net bun test
  • just drafts check
  • doc check
  • markdown check
  • just test interop --all
  • quest check
  • just check

No benchmark was added. No fanout path changed, and the per-path advert list holds the routes for one path.

Adds the MoQ Epoch extension (draft-lcurley-moq-epoch): a SETUP option and an EPOCH parameter on PUBLISH_NAMESPACE, NAMESPACE, SUBSCRIBE, FETCH, and TRACK_STATUS, negotiated on drafts 17-22 in Rust and JS. Paths are unchanged and epochless peers keep their wire.

Quest outcome for quest/m1/ietf-epochs.md: implemented in Rust and JS, with the new draft-lcurley-moq-epoch draft. The quest file is deleted in this PR, and its references now point to the draft.

This PR stays a draft until the maintainer confirms the six open decisions in the description. Each one is implemented as recommended.

An epoch change no longer shows the namespace offline. On PUBLISH_NAMESPACE the new
epoch is advertised, and the old request withdrawn only once the peer answers it; on
a SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE stream a NAMESPACE under another epoch replaces the live one with
no NAMESPACE_DONE. Gaining or losing an epoch, and any change toward a peer without
MoQ Epoch, still withdraws first. A NAMESPACE repeat is a protocol violation only when
it adds or drops an EPOCH.

Recording the maintainer's answers to the six decisions:

  1. Code points 0x40B68/0x40B69: keep.
  2. Standalone draft-lcurley-moq-epoch: keep.
  3. Changed. An epoch change is now make-before-break, so replacing the instance behind an advertisement never shows an offline gap.
    • On PUBLISH_NAMESPACE, the new epoch is advertised first. The old request is withdrawn only after the peer answers the new one, because the two streams are unordered.
    • On a SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE stream, a NAMESPACE with the new EPOCH replaces the live suffix directly, with no NAMESPACE_DONE.
    • REQUEST_UPDATE still carries no EPOCH.
    • Peers that did not negotiate the extension, relays forwarding to them included, still get a withdraw before the re-advertise. A second advertisement would read as the same instance there, so the base protocol has no make-before-break that keeps the restart visible.
  4. A repeated NAMESPACE with a different epoch: kept, but relaxed per 3. It is a protocol violation only when the repeat adds or drops an EPOCH.
  5. EPOCH on a non-negotiated request is a protocol violation: keep.
  6. IETF ingress keeps the declared timescale: keep.

The draft's Advertising and downgrade sections were updated to match, and the change is implemented in Rust and JS for both sending and receiving. Mocked-time regression tests fail without it: restart::dynamic_epoch_ietf{19,22}, Rust another_epoch_is_advertised_before_the_old_is_withdrawn, and the JS publisher and subscriber epoch tests.

Walkthrough

The change adds MoQ Epoch support to JavaScript and Rust MoQ Transport implementations. Supported sessions negotiate the extension and carry UUIDv7 epochs in namespace advertisements and selected requests. Publishers resolve requests against the specified instance. Subscribers track multiple advertisements per namespace and propagate the selected epoch. The change also updates compatibility tests, protocol documentation, configuration examples, and links to the Epoch draft.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3c805

The epoch extension behaves as described in most paths. One narrow case remains: a subscription pinned to a stale publisher instance that also asks to wait for the publisher gets a "timeout" refusal instead of "does not exist". That can invite pointless retries. The fix is small, so the change is mergeable with these follow-ups.

A namespace advertised both inline and by a later PUBLISH_NAMESPACE kept routing to
the request's old instance when the inline NAMESPACE repeated under a new epoch,
since the repeat updated the older entry in place. It now moves to the tail, while a
same-instance repeat still re-prices in place. JS also skips a closed announce
consumer when the newest advertisement changes, as the end path already did.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A NAMESPACE that loops back through us detaches its route but stays advertised until
its NAMESPACE_DONE, so a later repeat that gains or loses an EPOCH is still refused.
The stream now tracks each suffix's epoch apart from its attached route. The epoch
draft gains its moq-epoch-00 changelog.

An instance never comes back, so RENDEZVOUS_TIMEOUT on a request pinned

TIMEOUT.
