…session end calls Drop received-group withholding: every group joins arrival order when created, and the model's judgments (live edge, successor, rejoin wait, newest, idle) count a group only once its first frame opens or it finishes. receive_group, reveal_group, and is_started go; the lite subscriber uses create_group. Publish group::Producer::info, track::Producer::received and close, and fold abort_session into abort, which now aborts open groups too. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…o the origin handle group::Producer::create_frame now consumes the writer and returns an owned frame::Producer whose finish hands it back; a refused frame aborts the group. The borrowing writer and ProducerOwned go. The allocation budget leaves the call signature: it rides the origin handle into each broadcast's tracks, and built-in sessions give their handle their own. hang and moq-mux write whole frames through write_frame. A received copy's `finish_at` now holds readers at a hole below the end for the subscription's grace, timed by the model over its own arrival record, so a custom subscriber declares a peer's end with the public `finish_at`. Drops count as accounted, and a feed still delivering keeps the gap above its last arrival open. `finish_at_pending` and `set_tail_pending` are gone (folded into `finish_at`, which now accepts a repeated or refined end), `demand_arrivals` folds into the start declaration, `drop_groups` is public, and the ledger moves out of the model. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`track::Request::request_start(floor)` replaces the crate-private `resolving_start`: the accepted track's start stays pending at the requested floor until `Producer::start_at` resolves it, set before any reader sees the track. `Producer::request_start` stays private for a held copy's next subscription (capability gap). The IETF subscriber accepts a TRACK_STATUS copy idle in the same step, so no reader takes it as live in between, and reports the answer's Largest before resolving the start. Unit tests for close dropping an unpulled open group, abort ending a pulled open group and failing its writer, a received copy skipping the rewind check, group::Producer::info, an open frame reading its group, and poll_past waking a real waiter on a later group's first frame. Formats this PR's own test code and moves a misplaced doc comment back onto poll_recv_group. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

`track::Request::stage(info)` mints the producer while waiting subscribers stay pending; `Staged::commit` publishes it with everything written, and dropping it uncommitted rejects the request. `accept(info)` is `stage(info).commit()`. A relay replaying retained groups stages them, so SUBSCRIBE_OK's Largest Location, which the IETF publisher snapshots once the subscribe resolves, always names them (#5862, with a multi-thread regression test that fails on accept-then-replay). The IETF subscriber stages its copy until the answer's Largest and start are in. @moq/net mirrors it (`Request.stage`, `Staged.producer`, `commit`, disposal rejects). WalkthroughThe change adds staged track publication in Rust and JavaScript. Track state now distinguishes group arrival from content start, and received-track completion uses arrival tracking and grace deadlines. Frame producers now own their group writers and use shared allocation budgets. Subscriber paths and call sites use the revised track, group, and frame APIs. Abort open fetched heads with the track error
When a live slot has an in-progress fetched head in Slot::head, this snapshots only the primary slot.group. commit_abort then removes the slot, but the external head producer remains open, so a concurrent fetch reader can hang and later receive Error::Dropped instead of the track's abort reason. Snapshot and abort every unfinished copy in the slot, including the fetched head.

Restart the tail timer when resolving the start
When finish_at has already started a received track's tail grace, a later start_at only calls arrivals.demand. With no arrivals, or for the gap above the last arrival, that call cannot retimestamp anything, while tail_deadline continues using the older self.tail instant. Consequently, if a pending start resolves near the original deadline, readers can end almost immediately and skip group streams that the newly declared start says are still coming. Refresh the active tail timestamp when resolving or changing the start so every newly requested gap receives the promised full grace.

Agreed, fixed in 2f3d97f: set_start now refreshes an active tail along with arrivals.demand, so a start declared after the end gives the gap above the last arrival a full grace from the start. Regression test a_late_start_restarts_the_tail_grace fails without the fix. JS has no timed tail (its #owes only checks coverage), so there is nothing to mirror.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
A start declared after a received copy's end asks the feed for groups it may only now send. The gaps between arrivals already got a fresh grace, but the gap above the last arrival kept the end's timestamp, so a start resolved late in the grace ended readers almost at once. Abort staged groups when rejecting the request
When a caller creates a group or frame through Staged and its writer remains in another task, dropping the stage only calls commit_abort, which removes the cached slot without aborting that external group handle. The track request rejects, but a direct group consumer can remain pending and the retained writer can continue accepting payload after the track is dead; this teardown should snapshot and abort unfinished child groups as Producer::abort does.

Agreed, fixed in 6e1d58f: Staged's drop now goes through Producer::abort, which unlists, commits the abort, and aborts every unfinished group, so a writer held elsewhere fails with Dropped. Regression test dropping_a_staged_track_aborts_its_open_groups fails without the fix. JS Staged already disposes through Producer.close(err), which closes every cached group.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
Staged's drop only committed the abort to the track state, so a group created through it kept accepting frames after the request was rejected. Drop through Producer::abort instead, which also aborts unfinished groups, matching the JS Staged dispose. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Abort retained group writers when closing a track
When a caller retains a group::Producer returned by append_group and then calls this newly public close, drop_open_groups only removes the cached handle; it does not abort the retained writer. That writer can continue accepting frames, and a consumer that already pulled the group can remain pending indefinitely even though the track is closed and the method promises to drop open groups. Snapshot and abort every unfinished group copy with SessionClosed, as the abort path does.

Fixed in d109dfd at the root. The shared teardown (TrackState::tear_down, used by commit_abort) now returns every unfinished group copy, fetched heads included, and each path aborts them once the track lock is released: close (with SessionClosed), abort, abort_unused, Request::reject_unused, the crate-internal abort, and the last producer dropping unfinished (with Dropped). Producer::abort collapses into it. Regression tests on a pulled open group for close, abort_unused, and the unfinished drop each fail without the fix. JS already closes every cached group on close, so it has no gap.

While a received copy's start is pending, its declared end waited the full grace even with nothing missing below it: an end at group 0, or one whose groups all arrived or were dropped. Reject commits after a staged track was disposed
When Symbol.dispose has already rejected the staged request, it sets #done and closes the producer, but this method ignores that state. A retained Staged can therefore be disposed and then commit() can return successfully because Producer.accept() silently returns when closed, even though all waiting subscribers were already rejected. Check #done before accepting so this terminal handle cannot report a successful publication after rejection.

Valid, fixed in 8768d8e: commit() on a committed or disposed Staged now throws instead of reporting success, matching Rust's consuming commit(self). Test: a disposed staged track refuses a later commit in js/net/src/broadcast.test.ts (fails without the fix).
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
A disposed `Staged` has already rejected its subscribers, but `commit()` called `Producer.accept`, which returns silently on a closed producer, so it reported a successful publication. Reject commits after the staged producer closes
When code closes staged.producer directly, or retains the Request and calls reject() after staging, #done remains false even though subscribers have already been rejected. Producer.accept() silently returns when its terminal state is set, so this commit() still reports successful publication; check producer.closed.peek() before accepting.
AGENTS.md reference: js/AGENTS.md:L19-L21
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Declining. A track closed under a request is tolerated by design, the same as in Rust: track::Request::stage takes an already-closed state and hands back a producer that "simply can't write", and Staged::commit is infallible. Request.accept() is stage().commit(), so a closed check in commit() would also make accept() throw whenever the request was rejected first, for example by BroadcastProducer.close() rejecting every pending request while the app still holds one from requested(). That turns a benign race into an exception every caller has to catch. The returned producer reports closed, so nothing claims a live publication. Disposal differs because it is the Staged's own terminal state, the JS counterpart of Rust's consumed handle. reject() after stage() is a misuse that Rust's by-value stage(self) rules out and JS can't, and it still ends with a closed producer rather than a false success.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Abort the group with WrongSize before the short-frame early return.
If finish runs on a frame that has fewer bytes than its declared size, it returns Err(Error::WrongSize) before it sets self.done. Producer::drop then runs with done == false. The drop handler logs the "dropped before writing all bytes" warning and calls frame_abort(Error::Dropped). The caller gets WrongSize, but every group consumer sees Error::Dropped. The real cause is lost, and the group writer is gone, so the caller cannot abort with a better reason afterwards.
This is reachable through the public API: a caller declares size: 10, writes 5 bytes, and calls finish().
The repository guideline names this exact case as a bug: "A track, group, or frame consumer seeing Error::Dropped is a bug too: its producer went away unfinished without calling abort with a specific error, so find that path and abort with the real cause." As per coding guidelines (rs/**/*.rs, Producer / Consumer).

Also answers review: a fetch of u64::MAX fails at once rather than parking on a handler no fill can ask, Subscription::start builds without `async`, and the MIGRATE guides no longer call GroupDemand or group::Request unchanged. Problem
Public ingest (the quest this PR completes and deletes): a custom subscriber must write what it receives into a track through public moq-net / @moq/net calls only, and the built-in lite and IETF subscribers should use the same calls. Closes moq-dev/moq#5862.
Approach
shows),newest/largest, andset_idle.receive_group,reveal_group, andis_startedare gone, and the lite subscriber usescreate_group.poll_pastfixed: a frameless group header past the answer no longer counts.track::Producer::closeis public.abort_sessionis folded intoabort. Every teardown (abort,abort_unused,close, the crate-internal aborts, and the last producer dropping unfinished) shares one step that drops the open groups from the cache and returns their handles, aborted once the track lock is released, so a writer the caller holds fails and a reader that already pulled the group ends (SessionClosedforclose,Droppedfor the drop, the abort's error otherwise). JS already closes every cached group onclose, so it needs no mirror.group::Producer::create_frame(self, info) -> Result<frame::Producer>. A refused frame aborts the group.frame::Producer::finish(self) -> Result<group::Producer>hands the writer back, andframe.group()gives read access. The borrowing writer andProducerOwnedare gone. hang and moq-mux write whole frames throughwrite_frame(no extra copy).with_own_frames,// private: tuning). Always-lazy growth measured 1.5-2.7x slower inframe_recv, so the budget stays.finish_aton areceived()copy. The model holds readers at a hole below the end until the grace (subscription max delay, or one second) passes on the pool's wall clock, over its own arrival record.drop_groups(now public) counts as accounted, and a feed still delivering keeps the gap above its latest arrival open.finish_ataccepts a repeated end or a refinement within the last group; any other second end is aProtocolViolation.finish_at_pendingandset_tail_pendingare gone,demand_arrivalsfolds into the start declaration, and the ledger moves tors/moq-net/src/ledger.rs(session plumbing, outsidemodel/).track::Request::request_start(floor)replacesresolving_start, applied atomically withaccept; the start stays pending untilProducer::start_at. The IETF TRACK_STATUS copy is accepted idle in the same step (crate-privateRequest::idle()), fixing theaccept→set_idlerace, and the IETF subscriber reports the answer's Largest before resolving the start.track::Request::stage(info) -> track::Stagedmints the producer while waiting subscribers stay pending.Stagedis#[must_use]and derefs to theProducer;commit(self) -> Producerresolves the subscribers with everything written, and dropping it uncommitted rejects the request withError::Dropped.accept(info)isstage(info).commit(). A relay replaying retained groups stages them, so the Largest Location the IETF publisher snapshots once the subscribe resolves always names them. The IETF subscriber stages its copy until the answer's Largest and start are written in. Every other path, lite-fed copies included, keeps answering SUBSCRIBE_OK and TRACK_STATUS from the cache at once.dropGroups(start, end, error)replaceshooks.dropTrackGroups.hooks.receiveTrackis gone with main's moq-dev/moq#6150, so JS exposes noreceived()(an accepted asymmetry, below). The IETF subscriber holds the request's demand until SUBSCRIBE_OK and stages there, committing once Largest and start are in, sohooks.pendingTrackProducergoes (group streams already wait on the alias).Track.Request.stage()andTrack.Stagedmirror the Rust staged accept.#successorskips frameless groups like Rust (new internalhooks.groupStarted).Impact (public API, no wire change)
group::Producer::create_frame(&mut self) -> frame::Producer<'_>;finish_at_pending,set_tail_pending,demand_arrivals,resolving_start(all were crate-private).create_frame(self)returns an ownedframe::Producer;frame::Producer::finishreturnsgroup::Producer;frame::Producer::group()returns&group::Producer.track::Producer::{abort, abort_unused}and dropping the last producer unfinished abort open groups, fetched heads included.finish_aton a received copy waits out the grace below the end, and tolerates a repeated end.track::Producer::{close, received},track::Producer::drop_groups(range, StreamError),group::Producer::info,track::Request::{request_start, stage},track::Staged.Track.Producer.dropGroups(start, end, error),Track.Request.stage(),Track.Staged(producer,commit(),[Symbol.dispose]()rejects). JS changed: a frameless group is not a successor.hang::container::Frame::write_tokeeps its signature. MIGRATE.md entries added for moq-net and @moq/net.API asymmetry:
received()(decided)Rust
track::Producer::received()stays public, but JS has noTrack.Producer.received(). Main's moq-dev/moq#6150 moved the rewind-check skip, which was the only thing JSreceived()did, totrack::Info::unchecked(JSInfo.unchecked, both private). In Rust,received()still marks a copy whose declaredfinish_atwaits out the in-flight tail; JS runs that tail only from the session's internalhooks.endTrack.The maintainer accepted the asymmetry: Rust keeps
received()public for the tail wait, and JS gains an equivalent when the model goes public (quest/m1/public-model/deferred.md, wherehooks.endTrackbecomes public).Decisions
poll_liveon a pending start: no new API, but an IETF SUBSCRIBE_OK for an empty lite-06 track waits for its first group.Producer::set_live: a runtime flag the caller must remember to flip.report_largest(Option<Position>)that SUBSCRIBE_OK waits on: it fixes a relay whose upstream Largest group has not arrived yet, but makes the relay wait on a peer. A lite-fed copy learns its largest only with its first group, so a quiet track would hit the JS IETF subscriber's 10 s request deadline.Request::producer(info)plus an info-lessaccept(): aRequestcannot write before it knows itsInfo(every write checks the timescale, and groups copy the info), so this needs the same info-then-commit step asstage, breaks everyacceptcaller, and loses drop-rejects.accepttaking the initial content: breaks every caller, adopts groups from another track, and cannot carry a group still being written.cancel_on_dropstays private;group::ProducerkeepsDeref<Target = Info>next toinfo().Checks
