WalkthroughRelative subscription starts now resolve from groups produced by a readable live feed, rather than from cached groups produced before the feed became live. The track records the live anchor when the feed becomes readable and keeps range resolution pending when the feed or route answer has not caught up. Tests cover idle producers and delayed or incomplete answers. The quest documentation now describes private passthrough markers for publishers’ live-edge reads. - Line 977: Update latest_live and first_live to expose relative-start positions
only after the live feed is available or the feed has reached a terminal state;
do not use readable() for this check, and leave readable() unchanged for
ordinary cache reads.
- Line 989: Update latest_live() so it selects the newest shown live group
rather than a pending group, while preserving the live_floor constraint; keep
the first_live assignment in go_live() anchored to that result.

The live feed's first group and answered edge, and the idle copy's newest group, now live in the Feed variant that set them, so a later feed state cannot read an ended feed's answer. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Merged main (0ccf3eb) to clear the conflict in Main dropped the Checks: (Written by Claude Opus 5.5) |
For A reader can tell when its track is live. Once the bug below is fixed, no public live signal is needed, so this PR finishes the quest and deletes it.
Problem
The quest says a player needs a live signal to skip the old cached groups a warm relay copy serves while it waits on a fresh upstream subscription. I checked what a reader actually gets from an idle copy:
readable()gate (moq-dev/moq#4741) holds every cache read until the route answers and the answer shows.max_delay, as a cold relay would get them from upstream.Range::live(), resolved against the newest group the ended feed left. In a copy holding 0..=3 whose route answers at 4, aRange::live()reader got[3, 4], not[4]. That stale group is what the quest wanted callers to skip by hand.Fix
Relative anchors count back from the newest group the live feed produced,
Nonewhile the copy is not live. A start taken while idle waits, as one on an empty track does, and settles against the newest group when the feed goes live. That group is at or past the route's answer, and never below a cache the route disowned (live_floor).TrackState::latest_live()replaces the rawnewest_producedwherever a window resolves.Feedvariant:Live { first, edge },Idle { newest }(wasidle_newest),Answered { from }.first_producedbecomesLive'sfirst, set when the feed goes live, so leaving a feed drops what it set and a later state cannot read an ended feed's answer (raised in review).Feed::AnsweredtoLivegoes throughgo_live().readable()counts an end only once it is reached (is_complete()), not merely declared. Before, an idle copy that had announced a future end served its stale cache, and anchored relative starts on it, before the route answered. That case was raised in review.set_liverecords the group the route answered (Live'sedge). Relative starts count back from the newer of it and the newest produced group, because a datagram can show the answer before any group does (raised in review).latest_live()unless the feed went live, so a copy that ends without going live anchors at its newest group (raised in review). So
Range::live()is the "start at the live edge" mode on a warm copy too, andlargest()already waits out an idle copy (moq-dev/moq#5924). A player needs neither a signal nor a hand-skip.Public API and wire impact
Subscriber::floor()staysNoneuntil then. TheAnchorandfloordocs say so. Not breaking, so noMIGRATE.mdentry.Range.livewas already right there.Decisions
Settled 2026-10-22: the user, away, asked to proceed with every recommendation.
Range::live()now starts at the live edge, andlargest()waits for live, so a signal would be redundant. Rejected:live()/poll_live() -> Poll<()>plusis_live()ontrack::Subscriberandtrack::Ordered. Only a "waiting for upstream" UI would use it, and in JS it is a constant.poll_live() -> Poll<Option<Position>>reporting the buffered edge. It gives readers two "largest" values that disagree.poll_live,latest_sequence, and JSwire.tsBroadcast.largest,hooks.latestSequence,hooks.bufferedLargeststay private asprivate: passthrough. The buffered edge is a wire-answer detail (SUBSCRIBE_OK, TRACK_STATUS Largest), and a custom publisher answers withlargest(). Main has since dropped thepending:/private:markers and their lint (moq-dev/moq#6581), so no marker work remains and the quest is deleted rather than rewritten. Rejected: folding them into a public signal, and moving the publishers ontolargest()now (a follow-up below).Range::oldest()and bufferingRelative(n)readers keep the cached groups theirmax_delayholds, as a cold relay would. Rejected: withholding every cached group below the route's answer, which breaks warm-equals-cold, and a "start at the live edge" flag, which is redundant withRange::live().Consumers
Any relative start served by a relay copy. That covers a relay serving a downstream
Range::live()orRelative(n)subscription,moq-c's relative anchors (MOQ_ANCHOR_RELATIVE, and through it the bindings), and its raw reader's live start.Tests
model::track:a_relative_start_on_an_idle_copy_counts_from_the_live_feed:Range::live()gets[4]andRelative(1)gets[3, 4], andfloor()isNonewhile idle. Fails on main withfloor() == Some(3).a_relative_start_on_an_idle_copy_waits_for_the_answer_to_show: a group the route resends below its answer does not anchor the start. Fails on main with[4, 5].a_relative_start_on_an_idle_copy_skips_a_cache_the_route_disowns: after an empty answer, the start resolves at the first new group, andfloor()never names a disowned group. It fails without thelive_floorfilter inlatest_live.an_idle_copy_with_a_future_end_waits_for_the_live_feed: an idle copy with a declared, unreached end serves nothing to aRange::live()or oldest reader until the route answers. On the previous head, theRange::live()reader got[3]while idle.a_relative_start_on_an_idle_copy_counts_from_a_datagram_edge: a resumed feed whose first event is datagram 4 anchorsRange::live()at 4, not at cached group 3.a_relative_start_on_an_idle_copy_that_ends_counts_from_its_newest_group: an idle copy that finishes without going live serves a waitingRange::live()reader[3], not[0, 1, 2, 3].an_idle_copy_that_ends_forgets_an_earlier_datagram_edge: a copy a datagram put live at 4 that idles and then finishes serves a waitingRange::live()reader[3], not[].Review status
Every review finding is addressed or answered in its thread. After Codex's fourth round, the maintainer chose to fold each feed's anchors into the
Feedvariants (df61b64) rather than reset them by hand. No decisions remain open.just checkandquest checkpass. Not run:just test interop --all, since there is no wire ormoq-ffichange.Follow-ups
largest()and then raise their floor. They can subscribe withRange::live()directly now.largest(). This follows the relay rule (report upstream state, not the cache). Butlargest()can name a frame the hop does not hold yet, and the IETF Largest Object semantics need checking first.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
