feat(lite): drop lite-05/06 timestamps so receivers check received groups - #6150
Conversation
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…racks lite-07 TRACK_INFO gains `Unverified (8)`. A timed track received over lite-05/06 or moq-transport is unverified, and relays preserve the mark, so the rewind check runs on received groups only where every hop could vouch for them. Replaces the session-level received mark in Rust and js/net, and completes quest/m1/lite-time-provenance. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A receiver drops every timestamp it gets over moq-lite-05/06, whose send times look like media time, so those tracks arrive and are forwarded untimed. The lite-07 TRACK_INFO Unverified byte is gone. Timed tracks received over moq-transport stay unchecked and are served to moq-lite untimed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Tests that read timestamps back over lite-05/06 now expect them dropped, or move to lite-07 where the timestamps are the point. The test relay also accepts lite-07 for a client that opts in. TrackInfo::serve replaces the From conversion now that compression depends on the version. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Normalize listed metadata for legacy lite versions
When a lite-05/06 peer sends a timed TRACKS entry, info.into() preserves its wire timescale, even though the subscription path now clears that timescale and drops every received timestamp for those versions. Consequently, discovery reports the track as timed while resolving the same track reports it as untimed, and a relay can forward incorrect timed metadata in its own listing. Apply the same has_media_time() normalization before adding the entry to the lister.

Not reachable: TRACKS is lite-07 only (Version::has_tracks() is false for Lite01 to Lite06), so a lite-05/06 peer can never send a TRACKS entry and every listed info here comes from a lite-07 session, whose timestamps are kept.

Include timestamp provenance in route compatibility
When a same-epoch track is first resolved through a checked lite-07 route and later fails over to a timed moq-transport route, the new unchecked value differs but the compatibility checks in model/front.rs and js/net/src/resume.ts ignore it. The logical track therefore retains unchecked = false, allowing timestamps that may be moq-transport arrival times to be advertised to a lite peer as media time, defeating the safety rule introduced here. Treat differing provenance as incompatible or conservatively retain unchecked = true across the splice in both implementations.

Declining. Keeping the first route's unchecked = false across the splice fails safe, not open:
- A spliced track that stays checked refuses any group from the moq-transport route that rewinds. A rewind is the only thing
uncheckedexists to tolerate. - Being checked guarantees the same thing it does for any lite-07 track: no rewinds. A hostile lite-07 peer can already send forward-moving timestamps that aren't media time, so this doesn't open a new hole.
- Same-epoch splices only happen between epoch-carrying routes, meaning lite-07 or moq-transport with the unreleased epoch extension. Those come from upgraded nodes, which never stamp arrival times. The arrival-stamping peers that
uncheckedguards against can't produce a same-epoch route at all.
The alternatives each have a cost:
- Refusing the splice on a provenance mismatch would break failover between lite-07 and moq-transport routes to the same instance.
- Flipping the track to
uncheckedmid-life can't take back the timed TRACK_INFO already served to lite peers.
The real fix is provenance that travels with the track, which moq-dev/moq#6107 adds. It is listed as the follow-up in the description.

WalkthroughThe changes distinguish media timestamps from send-time timestamps across moq-lite versions. Lite-05/06 receivers discard received timestamps and expose tracks as untimed. Lite-07 retains media timestamps and checks group ordering. Timed tracks marked unchecked bypass timestamp-order validation and are served over moq-lite without a timescale. Publisher serialization, relay behavior, tests, and documentation are updated to reflect these rules. Priority: ➖ Normal Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to

Resolves the overlap in the lite subscriber tests, the moq-lite draft, and the uniffi ladder case: lite-05/06 drop received timestamps but still refuse one past 2^61 - 1. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Combine lite-05/06 timestamp dropping (#6150) with compressed frame decoding: frameDecoder and readFrames take one FrameFormat of scale, timed, and compress, and the publisher threads both the Stamp and the compress flag. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…/ingest Main (#6150) replaced the rewind skip on received copies with track::Info::unchecked. Rust track::Producer::received keeps only its role here, the declared end waiting out an in-flight tail, so the lite and IETF subscribers still call it. The JS received() only skipped the rewind check, so it goes. Info::unchecked stays private as passthrough. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The probe polls moq_client_failure while a dial to a closed port retries, and MIGRATE.md maps the hand-written moq_session_failure to it. The probe also expects an untimed frame, since #6150 drops received moq-lite-06 timestamps. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Completes quest/m1/lite-time-provenance, deleted here. A track received over moq-lite now has checkable timestamps, so the rewind check from moq-dev/moq#5803 also runs on received groups.
Per the maintainer's decision, there is no wire flag. Instead, a receiver drops every timestamp it receives over moq-lite-05/06.
What changed
lite::Framing::new(info, version)(from moq-dev/moq#6107'sFraming) reads the wire timescale, so a track accepted untimed on lite-05/06 still reads past each frame's timestamp.TimestampMismatch, the same as a local write.
