Cut before appending a partial later group
When a non-first group begins at a nonzero frame index, which is valid for groups created with a start offset or whose earlier frames are unavailable, this appends it to the existing object even though Object stores frame_start only for its first entry. Object::end consequently treats this later group as starting at zero, so a restarted producer resumes at frames.len() rather than index + frames.len(), potentially duplicating frames and corrupting the archived position. Close the current object before appending such a group, or encode a frame start for every group entry.

Fixed in 6c48d17. It was worse than described: the producer read such a group from frame 0, lagged, and stored none of it. It now clamps to the group's first frame and cuts before any group entry that starts past frame 0, since only an object's first entry carries a frame start. Regression test: a_partial_group_resumes_after_its_last_stored_frame.

Request the selected path behind covering announcements
When --broadcast names live/a but the source advertises the valid covering route live, Consumer::announced() yields the route prefix live, not an inventory entry for live/a; this predicate rejects the event and the exporter never requests the selected broadcast. This regresses the previous exact-broadcast export for services that announce a namespace rather than every broadcast, leaving the process running without recording anything. The explicitly selected path must still be requested when a covering announcement appears.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 6c48d17: a Start or Restart whose route covers --broadcast now requests --broadcast itself, under that route's epoch. Regression test: a_covering_route_is_asked_for_the_selected_path, and doc/bin/cli.md says so.

Correction: reverted in 47c801a1f2, so this is declined. The archive producer quest settled (2026-10-19) that a covering route is capability, not inventory: a broadcast served under one on request, without its own announcement, is not recorded. --broadcast is a prefix now, and requesting it under a covering route would also fail the export whenever it names a namespace rather than a broadcast.

Preserve valid duplicate datagrams
When a publisher sends multiple datagrams with the same sequence, which track::Producer::insert_datagram explicitly permits and subscribers deliver individually, the first advances self.next and every subsequent one fails this condition and is silently discarded; a group and datagram sharing a sequence are similarly collapsed. The resulting archive therefore does not preserve the source track's datagram stream, so the layout or buffering must represent multiple entries at one sequence rather than treating the sequence as unique.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Declining. A sequence names one group, and the moq-lite draft has a subscriber deduplicate by group sequence (Datagrams section). A second datagram at the same sequence is a redundant copy or a publisher bug, not new content. insert_datagram skips the duplicate check as best effort; that does not make two datagrams at one sequence distinct content an archive must keep.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
A group whose head is held elsewhere starts past frame 0. The producer read it from frame 0, lagged, and stored nothing; now it starts at the group's first frame and opens its own object, since only an object's first entry carries a frame start. `export archive` now requests the selected path when a route covers it without announcing what is beneath. Establish sequence order before accepting the first arrival
When recording a fresh track, self.next is None, so the first pending arrival bypasses the gap wait and immediately becomes the starting sequence. Subscriber::poll_recv_group is arrival-ordered and can return a lower group later even with Order::Ascending transmission, such as during same-epoch route failover; if group 5 arrives before group 3, group 5 sets next, then group 3 is silently removed by the sequence < next.group branch. Seed the expected start before advancing or consume groups through the ordered cursor so valid earlier groups are not omitted.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 5212f06. With nothing stored, the first arrival now waits max_delay for a lower sequence (unless it is 0). The wait runs from the first arrival, so a run of ever lower sequences cannot extend it. The subscriber exposes no oldest-group start to seed from (floor() is None for Range::oldest), so the one gap rule covers this too. Regression test: a_fresh_track_waits_for_a_group_below_its_first_arrival.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Follow-up in b2d5a0d0e8: the ordering now lives in one consumer, producer::Ordered. It hands out each group or datagram as soon as every lower sequence was handed out or given up, and waits at most max_delay for a missing older one. A fresh track's first arrival waits too, unless it is sequence 0 or the subscription names a floor. I checked for an existing consumer to reuse. moq_net::track::Ordered seeks past a missing group at once and orders groups alone. moq-mux's container consumer decodes media and also takes its start from the first arrivals. Neither fits. Regression tests: only_a_missing_sequence_waits_the_max_delay and a_fresh_track_waits_for_a_group_below_its_first_arrival.

Make recording keys prefix-free
Concatenating variable-length broadcast path segments directly with the epoch allows one valid recording root to nest inside another: for broadcast live/a with epoch E, a broadcast named live/a/E with epoch F is stored below the first recording as live/a/E/F. If the first recording is incomplete and resumes, resume::load treats F as one of its track directories and fails fetching the nonexistent F/.info, so a peer controlling valid paths and epochs can prevent that archive from resuming. Encode the broadcast identity behind an unambiguous segment or delimiter rather than using raw path concatenation.

Fixed in 5d4f7c4c84, using the maintainer's layout: each instance records under <path>/@<epoch>. A path segment that starts with @ is percent-encoded to %40, and % is always encoded to %25, so no path segment's key starts with @ and the encoding stays one-to-one. So live/a/@E records under live/a/%40E/@F, beside live/a/@E, not inside it. I chose encoding over refusing such paths because refusing would let a publisher end the whole export, since any recording error ends it. Regression test: keys_are_prefix_free.

Arrival is not sequence order, so the first group to arrive on a track with nothing stored set where the track starts, and a lower one arriving just after it was dropped. The first arrival now waits the max delay for a lower sequence, unless it is 0. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

When an untrusted publisher keeps an untimed group open and continues sending frames, this branch retains every payload in Building.object; flush() only rewrites the same object and leaves the vector resident, while the duration cut happens only at the next group boundary. A long-lived archive can therefore grow memory without limit and repeatedly upload an ever-larger object. Add a byte or frame bound with explicit refusal, or use a layout that can safely split untimed groups.

Fixed in b2d5a0d0e8 by the layout change the maintainer chose. Untimed objects are keyed <group>-<frame> and split between frames like timed ones, at the flush or once the group's run lasts the duration. An open group therefore holds at most a flush of frames in memory, and every object is written once. The rewrite-in-place and read-back resume paths are deleted. Regression tests: an_open_untimed_group_is_cut_at_each_flush and an_untimed_group_splits_by_wall_clock.

Keep export running when one recording fails.
record returns errors from both request_broadcast and Producer::run. result? exits export on either error. Dropping the JoinSet aborts the other recording tasks, so they can stop without writing their completion markers. Log per-recording errors and continue. Keep join errors fatal so panics still propagate.

…free A publisher could announce a path that spells out another recording's key prefix and land its own recording inside it, breaking that one's resume. The epoch segment now starts with @, and a path segment's leading @ is percent-encoded (as % already is), so no key prefix lies inside another. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Preserve legacy epoch metadata while decoding
Recordings produced by the previous Writer include an epoch member in each source track's .info; removing that field while retaining #[serde(deny_unknown_fields)] makes Info::decode reject those objects. Since Reader intentionally remains the only reader for the old timeline layout, moq import archive can open the timeline metadata but fails when a consumer requests any epoch-bearing media or catalog track. Accept and ignore the legacy member during decoding while keeping it out of newly encoded metadata.

Keep a fixed deadline for the current missing sequence
When next is known and a higher sequence is pending, this derives the gap deadline from the lowest pending item's own arrival. An out-of-order publisher can therefore send successively lower, but still greater-than-next, sequences just before each deadline; every insertion changes first_entry() and resets the wait for another max_delay. The recorder can be stalled indefinitely while pending retains all higher group consumers, so start one deadline when the current missing sequence is first observed and do not extend it for later arrivals.

Release recorders when tracks are removed
When a long-lived publisher repeatedly adds and removes distinct track names, this arm discards every removal while queues and recorders retain one entry and parked task per name until the entire broadcast listing ends. A remote peer can therefore grow archive process state without bound even when it has no active tracks; retire the recorder on removal and recreate or resume it if the name is later added again.

Declining. The per-name state is what the archive owes each name it has seen. Its end marker is written once the listing ends, since a removed name can come back and resume. Under DVR, the parked recorder also keeps pruning that track's superseded objects. Retiring it on removal would still leave one entry per name and would drop that pruning. The cost is O(1) per track directory, and a publisher can only create one by making the store hold that track's .info and objects. So memory grows with what the publisher already makes the store hold, not with anything it can do for free.

Validate the instance returned by subscribe
When the listed track is removed and re-added while properties() is awaiting its store write, the subsequent late-bound broadcast.track() lookup can subscribe to the newer instance, but its frames are recorded using the older queued Info. A changed priority is silently archived incorrectly, and a changed timescale can poison the prefix before the later queued update finally reports the mismatch. Subscribe first and validate/store subscriber.info() so a stale TRACKS event cannot describe another instance.

Fixed in 79b2e5a74c. Each run now checks and stores the subscribed instance's info() rather than the listing's, and takes max_delay from it. Remove delivered entries from the arrival deque
On a normal gap-free track, every accepted group or datagram appends here, but stale entries are removed only inside the if gap branch. Consecutive sequences therefore leave one tuple per delivered item in arrivals for the lifetime of the recording, causing ordinary long-running archives to consume memory without bound. Remove the corresponding arrival when handing out an item, or prune stale arrivals before testing for a gap.

Fixed in dc0e354a66. Every hand-out now trims arrivals up to the oldest one still pending, so the front is always pending and a gap-free track holds none. Anything behind a pending front is gone within a max delay. Regression test: handed_out_arrivals_are_dropped.

Preserve a Start that follows an epochless End
When an epochless route emits End and then Start while its previous recorder is still draining, such as during a slow object-store write, restart is false and this condition discards the new Start. That start represents a new publisher instance, and after the old task decrements running no later event retriggers recording, so the replacement broadcast is omitted entirely. Queue or launch the new recording instead of suppressing this event.

Fixed in dc0e354a66. An epochless route is a new instance each time it is announced, so every Start or Restart of one records under a fresh key, even while the last recording drains. If an epoch-pinned instance is announced again while it records, it records again once that recording ends: it resumes, or does nothing if .end is stored. Regression test: a_re_announced_instance_is_recorded.

Derive the wire budget from the subscribed instance
When a track is replaced between its Added event and this late-bound lookup, and the old listing's max_age is shorter than the new instance's, the subscription still requests the old, smaller delay. Subscription::max_delay controls which backlog the source sends, so groups skipped by that request cannot be recovered by recalculating the local Ordered delay from subscriber.info() later. The remaining use of info here is fresh evidence after the earlier property fix; construct the request with a budget independent of the stale listing information.

Fixed in dc0e354a66. The SUBSCRIBE now asks for the configured cap, which does not depend on the listing. The wait for a gap still takes min(subscribed max age, cap) from the instance actually subscribed. A larger wire budget costs nothing the publisher does not already hold. No regression test: replacing a track between its listing and the late-bound lookup, with a backlog the smaller budget skips, is not easy to stage.

Coalesce the per-track re-add backlog
While a recorder is blocked on an object-store operation, the top-level producer continues consuming TRACKS events, so a publisher can repeatedly remove and re-add the same name and push every Added into this unbounded queue. The recorder eventually discards all but the newest entry in idle, meaning the accumulated intermediate values are unnecessary yet can grow memory without limit; use a bounded replacement slot that retains only the latest info.

Fixed in dc0e354a66. The listing replaces any info still queued for a track before pushing the new one, so a blocked recorder holds at most one however often its track is re-added. idle no longer needs to drain to the newest. No regression test: the queue is internal to run, and the invariant is the replacement itself.

…d instances - Ordered drops each arrival it hands out, so a gap-free track holds none; before, every arrival stayed for the recording's life. - The listing keeps at most the newest info queued per track, however often a blocked recorder's track is re-added. - A run requests the configured cap, since the listing's max age may describe an older instance and a skipped backlog is not resent; the gap wait still takes the subscribed instance's max age. - export archive records an epochless route announced again while its last recording drains, and records an epoch-pinned one again once its recording ends, instead of dropping the announcement. Resolve epochless instances before polling another restart
When a no-epoch route has queued Start/Restart events, spawning here does not synchronously poll record, so this loop can consume the later restart before the earlier task reaches request_broadcast(path, None). Both tasks can then resolve the newest publisher: the earlier instance is omitted and the newest is duplicated under two freshly minted keys. The new spawn is fresh evidence beyond the prior drain-overlap fix; resolve or otherwise capture each epochless broadcast before advancing the announcement cursor.

Fixed in 15ae0bcac0. The loop requests each announcement's broadcast as it reads it, so a request binds to whichever instance serves at that moment. Every recording also claims the broadcast it resolves, and skips the recording if another one already holds that broadcast. A burst read after one instance took over now records that instance once. An instance that was already gone when its announcement was read cannot be recorded anyway. Regression test: a_resolved_broadcast_is_recorded_once.

Bound concurrent recordings created by announcements
When an authorized but hostile publisher announces many distinct paths, or repeatedly restarts no-epoch routes whose broadcasts remain open, every event spawns another long-lived recording with no concurrency or count limit. JoinSet and Running only track these tasks; they do not cap them, so one peer can grow tasks, subscriptions, and object-store state until the exporter exhausts resources. Add a configured bound and refuse excess instances rather than spawning indefinitely.

Declining. Each recording follows a broadcast the peer announced and still holds, so the exporter's cost tracks what the peer publishes, the same as any subscriber's. Duplicate announcements of one broadcast now share a single recording. A count cap would be an arbitrary limit whose only job is to refuse. The bound belongs to the publish scope the peer's token grants.

Keep session-loss termination resumable.
When the origin front ends after an upstream session loss, Action::End calls broadcast.close(). Existing TRACKS readers then receive Ok(None), while handed-out tracks retain the session error. track::record converts that error to End::Error, and Producer::run writes .end because it checks only whether each end exists.
A later same-epoch announcement reuses the same prefix. resume::load sees .end and returns None, so the deferred recording exits without recording the reconnect.
Propagate the front termination error through the TRACKS listing so Producer does not write the broadcast marker for a session loss. Preserve the existing clean-close behavior for an explicitly aborted track, covered by markers_wait_for_the_listing_to_end.

Resolve against the archive Producer rewrite (#6160): Info stores the signed priority at version 3 and still reads version 2, and a Producer refuses to resume a version 2 recording. The draft's Recording section is gone, so only the archive catalog version moves to 3. Main's new PUBLISH_OK and SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS defaults use the IETF absent byte. The quest audit's receive-rank and poll-ordering notes move to the m2 broadcast fairness quest. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Cargo rejects the whole rust-extra invocation while it names `writer`, which #6160 renamed to `producer`. The coverage test now fails on any named target that no selected package declares. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

just checkon 15ae0bc: the Rust tests, lints, andjust drafts checkpass. Two failures come from main, not this PR:quest checkflags main's links to the deleted resume-outage quest. moq-dev/moq#6205 fixes them, and with that diff applied locally, quest checkpasses.nix flake checkcan't build main's runner VM image in a sandbox without user namespaces (unshareis refused). Settled by the maintainer (2026-10-21): every recommendation below is accepted.
Each has a recommendation:
export archivemints a key epoch for each instance whose route carries none. An exporter restart therefore never resumes that recording, and two instances are never stitched. Recommend keeping this. The alternative is keying by path alone, which would stitch instances.import archive: it stays on the oldReaderuntil the consumer quest lands, so for now it cannot replay whatexport archivewrites. Recommend accepting this. The consumer quest adds the round-trip test.max_delay) also delays storing datagrams that arrive behind a missing sequence. Recommend keeping one ordering rule for both forms.duration2s,flush4s,max_delay10s. Recommend these.Settled by the maintainer (2026-10-21), from Codex review findings:
<path>/@<epoch>✅, the maintainer's choice. A path segment's leading@is percent-encoded, as%always is, so the layout is prefix-free by construction. Encoding was chosen over refusing such paths, since a refusal would let a publisher end the whole export (decision 2).<group>-<frame>✅. This replaces the quest's "untimed groups never split" and deletes the rewrite-in-place and read-back resume paths, so memory and uploads stay bounded.max_delay✅. It hands out each sequence as soon as it can, but waits up tomax_delayfor an older one. Neithermoq_net::track::Ordered(it seeks past a missing group at once and orders groups alone) nor moq-mux's container consumer (it decodes media and takes its start from the first arrivals) fits, so it isproducer::Orderedin moq-archive.Coordination
