feat(ietf): answer SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS through the TRACKS hook - #6167
Conversation
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A moq-transport SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS (draft-18 on) now lists every track under its prefix instead of being refused. FORWARD=0 gets a paused PUBLISH per track, resumed and paused with REQUEST_UPDATE and served from the cache like a SUBSCRIBE, ending with PUBLISH_DONE once the track is unlisted. Past the subscription cap, and for every track of a FORWARD=1 listing from draft-19, a track gets PUBLISH_SKIPPED; draft-18 refuses FORWARD=1. Overlapping prefixes get PREFIX_OVERLAP, and on draft-18 a SUBSCRIBE to a PUBLISHed track gets DUPLICATE_SUBSCRIPTION. The outbound half and the js/net mirror are split into their own quests. Admit update IDs before refusing the update
When a peer sends a REQUEST_UPDATE on a SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS stream, this branch decodes and answers it without passing update.request_id to Control::accept. Consequently, an update ID with the wrong parity, beyond the GOAWAY cutoff, or reused from an earlier request receives an ordinary per-request refusal instead of triggering the required session error, and the ID is never recorded as spent. Validate/admit the ID before constructing the refusal, as the other modern request-update handlers do.

Fixed in d2ee89f: the update's Request ID is admitted through Control::accept first, and a bad one closes the session with "invalid request ID" (GOING_AWAY still gets the per-request refusal). Covered by a_listing_update_admits_its_request_id.

Apply NEW_GROUP_REQUEST to paused PUBLISH subscriptions
For a dynamic track, update.new_group passes this validation but is never acted on before REQUEST_OK is sent. For example, resuming a paused PUBLISH with a fixed location filter and NEW_GROUP_REQUEST does not count as a normal live join, and because the value is dropped here rather than invoking track.join() or equivalent, the publisher may never produce the requested fresh group despite the successful response. Either honor this parameter or refuse it rather than acknowledging and ignoring it.

Fixed in d2ee89f: NEW_GROUP_REQUEST on the resuming update goes to TrackServe::request_new_group, judged as a join under the refresh ratio as on a SUBSCRIBE. One sent while staying paused is refused (the subscription opens no groups), like FILL_PARAMETERS without resuming. Covered by a_resume_asks_for_a_new_group.

Re-list tracks after an authorization grant expands
If a track's namespace is denied when its initial TracksEvent::Added arrives, this arm discards the event permanently. The listing never polls the authorization permit for changes or replays the broadcast's existing tracks, so adding or renewing an in-band session grant while SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS remains open does not expose tracks that have become authorized; the same omission occurs after a grant shrinks, ends a PUBLISH, and later expands again. Existing tracks need to be reconsidered whenever the publish permit changes.

Fixed in d2ee89f: each listed broadcast now follows the publish permit (auth.poll_permit). While the permit does not cover its namespace it holds no listing; once it does, the listing is opened from scratch, replaying every current track; when it stops, the listing is dropped, its PUBLISHes are unlisted (and end on their own gates too), and its unsent skips are cancelled. Covered by a_listing_follows_the_publish_grant.

…the grant A REQUEST_UPDATE on a SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS stream now admits its Request ID, so a bad one closes the session like on any other request. A paused PUBLISH resumed with NEW_GROUP_REQUEST counts it as a join, and one sent without resuming is refused instead of acknowledged and dropped. Each listed broadcast follows the publish permit: denied, its listing and PUBLISHes end; covered again, its tracks are listed from scratch. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Verify authorization tokens before accepting listings
When request-token authorization is configured, a SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS carrying AUTHORIZATION_TOKEN reaches this unconditional success response without passing msg.authorization_token to Gate::verify or creating a RequestGrant; the broadcast tasks subsequently use only the session permit. Consequently, an invalid token can be accepted when the session scope covers the prefix, while a valid token cannot authorize a prefix outside that scope, even though draft-19 §10.2.2 defines the token as authorizing the operation carrying it. Verify or refuse the token before sending REQUEST_OK, and retain its grant for the listing lifetime.

Declining for this PR. This is the documented policy for every request except SUBSCRIBE and PUBLISH_NAMESPACE (doc/concept/standard.md: "A token on any other request is decoded and grants nothing"). SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE already handles its token this way. Ignoring the token never widens anything: every listed broadcast is still gated by the session's publish permit, and each PUBLISH by its own gate. So an invalid token on a request the session already allows just has no effect.
Letting a request token authorize a listing beyond the session scope is new behavior, and SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE would want it too. It also needs a verdict held for the listing's lifetime and renewed on REQUEST_UPDATE, which SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS refuses here. I'd scope it as a follow-up covering both namespace-style requests, not add it to this one alone.

Preserve NEW_GROUP_REQUEST from PUBLISH_OK
On drafts 18 and 19, a subscriber accepting a dynamic track can legally include NEW_GROUP_REQUEST in PUBLISH_OK, but PublishOk::decode_msg discards that parameter and this resume state hardcodes it to None. The PUBLISH therefore begins forwarding successfully without requesting the fresh group required by draft-19 §10.2.18. Preserve the decoded value and pass it through to request_new_group, as the REQUEST_UPDATE resume path now does.

Fixed in 52a080e: PublishOk now keeps NEW_GROUP_REQUEST (drafts 16 to 19), and it goes to request_new_group when the PUBLISH forwards, at once on a forwarding PUBLISH_OK or on the later resume when the PUBLISH_OK left it paused. Covered by test_publish_ok_carries_new_group_request.

Keep draft-19 GROUP_ORDER from SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS
For draft 19, GROUP_ORDER moved from PUBLISH_OK to SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS, so params.order already contains the requested value and the response cannot replace it. However, PublishOk::decode_msg supplies Descending for its absent field and this assignment overwrites an Ascending listing preference, causing the resumed subscription to serve groups in the wrong order. Preserve the existing order on draft 19 and only apply the PUBLISH_OK field on drafts where that parameter is legal, as specified by draft-19 §10.2.8.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 52a080e, at the decoder: PublishOk's priority, group order, and filter are now Option, absent when the answer omits them, and an absent one keeps the value the SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS set. That covers draft-19's missing GROUP_ORDER and also an omitted priority or filter on drafts 18 and 19, which previously reset to 128 and Unfiltered. Covered by test_publish_ok_absent_parameters_stay_absent.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
PUBLISH_OK's priority, group order, and filter decode as absent rather than defaulted, so a PUBLISH a SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS made keeps the listing's values when the answer omits them; draft-19 has no GROUP_ORDER there at all. NEW_GROUP_REQUEST (drafts 16 to 19) is kept and judged as a join when the PUBLISH forwards, at once or on its resume. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

End forwarding PUBLISHes when their listing disappears
When a broadcast is unannounced or restarted while one of its listed PUBLISH subscriptions is actively forwarding, run_listed_broadcast drops the listed guard, but this call waits only on media, update, and authorization events and never observes that guard. Because a local track may keep producing after its route is withdrawn, the stale PUBLISH can continue indefinitely, a restart can create a second PUBLISH for the same track, and the peer never receives the promised PUBLISH_DONE. Race active serving against listed.poll_closed, close its group streams, and terminate the PUBLISH.

Fixed in 1b46e29: the resumed subscription now also ends when its track is unlisted (the broadcast's route withdrawn or our publish grant narrowed), answering PUBLISH_DONE without END_OF_TRACK since the track itself has not ended. Cancelling the SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS still keeps the PUBLISHes already sent. Regression test an_unlisted_forwarding_publish_ends covers d18 and d22 and fails without the fix.

Preserve NEW_GROUP_REQUEST from SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS
For a paused listing whose SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS carries NEW_GROUP_REQUEST, this decoder binds the value to _new_group and discards it. Draft-19 §10.19.1 says subscription parameters become defaults for each resulting PUBLISH, so if a dynamic track is later resumed with only FORWARD=1, the accepted subscription forwards without ever calling request_new_group. Retain the value through Request/Listed and apply it on the first resume, as is already done for a queued value from PUBLISH_OK.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Fixed in 1b46e29: SubscribeTracks now decodes NEW_GROUP_REQUEST (0x32) and each PUBLISH applies it on its first resume, unless PUBLISH_OK or the resuming REQUEST_UPDATE carries its own. a_resume_asks_for_a_new_group now covers both the listing's and the update's.

| - **`SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS` lists, it never pushes.** In Rust, on draft 18 and later, it lists every track of every broadcast under its prefix, later ones included. With `FORWARD=0`, each track gets a paused `PUBLISH` carrying its Track Properties, and `PUBLISH_DONE` once the track is no longer listed. A `REQUEST_UPDATE` with `FORWARD=1` resumes one, served from the cache like a `SUBSCRIBE` with the update's filter and answered with `LARGEST_OBJECT`; `FORWARD=0` pauses it again. Each paused `PUBLISH` holds a subscription slot, and past the cap a track gets `PUBLISH_SKIPPED` (`PUBLISH_BLOCKED` on draft 18) instead. A listing that omits `FORWARD` or sets it to 1 asks for every track's objects: from draft 19 each track gets `PUBLISH_SKIPPED`, and the subscriber `SUBSCRIBE`s to what it wants; draft 18 has no such skip, so the request is refused with `NOT_SUPPORTED`. A prefix overlapping another listing gets `PREFIX_OVERLAP`, a `TRACK_PROPERTY_FILTER` gets `NOT_SUPPORTED`, and a `REQUEST_UPDATE` on the listing itself ends it. On draft 18, a `SUBSCRIBE` to a track we `PUBLISH`ed gets `DUPLICATE_SUBSCRIPTION`. Cancelling the listing stops new `PUBLISH`es, while those sent live on. A broadcast is listed only while our publish grant covers it, from scratch once it does. A Rust relay does not yet send `SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS` upstream, and JavaScript refuses it with `NOT_SUPPORTED`. |

SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS creates paused PUBLISH streams, and REQUEST_UPDATE with FORWARD=1 resumes object delivery. The current wording can imply that the request never delivers objects. State that the initial listing does not push objects.

Keep parameters from forwarding-time updates when a paused PUBLISH resumes.
resume_publish receives params by value because Params is Copy. While the subscription forwards, run_subscription routes every REQUEST_UPDATE through apply_subscription_update. That function applies SUBSCRIBER_PRIORITY and MAX_AGE only to the temporary TrackServe and its track::Subscriber. The pausing update (FORWARD=0) can carry these parameters too, and they are also applied only there.
On Served::Paused, run_publish keeps its own params value, which these updates never changed. The next resume calls serving_subscription(params.priority) and applies the old max_age.
Trigger: the subscriber resumes, sends a priority update, pauses, and resumes again. Consequence: the subscription goes back to its old priority and max age. The subscriber is not told about this. REQUEST_UPDATE parameters are supposed to persist for the life of the subscription.
Fix: pass params as &mut Params. Before resume_publish returns, copy the values the update applied back into it. Another option is to return the updated Params together with Served::Paused.

Report route withdrawal as an error
When a broadcast route is withdrawn or restarted while its track remains alive, this arm converts the cancellation into Served::Track(Ok(())), so write_publish_done emits TRACK_ENDED, which the receiver interprets as a clean end. The subscriber consequently treats a transient route loss as a deliberate publisher finish instead of requesting the path again when routing recovers; preserve an error result for unlisting while still suppressing END_OF_TRACK.

Fixed in b3840d4: an unlisted PUBLISH, forwarding or paused, now ends with an error status instead of TRACK_ENDED, since the track may go on elsewhere. A revoked grant still reports UNAUTHORIZED, because the gate is checked first. Once unlisted, a track that finished cannot be told apart from one whose route went (the listing no longer resolves the name), so a paused PUBLISH of a finished track also ends in error. That follows the rule that a dying route ends requests with an error, never a clean end. Tests an_unlisted_forwarding_publish_ends and an_unlisted_paused_publish_ends_in_error check the status and fail without the fix.

Cancel PUBLISH while waiting for stream credit
When the peer's bidirectional stream credit is exhausted, this await is no longer raced against listed or live. If the listing is cancelled or the track is removed after its Request ID was allocated, the task remains parked while holding its subscription slot, and once credit returns it emits a new PUBLISH for the cancelled or unlisted track. Keep stream acquisition cancellable, for example by opening before consuming an ID and polling it alongside both guards, so a peer cannot strand these slots or receive offers after cancellation.

Preserve clean completion when a listed track finishes
When the local publisher deliberately finishes or removes a track, TracksEvent::Removed closes the same listed guard used for route withdrawal, so a paused PUBLISH reaches this branch and reports NotFound/INTERNAL_ERROR rather than TRACK_ENDED; forwarding PUBLISHes can report either result depending on whether removal or track completion is observed first. Distinguish a deliberate track finish from loss of the broadcast route so subscribers do not retry content that ended normally.

This reverses the previous round's finding, and it needs a decision, so it is escalated to the maintainer rather than fixed here.
Once a track leaves its broadcast's listing, a paused PUBLISH cannot tell a finish from an abort or from a lost route. The paused task holds no subscription, and its handle resolves through the broadcast, which no longer lists the name. The options:
- Hold the track's own state from listing time through a crate-private model accessor, so a finished track ends TRACK_ENDED, an aborted one with its error, and a lost route or grant with an error. This touches
model/track.rs. - Split by cause with no model change.
TracksEvent::Removedlets a forwarding PUBLISH run to its track's own end, and ends a paused one TRACK_ENDED. A lost route or grant ends with an error. An aborted paused track would read as clean. - Keep the current behavior: every unlisting ends in error, following the rule that a dying route never ends cleanly.

Settled by the maintainer: keep the current behavior. Every unlisting ends the PUBLISH with an error PUBLISH_DONE, never TRACK_ENDED, since a track that leaves the listing may go on elsewhere; a finished track reads as an error. No model change. The unlisted() comment, the module docs, and doc/concept/standard.md now state this deliberately (9d15474).

Make the initial PUBLISH write cancellable
If the peer permits opening a bidirectional stream but withholds that stream's send flow-control credit, this encode().await can remain pending after the listing is canceled. Although stream opening and Request ID allocation are now raced against the guards, this newly visible unconditional flush still retains the subscription slot and spent ID, then sends the stale PUBLISH if credit later arrives; race this flush against live and listed as well.

Fixed in 12cd008: the PUBLISH header write now races the listing and the request, like the stream open and the ID wait. An abandoned ID leaves a gap, which every draft with SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS allows (none has MAX_REQUEST_ID), and a stream reset before its header is whole is ignored by the peer.

Encode copied parameters in draft-20+ PUBLISH
When a draft-20+ paused listing supplies a nondefault priority, group order, or Location Filter, this Publish carries only LARGEST_OBJECT, FORWARD, and Track Properties because the Publish type has no fields for the listing's Params. These drafts require the SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS subscription parameters to be explicitly copied into every resulting PUBLISH (draft-20 §10.20.1), so the peer records defaults while resume_publish silently applies different values. For example, a later FORWARD=1 update that omits the filter makes the sender use the listing's absolute filter while the receiver believes the subscription is unfiltered; encode these parameters in PUBLISH for drafts 20 and later. Mirror SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS support in js/net
I checked js/net/src/ietf/publisher.ts, where runSubscribeTracks still unconditionally returns NOT_SUPPORTED, while this dispatch now serves the same request in Rust. Gate NEW_GROUP_REQUEST on the advertised property
When a draft-20+ listing sets INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0 for a dynamic track, the PUBLISH correctly carries no DYNAMIC_GROUPS property, but this field remains true from the private track metadata. A peer can therefore send NEW_GROUP_REQUEST while resuming and pass the later !dynamic check, causing track.join() even though the protocol forbids the request when the Track did not include DYNAMIC_GROUPS=1 (draft-19 §10.2.18); derive this permission from the properties actually sent rather than info.refresh. Report the source largest object in PUBLISH
When a listed track is routed and its local cache is cold, live_edge(&track) can return largest: None even though the model retains the upstream publisher's reported largest location via peek_largest. The resulting PUBLISH falsely describes the track as empty, so draft-18/19 subscribers can choose their PUBLISH_OK filter or NEW_GROUP_REQUEST from the wrong edge, while newer drafts miss the required LARGEST_OBJECT. Use the source-reported largest rather than cache contents, as required by draft-22 §9.20.17.

Declined. peek_largest is on track::Subscriber, and a paused PUBLISH deliberately holds no subscription: subscribing upstream for every listed track to learn its edge would turn one listing into a subscription per track, and a relay reports its current state rather than waiting on a peer. The edge is decided where it matters: the resume subscribes, waits poll_live, and answers REQUEST_OK with LARGEST_OBJECT from the live route, exactly as SUBSCRIBE_OK does, and the filter resolves against that edge then. A paused PUBLISH's LARGEST_OBJECT is the cached one, absent when nothing is cached.

Enforce the draft-22 SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS parameter set
With Version::Draft22, setting subscriber_priority, filter, or new_group makes this public encoder emit parameters 0x20, 0x21, or 0x32, although draft 22 removed them from SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS; a compliant receiver must close the session when a parameter appears on the wrong message. The decoder likewise accepts these invalid inputs. Gate these parameters to the older drafts and reject them on draft 22, whose allowed list is defined in §9.18.

Declined for this PR. Draft-22 contradicts itself: section 9.18 lists only AUTHORIZATION_TOKEN, FORWARD, GROUP_ORDER, the range filters, TRACK_PROPERTY_FILTER and INCLUDE_PROPERTIES, while section 3.6.2 still says any subscription parameter is valid on SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS, naming the Location Filter as the join. Closing the session over a parameter one section allows would break peers following the other, so the decoder accepts both. Nothing sends SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS yet (the encoder is test-only until the outbound quest), so the outbound quest now records sending only the section 9.18 set on draft-22.

Apply legal SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS updates
Every successfully decoded update is refused here, including TRACK_NAMESPACE_PREFIX, which drafts 18 and later define for changing the listing prefix; draft 22 also permits FORWARD to control only future matching subscriptions. In particular, changing the prefix does not re-scope existing PUBLISH subscriptions, contrary to the comment, so a non-overlapping update should be acknowledged and the listing cursor restarted while existing PUBLISHes remain intact. Draft-22 FORWARD also needs to be decoded instead of becoming a protocol violation. See draft-22 §§9.5.2 and 9.20.18.

Partly fixed in b2a93d4. From draft-20 a listing's REQUEST_UPDATE may carry FORWARD; it is now decoded and refused like any listing update instead of closing the session. Testing it showed the refusal never reached the peer: its REQUEST_ERROR was buffered but the listing only waited for the stream to close, so it now flushes and FINs first. Test: a_listing_update_is_refused (drafts 18 to 22), which fails without either fix.

Decode track filters on listing updates
When a draft-19+ peer sends a legal TRACK_PROPERTY_FILTER (0x29) in a REQUEST_UPDATE for SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS, this parameter list does not recognize it, so decoding reports a protocol violation and closes the entire session. Draft 22 explicitly permits this parameter on listing updates; since filtering is not implemented, decode it and return the per-request REQUEST_ERROR used for the initial listing rather than treating the peer as malformed. Wait for setup authorization before listing tracks
When AUTH is negotiated and the setup credential is still awaiting its first answer, this path starts consuming announcements immediately. Each broadcast task then calls permit_now(None), whose unanswered grant is represented as unrestricted, so a peer can receive PUBLISH names and properties before its eventual grant narrows or refuses the publish scope. The existing namespace advertisement path waits on auth.poll_setup_answered for this reason; do the same before acknowledging or driving the initial track listing.

Reject new-group requests when the same update pauses
When a listed PUBLISH is currently forwarding, an update containing both NEW_GROUP_REQUEST and FORWARD=0 reaches this sequence: request_new_group calls track.join(), then the update pauses the subscription. The paused-state path explicitly rejects NEW_GROUP_REQUEST unless the update resumes with FORWARD=1, but this forwarding path accepts the same unsupported combination and can make the publisher create a fresh group that the now-paused subscription will not consume. Answer failed resume updates before ending the PUBLISH
When a paused PUBLISH receives FORWARD=1 and the track aborts while track.subscribe() is resolving, this return bypasses the only how.answer handling below, so the accepted REQUEST_UPDATE receives neither REQUEST_OK nor REQUEST_ERROR; the subsequent PUBLISH_DONE also uses INTERNAL_ERROR rather than UPDATE_FAILED. Draft 22 requires exactly one response to every update and says an unsuccessful subscription update must then terminate with UPDATE_FAILED, while the missing response permanently consumes one MAX_REQUEST_UPDATES credit. Send REQUEST_ERROR before returning the failed resume result and classify the termination as an update failure. Draft 22 §9.5

Continue observing route withdrawals while flushing the listing
When a listing ends through a refused update after its response stream has exhausted send credit, this ready!(poll_flush) can remain pending while the closure drives only the PUBLISH tasks. The announcement cursor is not polled until after the flush, so an End or Restart cannot remove the corresponding entry from routes; already-sent PUBLISHes therefore remain listed and can keep forwarding from a route that no longer exists for as long as the peer withholds credit. Poll announcements and release route guards during this graceful-close phase as well.

Use the upstream edge when resuming a listed track
When a routed track has a cold cache but its upstream publisher reported a Largest Object, subscriber.poll_live() can complete while live_edge(track) still returns largest: None; the resulting REQUEST_OK omits LARGEST_OBJECT and relative or Next Object filters are resolved against the wrong edge. Unlike the earlier pre-PUBLISH case, this path has already created subscriber, so the source-reported edge is available from that subscription and should drive the range and response.

Declining here: resuming takes the same steps as a SUBSCRIBE on main (serve_subscribe_stream): subscribe(), then poll_live(), then live_edge(&cache), with poll_live waiting until a routed copy's route answers. Changing where that edge comes from would change SUBSCRIBE too, so it belongs in a separate change to the shared live-edge logic, not in this PR. Noted for the maintainer as a follow-up.

Make the setup-authorization wait cancellable
When MoQ Auth is negotiated and the setup credential remains unanswered, a peer that cancels this SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS cannot release it because this await never polls the request stream. The task therefore retains self and the Established guard indefinitely, so later requests for the same prefix receive PREFIX_OVERLAP and dropping the application’s session handle may not tear the parked task down. Race this wait against request withdrawal and session closure, as the later listing loop does.

Fixed in 578da99: the setup-answer wait now gates announcements inside the listing loop, which already handles a cancel, a refused update, and session close, so the request ends and frees its prefix while the answer is still pending. A side effect: REQUEST_OK now goes out before the answer, but no track is listed until it arrives. Test: a_listing_waits_for_the_setup_answer now cancels the waiting listing and expects a second one for the same prefix to get REQUEST_OK; without the fix it gets PREFIX_OVERLAP.

…setup answer The MoQ Auth setup-answer wait now gates announcements inside the listing loop, so a cancel, a refused update, or a closed session still ends the request and releases its prefix while the peer withholds the answer. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Preserve delivery timeouts in listed PUBLISHes
When a draft-20/21 SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS with FORWARD=0 supplies a nonzero OBJECT_DELIVERY_TIMEOUT, this decoder accepts and discards it; the same happens to SUBGROUP_DELIVERY_TIMEOUT below. Consequently, each resulting PUBLISH advertises the default of no timeout and the resumed subscription does not enforce the requested expiry, potentially delivering stale objects. Draft-20 §10.20.1 requires these subscription parameters to become the initial parameters explicitly communicated in each resulting PUBLISH; preserve and apply both timeouts, or refuse the listing rather than acknowledging them. Declining here: this matches how a SUBSCRIBE already treats these parameters. Subscribe reads and drops OBJECT_DELIVERY_TIMEOUT and SUBGROUP_DELIVERY_TIMEOUT too (rs/moq-net/src/ietf/subscribe.rs), and moq-net has no per-subscription delivery timeout to apply them to. A listed track resumes the same way a SUBSCRIBE does. Supporting delivery timeouts, or refusing them on both requests, would change SUBSCRIBE as well, so it belongs in its own change. Noted for the maintainer as a follow-up.

Re-queued after the merge queue's rustfmt failure:
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5) |
Implements the inbound half of quest/m1/archive/subscribe-tracks.md: a moq-transport SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS (draft-18 on) is answered through the TRACKS hook (
broadcast::Consumer::tracks) instead of NOT_SUPPORTED. The outbound half and the js/net mirror are split into their own quests (see open decisions). What changed
New
rs/moq-net/src/ietf/publisher/tracks.rsserves a SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS stream:PUBLISHon its own stream, carrying its Track Properties andLARGEST_OBJECT. The subscriber resumes it withREQUEST_UPDATEFORWARD=1 (with an optional filter and, from draft-20,FILL_PARAMETERS), which is served from the cache exactly like aSUBSCRIBE(TrackServe, joins, fills) and answered withREQUEST_OKcarryingLARGEST_OBJECT. FORWARD=0 pauses it again. On drafts 18/19 aPUBLISH_OKwith FORWARD=1 resumes at once, and its absent parameters keep the listing's. ANEW_GROUP_REQUESTon the listing, thePUBLISH_OK, or the resuming update is a join under the track's refresh ratio, as on a SUBSCRIBE. A track no longer listed (its broadcast's route gone, the track removed, or our publish grant narrowed) ends the PUBLISH, forwarding or paused, with an errorPUBLISH_DONE, never TRACK_ENDED, since the track may go on elsewhere.PUBLISH_SKIPPEDand the subscriber SUBSCRIBEs what it wants; draft-18 has no such skip, so the request getsREQUEST_ERRORNOT_SUPPORTED.subscriptionsslot; past the cap the track is skipped (PUBLISH_SKIPPED, the same 0x0F wire as draft-18'sPUBLISH_BLOCKED). Pending skips are a per-requestLinkedHashMapkeyed by (suffix, name), written one at a time as the stream drains and cancelled by a removal, so a peer that stops reading holds at most one per listed track.PREFIX_OVERLAPrefuses a prefix overlapping an established listing, so each broadcast is listed at most once per session. A PUBLISH waits for the peer's stream credit, then its request-ID credit, only while its track is listed and the request stands; it opens its stream before taking an ID, so a cancelled wait spends none.FILL_PARAMETERSopens nothing, since each PUBLISH starts paused (draft-22 section 3.4.1). MAX_AGE is not a SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS parameter; an update sets it per PUBLISH.INVALID_FILTER,TRACK_PROPERTY_FILTERgets NOT_SUPPORTED (rather than listing tracks the subscriber excluded), and aREQUEST_UPDATEon the listing itself (a new prefix, or from draft-20 FORWARD) is refused withREQUEST_ERROR, ending it, once its Request ID is admitted (a bad one closes the session).SUBSCRIBEto a track we PUBLISHed on this session is refused, and a track the peer is already subscribed to (its SUBSCRIBE, or a PUBLISH outliving an earlier listing) is skipped rather than PUBLISHed, as section 5.1 requires. Later drafts dropped the rule and serve it.ietf::SubscribeTracksandietf::PublishSkippedmessages (newsubscribe_tracks.rs), replacing the bareSUBSCRIBE_TRACKS_IDand the unusedPublishBlocked.PublishOkkeeps absent parameters absent (Options) and carriesNEW_GROUP_REQUEST(draft-16 to 19);SubscribeTrackscarries it too.Publishcarries the subscription'sSUBSCRIBER_PRIORITY,GROUP_ORDER, and Location Filter from draft-20, where they moved onto PUBLISH, so each listed PUBLISH states the listing's values. An update'sNEW_GROUP_REQUESTneeds theDYNAMIC_GROUPSthe PUBLISH actually sent, whichINCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0leaves out.RequestOkcarrieslargest(LARGEST_OBJECT, 0x09).REQUEST_UPDATEdecode now keeps FORWARD, filter, and fill; aSUBSCRIBE's update still refuses them, now inapply_subscription_update.publisher.rsreused by the PUBLISH path:write_end_of_track,write_publish_done,poll_update,subscribe_range(filter, ..), andServed::Paused/TrackServe::pausable.doc/concept/standard.mddescribes the new behavior; JavaScript still refuses SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS.Public API and wire impact

On mock time, drafts 18 to 22, in
publisher/tracks.rs: a paused listing PUBLISHes every track including a later track and a later broadcast, and ends one with PUBLISH_DONE when unlisted; an update resumes (REQUEST_OK with LARGEST_OBJECT, new groups flow, the joined group is not resent) and pauses (no more groups, PUBLISH_DONE counts the streams); a forwarding listing skips every track (refused on draft-18); an overlapping prefix is refused and freed by the cancel; a draft-18 SUBSCRIBE to a PUBLISHed track is a duplicate; past the subscription cap a track is skipped; a cancelled listing keeps its PUBLISHes; a forwarding PUBLISH_OK resumes on drafts 18/19; a listing update's Request ID is admitted, and the update is refused with REQUEST_ERROR (FORWARD included from draft-20); a resume (or the listing) asks for a new group; a listing follows the publish grant; an unlisted forwarding or paused PUBLISH ends in error; from draft-20 a PUBLISH states the listing's parameters, andINCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0refuses an update's NEW_GROUP_REQUEST. The integration testtests/integration/subscribe_tracks.rsnow checks PUBLISH_SKIPPED end to end on drafts 19 to 22 and the draft-18 refusal, with the session's existing subscription still delivering.Checks (at 4fbf711, merged with main):

Codex findings across seventeen rounds were fixed, except decision 5 above (settled: keep) and one declined: verifying a SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS
AUTHORIZATION_TOKEN(thread). A token on a namespace-style request grants nothing by documented policy, the same as SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE, so changing that belongs to both together. A request to mirror this in js/net (thread) was declined per decision 2. Also declined: a paused PUBLISH's LARGEST_OBJECT from an upstream subscription (thread), since a paused PUBLISH holds none and the resume answers from the live route; draft-22's narrower SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS parameter set (thread), which its own section 3.6.2 contradicts, so the decoder accepts both and the outbound quest sends the narrow set; and applying listing updates (thread), refused by design. Round seventeen's two were declined too: aMIGRATE.mdentry for the changed message structs, which are crate-private sincemod ietfis not exported (thread), and taking a resume's edge from the upstream subscription rather than the cache (thread), which resuming shares with SUBSCRIBE on main, so it is a follow-up to the shared live-edge logic.Follow-ups
